Hey all!
I just wanted to let you guys know that the Public School has scheduled the
following events to be held in March:

*Thursday, March 20th at 7pm:* Radical fiction, mystery, and crime! With Ken
Wishnia, Norman Nawrocki, Sin Soracco, Nick Mamatas, Owen Hill, and Summer
Brenner.
*Saturday, March 22nd at 7pm:* Silvia Federici and and George Caffentzis on
Capital, Labor and Reproduction, George is author of In Letters of Blood

Manual<https://secure.pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=563>
*Sunday, March 23rd at 7pm:* John P. Clark on Anarchy, Geography,
Modernity: Selected Writings of Elisée
Reclus<https://secure.pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=565>
and
scott crow on Black Flags and Windmills: Hope, Anarchy, and the Common
Ground Collective<https://secure.pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=221>
*Monday, March 24th at 7pm:* Clifton Ross and Marcy Rein on Until the
Rulers Obey: Voices from Latin American Social
Movements<https://secure.pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=567>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I plan to check with George about possibly using the room downstairs for
our event on Thursday, March 20th to ensure that it will not interfere
w/Mesh and JavaScript meetups that evening.
The events scheduled for Saturday the 22nd, Sunday the 23rd and Monday the
24th will be held in the common space.
Please let me know if you foresee any conflicts - I didn't notice any on
the calendar aside from Thurs.
Love,
Niki

Subject: [sudo-discuss] someone hacking the SudoRoom Wiki
Date: Fri, Feb 7, 2014 15:58
Hey, I just fixed a hack on the SudoRoom main page.
Someone is hacking the SudoRoom Wiki - I don't know who, I know this probably happens often. Are there safety precautions?
https://sudoroom.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Sudoroom&action=history
I undid the "hardcore jerkey action" - and I saw that someone also undid this shortly before I went on the page.
Any idea wh'os doing this?

So cool and way better than a torturous tech talk
Complaining about the problem
http://www.businessinsider.com/growing-army-of-women-take-on-wikipedia-2014…
A Growing Army Of Women Are Taking On Wikipedia's Sexism Problem
Wikipedia/Gerald Shields
These people gathered for an Arts WikiMedia Edit-a-thon
With all the depressing stories about sexism in the tech industry, it's easy to overlook some really fantastic things helping to improve the situation.
For instance, there's a growing army of women who are trying to end Wikipedia's well-documented gender gap – fewer than 15% of Wikipedia editors around the world, it acknowledges – which has given the crowdsourced information site an arguably sexist bent.
Instead of complaining about it, various groups of women have begun organizing edit-a-thons, days set aside where people (women and men) gather, write and edit articles about women for Wikipedia. Writing an article isn't always enough. Regular Wikipedia editors, called administrators, can delete articles and changes. So, these groups first get trained on Wikipedia's rules to ensure their articles and edits stick.
One of the earliest women-in-tech edit-a-thons happened about two years ago, when the Wikimedia offices in San Francisco held a Women's History Month Edit-a-Thon. About 40 people showed up. They learned the rules of making changes that would stick and edited over 20 articles and created 11 new ones, according to the Wikipedia article on the event.
Flash forward to two weeks ago, when a New York group that calls itself Art+Feminism organized an edit-a-thon to focus on Wikipedia pages for female artists. It drew 600 participants, in 6 countries, at 61 locations,
and created 101 new articles and improved another 90. And that group has already got more edit-a-thons scheduled for later in February and in March.
The Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that supports Wikipedia, couldn't be happier. Wikimedia spokesperson Jay Walsh told Business Insider:
"This recent example of edit-a-thons aimed at bringing in more women has been really impressive - dozens of groups around the US and Canada (and I believe Europe and beyond) got involved and carried out these day-long sessions, which included both men and women. It's a really important way for people who have knowledge to share, but no experienced editing Wikipedia, to get comfortable with the process."

