REMINDER: Next meeting this Sunday at 4p! Screenwriters' meetup at 5p!
Let's all decide upon a name for the new list!!
Major props to Eddan for taking notes!
Reviving hackerspace passports out of SR has been a dream of mine! @Eddie:
Would you be down to do a Today I Learned on book binding? Maybe we could
incorporate the passports into a workshop as one of the projects people
could chose to work on?
I think we don't have to stop at the figure of a bear, though it would
serve nostalgia well. Is this turning into a conversation on building Sudo
Room's own multi-functional robot akin to Noisebridge's MC Hawking? For
reference: https://www.noisebridge.net/wiki/Noise-Bot
Yay,

Ugh I called it a router, when I meant modem. MODEM!
MOOOODEEEEEM
Please check out this video. I don't know if SR has the facilities and
skills to make and sell these "drops," but as the video shows, they have
some compelling attributes: They're inexpensive, easy to make, and
consumable, which gives them a financial "evergreen" trait. Not only that,
but there's plenty of silicon dioxide on the planet.

what i love about sudoroom is that we don't need to have hackathons that
often, people here are hacking 24-7. We don't need go to a big hackathon
event run by big companies or by non profits because we do this seven days
a week. it's in our blood.
Hi All,
I'm teaching a class on June 15. Feel free to cross post to Public School,
Noisebridge, etc..

Before "White Hat" hackers and "Black Hat" hackers there were "Ethical
Hackers". These groups and individuals may not have always stayed within
the confines of the law, but followed a well defined ethic. This is the
story of MIT pranks, the golden age of the BBS, The Great Hacker War, Steve
Jackson Games vs. The US Secret Service, Old school hacking tech ( Blue
Boxing, Red Boxing, War Dialing, etc ), New Hack City and the rise of the
Cult of The Dead Cow, Free Kevin!, Hacktivismo, and more...
The Hacker Manifesto
by
+++The Mentor+++
Written January 8, 1986
Another one got caught today, it's all over the papers. "Teenager Arrested
in Computer Crime Scandal", "Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering"...
Damn kids. They're all alike.
But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950's technobrain, ever
take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder what made
him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him?
I am a hacker, enter my world...
Mine is a world that begins with school... I'm smarter than most of the
other kids, this crap they teach us bores me...
Damn underachiever. They're all alike.
I'm in junior high or high school. I've listened to teachers explain for
the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. "No, Ms.
Smith, I didn't show my work. I did it in my head..."
Damn kid. Probably copied it. They're all alike.
I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this is cool.
It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it's because I screwed it
up. Not because it doesn't like me... Or feels threatened by me.. Or thinks
I'm a smart ass.. Or doesn't like teaching and shouldn't be here...
Damn kid. All he does is play games. They're all alike.
And then it happened... a door opened to a world... rushing through the
phone line like heroin through an addict's veins, an electronic pulse is
sent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought... a board
is found. "This is it... this is where I belong..." I know everyone here...
even if I've never met them, never talked to them, may never hear from them
again... I know you all...
Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They're all alike...
You bet your ass we're all alike... we've been spoon-fed baby food at
school when we hungered for steak... the bits of meat that you did let slip
through were pre-chewed and tasteless. We've been dominated by sadists, or
ignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us
willing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.
This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the
beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without
paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering
gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us
criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist
without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you
call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder,
cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet
we're the criminals.
Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of
judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My
crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me
for.
I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but
you can't stop us all... after all, we're all alike.

Last week I found out Instructables is running a sponsorship program, if a
hackerspace writes a guide with 10 instructables, they'll grant a piece of
equipment:
* CarveWright version C
* Up! 3D Printer
* Juki TL-2010Q Long Arm Sewing and Quilting Machine
* Electronics package (Oscilloscope + shop supply)
* A/V package ( DLP Projector, photo lights & setup)
Details: http://www.instructables.com/sponsorship/
Does anyone have an interest in trying to do this? I have 3 or 4 LED
projects I could write up. I'll try to make it to LED night / the meeting
tonight if folks want to talk about it!

