[*As Sudo phone secretary (I set up the business number required for us to
be acknowledged as a "Google Place"), I get many interesting calls--from

talk to and people asking when we're open.*]
Hi Veggie Friends in Tech,
If you or a friend is looking for a place and want to live in a
veggie/vegan house, please give me a call. I live in a nice house in
Oakland by the lake and looking to have one roommate who is vegetarian or
vegan (I am vegan).
I will give you more details when you call or text. Please tell me that you

hi everyone,
i'm here with liberty and we'd like to follow up on last week's
*classy*action item:
"Who the fuck are we?" Assessing folks who've signed up to be members [in
final tab on the fiscal solvency sheet] [Danny, Liberty, Brendan]"
unfortunately i don't have danny or brendan's email (and am even not sure
if they are on this list). could someone possibly confirm whether they are
on this list or copy them on a reply to myself and liberty? let's have some
updates for tomorrow!
best,
marina
Hi everyone!
I'm working with Judi from San Leandro to put together our first BACH [Bay
Area Consortium of Hackerspaces] newsletter. We'd like to highlight the
projects people are working on in various hackerspaces around the Bay Area.
*Please reply to this thread with a one-sentence description of something
you've been working on at the space* (feel free to add more details, but
start with a sentence that summarizes so I don't have to ;) ).
I'll start: The Oakland mesh group just finished a successful crowdfunding
campaign <https://www.wepay.com/xtewtey> to bootstrap the first 100 nodes,
consisting of low-cost routers and antennas to make point-to-point wifi
connections across the East Bay.
Mesh networks are awesome because they don't depend on the existing
centralized Internet Service Providers to function. Though they can be
connected to the Internet as we know it now, a mesh provides a
decentralized means of communication with our local community. We view mesh
networks as a means of reconnecting to our neighbors, supporting local
businesses, and enabling grassroots community collaboration. In the event
of disaster or government censorship, an active mesh network is a resilient
mode of communication and sharing of information. Learn
more<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Mesh>
.
Thanks!

hi everyone,
we'll be sudo kid-ing this evening as usual. come bring your kids or come
do things with kids! we will accept all activities you'd like to do.
unfortunately our radio is down for maintenance, but we will have other
things to do!
best,
marina
There used to be a way to listen online to OPD's radio communications
here: http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/10182
This required someone in the city to connect an analog radio and serve
the content digitally. They regularly had over 100 listeners, and
peaked at 3000+ during crisis events. But it was hosted in an office
that just closed shop and so as of today, they had to take down their
feed. Right now I don't think there's another way to listen to OPD
online.
Perhaps this is a gap that Sudoroom could fill? Does anybody know how
to get something like this set up? I imagine we'd need to relay to a
data center because of the large number of streamers. Or maybe just
colocate locally? Does anyone know a cheap colo in Oakland?
relevant to someone's interests i am sure.

A group of us Occupy Oaklanders and fellow-travelers would like to have
a meeting at the sudoroom to organize opposition to the Domain Awareness
Center that the $hitty Council unanimously approved funding of last
Tuesday.

We are thinking maybe Wednesday, August 14th at 6 PM. Seems like
Wednesday is one of the less hectic days, I attended the weekly meetup a
couple of weeks ago and it didn't seem too huge, maybe we could nestle
in the quadrilateral of chairs and couches near the entrance to the
sudoroom proper without being unduly burdensome. If it makes our
presence marginally less loathsome I'll bring a 12 pack or so of IPA to
share with the Meetniks. Anyway, if no one objects by tomorrow
afternoon I'll take the liberty of penciling in our meeting on the
sudoroom & OO calendars.

Hey everyone
Just wanted to post here that we'll be continuing the Bioinfomatics series at Sudoroom next sunday (August 11) at 7 p.m. We had several awesome sudoroomers show up and I wanted to let everyone know about it.
We'll be breaking into some genome and gene data and digging a little into biopython to do some sequence extractions. All this will get us started in an open source project to contribute to the glowingplant project.
http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/132990982/
See also the east bay express cover article on glowing plants this weekend? http://www.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/bio-hackers/Content?oid=3669408
hi everyone,
reorganization day 2 is continuing as we speak. lots of help is needed to
clear sudo room out and put sudo room back together.
come help make sudo room what you want it to be!

