Sudoers, any objections to omni spending $12k now (plus $12k later) to
fix our roof? Deal of the decade IMHO. Can we consent on this by
tonight? Also, who's tonight's delegate?

David I thought you were gonna tell me when you were meeting Mike at
Omni! You promised me like 3 times! Boo. But regardless, thank you.
I think Omni should jump at this opportunity. $12k for a 7-year
guarantee on the whole roof, plus another $12k that we don't need to
pay until refi? AND skylights? It's a no-brainer to me. It's a chunk
of our current savings, and we'll need to be extra frugal after this,
but 100% necessary.
Hardest part may be finding 7 dry days in a row, and 3 volunteers to
commit to being there 3 days in a row. I can to commit to being one of
them - can 2 other people commit to that also?

That's not so much and so just speaking personally, I am not as concerned about the structural impacts of the weight of the additional layer as I would otherwise be, though others may be concerned (since it's also true we don't know how many layers of roof we presently have, as we have not yet cored the roof.)

Hello!
A friend referred me to Sudo to see if anybody could maybe help me out in
fixing my laptop. It's a 2014 macbook pro, the battery had been fussy for a
while, then I didn't use it for a couple months and it started getting
slower with the mouse freaking out frequently. Then my friends cats knocked
a small amount of water onto it which I cleaned up, and now it wont turn
on. The charger also won't charge it.
Hopefully it's just an issue with the battery, what do ya'll think?
Thanks so much,
Juhlz
Does anyone have login access to the Sudo Room instagram account?
https://www.instagram.com/sudoroom/
It appears to be abandoned but I would like to begin posting about hack
nights to get people and the space activated. If we can't get access to
this account I may create a new one.

Hi, I’m Ron - Food Not Bombs volunteer and cook. I found an iPad 3 this week, but it’s locked, needs Apple ID and password for activation. Anybody know how to bypass this? Thanks.
Ron
Tuesday night around 10PM, two people came into Sudoroom while we were having
"Hardware Hacking Tuesdays" and one of them said he had been there before, and
he said his name was "El" or "Ellis". He was about 5'10" and had short black
dreadlocks and no glasses. I don't remember his friend's name, but he left
after not too long.
El asked for help with setting up speakers, asked if he could use the computer
for something, asked for various tools and seemed to be working on something
like hacking a piece of network gear that had been in the e-waste pile, which
seemed normal enough for someone coming to hardware hack night. We helped with
various requests but mostly he worked on it by himself.
He had his phone connected to the speakers near the laser cutter, and a few
times I had to ask him to turn down the music because it was making it harder
for us to talk to each other, but it wasn't a big deal.
He asked if he could smoke inside, which was one of several times the topic of
fire came up. Apparently at some point he said "I like to set things on fire"
but I didn't hear that. We told him that people don't smoke indoors and
someone took him outside and showed him the side doors so he could smoke out
there, and then he came back in. He went out and came back in a couple of
times.
Around 12:45 AM, I got up to go to the bathroom and when I got to the door to
the hallway next to CCL's entrance, it was closed, so I opened it and he was
standing there and said "there's a fire" and I turned and looked and there was
a paper shopping bag on the floor that was on fire. I yelled and stomped out
the fire and the others came to help. He said "You locked me out. You stole
my phone". I told him to gather his shit and we escorted him to get his phone
and other items, and I escorted him to the door and made sure he had all his
stuff with him and he left. I was unable to get a picture of him.
After he left I looked at the area where he was standing, and there had been a
sign or paper on the door that had been entirely burned, as well as the paper
bag set on fire. I poured water on everything and made sure there was no fire
left. Myself and the others present then went around the whole building to see
if there was anyone else inside the building.
The side doors (on 48th street) were not latched, although they were mostly
closed. We should probably try to make those doors close automatically.
If anyone else has information on "El" aka "Ellis" please speak up. One person
said "Well that's horrible. That guy has been to sudo many times before"
good night