Hey all,
There is a door keypad outside.... it doesn't work, needs debugging. I
don't have the energy to do it tonight and I won't be around tomorrow.
Please let me know if you are interested to helping with the final steps of

hi all,
radio room is clean, spiffy, and ready to use. for real this time.
i am ready to help any of you or small groups of you (however many will fit
in the studio) learn how to share audio on the livestream.
i've also written some documentation that should ideally help anyone get
started livestreaming on their own and provide them with detailed
instructions for troubleshooting the most common problems encountered:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Sudo_Radio
next step is to keep doing trainings until all of you are happy with your
competence levels and to start scheduling shows. we're currently using this
sadly neglected spreadsheet to do show scheduling (
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApmrUsz7z5DodDVaZnJ4TW1ndC1jd1…)
but alternative scheduling ideas are welcome.
- marina
ps - you may have noticed that i have only spoken about livestreaming thus
far and have not mentioned recording or producing. this is because for now,
we've had more interest in livestreaming than in doing audio production, so
i've been focusing on getting that ready for people to use, but the next
step is production...and anyway, audacity (audio recording and production
software) is installed on the studio computer, so you are welcome to futz
with it to your heart's content.
pps - the documentation needs a bunch of images and formatting cleanup. i
am working on this.
hi all,
for the last few weeks we've been working on a list of potentially
money-making projects that people are already working on or are interested
in starting to work on.
the next step is for you to add your name to any project that you are
already working on or interested in working on:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Funding_Ideas
please also add any projects that you're working on that are not already on
the list.
finally, it is now may 27th and i would like to kindly remind you to pay