Dear All,
I just wanted to announce the second Bio-informatics class at Sudo room,
all Sudo'ers interested in getting a deeper understanding of
bio-informatics are welcome to attend.
After the last successful Bio-informatics class with 21 attendees, Ron's
very kindly offered to volunteer again to help teach aspiring digital
biohackers the tricks of the trade :)
Just as a side note, Oakland nights live is currently booking a slot on
Sunday but the text on the booking says that it's on Saturday, so I'm
assuming that it was an incorrect booking date.
Hack on and let Ron or I know if you have any questions :)

We had a wonderful ladder. It was tall, safe, had two sturdy feet. It
said Rachel in blue marker all over it, because it belongs to a sudoer
who let us use it for a long time. It is now missing, just when we
need it for space cleaning. Did any of you take it? Does any of you
know where it might be?
If this got stolen we will be sad.
Hey all-
My name is Steve and was involved in several Brain-Computer
Interface (BCI) hacks on McHawking, the wheelchair robot, back when it
lived at Noisebridge:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Brain-Controlled-Wheelchair/
<http://www.instructables.com/id/Brain-Controlled-Wheelchair/>
About 3-4 of us are banding together over the next several days to
revisit and extend that work. Jake gave a heads up as to its new
location and we're all looking forward to visiting the space (for most
if not all of us it will be our first time there).
I wanted to reach out and make sure we're going about this the
right way, and of course invite anyone else who interested in either
robotics or BCI to join us and get involved. We look to published
whatever we do as open source and will try to update the Sudo Room wiki
(as my quick search and review of the mailing list archives only turned
up last month's introduction).
We're still firming up timing but will probably drop by tomorrow
(Sunday) afternoon and play Monday and Tuesday by ear. Feel free to
message me on or off list if anyone is keen.
Cheers!
Steve
Hey Sudoroom: I made pickles this week and some fancy-looking mold grew
on them. Not good for eating, but a treat for watching, so I thought
you'd all like to see!
It reminds me a bit of an electron micrograph of a growing axon (see

Bonus points to any of you who can identify the type of fungus (I
haven't been able to yet).

i normally don't elevate my voice, but it WILL be organizing everything

we have already started sorting, identifying, and moving things around.
please come any time tomorrow to move lots of stuff and get sudo room

Anyone interested in/on hacking in/on the ambulance?
I've got a few projects in mind, chiefly in gearing up for longer trips
outside the bay area (aka: Burning Man), and in the short term getting
around hackerspaces in the bay area to build along the way.
Right now I'm tapped on space and resources, and can only drive short
distance, or not at all, so would be great to find somewhere/someone nearby
to work on some mechanical issues.
I'd also like to double the floor space by adding storage bins and some
sort of pop-up to the roof (ideally made of solar panels) to make more of a
work space, and some sort of ladder to get up to it.
I've also got a 16' flatbed trailer that I can pull, and would be
interested in developing ideas to make that a mobile space as well,
potentially something along the lines of a parkable parklet that could be
moved around.
So if you've got some time, materials or capital get in touch.

Some of MY specific goals for Saturday will be:
* A car-full of e-waste
* Sudoroom's bookshelves cleared of everything but books
* Better use of storage above the radio room
* Better sleeping arrangements for McHawking
* Somehow address that giant wooden arcade enclosure
Some specific infrastructure I'd like to see:
* overhead bike racks in our space behind the elevator
* new shelving units in the walk-in closet
* shelves installed in the telecloset
Some things we've already agreed to build but haven't yet:
* shelf for the door equipment downstairs
hi everyone,
this coming weekend (aug 3-4) will be the weekend of *total
reorganization*at sudo room.
we will be:
- taking every thing out of sudo room
- determining what should go and what should stay
- putting everything back in to sudo room in an arranged way
so please show up bright and early on saturday (i'll be here at 9:30) and
we'll see how far we get on saturday before we see about sunday!
please feel free to get started this week by taking things out of the space
if they are yours and you are no longer using them, determining what you
want to remain in the space, cleaning, and pinging the list about specific
items.