Hi potential basement storage & media lab users, the following items, which
were previously stored unconnected (& under or behind other things etc),
are due to go out Monday:
- 1-2x large free-standing apparently-broken multifunction printers ~4’ high
- 1x heavy industrial sewing machine I’m told is broken. I believe this had
been sudo’s, but I’m not sure.
- 1x heavy piece of what I believe is motorized bookbinding equipment.
- Large mirror from basement kitchen, & plates / kitchen supplies from its
NW pantry
Removal of the basement items has been been noticed before, but I just
wanted to make sure y’all were aware
David
In case this hadn’t already been noticed, fyi I’m told Robb will come by
omni today at 530p to see if there’s more of his things he wants to take to
offsite storage.
As I understand it the plan will be for Robb to consolidate the gear
(including some more lighting from what I understand) that he wants to take
out of omni in a discrete area of the ballroom with a note, a picture will
then be taken and distributed to the lists to see if what all he is taking
out is okay with folks, and after a couple days if there is no objection or
concerns he will return with Toan to pick up that stuff.
Best,
David
Hi all,
Omni will have a large e-waste pickup probably within the next week.
Therefore, now would be a very good time to purge e-waste items throughout
Sudo & CCL.
If either group has e-waste, please concentrate / identify these items in a
place for easy removal, and let me know they are there?
Ps. Please don’t bring any items from home, only items presently on-site at
omni.
Thank you,
David
hi everyone and welcome to another edition of legacy information technology
hacking.
Here at sudoroom, we are having trouble getting on the internet because our
VT-320 terminal's keyboard cord is missing the RJ-9 end that connects it to the
rest of the terminal. Thus our internet experience is read-only and in that
sense, much like television.
this is what our terminal looks like, except that the connector on the end of
the keyboard cord is missing:
https://www.reddit.com/r/retrobattlestations/comments/bu50g1/dec_vt320_term…
I know we're all very familiar with the RJ45 connector, the venerable
transparent acrylic connector on the end of all of our ethernet cables, and the
aged among you also know the RJ11 connector, which joined our telephones to the
POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) but even most hackers are only slightly aware
of a third, smaller variant: RJ9
https://www.asomep.com/en/a-1-1313-29-0-0-0/PLUG-UTP-MALE-CONNECTOR-RJ9-C3e…
our terminal uses RJ11 for its serial ports, and we have no shortage of such
cords for that. But it uses an RJ9 connector for the keyboard, and while we
might be able to find a cord on an old telephone, it will not easily uncrimp,
and splicing and soldering those wires to the keyboard would result in oxidized
connections and slow switching transition waveforms and "third state" bits
between the keyboard and terminal. So what we really need is a brand new,
uncrimped RJ9 plug that we can put onto the keyboard cord (after figuring out
which way it goes on there) so that our terminal can function at full power.
yes i know, the internet allows for remote shopping experiences and i could
simply order a connector to be mailed to me, but I know at least ten of you
nerds out there have an uncrimped RJ9 plug or two in your electronics bins and
I want to reward your thoughtful preservation of materials by giving you a
chance to donate that connector to sudoroom (tax deductable of course)
bonus points if you have a crimper that works with RJ9 plugs.
We are having Hardware Hacking Tuesdays again every week (for now) but I am
available if you want a special access tour at a different time! Lets get this
terminal back in working order.

The skylight with the heavy duty exhaust fan is leaking quite profusely
with the recent rains, and was dripping down on a bunch of valuable looking
electronics equipment stashed on and next to the table closest to the
entrance.
I slit open a large garbage bag and draped it over the equipment to protect
it from further water damage, just as a stop-gap measure. If someone has a
bit of time today, it would be good to clear that entire area of equipment,
put a large bin under the leaks, and maybe try to dry off any valuable
equipment we'd like to keep with a heat gun...
Patrik
I hear with heavier rains, there are now many leaks, and especially in case
he ballroom. *Whomever may be at Omni right now, if you can, please mark
the floor location of where drips land with a big, taped ‘X’? Such as with
blue painters tape, masking tape, duct tape or similar - So we can better
locate the corresponding leaking areas on the roof after the rain stops.*
Thank you 🙏

Hi,
Tomorrow Monday 10/18, electrical maintenance will be conducted in Sudo
such that Sudo’s fridge will no longer need a super long and
non-code-compliant extension cord to be functional, and can just plug in
directly.
The fridge has been emptied of prior biohazard by some kind / selfless
soul, but it is not itself cleaned.. It is still extremely gross. Now would
be the time to bleach it, and perhaps deionize / bathe it in UVb light or
otherwise sanitize it to determine whether it can be truly rid of mold in
all the places we can’t see.
As jake pointed out, it is a really nice fridge, so it is in some important
respects worth saving. At the same time, we are coming up on our last
planned batch of dump runs.
It has been at least a couple months, and the fridge is still unsanitary
(not complaining at all just stating the facts). If the fridge is not
sanitized by the end of the week, unless there is any objection, I will
plan to have it taken to the dump.
Fairly soon we will have banks, insurance representatives et al walking the
building. In its current condition, I would not want any of these parties
them to randomly open the fridge placed right along the common path of
travel through the building, so imo, this fridge needs to either be hecka
cleaned, or gone.
If a sudoer plans to take on this challenge, please let me know?
Best,
David