http://roboheart.com/2012/02/12/japanese-vs-american-hero-archetypes/
No this isn’t about who would win in a fight between Superman and Goku.
Specifically this is about a particular mainstream Japanese hero character
I see over and over again in Shonen action based Anime / Manga and how it
compares to mainstream American super heroes. Of course I don’t mean to say
there aren’t characters on both sides that break the mold, only that the
type I describe seems interestingly prevalent in modern mainstream media.
*Growth Mindset*
*For me, the biggest difference is that Japanese super powers are based
around a growth mindset. The hero must train hard to unlock his hidden
potential.* Even if he is the chosen one of some kind or come from another
planet, it doesn’t come for free, it takes hard work. Most American super
heroes were born with their powers or gained it all at once through some
happenstance beyond their control. They will usually go through an awkward
period of learning how their powers work, but it will be more about
discovery than training.
The most obvious direct explanation for this difference is the cultural
importance of martial arts in Japan and other Asian countries, as well as a
more strict work ethic. Most of the super powers imagined are centered
around martial arts and notion of building Chi. Many Anime have their own
names for this force. Chakara, Haki, Nen, Raetsu or Spirit Force, just to
name a few. These forces are brought out through training and will power.
Characters are at their most powerful when put in desperate situations and
they are forced into a fit of rage, protecting the ones they love. I might
suggest that American superpowers are looked at like property, or even like
winning the lottery. Japanese powers are more like the inextricable essence
of a person, perhaps not unlike a Samurai referring to his sword as an
extension of his soul.
*Magic VS Science*
Japanese powers seem more often based in magic, the powerful life force
inside us all. That or at least the laws of the universe are different from
our own. For example, “Full Metal Alchemist” takes place in a world where
alchemy really works. American powers are way more often science related,
and rooted in our own universe, or at least a universe that is very similar
to our own. Unfortunately those powers are often based on unrealistically
huge breakthroughs and severe mishaps, since that’s the only way to go from
the ordinary world to something so amazing. Also the scientific
explanations are usually so flimsy they may as well be magic. The fact that
these Manga superheroes likely exist in an alternate world yet American
ones are grounded in this one, is interesting to me. I wonder if this means
that Manga superpower stories are a deeper form of escapism. Even if
American heroes take part in a world unknown to us, it usually is supposed
to exist in parallel, somewhere under our noses, hidden from the notice of
us ordinary people.
*Dynamic Power Ups*
The ability to power up when they need to defeat a stronger opponent isn’t
in and of itself isn’t unique, but some Japanese characters take this to a
whole new level. Some even quantify their power ups by calling them gears
or levels. The prime example is Dragon Ball Z. The idea that you can turn
these various states of power at will like shifting gears on a car isn’t
something I can ever remember seeing in an American character, with the
exception of when a character somehow borrows or steals another characters
powers for a particular fight.
*Intuition*
This Japanese hero is not very bright, but somehow always does the right
thing when it matters. They are ruled by powerful and accurate intuition.
As in the way of the Samurai, all decisions are made in the space of seven
breaths, or much less. Because of this their decisions sometimes seem rash
to those around them, though over time people grow to have faith in them.
American heroes will often struggle with the right thing to do. Also, the
main hero in Manga always seems to have simple powers, simple attacks,
compared to the other characters in that world anyway. He may sometimes use
them in a clever way, it is much more likely for the villain to have
complicated or tricky powers. I think it’s somehow related to honor, that
simple powers befit an honest hero.
*Care Free Attitude*
This is related to their intuition I think. These Manga heroes tend not to
spend a lot of time worrying, and may even seem careless. They have been
know to randomly fall asleep at inopportune moments, and accidentally say
the wrong thing at the wrong time. They have an innocence about them. After
all they usually are teenagers. This quality may also be related with the
way of the Samurai, treating matters of grate importance lightly and small
matters with the utmost seriousness.
*Strength From Friendship*
Unlike a lot of American heroes, they are not usually tormented loners,
forbidden from personal relationships. Often their friends and family have
lesser powers themselves. They focus very heavily on being able to protect
their loved ones, but often have faith in them to take care of themselves.
American superheroes always seem to be carrying around a grate weight on
their shoulders, like their power is burden. Anime / Manga characters
usually seem to treasure their strength, their ability to protect people.
For them, the ones they love ARE their strength, instead of their weakness.
They often reach a new level of power up through the rage of a loved one
being threatened or hurt. The American superhero is surrounded by ordinary
humans. They are infinitely more capable than everyone around them, so they
are infinitely more responsible and isolated. It also makes me wonder if
the American mindset is that it’s only worth having power if it is far far
greater power than anyone else. The Japanese hero is surrounded by other
super powered people. They don’t start at the top. There are always more
powerful people who drive them to advance and become the best.
*Enormous Appetite*
I really have no Idea about this one, but quite a few of these Manga heroes
seem to be able to eat an absurd amount of food. I guess they need the
energy to fuel all those power ups. The most extreme examples of this are
Dragon Ball Z, One Piece, and more recently Toriko, which is largely based
around eating.
*Purity
*This isn’t necessarily a difference, but the Manga heroes seem to be very
pure hearted and noble even if they seem brash on the outside. Plenty of
American Supers are noble, but there seems to be slight distinction in my
mind. American heroes are either totally super noble like Superman or
Captain America, or they have some kind of character flaw that they must
overcome to rise to the heroes call. Their Japanese counterparts flaws
aren’t usually flaws at all. They don’t get in the way of them being a
hero, they are part of their personality and may actually make them better
at what they do. They don’t seem to be in conflict with themselves. Their
apparent character flaws are a product of their innocence instead of their
corruption or weakness. Again this may have a lot to do with their
relatively young age.**
I can’t really say what this all adds up to, or even why I felt compelled
to TRY and quantify it, only that I think it is interesting to see the
kinds of fictional characters that our very different cultures idolize. I
enjoy superheroes on both sides of this analysis, but I find that they
access different feelings. I think the Manga hero archetype is a more
joyful and passionate, where as the American one is more about wish
fulfillment, with a bit of “Careful what you wish for.” thrown in.**
*Update:* Just responding to some comments on
reddit<http://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/pnps8/japanese_vs_american_hero_arch…>that
there should be more specific American comics references. I admit it
is a bit one sided in that regard, but I kind of figured if you’re reading
this in English you probably know more than you care too already about
popular American superheroes from the many Hollywood movies of late. Maybe
that was a mistake. This wasn’t supposed to be an unbiased essay, just some
observations I made that were interesting to me. I do have more interest in
Anime in recent years, but I’m definitely not trying to convince anyone of
anything. I don’t have an agenda, I don’t think. I’m not trying to bend
facts to suite an argument, however I will fully concede to the possibility
that I may be seeing patterns where there are none, or looking too deeply
in too narrow a spot. Humans are particularly good at this in general. In
the end I’m just surprised people actually wanted more information on this.
I always assume people will find these posts long winded. Anyway, criticism
taken.
*Update 2:* Okay, I don’t think I have the patience to expand this into a
full essay with citations equally on both sides. I did adjust a few minor
phrases to be a BIT more specific and disclaimatory, if that is even a
word. So I will just list below the particular hero characters I was
referencing between the lines. Apply what you know, maybe that will clear
this up a little. Not every point I TRY to make applies entirely to each
character, but hopefully they hold generally true. Generalizations
definitely aren’t the only thing important in an analysis, but at least
initially, they can be the only way to see a pattern. Of course I know they
can also be used for evil. With great generalization come great
responsibility. Now, I don’t want to think about this ever again.
* Japan*
Goku – DBZ, obviously, really seems like the precursor to the next 5.
Monkey D Luffy – One Piece
Natsu – Fairy Tail
Gon – HunterXHunter
Naruto, Shippudden or otherwise
Toriko
Elric Brothers – Full Metal Alchemist, mainly just to exemplify an
alternate world with different rules. Not as many similarities to the
others.
*USA*
Superman
Spiderman
Ironman
Captain America
Thor
Green Lantern
Batman, probably the most growth mindset oriented of the group
Hi,
Sudoroomer could you help me out? I'm looking for gift boxes for a project.
they can be about the size of a book ideally
- something thta can fit several items and is at least 3-5 inches high on
the z axis
- not looking for a small jewelry box
- this should be able to fit a magazine (8.5x11"), a t-shirt and a few
other items
If you have extra boxes please let me know!
Trying to install an open source media streaming solution on my Ubuntu. I
found vlc but wondering about others' preferences.
Eventually thinking of having one on a beaglebone black if thats possible.

