Notice from the landlord regarding tomorrow's First Friday event and new
guidelines posted by the City of Oakland.
TL;DR:
-Laurie and George (the landlords) are asking that meetings disperse by
11pm, and that all doors be locked.
-OPD will be setting up a mobile command post on Telegraph & W Grand
-No First Friday events allowed south of W Grand
-Event ends at 9pm with a moment of silence

Subject: URGENT TO ALL TENANTS!!! First Friday Tomorrow
Night....URGENT....PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
To: Laurie Cooperman Rosen <Lscoop(a)comcast.net>

The flier above (pdf) are guidelines for tomorrow night's First Friday Event
in lieu of expected potential violence from the group listed in the web site
above. Apparently at sites (unknown to me) this black bloc group has been
advocating that people come out en mass and cause trouble after First Friday
is over. We are asking that groups meeting in the building disburse by
11pm and that all doors, esp. doors to Broadway, 22nd Street and the Alley
behind out of 2135, as well as the gate into the front entrance of 2135, be
securely locked by this time. George will be there at that time to convince
all to leave the building and he will secure it.
Groups or individuals not adhering to this warning and coming back to the
building after that time may find themselves responsible not only for
damages to their persons but damage done to the building or others.
This is a serious issue; even the Security Ambassadors are being asked to go
home by midnight for their own personal safety, and there is no expectation
that the police will have enough personnel on the streets should this get
out of hand.
Many of you were not there a few years ago during the (Oscar Grant)
riots....it was not pretty, and there WAS damage to our property. Trouble
is NOT expected early in the evening. Enjoy yourselves, but try to monitor
alcohol consumption (your own and those around you) for the safety of all
tomorrow evening...and get home early....and SAFELY!
Laurie & George

FWIW—I'm in the process right now of writing up a short brief on the whole thing for Ars Technica, and am pointing out how lock picking has long been a part of hacker culture. If you have a statement, I can include/add it.

We should put up signage for Sudo Room on the Broadway side of the building.
We've already asked George about whether it would be OK to put it on the arched awning above the 2141 Broadway door and have the go ahead.
Apparently, if we use the same white on blue format, there are no additional costs. Other colored designs would require Sudo room being registered with the city & have to take part in paying for insurance for the building (albeit proportional).
Does anyone have the tools necessary to make the stencil? Anyone up for painting over the stencil in the bear future? In fact, if it's trivial to do - might make sense to try and get it done by Art Murmur tomorrow night.

Hey everyone,
Please pay membership dues when you get a chance. I updated the WePay
campaign page, so you can again donate money / pay membership dues (with a
new total in the percentage widget covering February actual and projected
March), and can collect checks whenever you see me. I live two blocks away,
so I'm more than happy to just run over if I'm not getting anything done.
At the moment, I'm trying to collect all the payment information, so I can
develop a member list for February. Paying in advance for March is always
nice too.
I think we'll be starting a sudo-fund - another, separate sub-listserv -
soon, which will discuss ideas for funding Sudoroom. Projects, processes,
the like.

Thanks Eddan,
I'm glad you're taking action on this. I'm still finishing up the wiring on my megavirus, this Friday and Saturday is Barbot 2013 in San Francisco, so I will be busy until Sunday. Come to Barbot if you're able, it's really fun!

While an ad hoc group makes sense for particular projects, I think some kind of stable, but dynamic group of Sudo folk, even if just a few people, could really help round up participation for displaying the art people make anyhow as well as other coordination as required. I propose we form something like a Dynamic Association for Displayed Art (DADA) that rotates active contributors each month based on the particular installations and projects are going on. Documenting how we go about it each month on the Sudo Wiki would also be really helpful for coordinating future events more efficiently.

This group can solicit people's art, make sure projectors, etc. are set up, make sure there are cups to accompany the wine, make sure teenagers don't exceed their turn playing Frogger, and other logistics evidently requiring organization.

Hey Everyone,
Does everyone want to do a fund-raiser/linux install athon with
RoShamboMedia, so that we can have laptops for checking-in-checking out for
sudoroom classes?(see specs inline)
These are actually nice laptops, but they aren't worth a whole lot(maybe
200 complete tops), so theft wouldn't be a big issue.
This would be a great deal for teaching classes and etc. for everyone at
sudo.
Let me know and thanks,
Rusty

For whatever purpose we need laptops, I asked around today, and I can get a
single lot of thinkpads for about 50 bucks each if we buy a lot of 10, they
are dual core 12" screens(no hard drives)...
we can get these too:

Maybe it's time for a roshambo sudo fundraiser to get laptops?