- Task: Replace short lengths of existing 2-wire thermostat cable, with
3-wire min.18 gauge (18/3, solid or stranded) thermostat cable, connecting
all basement furnaces with their thermostats (not needed for disco room
furnace). These furnaces serve basement, entrance hall, and ballroom.
- Reason: So we can have the option of running fans without heat - to help
filter air even when heat isn’t needed - in order to reduce COVID
risk/spread in the building (especially during events etc.)
Anyone who has done basic inside wiring for telco / internet should be able
to run this cable, which can be purchased by the door or in spools from HD
for cheap. I don’t think we’ll need more than about 75’ in length at most.
It is not necessary to attach the cable to thermostat or furnace, just run
the cable. I can come attach it to thermostats and furnaces.
One way to do this would be to:
- remove any staples / ties affixing old cable
- strongly tape new cable to ethe end of existing cable
- pull old cable (connected to the new cable) through
If anyone has spoons to take this on lmk. There are a lot of building
maintenance tasks rn, and I don’t know when I’ll get to this. Omni is
getting ballroom rental requests needed for omnis bottom line, and for
everyone’s safety we really should have this feature in place before
hosting public events. So, it is pressing, if there is a volunteer.
Best,
David

Hi fellow sudoers,
Does anyone have a copy of Sudo's most recent lease with omni?
This is being asked in order to get all our paperwork in a row for
new/cheaper insurance and for review by potential lenders -
The most recent lease w/ sudo that I could find
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KgimyxNSZ5K_ipeWBBYGDPPIH6JYi6UZ/view?usp=…>
is c.2016 w/ OOC (rather than OC), and I believe there normally would have
been about two more rounds of leases since that time -
If someone knows whether a more recent lease exists, or can provide a copy,
that'd be super great -
Thank you,
David
Hi CCL & Sudo,
1. On Monday 10/11, CCL Lab Manager Dave A. is scheduled to carefully clean
the furnace mounted overhead on CCL’s north wall, in order to reduce the
potential future disturbance of excessive dust during planned furnace
maintenance. Please contact David A. (cc’d) for more info or to assist.
2. Following Dave’s work on 10/11, two maintenance tasks are projected to
be undertaken sometime this week.
The exact day and time for each task is not yet known, and it is unlikely
we will get more than one day’s advance notice, which will be promptly
passed on to CCL / Sudo as soon as received.
- Electrical: Relocating the space heater’s on/off switch from highish up
in the BSL, to a more accessible height near the north doorway into
CCL/Sudo room, where it will be replaced with a timer switch. This work is
not anticipated to precipitate an excessive disturbance of dust, and should
not impact electrical service to this room. However, the electrician will
be working in this area, likely on a ladder, which may temporarily block
access to some of the freezers et al in CCL’s NE area, for approximately
<2h (barring unforeseen circumstances).
- Furnace:
The blower (and air filter) for the furnace in this room is due to be
replaced by an HVAC professional. With the area cleaned in advance per item
1 above, it is not anticipated to involve the disturbance of excessive
dust. It is not anticipated that this work will impact electrical service
to CCL. The work will involve the placement of a large ladder below /
adjacent to this furnace, impacting access to cabinets & storage below the
furnace.
To reduce Omni’s labor costs, I would ask CCL/Sudo members to please allow
these technicians the elbow room needed to safely complete their work with
a minimum of conversation, barring of course any safety concerns. Rather,
if anyone has any questions about the above planned work, as always please
feel free to contact me directly at any time.
Many thanks everyone,
David // 415-430-8362
Hi all,
Per prior discussion, electrical maintenance will be conducted to increase
the number of available receptacles in the southeast portion of sudo room,
near sudo's fridge & stairs down to basement, in order to remove
life-safety hazards presented by excessive extension cords / power strips
in this location under/adjacent to an unrated mezzanine etc. This work is
now planned for *Monday 10/18 in the AM.*
This work will likely require temporarily de-powering one or more circuits
to Sudo Room presently feeding receptacles in this particular area and
along portions of the south wall.
Please ensure all steps are taken to save work and safely depower equipment
in this area prior to this work, *or provide me with instruction to safely
do these things*, *including the sudo mesh cage. This work may impact
internet access within the building while work is being undertaken.* The
maintenance window is not planned to last longer than a single day.
'Small' one-off jobs like this can be difficult to affordably schedule well
in advance, as they are typically subject to electricians' squeezing in the
work around bigger jobs they have elsewhere. Therefore, in most cases we
are unlikely to get more than ~2 days advance notice as in this case.
Separately, on Sunday 10/17, an electrical assessment will be undertaken to
see how providing more compliant power to the ad-hoc / DIY exhaust fan on
sudo's roof (south roof area of back room) could be accomplished. Providing
more permanent electrical power to this fan will not necessarily be
undertaken sunday, but it is possible. Assessing / addressing the roof fan
issue should not directly impact power to sudo or ccl on Sunday, but if and
when this becomes required, I will notice sudo and ccl.
Thanks to everyone for bearing with these ongoing life-safety improvements
to the building and please hit me up with any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
David // 415-430-8362