Hey Wolfy, I'm still a little confused about this. The instructions
you gave are for the router, but what about the firewall? They're
configured in two different places, right?
It seems like there are a bunch of different machines. I'll try to
write up MY understanding.
Bonded phone lines come out of the wall, into the Sonic.net router
Sonic.net router is connected by ethernet to:
Horchata, firewall, in the closet, IP 192.168.1.1, connected by ethernet to:
D-Link Gigabit Switch, on shelf above closet, with many things
plugged into its ethernet ports, including:
Port 1: Horchata
Port 4: Cisco AP
Other ports: Tamale, radio room, random places
The Cisco AP has IP 192.168.1.49 and appears to be running dd-wrt,
but nobody knows the password.
Which of these machines is "the router"? The thing that needs the Java
app to access? Is it Horchata? Are the router and firewall the same
machine?
Sorry for being verbose, I just want to be very clear before changing
anything. Thanks!
hi all,
In late May 2013, we find ourselves with a number of hacks necessary to
improve ACCESS to & functioning of the space. On Sunday 5/25/13, starting
at 11:45AM and running all day long (until the wee hours of Memorial Day
Monday with a potential midnight tofu bbq), we will be HACKING THE ROOM.
we have hacks in a number of categories: hardware, software, and admin. in
order to help people collaborate on the appropriate categories at the
appropriate times, please reply to this thread or add your name to the list
of attendees <https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Hack_The_Room> with the category
that you'd like to work on and when you'll be available (if you'll only be
available during certain parts of the day, sharing your availability will
help coordinate everyone who wants to work on hardware for ex.)
here's the current list of necessary hacks (please add to/modify this list
at https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Hack_The_Room):
Hardware Hacking:
- Getting a raspi attached to the sudo <=> (common space) door.
- Installing a circuit on both doors that will be able to send signals
to their respective raspi's.
- Move shit and reorganize space.
Software Hacking:
- Getting the mouse buzzer working
- Creating an API for the door open/closed states
- Whipping up some code for the homepage to interface with the API
Administrative:
- Getting a comprehensive membership list
- prerequisite: hack on different configurations of membership &
access (how do we determine who gets personal access to the space, etc.)?
...See the "member benefits" section of the articles of
association<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Articles_of_Association#Section_2.3_Benefits>for
details.
- (roadblock: Tommy needs access to the bank acct to get a list of
dues paying members, no?)
- additional thoughts: what else is needed to improve membership
management?
- Improving finance management
- Need to determine areas for improvement in the current finance
tracking/management system and areas where responsibility can be shared,
etc.
- Review clarifications required with landlords for space.
- Meeting format
- Outreach strategy
- Encouraging regular payment of dues from members
- Updating https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Door_Access
also, we'll need food! ^_^

Hello good morning !
Started my first sudoroom hack in downtown sacramento the cartoon below that can be letter pressed or silkscreen printed and eventually given as an intro card to what we are about for donations
Maybe we could even print this on the back of circuit boards for future electronics kits-- yes we can !!!
My butt hurts from biking all over sacramento -- met a cool food activist bike shop edible pedals that does food delivery from farms by bike. We need to descend en masse on sacramento in the party bus and learn from all the rad people here!