Hi all,
There's a proper flyer posted up now, and an fb event for the thing
happening on Saturday at the space. It should be pretty cool. Check it out:

BAPS event:
http://thepublicschool.org/node/36449
8PM SATURDAY!
Chile has a long history of working class struggle in shanty towns,
factories, mines, community organizations, and schools. In the 20 years
after the US supported coup which overthrew Salvador Allende's government,
much of the organizing was done underground. However after the fall of the
dictatorship in 1990, there was a new rise of mass popular organization in
the country. Anarchists have been a major force in the social movements,
strategically organizing to build power. This has manifested in solidarity
for the Mapuches, anarchists winning the student union elections at the
University of Chile, militant pro-abortion actions, and libertarian labor
organizations.
This national tour brings three individuals involved in these struggles to
talk about the lessons learned and to create solidarity across hemispheres.
>From January to the end of February, the speakers will be traveling
throughout the country and we hope that you can spread the word and hear
about the important work that is happening in Chile.
And on Saturday, February 22, they will at last be at the Bay Area Public
School and Sudo Room! Join us and AK Press in welcoming them at 2141
Broadway (enter on 22nd, elevate to 2nd floor) at 8pm sharp.
Space is handicapped accessible, and always: free!!

This month's Techno-Activism Third Monday is the Monday After The Day We
Fought Back. We'll be chatting with some of the key organizers of the
protest, both on the domestic and international side.
Come to EFF's headquarters at 815 Eddy St, at 6PM on Monday, and find
out about the tech, the strategy, the results of TDWFB -- and give your
feedback and ideas for tomorrow's fight.
We'll also be talking about outreach about digital security to the
communities who need it most. How do we teach crypto to vulnerable
groups in the real world?
Your hosts will be Danny O'Brien and Jillian York, with April Glaser as
your special guest-star.
Techno-Activism Third Mondays (TA3M) is an informal meetup designed to
connect software creators and activists who are interested in
censorship, surveillance, and open technology. Currently, TA3M are held
in fifteen cities throughout the world, and growing. As the name
implies, it is held on the third Monday of each month.
Here is where EFF is:
http://www.openstreetmap.org/go/TZHvUrLDP
Please turn up before 6PM -- we'll buzz you after that but before 6.16PM
if you call +1 408 480 3412.
See you there!

Hey all!
I need a co-working space for 3 people for tomorrow and Sunday that's
clean and has good internets. Something near a Bart station in
Berkeley, Oakland, or anywhere in SF would be good. On the cheaper side
would be nice.
Thanks,
Deno