May I humbly propose a more targeted and limited agenda?
1) Without moving EVERYTHING, identify things that sudoroom does
not need and can get rid of. Carry those out to a go-away pile.
2) Identify areas of Sudoroom that can be upgraded to more
efficient use of vertical space - this means shelving. In particular,
I have in mind those shelving units for the walk-in closet and Hol's
idea for building shelves up in the telecloset.
3) Plan, measure, collect or buy materials
4) Move whatever's in the way of those new shelves
5) Build those shelves
I believe this simple schedule can make better use of everybody's
awesome energy when the time comes. 1-2-3 can be on Saturday and 4-5
on Sunday. Populating the shelves can happen naturally and
do-ocratically after the event.
Hey everyone,
Wanted to make sure you all heard about an event taking place at Oakland
School of the Arts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week.
Intellectuals and activists from around the world will gather to discuss
new horizons in education, economics, religion and politics. If you've ever
wanted to see Governor Jerry Brown converse with leading anarchist
intellectuals, this is your chance! Details

Please help spread the word to people who might be interested in attending.
Hope to see some of you there!

Hi Folks,
Come on out tonight for a special edition of MHN - inner door 2.0 construction, sudo kids robotics, closed loop control basics for absolute newbies (yes YOU - if you've made the LED on pin13 blink, you're ready run a reactor) with sensors and actuators, and my personal nemesis the beer brewing machine. We might even make it through the night without frying any silicon!
(but don't bet the farm on it)
I'll be there around 5:30, planning to have printers ready for disassembly with the kiddos by 6:30, and we can go over control basics starting around 9 and ease into the 2000 watt closed loop control session, going until either the beer machine works or we fall prey to the debugging/plumbing/soldering/resoldering spiral of sleepy brain.
Cheers,
Hol
Hi all!
Our lovely sudoor access system is currently broken. Things look okay from
the server side, so it's likely a hardware issue. Granted, the whole thing
is a bit janky, so I think it's finally time to upgrade to sudoor v2. I'd
like to fix it, but don't have experience, so I thought I'd come to
Microcontroller
Hacking Night<https://sudoroom.org/ai1ec_event/microcontroller-hack-night/?instance_id=65…>tomorrow
and see what I can do. If anyone owns or could suggest where to
procure the following, that'd be rad!:
- thin and thick wire mounting materials
- male pinheaders to secure wires to the breadboard
- a case for the t1 microcontroller, and screws to mount it to the wall
- definitely some soldering to be done as well [we have the tools and
material for this at least]

Hi fellow Sudoers,
Art Murmur is coming up next Friday.
With the BACE Timebank and EBBX (East bay Barter Exchange) we are planning
a
community potluck and a brainstorming and cross pollination event about the
new economy
in the common room. Is there still some of the super tasty Sudo-mate left?
:) What about Subiir?
Looking forward to see many creative people Friday at Sudoroom and hope
many of you join for the event,
best case we get a lot of folks motivated from all the awesome groups that
share the common space...
https://sudoroom.org/ai1ec_event/the-new-economy-huddle/
About to send it over the public school list.
Who knows how to best reach the Community Democracy Project, Oakland Wiki,
Mesh Network? Matt, Vicky, Jenny?
Any groups I forgot?
How can we get it on the new shared calendar with the Public School?
Thanks a lot,
Patrick

Skill-share Swap-meet Event] at 2141 Broadway, hosted by the BACE Timebank.
Food was shared, friends were made, and all articulated things they needed
and things they had to offer. We're planning to make this a monthly event
on Third Fridays, and would love for this to be a collaborative project
with The Public School!
*This* Friday, we're having a co-presentation by BACE and EBBX [East Bay
Barter Exchange], followed by an open discussion of how to design cash-free
exchange systems. Bring some food and join us in cultivating a humane
economy!

