The answer is http://preyproject.com
you can install this free software on your laptop and it hides, amd just
waits. You create a login on preyproject.com (also free) and if your
laptop goes missing, you log in and tell it to start tracking it!
that means that you can find out what your computer is doing, what network
it's on, and even take pictures through the camera. If you get really
close, and need to actually locate it, you can make it make a loud noise!
this requires you making your computer usable without a password, which i
recommend to everyone anyway. If your computer gets stolen and it's
locked with a password, they will simply turn it off and sell it to a pro
who will format the hard drive and sell it.
If your computer is welcoming and without a password, the thief might keep
it around and watch your movies, and connect to the internet at their
house and things like that. Then you can track it down and get it back,
along with all your precious data.
Now you know.

I came into Noisebridge today, and it's buzzing here. People are moving
around, teaching and working. There is a very positive vibe. There were
people at the library on the chairs who weren't sleeping there, they were
talking about ideas with JC. It was cool.
The bathrooms were sparkling clean.
High feeling of excellence and cool things soon to happen. Telling people
at SudoRoom and other organizations about the upcoming Noisebridge party.
Turing is pleasant, quiet and nice to work in since I'm learning Python
right now for fun. I'm able to concentrate, and then when I'm done I can go
out and enjoy the vibe.
This sure beats the past few Sundays I've had!

now that we've installed a big on/off switch for the elevator upstairs,
which locks out calling it from downstairs, there is no more need to use
the Emergency Stop to lock the elevator.
In order to help with safety and comply with elevator laws, we should
install a loud alarm bell that rings continuously if the emergency stop is
activated. Since the only time the emergency stop will be used will be
emergencies, this will help save lives by alerting people to the fact that
there is an emergency.
we should also post a sign in the elevator, warning that use of the
emergency stop button for non-emergencies is against elevator law and can
be punished as a misdemeanor with up to one year in Real jail.
the first time someone decides to do it anyway, they will wake up all the
sleeping tenants and get a stern talking-to
its not george anymore is it?
the alterative is, we add a relay to bypass the stop switch long enough to
get the elevator down and open.. problem solved.
come on people, we are hackers! lets hack our problems!
There is now a large paper chart in Sudoroom, on the door between the
sudo sink and the buzzer phone. It breaks up the next month or so into
3-hour blocks, and you can pen yourself in for any blocks you like.
The idea is for people to commit to being at Sudoroom at certain
hours, and to identify empty slots, in an effort to help keep Sudoroom
open as often as possible!
Already I am signed up for tomorrow 9-3pm, and another sudoer has
signed up for 9-2 on Friday.
More hi-tech solutions are welcome, but we are starting simple in the
interest of it actually happening. :)
Due to incredible enthusiasm and demand, Sudo Room will now be hosting
monthly Cryptoparties! Join us from 2-5pm every Third Sunday to learn about
digital security and get up and running with basic tools for privacy and
anonymity.
*
*
*What's a Cryptoparty?*
A Cryptoparty is a safe space for learning about digital security, privacy
and anonymity. In the wake of Snowden's leak of the NSA's PRISM project,
digital security has become a widespread concern. What most people don't
know enough about is the advantages and disadvantages of various tools such
as TOR, GPG, and OTR.
*That's a lot of acronyms!
*
No worries! Friendly geeks will be giving presentations, answering any
questions, and leading hands-on workshops to get you comfortable using the
right tools for you. By the end of the day, you'll have learned security
techniques & software, understand why responsible security is important,
and have made friends with other proactive residents! Bring your phone and
your laptop. *All* skill levels are welcome!
Spread to your networks. Fliers to come!

Hey folks,
If you have a TIL for things like programming, online books offer a more
structured way for people to follow up than simply plowing through blogs.
*If someone has a San Francisco public library card they are able to read
many of these books online [for free]*
For example here are a bunch of O'Reilly etc ebooks for Python:
http://sflib1.sfpl.org/search/X?SEARCH=python&x=48&y=10&searchscope=1&p=&m=…
This might be a nice thing to put on a TIL page or to email people if they
are part of the python meetup
hi everyone,
it is july 24th and we currently have* $1929.61 *in our account. on aug 1
we will owe approximately *$1700*. this means that we get to have a
hackerspace for another month, but it also means that we will be about $300
below our $500 account minimum (as reqd by the bank).
as such, we very much encourage you to pay your dues or contribute a one
time payment to help us stay above our minimum balance. please contribute
in one of these ways:
1) online (via wepay): https://sudoroom.org/
2) online (via gittip): https://www.gittip.com/sudoroom/
3) in person (anytime): please drop cash or checks into the clear plastic
box by the door that goes to the elevator
4) in person (at meetings): bring cash or checks to wed. meetings.