==Consensus Items==
* Proposal to ban ardeen
**
https://lists.sudoroom.org/pipermail/sudo-discuss/2014-February/005374.html
** yar thinks ban sounds harsh - maybe temporary? 2 months?
** "To empower members to deal with problematic non-members, non-members
can be removed by a member who feels their behavior is problematic,
*unless* another member present in the space is willing to vouch for the
non-member as a guest. Non-members being asked to leave must be told that
they can further discuss the incident at a Wednesday meeting or on the
mailing list. Non-members can use the space as much as they want when
other members are present, but cannot access the space when no members are
there and have to leave when the last member leaves."
** Ardeen is present and pleading forgiveness, but Marc still doesn't trust
him
** Matt hadn't received an apology until now and is not happy. He finds
"the whole narrative disrespectful". He'd rather things be about the
community respecting each other and not about conflicts and bans. (?)
** Ardeen feels he tried to reach out and was treated with anger and
vendetta
** yar hears "it's not about sleeping or breaking rules, it's about
respect" but thinks the email seemed about exactly that
** conversation gets heated, yar imposes stack with 30 second time limit
each
** voting
*** 6 votes for a permanent ban of ardeen
*** 1 against - ardeen himself
*** 5 abstaining
*** this is less than 2/3. motion fails.
** vote on a temporary one-month banning of ardeen
*** 12 for
*** 0 against
*** 2 abstains
*** motion passes. Matt notes that the Public School has voted to uphold
our bans.
* proposal to ban sarah
** "She isn't here. Word she's left the city."
** "she's been sleeping here after being warned, and also knowingly ate my
food."
** "she's had conflicts at Noisebridge and refused arbitration there, which
is not a good sign"
** "I'd support this ban more if it were about violence or extreme
disrespect"
** "We need a committee on social affairs"
** voting
*** 5 in favor
*** 0 against
*** 6 abstentions
*** motion seems to fail?
*** Feedback from abstainers:
**** Having a calm person unattached to the conflict to serve as ally for
**** Permanent bans pretty harsh - people can change
**** Homelessness is a transient condition
**** process is broken since abstentions and no-votes seemed to be
equivalent here
**** Eliot suggests permanent bans be reserved for violent oppression, but
supports long-term bans
*** "I will reach out to her and say she's not banned but she's not welcome
and should come to a meeting"
*** JC offers mediation in future conflicts
* "sudo room resolves to allow the Internet Archive Federal Credit Union to
make deposits."
** There are no objections. We all feel pretty good to be voting on this.
* Suggestion that we auto-ban anyone who has been banned by noisebridge
unless at least one member objects. New bans to be adopted at each weekly
meeting. - juul
** See https://noisebridge.net/86 for current Noisebridge bans
** Matt suggests inserting a human approval method rather than auto-ban,
citing Value # 5 of sudo room's Articles of Association:
*** "Value human judgment over automation and efficiency."
** "Would this rule have solved problems in the past" "Yes" "yes" "yes"
"YES!"
** "is the burden on individuals to monitor the noisebridge banlist in
order to object in time?"
** "it literally just made the process easier with ardeen that public
school had a similar vote on our banlist"
*** "I didn't actually feel good mentioning BAPS' policy so I don't think
that's a point in favor"
** Brendan: "In considering banning individuals from sudo room, it is valid
to take into consideration any bans from other communities."
** "I'd prioritize specific kinds of bans such as those involving sexual
predators"
*** DOES THIS WORK?? "Noisebridge bans can be given a temporary ban at sudo
room by request of any member, to last until there is quorum to review the
ban. Sudo room will consider all Noisebridge bans as potential bans at sudo
room, going through the normal process"
** "There should be an opportunity to lift bans"
* Matt suggests a rule that our bureacracy can't be used against us:
** "Value fairness and common sense over prolonged process and bureaucracy."
** "I finds this unimplementable and a little ironic"
** "if you want that to change, develop a mentality for it, don't wait for
bureaucracy to solve it"
** "can we move this onto next week's agenda?" [laughter]
*** "I propose this be highly prioritized to next week"
** "does anybody have a reason this should not be consensed to be in our
articles?"
*** "I do. It's an awesome value, but just words."
**** That's sort of the point ^.^ it's a poem!
** No consensus yet, more workshopping.
* At the November 6, 2013 meeting, there was consensus that Marc Juul
should be the sole founder of our IRC channel, freenode.#sudoroom - this
was discussed on the mailing list, there have been no blocks or
alternatives proposed. This meeting, with 16 people present, affirms that
it has been solidly consensed on at this point. Sudoroom as an organization
will now reach out to Freenode to make it happen.
** Asked for objections four or five times. No objections. phew!
* Juul suggests that we change the articles such that bans require 2/3 of
the votes of present members, excluding abstainess.
** "you should just use a normal voting process and not that weird process
you just used"
** "can't consent on this now because the problem is deeper than this"
** "do i have to be a dues-paying member to vote?"
==Conflict Resolution==
* "kudos to facilitators"
==Misc==
* Learning Collective w/ Haley (samarasteele(a)gmail.com)
** villagecraft.org
** wants to have events here
==After meeting teamups==
* Cyberpunk LARPing and software Microcontroller development.

