I have been asking for access to the new router for a couple weeks
now, and people told me it wasn't ready. Now I see it's apparently
already operating? Please give me access.

Hey folks. Sudo Room's weekly Wednesday hangout will happen tonight as
usual, from 8-9. We're going to be discussing the possibility of writing a
newsletter and plans for upcoming events.
See you there,
Andy
Is anyone else interested in mechanical keyboards, or just keyboard collecting/customization as a hobby? I got really into it during the pandemic, and I was thinking that organizing some kind of mechanical keyboards meetup could attract additional attention (and possible venue revenue?) for the Omni/Sudoroom. I'd also just love to geek out over builds, cool vintage finds, etc. What do you all think?
Jonathan
Hey Sudoers. Here are the highlights from our March meeting. This email and
notes from past meetings can always be found on the wiki
<https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Meetings#Archive>.
*Facilities:*
It’s gotten much cleaner, and we’re still going! Plus: Jake is going to
install a drain in the roof to resolve our leaks. I’m going to remove some
of the paint on the skylights and see how it affects the space, and we’ll
plan to install shades before the summer. Jonathan set up a display in the
main area, but is currently debugging a Chromecast in order to display
useful content. Volunteers for any of these projects are wanted!
*Finance: *
We’ve got a bunch of awesome grant opportunities and need more volunteers!
Even if you have no experience, message finances(a)sudoroom.org if you want
to help. This is our biggest need right now!
*Comms: *
You can now sync our calendar with Google Calendars and iCal! Try it now,
and you’ll always have the latest events in your personal calendar app!
We’re also looking for contributions to a possibly newsletter. Email me or
Romy if interested.
*Projects: *
We’ve got a bunch of active projects going on!
-
*The Hack-o-Mat:* message the general group if you want to modify or
upgrade it
-
*Laptops for all: *message Rajah if you want to donate, refurbish, or
obtain a laptop
-
*Hallway TV:* message Jonathan if you want to learn or help
-
*Assisting victims of stalking and domestic violence with online
privacy:* Message me if you want to help an org that reached out looking
for assistance
*Events: *
In addition to the usual, we’ve got some tentative new programming for
March:
1.
*Sci-fi RPG night*: I'd like to host a game night at our Wednesday party *on
the 15th or 22nd*! If you’d like to join to hangout or play a game,
message me your interest!
2.
*Movie night:* This is very tentative, but if you’d be interested in
watching Hackers or Lawnmower Man or something, message your interest and
availability in April. Would you rather it be on a weeknight or a weekend?
3.
*A Sudo Mesh meeting* (!): I'm trying to organize this on *a Wednesday
night or Sunday in late March*. If you want to participate, message me
or join the mesh listserv here
<https://sudoroom.org/lists/postorius/lists/mesh.sudoroom.org/>!
Thoughts? Complaints? Animal videos? Share 'em below!

I'm pretty busy this week and have an art show in Los Angeles next weekend (
https://www.goethe.de/ins/us/en/sta/los/ver.cfm?event_id=24476779&fuseactio…
)
I had a thought about the space, we're always trying to make it more
presentable. I think it would be cool to copy concepts from retail spaces -
not really like make SudoRoom a store, but like display projects and make
things prettier to lure things in.
This could dovetail nicely with the hardware hacking / fashion / light
projection projects =D as we oculd turn SudoRoom into more of a gallery
spaces while simulatenously making it look nicer. And the cleaning issue
would resolve itself in this way because then we'd have to throw things
away to make space for blank pages
I think this would be super appealing to tech people who are stuck working
on software all the time. it would also be a chance to show off team
members projects, imagine robot art on a pedetal or hanging on th ewall
you can't have a nice retail space without emptiness and it would help us
work on the clutter which really drives a lot of people away too