LOL (Liberating Ourselves Locally) will be open again this week, Friday
from noon-5pm. LOL is a hackerspace located in the San Antonio neighborhood
of east Oakland, and was founded by and for people of color, women, queer
peeps and others underrepresented in tech.
Come check it out if you haven't already--it's awesome!
LOL is located at:
1234 23rd Avenue
x-street International Blvd.
Hey folks, I'm new on this list, I first visited the sudoroom a month
ago or so at the last Cryptoparty and became a member that evening. Some
of you may have seen me around, I am a tremendously obese older bloke
who generally sports stained suspenders. I have been working with
Occupy Oakland for some time and I'm on their web committee, where I've
worked with Bill B. & Will H. and perhaps some of the rest of you.
Anywho, as you may know last Tuesday the Oakland City Council tried to
slip authorization to spend another $2 million bucks on to the
supposedly non-controversial consent calender, but a number of us got
wind of it and showed up to harangue them so the council set the meeting
for next Tuesday, July 30th at 6:30 or so.
occupyoakland.org/2013/07/sign-up-and-speak-out-against-government-surveill…http://occupyoakland.org/2013/07/stop-the-oakland-dac-surveillance-city-spe…
We are encouraging folks to sign speaker cards and speak out against
funding this further movement towards a surveillance state, if you look
at the second article towards the bottom you can see basic instructions
about how to fill out a speaker card so you can tell the council what
you think of tying all the cameras, license plate readers, and other
sensors from the city, private security, the OUSD, BART, CalTrans, etc.
together to keep an eye on the citizenry.
Occupy Oakland discussed also having a rally in front of City Hall,
perhaps at 5PM before the council meeting to make a bit of noise.
We'd like to have a meeting Thursday to do a bit of research and plan a
rally, I thought we might meet at the sudoroom commons area. I know
there are already several events planned on an ongoing basis for
Thursdays, the Oakland Wiki meeting as well as Wifi Mesh, Python &
Javascript meetups. Do you folks think a few of us would get under foot
or should I call the meeting for the Oakland Public Library Main Branch
teen room or perhaps my fetid domicile? The OPL teen room is open until
8PM.
Solidarity whenever,
Ed
Hi Sudoroomies!
We've been planning some cool bio meetups for Counter Culture Labs, and
lots of people were excited about doing one on brewing
kombucha<http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Big-Batch-of-Kombucha/>.
I figured it would be great to do this at sudoroom, and make a joint
sudo/CCL party/workshop out of it!
Do any of you have a nice healthy kombucha "mother" at the moment? We want
to do some microbiology experiments on the culture in the future, so it
should be a natural one that has been propagated for a long time, not
something started from a store-bought bottle (those typically use a single
strain, rather than the complex mixture of bacteria and yeasts you find in
a real kombucha mother).
We have a slot in our meetup calendar penciled in for a kombucha meeting
for the week after next (next week is
bioinformatics<http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/129899352/>!)
I figure that may leave us just enough time to brew a big batch in advance
of the meetup, so we'd have enough kombucha for tasting, and enough mother
to hand out to anyone who wants to participate and brew their own batch!
So... let me know if (a) you have a kombucha mother we can use, (b) would
be interested in brewing up a big batch in advance of the meetup, and/or
(c) would be interested in helping to lead the meetup the week after next
(exact date to be decided)! I can definitely help out with (b) and (c).
Heck, we could even try brewing some mate kombucha...
Patrik
hi everyone,
you are once again invited to come do things with the awesome sudo kids
tuesday from 6ish to 8:30ish. want to do a group activity? teach really
brilliant kids something awesome? build a thing with them? help them build
a thing? we've done calligraphy, clay, mate-brewing, piano, radio, and
more. kids have expressed an interest in 3d printing and making videos. if
you want to do either of those things with us (whether tomorrow or sometime
in the future), or have an idea for another thing you'd like to do, be in
touch!
additionally, ray and i have started working on concrete goals and desired
outcomes for the sudo kids program. we are doing this because a hackerspace
without kids is like a diy electronics project without a blinky light -
extremely sad. kids are natural hackers and if our role is to provide the
physical and community infrastructure to encourage people to keep building
and making and learning and exploring things forever, then kids are
naturally part of that equation :) additionally, having activities for kids
is a proven strategy to expanding our community. yes, we are operating from
the principle that if you hook a kid on a thing, that you will eventually
have an opportunity to speak with their parent. the good news is that we
are not selling stuff but selling the idea of making stuff and being in a
community of makers. finally, if you've never done stuff with kids before,
you may find the experience to be really different than what you'd expect
(i know i have). i continue to be extremely impressed and more or less
constantly verklempt at the insight and intelligence of the children we
work with.
so, if you want to help coordinate activities and be a part of the cool
sudo kids organizing/future direction/expanding the program crew, (or are
just interested in learning more about what "helping coordinate sudo kids"
involves - it's not a lot), be in touch via email or just come on a tuesday
night.