East Bay Maker Labs
Hi All,
We'll be launching the first *Biohackers in Residence program *at Berkeley
Biolabs (a way for Biohackers with promising commercial ideas to get access
to the lab regardless of your financial situation) next Thursday and I
wanted to send out an open invite to the event.
We'll also be having the team from *Tekla Labs* in who will be talking
about Open Source Global innovation in Biotech and the plans they're making
available to scientists and citizen scientists in the US and throughout the
world to help lower the cost of biotech.
http://www.meetup.com/Berkeley-Biolabs/events/166090902/
*p.s. don't forget tonight we're having our Open Source Bioreactor Hack
night at Berkeley Biolabs, bring your soldering irons as Sunny plans on
having a near final prototype for hacking at the event*
All the best,
Ryan
Tekla labs (UC Berkeley) and BBL Biohacker in Residence Launch
Talks:
Tekla Labs - Introduction to Tekla labs mission and an update on work done
so far to foster open innovation and access to low cost tools globally
Biohacker-In-Residence Program - An introduction to the program by Ron,
BBL's CSO and an invitation to apply, as well as an announcement of our
first Biohackers in Residence!
Speakers for the Event:
Lina Nilsson (one of MIT Tech Review's 35 Innovators under 35) and
co-founder of Tekla Labs will be speaking about lowering the cost of basic
biological research through making access to open source designs available
to all.
"Lina and the team offer another option: DIY. As cofounder of Tekla Labs,
an engineering collective on the Berkeley campus, she's curating and
distributing open-source, do-it-yourself designs for the gamut of common
lab gear. A shaker for separating excess dye from stained cells, for
instance, can be made from a discarded record turntable. A centrifuge can
be fashioned from a modified kitchen blender. A thermal cycler for
amplifying DNA requires only light bulbs and thermometers. In the hands of
scientists who historically have lacked access to equipment, such tools can
be powerful engines of innovation--generally, Nilsson says, at about
one-tenth the price of high-end commercial equipment."
http://www.technologyreview.com/lists/innovators-under-35/2013/visionary/li…
Ron Shigeta - Co-Founder and CSO of Berkeley Biolabs
will be launching Berkeley Biolabs Biohacker in Residence program.
The Hacker-in-Residence program was conceived as a way to foster biotech
inventorship, accelerate innovation and strengthen the DIYbio community we
love, as well as provide access to the tools and resources that for the
most part are still attached to large commercial or academic labs and
typically not easily accessible for passion projects or ideas.
Come and join us on Thursday and let's accelerate Biotech together!

We could use the sudo-crowd list for organizing. Also mobilizing around Equity Crowdfunding.

These are just my thoughts, with a grain of salt on specifics as I haven't been going to general meetings recently but I guess it's time to start doing that again since this is a matter of great importance.?

Hello Sudoers,
*T**omorrow* at *6:30*, you are invited to join us, at the fabled
'Noisebridge', as we investigate how to make better inferences using
Bayesian heuristics and algorithms.
You are welcome to bring your own data, qnd/or you can take part in
designing and implementing your very own Bayesian spam filter on the
infamous noisebridge-discuss archive.
If you have your own project, you are encouraged to talk about it and/or
work on it as well.
part of our machine learning
<https://noisebridge.net/wiki/Machine_Learning> series.
Food, beer, and cheer are all greatly appreciated.

FYI: per a previous thread, I got some information on the topic of
transitioning to employee ownership for those that are interested. The
plan is pretty thorough, but it is a draft, and it's not a cooperative
really.

Hi Julio-
Our plan is to become an ESOP - Employee Stock Ownership Plan. We've been
working with the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) to develop a
multi-stage process for becoming an ESOP and engendering an employee
culture of training and engagement in running the business. The current
draft of our plan is attached.
An ESOP is not a cooperative. ESOPs typically have a management structure
and a board of directors that make a majority of operational decisions.
Cooperatives typically run on a one-member, one-vote structure in which
business decisions are made by everyone.
Most ESOPs are the result of a conversion, typically when the founder wants
to exit from the business. You can get more information about ESOPs at this
link on NCEO's website:
https://www.nceo.org/articles/employee-ownership-esop-united-states.
Full disclosure: NCEO is an investor in our business.
Thanks