Hello, I've been lurking in the IRC channel for a bit, and I'd like to formally join the list and see what I can do to contribute to the group as a volunteer. I love computers and technology, and I have a bit of experience troubleshooting/building computers. I do some goofing around with linux now and then, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. I'm also a bit of a mechanical keyboard hobbyist. I'm a short drive/bike ride from the Omni, so I think I can make it to meetings in person now and then. Are there any projects in need of some extra hands?
Hi everyone,
You're getting this email either because 1) you're on the sudoroom discuss
email list, or 2) because I BCC'd you directly.
Tonight I'll be hosting Sudoroom for those who want to come hack on whatever,
in person, or through telepresence (see the last link in this email)
ALSO NOW FEATURING: SoftWEAR hacking too: most Tuesday evenings the sewing area
at Omni Commons (in the basement) is also active so bring your fabric and
textile projects and technical repairs; we've got heavy duty and serger sewing
machines available. You're also welcome to bring your own machine to have it
checked out and tuned up for tip-top operation or to just sew alongside others.
in the past few weeks, we've had about 5-15 people over the course of the
evening, not including remote participants who logged in through telepresence
Jenny put it on the Omni calendar:
https://omnicommons.org/blog/events/hardware-hack-night-3-2022-03-01/
Here it is on the sudoroom page:
https://sudoroom.org/events/hardware-hack-night-2022-02-15/
that says 7PM but I try to be there earlier.
if you get to the door (at the corner of 48th and shattuck) and you can't get
in, call me or someone else who's there to let you in! Email me if you don't
have my phone number. Actually a great way to get our attention is to join the
video chat link at the end of this email!
We don't always hear the doorbell and I don't answer it anyway!
You should get on this sudoroom discuss mailinglist! click here:
https://sudoroom.org/lists/postorius/lists/sudo-discuss.sudoroom.org/
and you should donate monthly to sudoroom, monthly, by signing up here:
https://sudoroom.org/humans
and if you want to make a one-time donation, you can go here:
https://sudoroom.org/donate
if you can't make it in person: join the jitsi videochat with the room, and
chat with each other as well as a giant TV screen/speakerphone on the wall:
https://meet.waag.org/turtlesturtlesturtles
(don't worry if you're the only one in the "room", others will join eventually,
and if the camera is pointed at the floor, just yell until someone comes and
talks to you and then ask them to aim it back up into the room)
see you soon!
-jake
Hey y’all,
Tomorrow I’m looking for support to mount a TV in the entrance hall that
can link to our live calendar so everyone that domes through can see what
rooms are or aren’t available for the month. Or even just general classes
they can pop into like hardware hacking Tuesdays.
Can anyone help with this?

Hey there!
I'm Ana and I'm on a vacation in the Bay Area until the 25th. I'm thinking
about spending time at SudoRoom every now and then, especially to learn
more about the SudoMesh project. I tried finding something akin to
README.MD on the project's Github but I couldn't find it, so maybe I'll
just hang out at the Sudo lair :D ..I'd like to come to the hardware hack
night next week, but today I have dinner around those times.
If I ring the door at any time of the day, any day, how likely is there to
be a member who can open it for me? Is there a chat room dedicated to
SudoMesh project?
Thanks!

From a mounted mast, we can't hit anything north of the 24/580 bridge iirc
LMI is preferred due to being solar-powered. They have the same
reseller/sharing terms as Sonic.
Monkeybrains would be cool if we can get it :) Omni is unfortunately
surrounded by highways and condos, hence not being the hub of WiFi we'd
love it to be...

I talked with Monkeybrains and apparently we can get internet from them! It
will be much better than what we have now, and our politics and goals are very
aligned.
from their website:
https://www.monkeybrains.net/
"Monkeybrains is a San Francisco based ISP founded by Rudy Rucker and Alex
Menendez in 1998. With their crew of like-minded renegades, these two are
bringing affordable, hassle-free, month-to-month internet service to the
residents and businesses of San Francisco. Monkeybrains customers appreciate
our incredible speed-to-cost ratio and our ability to install quickly, with
minimal wait time from lead to install.
In the late 90's Monkeybrains started out as a dial-up ISP running out of a
warehouse in San Francisco. We ran the whole thing with a few desktop
computers connected to a bunch of modems. In the early 2000s we moved
operations to the datacenter and began offering web hosting and collocation
services. In 2009 Monkeybrains dramatically expanded the ISP by offering
wireless Internet access. We have come a long way since those dial-up days!
Monkeybrains now operates a hybrid network of fiber optic and high capacity
wireless links servicing over 20,000 locations with over 100 new locations
coming online every week. With every installation, we push the limits of
available technology and over-deliver bandwidth. We took this approach during
a recent campaign where Monkeybrains delivered 300Mbps+ to approved residents
of San Francisco using equipment only previously seen on commercial buildings.
Our focus within San Francisco has enabled us to have a personal relationship
with the individuals, businesses and communities we serve. In addition to our
personal approach to service and support, Monkeybrains takes a progressive
stance on Net Neutrality and we believe the Internet should be secure,
unbiased and available to all! View our customer map to see if we are
available in your area."
Does anyone know who we have internet service with now, how much we pay, and
whether there's a penalty for cancelling after we get service with
Monkeybrains?
Does anyone have questions or objections to Omni switching over?
-jake
Hey folks!
At a recent meeting we agreed to change the meeting schedule back to how it
used to be: now, general meetings are on the first Wednesday of each month,
and all other Wednesdays are parties. You can still bring up any business
at a party, but the change is meant to allow people to know which meetings
are likely to be most active.
I will be at Sudoroom for tonight‘s party and encourage anyone to stop by
in person or online. The next real meeting will be the first Wednesday of
March. The agenda for tonight‘s party is hang out and share projects, and
discuss a new calendar plug-in I’m testing. If you wanna add anything else
this agenda, reply below!
Here is the calendar I’m testing. The big differences are that it’s much
easier to make events in this plug-in, and anyone can sync the calendar to
Google calendars or icalendar. Thoughts?