Approval for citywide surveillance now scheduled for July 30.
> The Domain Awareness Center began as a federal grant for port security, but has expanded to include more of Oakland.
>
> The approval of $2 million in federal funding for a citywide surveillance center in Oakland was postponed to July 30 as opposition to the controversial proposal slowly gains public awareness and criticism.
>
> The agenda item first presented in an Oakland City Council Public Safety Committee received little vetting by the some council members when it was heard July 9. It also attracted no public comment that night. However, in the past week the issue has gathered energy as some city advocates question the proposal, they say, may further infringe on their privacy, in addition, to it lacking any guidelines for its use and possible expansion.
>
> At Tuesday’s Oakland City Council meeting, the director of the city’s emergency services, Renee Domingo, said no standard operating procedures currently exist for how the system known as the Domain Awareness Center (DAC) will be employed, if approved by the council. In addition, the city and port are in the process of studying various public records and data retention requirements in relation to the DAC, said Domingo. Later, she added there is doubt whether the DAC will function as a center for data storage since the feeds it will pull in already come from sources with their own retention rules.
>
> The DAC was first approved by the City Council in July 2010 following the allocation of federal stimulus dollars for security at the Port of Oakland. The $2 million outlay before the council this month represents phase two of the program which, according to a city staff report, has ballooned from covering the port to other parts of the city, including street cameras and various other locations, including schools and the Coliseum. Approval would also allow the city and port to seek out other agencies to provide additional video feeds to the DAC, including the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Caltrans, among others. During the Public Safety Committee meeting last week, staff also indicated plans to partner with other statewide and federal authorities for inclusion in Oakland’s DAC.
>
> Privacy advocates say the DAC’s ability to become a clearinghouse for numerous video feeds from a panoply of government agencies, along with a torrent of data sources, including information and statistics from law enforcement, sets a dangerous precedent in a city beset with a police department, which in the past, has routinely infringed on citizen rights and has paid millions in settlements for their actions.
>
> “[There are] huge opportunities for abuse here, too,” Oakland resident Joshua Daniels said Tuesday night. “We’re talking about giving a surveillance system for the entire city over to, perhaps, the most abusive police force in the country.”
>
> Gwen Winter, another Oakland resident speaking during public comment said, “This has nothing to do with crime. This has nothing to do with terrorism. What you want to do is watch what all the people are doing so they won’t organize.”
>
> Following revelations brought on by Edward Snowden over the federal government’s ability to spy on Americans, Sandy Sanders urged for the council to maintain a delineation between the city’s data and other agencies. “Our data is our data and your data is your data and those should be separate. Do your job in government and protect us.”
>
> A few public speakers took fault with Councilman Dan Kalb’s comments in committee last week when he concluded his statements on the DAC by saying, “sounds good to me.” In response to the public outcry Tuesday night, Kalb said, “This is not a fault or a criticism, but I’ll only say, I wish all the people who were here today were at the public safety committee a week ago. It would have been more helpful.”
>
> The City Council may have been caught flat-footed by the amount of criticism against the DAC Tuesday night. Councilman Larry Reid moved to delay the item to July 30. Councilmember Lynette Gibson McElhaney, who sits on the Public Safety Committee, agreed. Reid asked staff for additional research on the proposal before adding, “Given that we can’t even get our freaking phones working for our police officer…and now we want to add this additional technology when there’s only two to three years for maintenance?” He also criticized the public safety committee for not properly vetting the item.
>
> Councilmember Desley Brooks said the item should have never been placed on Tuesday’s consent calendar. “It was only supposed to go on the consent calendar if it wasn’t controversial and clearly there are people who have a different opinion.