Hello Hackers, Activists, Designers, Policy Folks, Neighbors!
Our metropolis is under going rapid transformation. From mass evictions in
the Mission, predatory real estate companies in West Oakland, targeted
campaigns to make whole neighborhoods safe for the ultra wealthy, massive
income inequality in the streets, and systemic race, gender and class gaps
in the tech community.
LOL is holding an open hack night for anti-displacement projects at 7pm
each Thursday this month.
There are a lot of ongoing projects that need mapping, visualization, and
backend development -- One of which is aiming to plug holes in the Ellis
Act that is being debated in Sacramento right now. In addition, we need
creative ideas in how data and information can translate to impact on the
streets. If you are good with stats, numbers,
js/flash/lamp/rails/whatever stack you like, making pretty pictures, or
knowing what on the ground need, come by! If you have expertise in housing
policy or community development policy also come by! If you or someone
you know is facing displacement, come on by as a concerned community member!
One of our main projects that needs love is the Anti Eviction Mapping
Project, which is now making the rounds in Sacramento in order to provide
policy changes to the Ellis Act, and data visualization people can be extra
helpful here.
Liberating Ourselves Locally (LOL) is a gender balanced, person of color
led hack/collab/DIO space in East Oakland. 1234 23rd Ave, Oakland CA.

In the spirit of thinking globally and acting locally, the Oakland Privacy Working Group would be most grateful for your help in shutting down the Oakland Domain Awareness Center. We need a show of support - small ($3-10) donations - in order to proceed with our lawsuit against the City of Oakland to stop the National Surveillance State from building a Fusion Center in our own backyard (on Martin Luther King, Jr. Way!).
We have successfully pushed back on the City Council's awarding of the Department of Homeland Security grant contract for months. And while we've narrowed the time period in which the contractor would have to complete the job significantly (they have until the end of May), the City Council may very well vote to go with the proposed contractor at the Feb. 18 City Council meeting, despite the evidence we've brought that Schneider Electric is in violation of Oakland Nuclear Free Zone Ordinance. The latest word is that the City Council will waive this stop-gap feature of our city's laws despite knowing all that we know about the NSA, the OPD, and surveillance backdoors in our neighborhood. There may be nothing left to stop this runaway surveillance train other than suing our city government to cease and desist from building their PanOAKticon - the Nuclear option.
It is much more important that you give than how much - http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/spy-center-litigation.
There are several other ways in which the Oakland Privacy Group is going all out to stop this thing before it's too late. You can find out more at http://oaklandprivacy.wordpress.com/. Join the activist planning and discussion on our listserv at oaklandprivacyworkinggroup-subscribe(a)lists.riseup.net. Retweet a message from https://twitter.com/OaklandPrivacy to help #StopTheDAC. “We are the last free people. We are the people that have the last chance to act.” – Julian Assange.
While we are immensely grateful for larger donations, IT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT that we have MANY small donations, $3, $5, $10 from thousands of grassroots activists, in order to show broad support.
The Impact
THIS AFFECTS ALL OF US. If you believe in freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of the right to be anonymous in speech, freedom of thought, if you believe that we should be free from warrantless searches and seizures, that all are entitled to due process, that we are innocent until proven guilty, that probable cause is needed, if you value the hard fought freedoms won in the American Revolution, the Civil Rights and Free Speech Movements, and all those who lost their lives defending these rights, please help us. This fight is not only about the residents of Oakland, California as it will directly impact all of us, allowing further spying on US citizens.
The proposed Oakland spy center at issue in this litigation will conduct massive full-time surveillance and share information broadly, linking to various NSA and FBI intelligence centers and even private contractors. Data sharing platforms are being incorporated and further developed per project documents. The Dept. of Homeland Security has funded 78 of these 'fusion centers' around the country.
We Are Fighting Back
The Oakland Privacy Working Group, a coalition of civil liberties minded individuals, in concert with other civil liberties groups, seeks through litigation to prevent the awarding of a contract for Phase 2 implementation of a Dept. of Homeland Security funded spy center within the city limits of Oakland known as the Domain Awareness Center. Because of the expiring nature of the federal grants funding the spy center, there is a strong likelihood that disqualification of the remaining bidders will halt the entire project due to loss of funding.
What We Need
We are asking you, the larger community, for $10,000 for the first phase of litigation, an injunction and lawsuit against the City of Oakland to prevent the award of the Phase 2 contract, and dismantling of the work completed under the Phase 1 contract.
We are anticipating a protracted battle not only on the Phase 2 contract itself, but the larger overall battle of civil liberties infringement inherent in this project. We have a real chance at turning back the military-industrial-intelligence complex from daily intrusion and spying into our lives. With just a $5 donation, it only takes 2,000 people to make a loud statement that spying on citizens will not be tolerated! The Snowden revelations make clear that unless the intelligence community is forced to comply with the law, it surely will not.