Tonight at Sudoroom we had hardware hacking tuesdays.
A new hacker showed up and helped hook up the exhaust for the big red laser cutter!
but we were unable to set it up because the desktop computer nearby is gone.
Does anyone know how to set up software to use the laser cutter? I made a new
desktop computer over at the 3D printer desk, and I can make another one for
the laser cutter if we can't figure out what happened to the old one.

I called the number but got no answer, I'm just going through stuff in pseudo

Regarding furnaces, space heaters and CCL.
I don’t recall anyone asking CCL if we needed or wanted a furnace or a
space heater.
I think the whole process of working on the furnace and space heater is
distracting to the lab work we are doing, it is also making extra work for
us, and putting an added risk factor in place.
I for one don’t want to repair the furnace or space heater in CCL.
Some of my reasons are:
1. Oakland, CA has the best weather in the world. As far as cold
weather, the thermometer only rarely goes below 45 degrees F at night in
winter. This is not Siberia or N. Dakota, it’s Oakland. Back in the 90’s
was the last time it got cold enough to turn on a heater for a few nights.
2. It’s true that someone brought in a small electric heater to CCL.
I think they were sleeping at the lab or doing some web surfing. The
Temescal library is only a few blocks away and they will likely have the
heat turned up for people to be comfortable as they read and snooze. I
have worked at CCL even late at night for 5 years and have not noticed any
extremes of cold there. CCL is a lab and it’s warm enough to do lab work
there year round. There’s some garments that used to be known as “Long
Johns” Those and a cap or hoody all anyone ever needs to keep warm in CCL
in winter. I think there should be a ban on heaters at CCL. The small
heater I found left on with no one in the lab multiple times and unplugged
it.
3. CCL is about working on making a better tomorrow and we have a lot
of challenges to meet with things like global warming. That’s something I
think we all need to take responsibility for. Humans will soon be higher
on the endangered species list if we don’t. Furnaces and heaters, large or
small draw a lot of power, gas and/or electricity, and are not sustainable,
and not energy efficient by any means. It takes a tremendous amount of
energy to heat a space the size of the Omni commons building. What effect
does this use of gas and electricity have on global warming? Does it not
make perfect sense to put on warm socks and underwear, a wool cap and be
warm as toast without using large amounts of these resources to heat a
large space? Hello, this is the 21st century and we do need to mend our
ways for the sake of future generations, and life on earth in general. So
as far as CCL goes, I say no to heaters.
4. I have been informed by our treasurer, Michael Arent that CCL and
also the Omni are facing some financial difficulties. It seems like at
this time we need to be careful about spending money. There are a number
of projects at the Omni commons that would seem to have priority over
heating concerns. A roof that doesn’t leak when it rains, for example.
Paying for gas and electricity to heat the building doesn’t seem to be
necessary at all. Let’s consider selling the furnace as scrap metal and
raise some small funds for repairing the Omni.
5. Lab work takes a great deal of focus and we don’t wish to have the
disturbances of any work going on overhead. We have a great deal of
materials and time invested in what we are doing. I’m the one who asked
for the COI and an incident is fresh in my memory of a friend’s lab in
Oakland where some work was being done and a very heavy piece of metal came
crashing down from a high roof to land on a workstation, damaging
equipment. If anyone had been sitting at that workbench at the time, they
probably would have been killed or crippled. Of course I want to know who
is going to be responsible for any injuries or damage done and that
COI should be approved by CCL before any work takes place at the lab. Then
I wouldn't need to bring it up at an inconvenient time. We also strongly
feel that the labwork we are doing is so much more important than working
on the heating system. A couple projects at CCL are involved with public
health (matters of life and death) and we don’t wish to be distracted by
activities overhead or have to do additional cleanup work because of them.
We really have enough on our plates and would appreciate being left alone
to do our work undisturbed. Please desist. No need for heaters at CCL.
Let's hear from some of the others who are in the lab year round, are you
reasonably comfy or not? What concerns do you have and what improvements
would you like to see at CCL in the year to come?
Best wishes always,
Eddy Spinner