Arse Elektronika 2013 / Call for Submissions
ID/ENTITY
monochrom's festival on sex and tech and id/entities.
October 3-6, 2013 in San Francisco.
Call for talks, performances, workshops, games, machines.
Deadline for submissions: July 15, 2013
----------------
Sex, technology, identity... big-ass sweeping themes for Arse Elektronika
2013.
Identity, but also identification. Technologies for the exploration of
identities. Technologies for the articulation and performance of
identities. Technologies for the enforcement of hegemonic identities.
Technologies for the verification of identities. For example: What about
the vast fencing-off of the old wild internet; the #nym-wars and the push
for "real names"?
We typically assume there is 'something' that takes and/or performs an
identity. What is this entity? Are awareness and consciousness strictly
limited to and made sense of in human experience alone? How is identity
understood and made sense of in terms of artificial intelligence? What
might transhuman, android, or cyborg identities consist of? What does
sexual desire mean to a dolphin?
We have technology-based identities. If we are to agree that agency is a
key factor in identity AND position technology as extension/manipulation of
agency, then is technology an identity in and of itself?
The Bay Area, famous as a place to "find yourself," also hosts vast
projects to organize and catalog the world's identities, whether they want
that or not. So, how does the Californian Ideology drive identity politics
and techno-sexuality?
Will apps like Bang With Friends and gadgets like Google Glass provide us
with the ultimate gonzo pornoverse? And why are services like LinkedIn
explicitly banning escorts from using the site to get clients?
What have been the social ramifications of Web 2.0, ten years on? By what
means have queer users of dating sites and social networks reframed or
otherwise hacked the systems surrounding them? What is the design history
of the drop-down gender menu- and its alternatives? How did Facebook's
inclusion of "in an open relationship" as a standard option for one's
relationship status affect youth mores? What has been the effect of
location-based hookup apps on the architecture of cruising? What are the
economics of niche dating sites, and how are they policed? What are the
ethical obligations surrounding the ability to algorithmically identify
those who are in the closet?
What technologies could ensure more flexible, fluid identities? What would
TSA protocols look like if they were designed from a queer perspective?
What does counter-surveillant fashion look like? How might we ensure the
right not to be found? (Should we?) Are there technologies for anonymity
that do not also afford stalking and harassment? Are there technologies for
transparency that do not also afford stalking and harassment?
If an identity requires recognition (either by the self or through the
Other), then is it ever possible to be "truly" or "identifiably" queer? Is
'queer identity' an oxymoron?
Former Tory chairman Lord Tebbit warns that legalizing gay marriage in the
UK "opens up the possibility of a lesbian queen giving birth to a future
monarch by artificial insemination." Interesting times for sex tech? Indeed!
What about a historic dimension? What were techno-sexual systems of
identity like in the past? What were the technologies of masked rituals?
What technologies drove the invention of privacy? How did the adoption of
fingerprinting change the regulation of prostitution in the early 20th
century? Besides hanky-flagging, what techniques/technologies were used to
signal 'deviant' interests? How was handwriting judged in the evaluation of
potential lovers? What is the techno-social history of the "secret admirer?"
How will technological progress change the way we see ourselves? What are
we without our iPhone and our beloved designer vibrator? Is the Marxian
commodity fetish actually entering the sphere of (what a wordplay!)
customization fetishism?
If orgasm patterns are unique and impossible to duplicate, could one's
sexual response be the ultimate biometric identifier? So, how worried
should we be about the spectre of sphincter-printing?
What about Big Data in a sexual context? Does size matter?
What about a decent ontological debate with your buttplug's AI?
Well... dear entities out there, with your proud Egos, Super-Egos and
Hyper-Egos! Never forget that there is an Id lurking round the corner! The
real Voight-Kampff test is not minding that it hurts!

Hey all,
Got word and confirmation from George today that he is dissatisfied with
our current access system--meaning we may no longer leave the door on 22nd
propped open whatsoever.
We need to (a) resolve our membership identification problem and (b) unify
and maintain our full access management solution and provide it to all
members (c) set up a telephone inside sudo room (d) expand access solutions
to the public school, possibly other tenants up to a fair exchange (e) keep
the hallway on 22nd to the elevator absolutely clear of all items.
Seriously, we are on thin ice and if we want to remain committed to public
access and thriving events, we need to get our shit together.
I personally cannot commit to resolving any of the above items--but I do
offer help and feedback to folks who can commit.