Hello Sudoers!
Come Plerk (play + werk!) it out in the DIY Molecular Cloning Class tonight
at SudoRoom (6:30p-8p -at the latest).
Throughout the course of the entire class we will be isolating genes from
the banana genome, cloning them into expression vectors and purifying
protein our banana proteins. It's a multi-month process that is going to be
great!
Tonight (class 2) we will be covering the following:
(1) DNA discussion review
(2) performing DNA extractions from banana and discussing the chemical
processes happening at each step
(3) Digesting our DNA with DNAse enzyme (community sourced :-) ),
(4) Analyzing our samples on Agarose gel
(5) Visualizing our cut DNA.
For those of you who are interested in getting some wet lab experience,
come on out. It's going to be fun!
See you tonight.

I didn't see one on the calendar, but seem to recall seeing something
like that in the past.
A few months ago I laid out $180 to but something called a Ion
Blockrocker Bluetooth to have a portable amplifier/speaker/microphone
thingie for events. It was more or less adequate, but shortly after I
got it the 3.5mm IN jack became unseated and now it doesn't make an
adequate connection. I can still access the device by bluetooth, but
not every device has bluetooth and bluetooth can be a bit finicky during
an event, as we found out at the Anti-DAC event last Tuesday.. It looks
like it has screws so disassembling it would probably be easy, but I
have about as much dexterity in my fingers as most folks have in their
toes and am not sure I would be able to figure out how to re-seat the
little audio-in aperture. I guess I could RMA the thing, but it is big,
it would probably cost me $40 to send it back.
http://www.ionaudio.com/products/details/blockrockerbluetooth
Anyway, if anyone feels like having a crack at it, I'd be happy to
schlep it to the room.

IMO this is the ideal loaner bike- it's simple, light, not too nice but not
a total piece of crap, and with a couple quick adjustments damn near anyone
can ride it safely and comfortably. Best of all, I can build something like
this out of junk with basic tools in a few hours so it's not a huge loss if
it doesn't come back.
Which brings me to my next point. I think loaning bikes out is a great
idea, as long as there's an understanding that the the word "loan" implies
that the item in question will be returned in the same condition (or close
to it) in a timely fashion. Sudoers are pretty good about this...but when
non-members walk out of here with bikes without leaving some kind of
contact info or a name or a clear idea of what the terms of the loan are,
it's even odds as to whether it will come back in working order. So as a
hedge against any future misunderstandings, we should at least write down a
name, how we can get a hold of them, and how long they need the bike for.
This can be on a discretionary basis but I can't think of a reason why we
shouldn't keep track of who has what.
Anyway...the old sudo bike has been slightly revised- longer seatpost, new
bars and stem so there's a shorter reach on the bars, new fender/front and
rear light, broken and/or unnecessary crap removed, brakes kind of work
now...to go beyond making it safe (safer?) and rideable would be like
polishing a turd, and I need less of that in my life right now. I took a
pic but my antique iPhone doesn't want to give it up. Selah.
So they're here if you want to try them out. Enjoy.

Hi sudo!
We've been in the process of more clearly defining membership, which will
in turn help to clarify our monthly income as well as access issues.
*If you consider yourself to be a current member of Sudo Room, please email
me the following details:*
*Name (can be pseudonymous)
*Contact Email
*Monthly contribution [as per the new $10 minimum
amendment<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Articles_of_Association#Sub-Section_3.4.3_Dues>
]
*Form of payment [cash, check, Gittip, WePay]
*Optional: Core project(s) / group(s) you're working on / with.
I'm setting up a SeltzerCRM instance to track door access codes and
donations and remind members to pay if they're past due.
Once we have you as a registered, dues-paying member in the system, the
next step will be assigning access codes.
*Sudo Room remains, as always, open to anyone to drop in so long as a
member is present! Becoming a member means you get your own keycode and the
ability to vote on consensus items.*
For those unable to pay the $10 minimum, please propose a worktrade
alternative. We've recently added a New Members component to the weekly
meeting agenda, so we can acknowledge new members and work out the details
of their contributions then. I'm going to propose that once a month during
this section, we go through work/trade memberships and check that a given
project/task has been happening as proposed. Work/trade tasks might include:
* Holding a regular class or workshop (eg; 3D Tuesdays, Today We Learned)
* Maintaining infrastructure (such as the door rpi, the network, web
presence)
* Cleaning (especially the common space kitchen, floor and furniture)
* Organizing the Room of Stuff
* Writing blog posts (kudos to Romy, who's been super prolific this year
already!)
* Think of anything that would positively contribute to the space and/or
community!
Cheers,
/jnny