hi everyone,
you may have heard of "today i learned," our wildly successful
co-learning-teaching one-off workshops that take place every saturday:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Today_I_Learned
since the launch of TIL in January we've held over 20 workshops on topics
that range from jewelry-making to today's statistics with doodles. many
thanks to everyone who has facilitated a workshop, attended a workshop,
suggested a workshop, promoted a workshop, and workshopped a workshop.
i've mostly been taking the lead on keeping the schedule filled up,
encouraging people to do sessions, and promoting the TILs, but i need help!
we are not doing as well as we could be on really fulfilling the potential
of the TILs. unfortunately i don't have the time to really give this
project the love it deserves.
here are some of the tasks that we need help with to really have the TILs
fulfill the original intended function: providing an easy way for new
people to show up and participate in sudo room (while also sharing our
knowledge with each other and improve our teaching techniques):
- keeping the schedule filled up & encouraging sudoers and others to
facilitate sessions
- ideally we'd have at least a month ahead booked up so that we can
prepare detailed schedules for distribution to local schools,
after school
clubs, etc.
- promoting events
- at the moment, we barely provide a week's notice for upcoming TILs.
this is not enough lead time and as a result, they are often not as well
attended as they could be.
- promotions currently really only happen to channels that are likely
to reach people who already know about us: via email lists, twitter, fb,
and our blog. creativity in promotion (with different kinds of
promotional
activities for different TILs)
- currently, i mainly promote the events with little participation on
the part of the facilitator or larger sudo community. if we'd like to
distribute responsibility for the promotion, it would be helpful
to have a
"how to promote your workshop" guide and provide other mechanisms to help
make it easier to promote (blog post templates, flyer templates, etc.)
- documentation
- we should have been taking video of every workshop and putting it
online. we have not done this. this would be a huge improvement.
who's in? XD

hi everyone,
a few of us have been working on getting the radio up and running with lots
of great programming all the time. we need help!
do you want to be a part of coordinating the radio? here are the kinds of
things that need to be done:
- recruiting dj's
- training dj's
- coordinating scheduling
let's spread the work around so that we can give the radio the love it
deserves!

Dear All,
Please feel free to sign up for the free Bioinformatics class that Ron will
be running at Sudo room on the 28th of July!
http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/129899352/
The intersection of biology and computer science is showing tremendous
potential. Literally thousands of data sources great and small are publicly
available now. Come and enjoy a low key introduction to all the ‘omes’ –
genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, methylomes, metabolomes, etc. We’ll
play with some of the more useful data sources, tools and biological
pathways. No biology training is necessary – the talk will be accessible to
anyone.
Programming skills are useful, but not necessary. Tools: If you have a
laptop, please bring it. We will try to look at data in the class and
preview a couple of tools. Cygwin on windows machines, OsX or linux are
useful here, but we can go over these at the time if needed. We will be
open to designing a project for anyone who wants to go deeper and get more
experience with Bioinformatics.
Ron Shigeta PhD Trained in biophysics and structural biology has been doing
bioinformatics for 12 years in bay area biotech. My current interests are
pharma pipeline tools, machine learning, and synthetic biology.
All the best,
Ryan