*The New Economy Huddle*
Come join us for a public presentation and brainstorm for future events to
usher in The New Economy. This Friday’s Huddle is being co-presented by
BACE and EBBX–East Bay Barter Exchange. It will be an open format inviting
input from members of our community for designing robust cash-free systems
of exchange. We invite all to bring a dish to share in pot-luck and your
thoughts for what ways would cash-free methods of currency inspire you the
most. We look forward to your joining us–

Hey all,
better late than never?
I remember some folks talking about setting up carpools/caravans awhile
back,a quick perusal on the list doesn't turn up anything, and it was
suggested to check on the list, so ..
No pressure to reply, just thought I'd drop a line to checkin, as I'm
writing this I realize the lateness makes all impractical, but, meh! Ok
bye! <3
hi everyone,
just a reminder that sudo kids is still looking for folks who want to be
involved in determining and building the future of this program. we are
growing (more kids will be coming this tuesday!) and there are actually
limitless opportunities for trying out different activities and ideas (i
just view the children as test subjects for experiments on
learning...everyone does that right?).
contact me or ray if you want to do one-off or regular activities or if you
want to be a part of coordinating and helping shape the future of the
program.
best,
marina

Greetings!
While Subiir believes in the free flow of alcohol with taste (aka beer) for
everyone, we also acknowledge that sometimes, building up expectations to a
joyous taste-explosion has its worth as well.
We are pleased to announce that the drought of Subiir continues for 3 more
weeks. And we are even more pleased to announce that in 3 weeks, not only
will we release a batch of delicious ipa (batch #6 aka. BitLite), we too
shall release a batch of delicious cream ale (batch #7 aka. Creamy Delight)
at the same time. *What a time to be alive!*
*Wait! There is More!*
- *Open finances:* We're starting to track our expenses paid, donations
received, and donations passed on to sudo room. its still work in progress.
You can follow here: http://bit.ly/subiir all feedback appreciated
- *New investments:* We want to acquire one more propane burner and one
more turkey fryer, so that we can make two batches at once. Donations
received from coming batches will go toward that. And if you have either of
those that you are willing to part with, let us know.
- *You Are Subiir:* We think it is sad our gear is only used every 3
weeks to brew subiir. We want to experiment with letting others brew on it.
if you are itnerested in brewing your own beer on our setup, get in touch.
- *Learn to brew:* On that note, our brew days are open to anyone and
everyone. if you are interested in coming around to learn and hang out, get
in touch and we will keep you in the loop of when we brew. The brewing of
batch #8 will take place within a weeks time.
That is all for now. it seems appropriate to quote the infamous Queen
Lagunitas the MCXXXii:
Beer speaks, people mumble.
Cheers everyone, and make a great day,
Morten on behalf of all of us
Hey sudoers!
So I compiled our clothes/textiles they can stay or be donated but I though it might be helpful to visualize how much we have. I can help donate them if there are no objections.
The other pile is a stack of 7 printers that were labeled as jam monsters. Tom helpfully assembled into a standing desk station. While ergonomic we both agree that they may make a better tear down project for sudo kids or e-recycled.
I don't want to leave these piles here for more then a day because I don't want to clutter the room. If no one has any objections I'll get them squared away by end of day Monday (think midnight).

Most of the clothing is actually scrap fabric, so wouldn't be suitable
for donating as clothing. I think we should sort out the wearable
items first, so as not to waste the time of any shelters.
Dear All,
Please find attached a video recording of Ron's talk from earlier
today on: Bio-Data,
Bioinformatics and the Gears that Make Biological Machines Tick
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RnpkmgH40o
Sorry for the light quality, we'll try to correct that for the next class
The intersection of biology and computer science is showing tremendous
potential. Literally thousands of data sources great and small are publicly
available now. Come and enjoy a low key introduction to all the 'omes' -
genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, methylomes, metabolomes, etc. We'll
play with some of the more useful data sources, tools and biological
pathways.
No biology training is necessary - the talk will be accessible to anyone.
Programming skills are useful, but not necessary.
If you have a laptop, please bring it. We will try to look at data in the
class and preview a couple of tools.
Cygwin on windows machines, OsX or linux are useful here, but we can go
over these at the time if needed.
We will be designing a project for anyone who wants to go deeper and get
more experience with Bioinformatics.
Ron Shigeta PhD has been doing bioinformatics for 12 years in biotech in
the east bay, before that he made biological information as a protein
crystallographer.!