101 Women Artists Who Got Wikipedia Pages This Week
Last Saturday, about 600 volunteers in 31 venues around the globe engaged

In the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, and the
United Kingdom, in nonprofits and art schools, in museums and universities,
these people--mostly women--set out to write entries, uncredited and unpaid,

Brown Bag Seminar: A Reality Game to Cross Disciplines
With Benjamin Stokes
Wednesday, February 12, 2014, 12:10 pm - 1:00 pm
107 South Hall
Educational and civic games are typically preparatory, teaching skills and information to be applied later. Yet the rise of reality gaming introduces a new possibility: that the game directly shapes real-world networks, even as it educates. Networks are a novel target for educational games, despite the vital importance of networks for educational attainment, securing jobs and even civic engagement.
Benjamin Stokes investigates how digital media foster civic engagement, informal learning, and activism. He is currently studying how mobile media and videogames can advance social justice by bridging online and offline participation. Previously he co-founded Games for Change, the branch of the serious games movement focused on social issues and nonprofit organizations. Most recently, he was an education program officer at the MacArthur Foundation in their portfolio on Digital Media and Learning. Benjamin has also led the development of original digital media properties: at the educational nonprofit NetAid, his team created digital games and an activist training website that engaged more than 150,000 youth in fighting extreme poverty. Benjamin is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Southern California in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

Hi,
The Association of Professional Model Makers (APMM) conference in San Jose is looking for someone to give a 1-hour Arduino demo on 7-March or 8-March. In return you get a day pass, lunch, and keynote dinner.
I'd love to do it, but I'll be out of town (my panel got accepted at SXSW).
If you're interested, or know anyone who might be, please contact Sam, who's email is shown in her email, below.
Best,
Mitch.

Hello Mitch,

Our workshops take place on Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th, between 9AM and 5PM. Would you be able to do that for us? We can give you a day-pass to our conference, and include you in our workshop lunch or the keynote dinner that day (our keynote speaker is David Kelley of IDEO!).
Please let me know if this is something that piques your interest or fits your schedule.
Thanks much!

There is sawdust on the floor and on tools, the "keep this space clear" table top is not clear. And various other items are not put away.
Please do not do this, and if you see someone doing it, ask them when they plan to improve the space for others to use.

Hey, I just fixed a hack on the SudoRoom main page.
Someone is hacking the SudoRoom Wiki - I don't know who, I know this
probably happens often. Are there safety precautions?

I undid the "hardcore jerkey action" - and I saw that someone also undid

Any idea wh'os doing this?

Hey all,
Seeking consensus next week. To open an account with the Internet Archive
Federal Credit Union http://iafcu.org/ we need to pass a resolution for
depository authorization--too allow the IAFCU to make deposits.
I propose the following based on the explanation provided to me by IAFCU
staff to reach consensus in the next two meetings:
"sudo room resolves to allow the Internet Archive Federal Credit Union to
make deposits."