We did it! We accomplished 42! We hacked into the thing! The encryption is unencrypted! We changed it all! The chips are chipped like chocolate chip cookies ! We pushed the Packets and brought back the 1990s!!!
We got nerds to dance! We dined the public school! We hacked it! We hacked the planet!!
Yeah!

Hey all, I've put together a really simple desktop player that streams
audio from sudoradio.comhttps://sudoroom.org/wiki/SudoPod
The main feature of this app is that it has an integrated web server and
API, so you can run it on your desktop/laptop speakers and be able to
control it from any device with a browser on your network.
So if you have a Mac or Win machine and want to try it out, let me know, at
some point I'll probably do a iOS/Android version as well.
Also if anyone wants to setup this up on a desktop in sudo room it can be
remotely controlled by anyone on the network.

Greetings and Namaste,
I'm a horribly stiff man that war born without the ability to bend past a
20 degree angle. But lately I've been going a few days a week to
http://www.earthtribeyoga.com/ on Franklin and 20th (2 blocks from sudo).
Now its 25 degrees.
Earth Gribe is a cool space, they are essentially sudoers of the yoga world
- their classes and space are completely free, and run on member donations.
So if we wanted to we could just go to their classes together. Last Sunday,
I was the only person at the 5pm class, and got a private lesson.
I remembered how intimidating it is to go to Yoga when you don't feel
stretchy. So I asked the peeps if they would do *a private lesson for
sudoers*. They said yes if we got *5 people at $5/person*. We could do it
at their location or at sudo. and the time can be negotiated. Tor now I'm
going to propose Sunday at 6, but I'm so flexible.
So does anyone want to go with me to regular classes, or start a private
group?
notcofusingly,
Max
Hi everyone! I've been in the space a few times and told a couple of folks
about my mesh network ambitions. So now we're fundraising for CJDNS support
for Openwrt and Windows.
CJDNS is a mesh protocol flavor that emphasizes privacy through built-in
encryption and encourages trust and socializing through a trusted peer
model.
Hyperboria is a pretty large network of CJDNS networks ('mesh islands')
scattered across the globe and connected via Internet tunnel. Several
services are run such as HypeIRC, and some only accessible via Hyperboria.
Project Meshnet is an effort to research, develop, and deploy functional
mesh networks based on CJDNS and also expand Hyperboria to become the next
generation of the Internet.
Ambitious, yes. But very hard to do with the current state of support:
Linux and MacOS. If we can support Openwrt and Windows the doors can open
wider for development and testing.
If you or anyone you know is interested in supporting this development,
visit fund.meshwith.me .
$125 gets you a wireless router preconfigured with peers so all you have to
do is plug it in and connect to Hyperboria. If you have any questions
please feel free to ask. Im usually on #Noisebridge and #Sudoroom on
Freenode (VaporOne).
But feel free to explore projectmeshnet.org or even install a node on your
Linux and explore Hyperboria!