Hi sudoers.
Hardware hacknight will be happening tonight at sudo room starting at 7 pm.
Last week:
* An old laser was torn down into its useful components
* Some folks repaired a broken stereo amplifier
* Some of us opened up an old Macintosh SE/30 and got rw access to the
ancient 60 MB harddrive from a modern linux PC, then set up System 7.5 in
an emulator and attempted to talk to the old Mac over serial
Tonight:
* We'll be trying to get the old mac browsing the modern web and set up at
sudo room's front table.
* We'll attempt to turn two broken very high pressure syringe pumps (HPLC)
into a single working one.
* <insert your project here>
Come hang out!
Mask required at all times when indoors and vaccination required (proof of
vaccination not required). If you want to eat you must do so outside (last
week we had a pizza break out on the sidewalk).
There's a new doorbell on the front door that should get our attention in
case you don't have an access card.

Hi sudoers!
We're rebooting the sudo room meetings. Last week we tried to do an
in-person only meeting but I gave late notice and very few people showed.
Let's try this again with a virtual _and_ in-person meeting.
I'll set up some microphones, speakers and webcam to connect those of us at
sudo room to those joining online.
We'll send out a link to the video conference when we're about to begin.
If you're joining in person, remember that masks and vaccines are required
(though not proof of vaccine). There is a new doorbell on the front door if
your access card isn't working (or you don't have one).

I think six months ago or more, we talked about trying to figure out where
these emails are coming from and whether they're accurate. If they're
accurate, it would be nice to get a clarification of the situation and what we
need to do about it, otherwise if this is an automatic message that is sending
out confusing and incorrect numbers, we should figure out where it's coming
from and turn it off.
Does anyone control the email address "Omni Commons <quickbooks(a)notification.intuit.com>"
it's coming from o4.e.notification.intuit.com [167.89.82.160]
also, we need to remove the email address rcsheets(a)acm.org from these automatic
messages, i'm pretty sure they don't want to receive these messages anymore or
hear anything about us.

Hi CCL and Sudo,
Forwarded below is my update to consensus list on the present status of
omni's various furnaces / heaters, including those situated within
CCL/Sudo. I encourage all to read through it, and I wanted to extend my
gratitude to everyone who allowed the safety of the furnace and space
heater to be assessed on 9/23.
In addition to that update, based on feedback from folks in the lab at the
time, *I also wanted to develop a better protocol for the scheduled
maintenance of these fixtures and for infrastructure issues generally with
CCL and Sudo, in particular CCL*.
To this end I had the following questions for CCL:
1. I was told there was a Lab Manager -- I believe whose name is Dave? May
I have this person's contact info?
As moving forward, it would be great to ensure this person is directly
apprised of any maintenance work which may affect CCL.
2. During the work, a CCL'er demanded that the HVAC person present their
Certificate of Insurance (COI). I wanted to respectfully ask that in the
future, if such questions be directed at me or whomever is coordinating the
maintenance for omni, rather than of the tech performing the maintenance.
As I don't believe this is the sort of paperwork that tradesfolk carry
around with them on their person while on ladders etc., and it can feel
vaguely threatening, whereas I am happy to provide this if this is
required.
(Parenthetically on this topic - I also was hoping CCL might provide their
annual COI to me or to the finance WG, to aid the pursuit of re-applying
for cheaper building/fire insurance for the whole building.. I've been
meaning to gather all these)
3. Per my update to consensus, I would like (w/ zero pressure) to ask if
CCL might consider voluntarily safely undertaking a cleaning of the furnace
platform upon which there is a layer of dust (such as wiping down with wet
wipes i imagine, or some other manner involving a minimum of air
disturbance). This way, the furnace could be occasionally serviced or
accessed in an emergency with a minimum chance of dust disturbing CCL areas
below.
I ask since I was informed there are special cleaning and associated
protective procedures in use within CCL, which it was made clear to me,
neither myself as a lay-person nor other non-CCL omninoms may be familiar.
So, I recognize that CCL is itself probably better equipped to do the best
job possible of this.
If that sounds reasonable to CCL, it would be great if this task could be
undertaken sometime in the next week, ie before an HVAC person is scheduled
to return.
See the forwarded message below with regards updates about specific HVAV
fixtures.
Thank you so much CCL & Sudo! and have a great weekend :)
Best,
David