Hey all,
I'm working out a series of scripts, or a "wrapper" if you will, to layer
on top of an existing Linux installation with all the necessary tidbits to
help a person be able to start hacking on their open source project
immediately in their current hackerspace (while minimizing setup time and
computer headaches). I'll post up a working script by the middle of next
week and try to incorporate all feature requests.
This can be portable, but for right now I'm focusing on Debian-based
distributions (Mint, Ubuntu, #!, Tails, etc.) to get started.
How will it work?
Run a live CD such as Tails and run the wrapper to immediately set you up
with all necessary tools and scripts. Save all the changes you like to
persistent storage (a thumb drive or hard disk) so you'll never have to
repeat the process. Code hosted on
Github<https://github.com/sunjam/hak/wiki/Feature-Request>so you can
vet and fork it.
Is this for a specific hackerspace?
No, my hope is that the idea will be incorporated by anyone needing a
little assistance with using open source tools. I also see a lot of
confused people who cannot get on the wireless without assistance in their
local hackerspace.
Why do I need it?
Step into X hackerspace for the first time and get instant access to the
internet, open the most recent class notes, print a document on the
printer, and anything else you can imagine.
How can I help?
Submit your feature
requests<https://github.com/sunjam/hak/wiki/Feature-Request>and code
to Github. Also, spread the word to any person or space who may
be interested.
Hi Folks,
Went over to Ace Monster Toys today for the first time for their microcontroller meetup. Similar mix of first time visitors and people randomly hacking on other things interacting. Also went down and checked out their shop, definitely pretty well set up on the fabrication side. Anyone care to join for another visit to do some laser cutting and whatnot?
What ever happened to the idea of a federated coalition? Would anyone else be interested in coming up with a scheme of being a member of multiple spaces? One theory just brainstorming would be to have an RFID key or something to track what proportion of time is spent at various spaces and allocate membership dues proportionately. I talked to them about applying their starving hacker rate to people with an existing hackerspace membership but the combined total would still be higher than necessary. Thoughts?
Hol
Two bans have been proposed at tonight's sudo room meeting. They are up for
discussion on the mailing list for a week before we decide vote at next
weeks meeting. Banning will require that 2/3 of the members present at next
weeks meeting agree to the bans.
The people up for bans are:
* Ardeen (big read beard)
* Sarah (short-haired lady)
These people have been problematic in a few different ways, mainly in their
use of the space to sleep and as a general living space even after being
told firmly that their sleeping in the space is not ok. They are not sudo
room members.

Hi Adams Point friends and neighbors,
I think many of you know that Andrew and I have been participating in the Fire Dept's free community disaster preparation training over the last few months. With the threat of fire looming over us (in addition to earthquakes), we feel some increased urgency in making sure we, as neighbors are prepared. We've been working with some other neighbors to bring CORE I and II trainings right here to Adams Point on Sat, March 1st at the Bellevue Club.
In the event of a disaster,
like a fire or earthquake, we will be on our own for 7-10 days.... So
this is a great opportunity for us to prepare as neighbors. We must
register - follow the link here or below: http://gatheringadamspoint.wordpress.com.. Also, if you are interested, but can't make the date, the FD has additional trainings scheduled at other locations: http://www2.oaklandnet.com/oakca1/groups/fire/documents/webcontent/oak04420…
I hope you'll think about joining for at least CORE I - the morning training. Please forward to others who you think may be interested.
Take care,
Miriam

• Build community as you develop and share your skills and resources to
protect yourself, your family and home, and your neighborhood, and
• Increase the safety and wellbeing of your family and neighborhood.
Gathering Adams Point seeks to increase the number of CORE trained residents and to create a network of engaged neighbors.
9:30 – 12 CORE I
• Reduce common household hazards
• Create family emergency and evacuation plans
• Prepare emergency supply kits
• Respond to earthquakes, fires, chemical accidents, floods and terrorist threats

Hi guys,
Would y'all be down to co-host another event with BAPS? Anarchists from
Chile on a speaking tour of the US.
here's the gist:
http://chilespeakingtour.wordpress.com/https://www.facebook.com/strugglingtowinhttps://sudoroom.org/ai1ec_event/struggling-to-win-anarchists-building-popu…
As BAPS will be hosting too, there will be no donation boxes allowed at
this event..
And, I promise I won't switch this up to be a sudo-only-sponsored event as
with what happened with the Spied Upon event the day before. I'm only just
hoping to get sudo and baps to do more events together, and this is one of
them -
I'm happy to do all the organizing and promotion for this event, also.
I'll be bringing this up at tonight's meeting to see what y'all think -
Best,