- Communication with landlord: how do we communicate with the landlord?
- Proposal: "The official policy of Sudo Room is to only act on requests
by the Land Lord that are given to Sudo Room *in writing *by the Land
Lord or one of the Land Lord's agreed upon representatives, except in
cases of emergency (ie. preventing injury), or compliance with already
written city codes." --Andrew
- Discussion:
- Some agreement on formalizing the relationship whether it's in moving
forward with the proposal as written or designating points of contact (ie,
the landlord should communicate items directly with leaseholders)
- we asked for the current door to be installed
- concerns about being handed a notice (in writing) to remove things
from the common space
- do we have recourse? can we counter/compromise?
- some suggestions to work very hard to make any request for
formalization seem conciliatory instead of hostile/aggressive
- what does our lease say? it offers the common space as an amenity.
will email the text of the lease for further details
- if we are making a move to formalize/legalize the relationship, it may
indicate a serious souring of the relationship. we should be willing to
deal with potential consequences. we want a great relationship with the
landlord that is informal at best. if we are concerned
- we have to remember that we are tenants and bring him income, so we
have power
- it is important to be able to give people without keycards/rfid access
to the space during daytime hours (ie, benefit of open door)
- good to have expectations clear from what should be in the common area
- the goal ultimately is to communicate clearly and consistently vs just
having a goal of having things in writing
- suggestion: working group to develop the items that we want
expectations about
- reiterate to landlord that it's to the landlord's benefit to make
expectations clear
- LMI offers a telephone line which we can set up and have that be one
point of contact
- we offer a lot of events, collaborate with the public school, have
random people, etc....so a lot of it is potentially outside our control and
we do often overstep a lot of what a normal tenant does and other landlords
would not necessarily be as conciliatory
- one solution is to rent more spaces :)
- Membership & Access Discussion: who is a member? what are the benefits
of membership? how is membership related to access?
- Articles of Association on member benefits:
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Articles_of_Association#Section_2.3_Benefits
- Straw poll on membership and access:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zCaEAVVjLwMrWcoPlGb09-G6bvaaiewi33FTz3OBpt…
- Discussion:
- what is the current way to get in the space? ad hoc with a principle
of limiting the number of keys
- web of trust: basically, we've been giving rfid's, pw's to the
web-based opening mechanism, and keys to individuals on an ad hoc basis (if
they ask for access, etc.)
- andrew has been acting as "keymaster" role
- proposal for unofficial keymaster role: humans who volunteer to help
people get in (helpful if they live nearby or are often in the building for
other reasons)
- important to reconcile whatever we decide with the articles (change
them if htey need to be changed) and keep in mind that whatever we do, it
should be in line with our values: commitment to public access & providing
a safe space under the auspices of an association of members who get access
and have certain benefits
- Feedback from new person: the meeting is not the best way for a new
person to get acquainted to the space because it requires some previous
knowledge. what would be a good time for a new person to come to learn
more about: collaborating, learning about existing projects, and learning
things.
- Space / New Space / The Search Continues
- Priorities / values
- Historical / Previous requirements for any potential space are listed
here: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Sudo_room/open_a_space

- Kitchen / communal kitchen
- Street-facing

back to the topic of communal living spaces / alternative archiectures... i
stumbled on this webiste today. good earth homes makes ecovillages and
beautiful experimental apartment complexes in India.
check out how the building is made! everyone's windows face inward... it's
quite beautiful. it reminds me of the pretty hof buildings in Berlin with
huge courtyards.
what do you think of this? It's also a nod to a more communal lifestyle...
Yes, I know these things are for the more well-heeled, but it's a start
right? As a tech worker I know I'm more privileged than most people in the
SF Bay area.
Hamlet
Cochin
Good Earth’s first venture into community housing was 'Good Earth Hamlet'.
An attempt at community housing which bridged the existing gap between
independent houses and the urban stereotype block of flats. The emphasis
has been on community spaces to encourage interaction while at the same
time providing for individual privacy. The half-acre plot is on the banks
of the Kaniampuzha river located in Chalikkavattom, a quiet suburb of
Cochin. The central courtyard creates an intimate space, free from vehicles
and safe for children to play. The circular form is most economical, both
in terms of space and structure. Seventeen units, using an FSI of one, and
a height of ground and two upper stories are appropriate, considering
structural economics, as well as the blending in with the surroundings. The
setback areas serve as private backyards for the ground floor units, and
the first floor duplex units have terraces at each level.
As one enters the hamlet through wooden gates, a paved pathway leads to the
green, undulating courtyard beyond which one catches a glimpse of the
waterfront through the stilted semi-open area. The stilted areas on the
ground floor act as wind tunnels and enhance the air circulation in the
courtyard. The structure is recessed in parts at the first and second floor
level to form terraces overlooking the courtyard. These terraces break down
the mass of the structure and together with the sloping roofs make an
interesting form. Walking around the courtyard, past the collage of
corbelled seats and bay windows, one is drawn to the waterfront, where a
club and crèche lie on either side of the semi-open space used for
interaction.
Each individual unit has been designed to have an identity, in terms of its
planning and location in the community. *Every*home has adequate natural
light and cross ventilation. The interior spaces flow into each other,
having walls only where required. The bedrooms are oriented towards the
outside, while the living areas overlook the courtyard. In keeping with our
principles of cost-effective construction, the structures minimize the use
of Reinforced concrete and steel. The 9" brick walls had the outer face
exposed and flush pointed, and the inside plastered. Arches are used to
span large openings and windows, while doors are spanned with pre-cast thin
lintels. Economical timber sections of jack-wood and *anjali* are used for
the doors and windows.
Filler slabs, using rejected Mangalore tiles, make up the roof and the
floors, thus making the slab lighter and also reducing structural steel.
Besides being economical, the filler slab also keeps the inside cooler and
is ideal for hot and humid climates. The interiors are kept simple with
terra cotta flooring and lime washed walls, with an occasional arch or a
bay window to add character to the space. The sewage system uses a series
of septic tanks for the solid waste, while the grey water is separately
treated. The rainwater from the roofs is allowed to percolate through the
courtyard, thus recharging the ground water. Organic waste is collected for
composting; to achieve a sustainable recycling system. Thus the design
works efficiently, using minimum circulation space and a maximum of the
site to create a built environment, which enhances the lives of its
inhabitants. A result of enthusiastic teamwork between the architects,
engineers, masons and other skilled workers, the project was completed
within the estimated cost, in a period of 16 months. The hamlet today, with
perhaps a flower patterned curtain on a window, clothes hanging on a
terrace, people conversing across terraces and a tricycle left in a
courtyard, feels warm and secure, giving room for individual expressions
while embracing them into the community.
If anyone is still awake Monday morning/late afternoon, let's go wearing
LEDs and nerd pocket protectors and invade the Berkeley skatepark!