Hi guys, (all sexes)
I just came back from the noisebridge to go over some details with Mitch,
who checked out my space in berkeley last week.
i wanted to announce it Wednesday at the Meeting but as you are
talking about Friday 22nd
I have to do it now:
So I am running this community Art Gallery called the "Open Fine Art
Gallery" in the storage room of the vacant Oaks Theatre in north
Berkeley, 2 miles north of downtown.
As an art gallery its fun to bring people together, lots of new
artists that never showed before,
but nothing sells and financially it really sucks to be honest, all
savings almost gone.
We have been transitioning to a community center, every open day
(wed-sat) there is a free and donation based class...
On Friday March 22 we have a Fundraiser and Kick-Off coming up and we
are going to declare the Space a quantum community space, which means
a superposition of
- hackerspace
-makerspace
-tinkerspace
-co-creator space
- coworking space
-developer space
- you name it whatever space
- avocado institute
- nyan cat university
and whatever the people who use it as a creative community space want to call it
(declare it sudo!?)
I have been asking some folks that opened community spaces to give talks as well
and want to announce that anybody who wants to give a talk on
- opening a community space
- why a community space is awesome
please let me know for the awesome people in our community who have
awesome stuff to share about this and might wanna do so. With or
without Powerpoint, well planned or spontaneouly.
The place has a huge potential (45 feet high walls, vacant theatre next door)
So I would like to invite you all to the Kick-Off Event, and also to
be part of transition,
please let me know if you wanna get involved.
best ,
Patrick

The wikitown meetings are on hold unless folks decide to meet without Evan
and I, as we're both maxed out on bandwidth atm :/
This evening I am attending an OpenOakland project meetup at City Hall. I
would *love love love* to watch the film on Friday evening; the only
scheduled activity for which being Hacker Happy Hour with our very first
homebrewed subiir! :D

Hey all, I donated a magstripe reader/writer to the space on Thursday,
the MSRW206. I came in today to label it, and it's gone. Has anyone
seen it? Please let me know so we can use it for the door or other
innocuous purposes ;)
Greetings,
Tomorrow will be this month's installment of Nerd Nite East Bay. The
Nerd Nite franchise puts on good shows and is generally a safe bet for
supernerdiness combined with alcohol, or either one of those by
themselves depending on personal preference.
The SF Nerd Nite almost always sells out, but the East Bay version is
only just getting started. I went to last month's episode, and it was
Good.
However, I think THIS month is going to be Great. They'll have
Jessica Richman from uBiome, one of the guys on the Curiosity (Mars
rover) team, and something about fabrication (not my bag but I'm sure
it'll be fun anyway):
http://www.bayareascience.org/calendar/index.php?com=detail&eID=9578
And it occurs to me that much of this will come as no news to some of
you. (In remotely related news, this message constitutes my first
email to the sudo-discuss list.)
Anyway, there's a small chance I will not make it due to utter
exhaustion from overcommitting myself (as usual), but if I know some
of y'all will be there, I'll plan my stimulant intake accordingly.
Cheers,
Naomi

Hi all and Jake if you get this,
Does anyone know the bit of code for protecting your arduino from current spikes? I could use that now. I'm trying to run a bunch of heavy duty servos with a bit of a load. They have a separate power supply, but I'm not using any motor controller. Does this seem like a bad idea? Could that little code provide enough protection from current spikes?
Thanks for your advice,
Tracy
Thanks for your advice.
Hey all,
At the last meeting I proposed we return to a practice of developing
specific action items with corresponding members for each item. You can see
them here: http://sudoroom.org/wiki/Meeting_Notes_2013-02-20
I'd like to do this again, but for much bigger items:
1. Door Access Automation version 0.2
2. Fiscal Solvency Improvements
3. Membership process
4. sudoroom.org version 2.0
Add notes and read more here: https://pad.riseup.net/p/sudoroom
I'm happy to help facilitate and keep track of progress on more things, but
inversely, I need more help from other members to implement solutions
(which are hopefully simple, elegant systems).
// Matt
I'd be down to volunteer for something out on the streets. Manning a table or whatever.