Hi Folks,
Last night went pretty well overall despite not getting my beer machine operational due to disappointing answers to such questions as "how many power cords into power strips into power cords can I connect?" and the ever popular "will the plumbing leak where you least expect it?" We did have some newbies there working on a robotics project for a school assignment and let me tell you, there's something about the smell of burning servos that just can't be beat. Overall their objective is to use machine vision as a feedback for actuators, seems pretty cool. Rabbit and I put together some power hardware to map 4D visualizations to some addressable LED strips for a burning man project. We did a little probing of the door raspi but couldn't get a rise out of the relevant GPIO pin so I defer to the original system designers, but volunteer to fabricate a plug-in circuit board to streamline the component layout. Also got some soldering assistance from one of the sudo kids who gravitated toward the table full of wires.
This final point lead me to an idea - I'd like to incorporate a sudokids robotics event once a month. Open to any and all ideas as to how this would play out, but at minimum we could have them build and compete remote controlled rovers, in both co-op and free for all modes of course. Let me know if you have any ideas for kid-friendly microcontroller projects. I'd like to develop this idea and start mid-september.
Happy Hacking,

hey sudoers,
if you have done a TIL, workshop, or had any other colearning experiences
(if you've learned something from someone at sudo room, grats! you have had
a colearning experience) and are interested in learning about how other
people approach workshops in order to improve your experience, i am
considering signing up for the below. anyone else interested?

Invitation to sign up for a course on collaborative workshops
I’m helping to run a course on delivering workshop which is going to be
hosted on p2pu.org as part of the School of Open- I’ve designed some
badges and we are due to start sign up on the 22nd of July. While I like
to think that we have added our own special touch, most materials have
been gathered from existing sources. The one thing they all have in
common is that they are all published under open licences.
The main sources have their own excellent websites so if you want to go
straight to the source then check them out here;
http://www.seedsforchange.org.uk/http://aspirationtech.org/http://rhizomenetwork.wordpress.com/
Would you like to be a part of this course? Maybe you already know a bit
about delivering workshops and would like to share your experiences?
Maybe you are new to workshops and facilitation? Perhaps you can join
this course with some of your colleagues as a way of learning together?
One of the reasons that I am helping to run this course is to use it as
a way of doing some professional development. I’ve spend some time
working with partners from Creative Commons and the P2PU.org to research
and pull together some of what we feel are the best introductory
materials and techniques on delivering collaborative and interactive
workshops.
This course is a way of bringing existing materials to a new audience on
new platforms (p2pu.org and FLOSS Manuals). Also by remixing them into
an online course it allows people to share their experiences while they
work through the materials and suggestions for planning a workshop.
We are adding Open Badges into the mix too. We are keeping it simple. If
you plan a workshop you can submit it for peer review to get a badge.
And if you deliver a workshop and take photos and write up your
learning, well that deserves a badge too.
Though online discussion via comments, and via live group chat sessions
we hope to build a community of people who will plan and then ideally
deliver a workshop with peer support from other course participants.
If you are new to delivering workshops then this is a great opportunity
to learn from a great group of trainers some of whom have some fantastic
experiences to share.
On the other hand, this course is a perfect chance for existing trainers
to experiment with this online learning tool and community. You can dip
a toe in the water while working with familiar subject matter.
To sign up visit the course home page, click on Start Course on the left
of the column. You will need to sign up for p2pu.org.
If you have any questions you can find me on @mickfuzz on twitter or
email me on – mickfuzz at clearerchannel.org