I attended my first thursday javascript session and everyone agreed to
rename it Progrmaming! everything! everywhere! all at once!
I stuck Michelle Yeoh on the flyer if that's ok (I don't want to make stuff
too commercial but her hot dog fingers and the movie reminded us that stuff
is always perpetually changing)
Last session we talked about using chatGPT. Even though it's trendy it was
a cool debate, and someone used it to create a learning curriculum for
learning programming, and even had it construct lessons plans that he was
tweaking.
The conversation got a little spicy we talked about if chat gpt would
replace teachers (some people thought it would, some though it wouldn't.).
The next one is next Thursday!

i'm looking for a connector (with wires already on it ideally but i'll take
the kit if that's what's available) like this:
https://www.molex.com/pdm_docs/sd/436450800_sd.pdf
number 43645-0800 which is the eight-pin connector but i also happen to need
two of the two-pin ones, although those are less of a problem for me right
now.
I'm talking about the "plug" end which has holes for metal pins to stick into,
from a connector that mounts on a board. I need the end that goes on wires.
thank you!

weird question but
i'm looking for plastic drinking straws to use for bike wheel lights. I know
they're illegal in california so i figure people probably have some stashed
and hoarded and don't want to give them up, but we need them.
we're planning another bike light making session and then a bikelight
installing event before the next East Bay Bike Party, which happens on
February 11th from Rockridge BART (nearby sudoroom!)
I want to make lights like these to go on wheels:
https://www.radlicht.com/store/products/radlicht-bike-wheel-light-red/
we have tons of battery holders with switches, plus we can make some sort of
automatic thing to turn them on - not sure how to do that yet so suggestions
are welcome! Probably a two-state tilt thing that charges a capacitor to turn
on a FET to turn on the lights, so it only takes power when the wheel is
turning.

Hey Peter,
Thanks for drawing my attention to the occultation.
It was fun to watch even with the light pollution we have in the city.
When mars got very close to the moon, my eyes couldn't see it because the
moon is so much brighter but the Griffith Park telescope in LA streamed the
view of the setting and rising of mars nicely.
Here's a photo taken by my friend Hector in Waterford, CA
[image: signal-2023-01-30-182913.jpeg]
Tonight (Jan 30th) in the early evening, there is a very interesting
astronomical event -- an occultation of the planet Mars by the Moon. A
full occultation (eclipse) of Mars is visible all across the southern
portion of the United States (and further south). For the Bay Area, the
Moon will narrowly miss Mars. You have to be south of a line from
approximately Soledad through Fresno to see Mars fully covered by the Moon.
Closest approach is about 8:54pm PST for the Bay Area. The orange-red
color of Mars will make a striking contrast with the silver-white
surface of the Moon. This event can be seen naked-eye, but binoculars
or a small telescope will definitely help.
Cheers, -Peter
This is just a heads up about the laser cutter. PLEASE make sure the
chiller is operating/on when you are using the laser. IF you do not know
what the chiller is you SHOULD NOT be using the laser cutter. I found the
chiller unplugged due to something laying on the power cord causing it to
become detached. If we are not vigilant in the start up step of the laser
sudoroom will not have one due to operator error. Not wanting to be a
castigator just wanting people to know that stupid things like a badly
placed object can be the end of great equipment.

I'd like to take one of the laptops from the laptop closet, and wanted to
check if anyone had any plans for it. It's a Sony Vio with some cosmetic
damage on the side.
Jake said that there's a spreadsheet for tracking the donated laptops, and
I wanted to ask for access and instructions on how to withdraw one.
Thanks,

Hey folks. Tonight’s meeting is low stakes. The only thing on the agenda is
general discussion and show and tell.
Stop by if you like. 8 pm.

I couldn't make the last meeting - but we didn't have meetings set up in
our calendar
- I'd like to also have this regularly sending out tweets to remind
people, I always forget
- I guess we should earmark some sudoroom meetings as more significant,
larger, so people who can't always go can be poked and reminded of a larger
one?
I guess ideally too we could have a quarterly email list showing what was
going on , what updates we have!
It's cool, it was the first time I was able to attend the women in coding
group last monday (only online). Maybe i'll join in remotely!