Hello again,
I have a couple questions for dues-paying members:
1) How have you paid dues in the past? (Cash, check, other? I don't even
know what the options are yet at this moment.)
2) How would you like to pay dues?
I'd love to see an easy, online option for donations up on our website
(maybe this exists, but a quick glance at the website does not reveal
anything, and assuming your average sudoer or outsider isn't going to
search for it) but as I understand it, people may have some thoughts on
what that option would look like, leading me to ask question 3:
3) What are you constraints on option 2? Would you prefer using non-profit
/ cooperative / what have you funding options - or the lack thereof, and
thus check and cash - over for profit funding options?
4) Comments on various means of communication about dues, what's worked,
what hasn't, what you'd like to see.
This is a non-committal, information gathering exercise.
Looking forward to h^3,
Tommy

sudo'ers,
*This Friday we got Happy Hacker Hour from 7pm!* We shall indulge
- the glorious company of each other!
- exploratory conversation on the topics of Asterix.*
- wonderful homebrews from subiir (by Juul & yours truly)
- the documentary about the pirate bay, TPB_AFK
- unimaginative snacks (or imaginative? Feel free to bring some experiments)
Please bring some bucks for donations!
See you tonight and Friday, and make a great day,
Morten
Heres the saga thusly:
There are 6 pews for free in vallejo. They are a beautiful mahogany with orange/red seating. They are 16 feet long.
Marty was going to haul them with his truck but unfortunately the bed is too short. :(
So we turned to Craigslist for a mover. We found one who would do it for $60! Woot! We had it set up for 9 this morning. He calls at 8 and says his truck bed is too small. :(
So we looked up prices from U-Haul. $30 bucks for a 17' moving van. Sounds perfect. Unfortunately the fine print says U-haul charges $1 a mile. Vallejo is apprx. 30 miles away. So we are looking at something around $100-$110 with gas & bridge.
So any ideas, Sudoers? Anyone have access to a flat-bed? Or want to chip into the cost of the U-Haul? The church lady was so nice; she said she would hold them for another day if we could get it together. When I remarked on her niceness she said it was the "Jesus" in her. :)
Ideas?

After a long period of semi-benign neglect of the weightier aspects of the
Excheqing, I am happy to pass the function on to the eminently qualified
Tommy York. In addition to having drafted a new set of fiscal solvency
sheets for us which look like they will serve us very well, he brings
experience running coop finances and a business degree to the task.
This could not come at a better time, since the regular budget surpluses I
mostly passively functioned over mean that we will very soon be
crowdfunding sudo projects with our surplus income. My day job is now to
write an accounting system for a crowdfunding and community currency
platform with significant conceptual overlap with our own financial
processes, and to the extent I am able contribute this sort of automation
to what we do at sudo room, I will deeply appreciate the guidance and
leadership of someone with a firm handle on the business issues at the core
of things.
As is our ancient sudo custom, after the obligatory series of polite, coy
refusals by Tommy, the Excheqatorial sceptre was dropped and waved in the
prescribed manner, and the information on the accounts was handed over, and
the ritual of assumption is now complete.
Welcome to the future, Tommy!
Dear All,
Please see my notes from the meeting earlier this evening in Berkeley with
the Tekla labs team! More to come!
Tekla labs notes (UC Berkeley meeting)
- Nerd night - pitching a few different maker events to Nerd night around
Makers, would love East Bay DIY Bio and Sudo room ideas
- Tekla would love our thoughts on top list of biotech equipment we'd want
and costs for build commercial and makers
- They're interested in unique DIY bio use cases and also anyone interested
in taking part in their design contests
- Cinnaholic - comes highly recommended
- They'd like to think of some medium sized project to work with Sudo room
and East Bay DIY bio
- Tekla labs site - they'd love to share more high quality guides to
building biotech equipment, the idea is to make it a community
- They have some kits for making magnetic stirers, if anyone is interested,
they were thinking of doing this for work shop weekend (possibly partnering
with us)
- they're establishing profiles for all biotech do'ers from researchers in
latin america through to hobbyists and welcome anyone to set up a profile,
not fully automated but they can walk you through

Hello Sudoers! A friend alerted me to the availability of free pews! They
are made of dark mahogany. Asking Matt if Sudo Room needed some pews, he
said, "YES!" So the nice lady is holding them for us, but we need to act
fast (large numbers of calls and interest).
I would like to request 2 of them but the rest can go to my favorite hacker
space.
Truck please!
Cheers,
Ray