* this doesn't include 2 checks that i need to deposit. additionally,
jenny, is there anything that needs to be transferred from the wepay or
from the box in sudo?
Hey all,
I talked to Danny O'Brien (Noisebridge's financial functionary)
yesterday about the sudoroom legal status. I know this has been an
ongoing discussion so I'm going to summarize the options we've already
looked into and present the new information Danny has brought to my
attention.
*Why do we need a legal status?*
Over the past few months we've found various challenges to our normal
operations since we don't have a legal status. We aren't able to sign
up for services like Stripe without having a federal tax id. In
addition, since we are formally under one person's name, he is liable if
anything happens at sudoroom. Also, we aren't able to sign up for most
banks -- only the Community Bank of the Bay will actually give us a bank
account with our status as a DBA. And as we've seen, Community Bank of
the Bay is not the most web-savvy organization, and so it's hard for us
to actually check our balances.
*What we've looked at*
Our eventual goal has been to get 501(c)3 status for sudoroom. This is
a status that would allow us to accept tax-deductible donations and be
incorporated formally as a nonprofit. A lot of Hacker Spaces go this
route, and it seems like a reasonable long-term goal. One of the
problems we've been warned of is that it takes a long time to actually
be granted 501(c)3 status - upwards of 2 years, which can as I
understand be expedited to 10 months.
Because of this delay, we've looked into some other options -- namely
being umbrella'd under another organization's 501(c)3 status. This
would involve 10% of our revenue going to said umbrella organization to
cover costs of the books. I've been in contact with Danny at
Noisebridge and Jenny has been in contact with (Steve?) at the School
Factory and discussing if this is a possibility. It is certainly one
way to go, but as for Noisebridge they've only umbrella'd Noisetor, and
they didn't need a separate account for that.
*What I've learned recently*
Danny mentioned that his partner is looking into nonprofit status for a
new feminist hacker space in SF, and has investigated these options as
well as others. In order to have a certain degree of autonomy, it is
probably in our interests to actually not go the umbrella route and
pursue separate legal status altogether. He also mentioned that there's
no reason why we couldn't incorporate as an LLC or other corporate
status before pursuing 501c3 status, and that even if it takes a number
of years to be granted non-profit status we can transition from an LLC
without much of a problem. There's no real disadvantage to having LLC
status in the meantime, as I understand it. The main advantage of
nonprofit status is tax deduction, but that is usually superseded on
most peoples taxes by the standard deduction. The main place where it
does make a difference is when employers do matching donations for their
employees, then it can make a difference.
*The plan*
It makes sense to me to pursue the options that would resolve our
short-term problems without impeding the path to our long-term goals.
It seems to me reasonable as a short-term goal to register as an LLC
(Jenny tells me this can be done in an afternoon and with $50 with a
drive to Sacramento), and as a longer term goal actually pursuing
nonprofit, 501c3 status.
*Disclaimer*
There may be caveats to this plan and I'm not a lawyer.
Bill
Wow! I'm pretty impressed that someone walked the plank and took financial
risk to get SudoRoom going. That's a lot of trust ... especially for things
as tumultuous and socially wacky as non heirarchical collectives.
first penguins, you are honored!
As documented on the wiki, I'm going to teach statistics through doodles.
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Today_I_Learned#July_20:_Statistics_through_doodl…
With the help of some doodles on paper (or possibly the floor),
I'll will explain the purpose and meaning of various measures of the
relationships between different variables (specifically covariance,
variance, correlation and least-squares regression).
This class assumes literally no knowledge of math, not even basic
arithmetic. But I'll try to skip things that people already know
as not to bore everyone.
For the symbolically inclined, I can relate the doodles to the symbols
you might have seen in an introductory statistics course.
I've done this a few times, so I have enough of a mental script that
I'd like to video it and put it on the website. I'll bring a camera.
It would be awesome if someone could bring a tripod or if someone
held my camera for part of the session. Or we could make a
tripod-alternative out of some wood, a small tripod from the closet
and some duct tape.

There's a hackathon happening in Oakland to build tools that are helpful to
transgender people
Apply by August 2
Happens on Sept 13-15
http://transhack.org/
"WHY A HACKATHON FOCUSED ON THE TRANS COMMUNITY?
Research shows that transgender people are unemployed at 2x the national
rate–4x for transgender people of color; have incomes of less than $10,00 a
year; experience homelessness at 2x the rate of non-trans people; and
suffer overwhelming discrimination when it comes to accessing adequate
healthcare and legal services. This problem not only affects transgender
adults but trans and gender nonconforming youth as well. A necessary step
in addressing anti-transgender bias is to create technology that socially
empowers transgender individuals. Imagine if there existed a mobile phone
app that helps individuals find trans friendly doctors or an app that
profiles safe space job opportunities for trans people across the country?
Trans*H4CK is a space in which to turn these possibilities into reality."

*UC Berkeley School of Information launches Master of Information and Data
Science (MIDS) degree*
Dear Alumni and Friends of the I School,
I am thrilled to share the news that the School of Information is launching
a Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) degree with the first
cohort of students starting in January 2014. This will be the country’s
first fully online Master of Information and Data Science
(MIDS)<http://my.berkeley.edu/site/R?i=jgDIsKHXfN45z35djKXw-Q>program.
The I School faculty developed this new degree in response to the rapidly
growing need for well-trained professionals who can organize, analyze, and
interpret the deluge of often messy and unorganized data now available from
the web, sensor networks, mobile devices, and elsewhere — often referred to
as “big data.”
The MIDS is a rigorous 27-unit graduate degree aimed at the working
professional. It will combine live, face-to-face classes with interactive,
online course work that can be accessed from anywhere. While the coursework
will be entirely online, all students will also participate in a one-week
immersion in Berkeley that allows them to meet one another and the faculty
as well as to interact with leading data science professionals from the San
Francisco Bay Area.
The program will provide hands-on experience with the diverse tools and
methods for exploring and finding patterns in complicated, real-world data,
and for communicating the findings with decision makers. Just like all
other degree programs at the School of Information, I School faculty will
teach in the program alongside experienced professionals.