bongo drums, max wearing tevas, people with taped together glasses!
>> It's Wednes-daaaay nite! Which means meeting and dinner.
Meeting is ostensibly in an hour, and I am the only person at
sudoroom. What's gonna happen with food? There's still time but we
need to hurry...
Hi all,
I just found out about the sudo room while looking at the JavaScript user group meetup page and noticed the weekly study group. I'm hoping to check out the space sometime after I return to Oakland on June 1st. I look forward to seeing the space and meeting you all soon!
I'm emailing now to see if anyone at sudo room is interested in setting up a darkroom? I have a pretty complete setup for B&W printing and enlarging. I also have a very cool Sinar P 4x5 view camera, though I'm still saving up for a nice lens. I would be happy to share use of the camera if others are interested in learning.
I'm going to be driving cross-country on Sunday, so I'd need to know soon if there is interest in this project as I'm currently storing it here in Wisconsin. Maybe this is all a bit too archiac, but anyway I thought I'd see if anyone is interested.
Best,
Ben Hass

Linode Support Ticket 1952977 - sudoserver (linode316279) - Scheduled
maintenance for Thu., June 6 at 8PM PDT
Support Ticket 1952977 has been updated by 'bkaplan'
--------------------------------------------------
Hello -
We have scheduled a maintenance window for the physical server your Linode
is hosted on:
Friday, June 7, 2013 between 3:00 AM and 11:00 AM UTC
(Thursday, June 6, 2013 between 8:00 PM and 4:00 AM PDT)
Downtime from this maintenance is expected to be less than 120 minutes,
however please note that the entire maintenance window may be used if
required. Your Linode will be gracefully powered down and rebooted during
the maintenance. Services not configured to start on a reboot will need to
be manually started.
Additional information regarding this maintenance event can be found here: <

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Brett Kaplan

Think you're right that we are very close to completing item (b) I listed below. There are four others that require our attention.

This can be resolved immediately with the technology we already have. There is no reason anyone to keep the door propped open.
1. door.sudoroom.org is up and running, we also have the mouse buzzer, which I hear is not working, but should be easy to fix.
2. Intercom still works3. RFID works. I have RFID fobs if anyone who doesn't already have one wants one.
I also don't think that it's always Sudo Room that props the door open, Public School does this as well. But, as far as Sudo Room is concerned, no reason to keep the door open.

Yes! I would like to hack on the articles, the meeting, finance mgmt, and outreach.
What are folks doing sunday? I bet it would be a good day to hide from the filthy sunshine ;) or another weekend...

How do folks feel about a hackday or a hackathon (not a glamorous event, but a marathon of coding) over a weekend to resolve this and perhaps a number of other logistical sudo matters? A sort of work-party version of the "State of the Room" event perhaps--something like--"Hack the Room"?

It seems like we can combine this with the recent interest in coding for
access and creating a "sudoroom is open" API. Perhaps a sudo-access
working group? I'm willing to meet with others after the meeting on
Wednesday as a Sudoroom Open Door Access working group (SODA Workers!)