Dear All,
I just wanted to confirm that we are indeed still meeting this Friday at
6pm if that still works for everyone. At the moment I'm still trying to get
us access to the Berkeley space that we discussed before for the possible
East Bay DIY Bio hacker space but no word yet. So we have a choice
1. Meet at a Cafe/Bar/Restaurant (possibly Saturn Cafe) in Berkeley at 6pm
2. Alternatively, we could meet back at Sudo room at 6pm just before the
hacker happy hour and talk for a while as people arrive until about
7/7.30pm?
My preference (for simplicity) would probably be Sudo Room
Let me and our fellow Biohacker members know if you have a preference?
Please also see the agenda below compiled by Ron:
1) How to build a self-sustaining community? What sorts of organization,
resources, people, physical requirements would there be to get a space off
the ground?
Who will be in the community and what are their goals?
How might membership work?
What are our self sustaining budget numbers?
How will the lease and other such legal obligations work?
How can we collaborate with biocurious and nextgen? Who can be our allies
to build this momentum?
Other topics related: legal, regulatory, fiscal requirements, organization,
volunteers, building momentum, lab rules
2) Projects.
Everyone loves talking about projects. Given some idea of what the
community needs, how can projects build that community?
Because it takes at least 6 months of focused experience to get up to speed
in actual biological hacking, team projects will probably be the mainstay
of the lab for a while.
Team projects should probably be focused and supported by vote, but how can
we gauge what is too ambitious for a first round?
For example:
- open benchtop*
- the bioprinter project is an experience to learn from
- bio Informatics support for the lab or diyBio
- open source bioreagent design.
3) Appendix: Lessons learned:
- Biologists involved in the core of the startup process have been pretty
useful.
- getting members up to speed can take months and they need mentorship to
get to a level of creative practice.
- projects build enthusiasm as well as get people experience
- classes are important
- the community is made of people all of whom are needed to build the
community successfully (e.g. members, volunteers, class attendees, board
members (or something like board members anyway).

Hey all,
Cyrus (suh-ROOS) here.
My day job is at Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/author/cyrus-farivar/) where I write about business, tech policy, privacy and surveillance.
I'm also the author of "The Internet of Elsewhere" (http://amzn.to/lVg5Cj) a book about the history and effects of the Internet in four countries around the world.
I also love Oakland, tacos and biking—the East Bay Express gave me a "Best Bike Tour" award back in 2010 for my "Tour de Taco." (http://bit.ly/ZszktY)
I also am active in radio, and have done lots of reporting for NPR and other public radio. I lived and worked for two years ('10-'12) in Germany, working for Deutsche Welle English (German intl public radio). I've also lived in France, Senegal, Australia and Switzerland. (French is my best foreign language, but I speak some German, Persian and Spanish too.)
I met Matt at the Techliminal party the other and am curious to meet the Sudoroom community. I came by the space today and worked for a little bit and am hoping to become a member.
I have a standing engagement on Wednesday nights but I'm hoping to come to a meeting sometime next month.
Cheers,
-C

Hi everyone,
Meet Kevin. He's a senior at Met West High School, where they do a senior
thesis project. Kevin is looking at the effects of the internet on young
people, and how to get them focused more productively.
If you'd like to be interviewed, let me know - we can pick up a time to
invite Kevin to the Sudo room and talk to a few people at once.
I know you have some opinions (and experience...) about this. :)
Here's his proposal summary:
My project idea is to help young people become aware and know what the
internet and technology are doing to the planet and to our brains. Not only
are young people, millennials, wasting their time on the internet with
social networking sties, but they don’t gain anything educational and
useful or for financial benefit while on these sites. One thing they are
losing is time on the internet for social networking and not accomplishing
work or homework with the same effort and competence. We should care
because it is controlling people and just making them spend most of their
time on the sites. Recent studies show that technology is changing how our
brain works; reading, concentration, contemplation and our capacity, which
are also losing the full abilities of the human brain. Since we depend on
technology so much, I want to make people aware of how our brain is being
impacted and find different ways that we can minimize our loss. I want to
tell them that they should use their brain power and time on something that
will help them in the future so they do not lose both of them during the
same time at a young age.

It's been on the local pad all along. I've just copied the contents to
https://pad.riseup.net/p/sudoroom and starred the revision, but good
luck keeping it up there...
Sorry I probably won't be there tonight. Still recovering from a bad
cold. (I had to tunnel through ssh to do this...)

Hi everyone,
Could someone with the blank agenda for tonight's meeting possibly copy it
to https://pad.riseup.net/p/sudoroom or send it to me (I can copy it in)?
Thanks!
Marina
Yo sudosicles,
Sudoshroom has started shrooming today. We have a deal with Farleys and get
their awesome espresso grounds for free. This means that>>
1) right now we got around 3/4lbs of high quality grounds at sudoroom
leftovers. Come pick em up asap and use em in your garden/shrooming. This
wont be the last time we will have leftoer grounds.
2) sudoshroom won\t need grounds collected by ourselves space. We can still
keep collecting but personally Im unsure what it will be used for, because
for shrooming, the grounds we get from farleys are plentiful and with less
risk of contamination, more dry and easier to handle. The alternative to
collecting is composting in the bins mr Senate set up (good job Matt!),
which seems pretty fine too.
Make a great night,
Morten