Hi Julio,****

Sorry for the long delay.****

After going out there a couple of times, I concluded that the best location
for racks was on 22nd St. Sites for four racks (accommodating a total of 8
bikes) were marked with white dots. In late May, we mailed the ground floor
businesses and the property owner (per our usual process) and didn’t
receive any comments. (We are also adding two more racks across the street
in front of the Bruner’s Building.)****
** **
The racks were added to a work order submitted to the Public Works crews
who install them on June 7. There is currently quite a back log, so I
apologize again for the delay. I can’t tell you when they will be installed
L--it’s out of my control.****
** **
The reason I opted against the Broadway location was because of the white
zone/loading-unloading in front of the Sound Room and because removing and
replacing the two U-racks there was a bit messy because the sidewalk is in
such poor condition.****

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your patience,****

Hi Jennifer,****

I was wondering what the status was of the bike racks on the SW corner of
22nd and Broadway. I can't find an email about this, but I believe that we
talked and agreed that the best solution was to remove the existing racks
there, and replace them with multiple perpendicular racks. I thought you
said it would take 3 months, but I'm pretty sure nothing has happened yet,
so I wanted to ask and make sure it was still on your radar. Let me know
if I need to do anything else.****

What about simply adding a bunch of sidewalk racks?****

No need to submit a request online. And I manage the CityRacks program
which includes the bike corrals. (More info on those at

Hi Jennifer,****
****
We talked earlier about putting a bike rack on the sidewalk in front of our
house. For the moment, those plans are on hold.****
****
However, I was wondering if the CityRacks Program would be able to put some
bike racks on the Southwest corner of Broadway at 22nd Street (on the
Broadway side). This is a commercial area and, recently, hosts a new
hackerspace called SudoRoom on the second floor of the building, where many
members use their bicycles to get there, but are forced to bring the bikes
upstairs due to the lack of safety and visibility below. This corner would
be a great location to have a pool of bike racks similar to what is in
front of the New Parkway theater on 474 24th Street. I'm not sure if those
bike racks were put up under the CityRacks program, but wanted to explore
what was possible around Broadway and 22nd. There is plenty of room, but I
don't know what kind of process we'd have to go through.****
****
Let me know if I should just submit a CityRacks request on the website.****
****
Thanks in advance for any guidance you are able to provide.****

Hello Julio,
First, please accept my apology for responding so late to this request.
Second, the CityRacks program installs racks in commercial areas only, not
residential areas. If the property owner wishes to install sidewalk bike
racks they can; the process is outlined here:
http://www2.oaklandnet.com/Government/o/PWA/o/EC/s/BicycleandPedestrianProg…
.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for your interest in
bicycling in Oakland!

additional_info: We work from home and only use our bikes for
transportation. Rather than have to lock up our bikes inside the house each
time we come in and out, we would like to have a rack outside the house so
we could quickly lock up during the day. Friends and other neighbors would
also be able to use the racks, since many also use bikes predominantly.

Put simply, everything is working except the outer door is not
actually buzzing opening when it says it does. It appears a wire came
loose between the raspi and the door buzzer. We're trying to figure
out the right way to put it back.
Unrelatedly, our internet connection is being saturated this afternoon
by UDP packets which look suspiciously like either a DDoS or (more
likely) somebody was torrenting earlier. The high network load has
made door.sudoroom.org appear down, but it still works.
take the poll!

hi everyone,
the elevator was emergency locked again this morning. it is definitely a
problem to have this continue to be an issue, but we are actively working
on a solution (ie, coordinating with laurie and george to ensure that we're
on the same page regarding the elevator access control system that we
installed last week & the subsequent lack of a need to manually lock the
elevator).
thank you to everyone for their patience as we resolve these issues and
thanks to everyone who's a part of the ad hoc phone tree that's been
resolving the immediate access problem whenever it arises :) you guys are
awesome!