Hi,
The HVAC tech came out on Thursday 9/23 and completed an assessment of the
two fixtures mounted halfway up CCL's north wall, being (a) gas furnace
serving the adjacent disco room and (b) gas space heater serving CCL /
Sudo's room. In addition, I discovered (c) a small modification we need to
make to the furnace serving the ballroom.
*A. Space heater serving CCL/Sudo*:
*This unit was found to be safe & 100% functional; it can be turned on by
activating the switch in the BSL room that has the brown cover plate* (mounted
a bit high up on the wall, but still reachable from a standing position).
In the tech's professional opinion the unit is appropriately sized for the
room and will adequately heat / take the chill out of the room.
Therefore in my own opinion, CCL might consider giving the space heater a
try as an alternative to multiple small electric space heaters that I have
heard have been used in lieu during colder months, due to the increased
life-safety hazard and energy use imposed by multiple small electric units,
and because omni's electrical budget (total available amps) is limited
whereas gas is barely utilized. If the space heater is found to be
effective, I would propose CCL consider stopping the use of multiple
electric heaters.
That said, by design the unit is not attached to a thermostat -- and so
once it is on, it will stay on until it is turned off. This isn't a safety
issue per se, but if left on accidentally, it could lead to energy waste.
Therefore I am recommending the following modest improvements be made:
1. The on/off switch controlling the unit be converted to a timer switch
(e.g, a 30-min-max dial).
This way, the unit will not be accidentally left on, and a timer switch is
an easier / cheaper improvement than adding a thermostat.
2. Lower the switch box a couple feet to a more accessible height (as a
person in a wheelchair cannot reach the present switch location.).
2. The unit's gas valve be lowered to an accessible height, so gas service
to the unit can be easily turned off should the pilot light become
extinguished. At present, a ladder is needed to reach this gas valve.
3. Off-the-shelf CO/explosive gas sensor & a smoke sensor (w/ 10-year
batteries) are mounted to the wall the code-required distance above the
both the space heater and furnace. For the safety of folks working in this
room, imo this should probably have been done a long time ago.
The above suggested improvements would not involve a significant
disturbance of dust, are inexpensive, and are projected to take <2h.
*B. Furnace serving the disco room*:
- It was determined that the blower in this unit needs replacement (keeps
blowing fuses); we are waiting on a cost estimate for this. This fix would
have to be effected by the HVAC tech.
- It was also previously recommended that a separate, small water pump be
installed adjacent to the unit to push condensation down the existing
flexible drip line running to the floor drain. The flexible drip line was
not run at a consistent downward slope, which led to water backing up into
the furnace unit, in turn rusting the bottom of the unit and causing water
damage to the platform visible from below (which presumably, dripped down
onto CCL's workspace). It appears this can be self-installed, and is
anticipated as a low cost improvement.
- The water damage to the platform holding the furnace needs to be assessed
a bit more to see if any structural reinforcement is necessary. Due to the
relatively small quantity of water produced during condensation, I don't
anticipate that the water damage will be all that bad, but we don't want
the platform failing at some point in the future and hurting anyone
beneath. The need for any reinforcement here is TBD.
- I would like CCL to consider whether they as a group might (?) prefer to
take on cleaning this furnace area of accumulated dust (such as wiping it
down etc) prior to additional servicing of the furnace.
The reasons are:
-- The furnace must be able to be accessible for occasional maintenance or
in an emergency, preferably without creating any potential dust headaches
for CCL work going on underneath.
-- I have been informed that there are lab standards for cleaning, with
which lay people / non-CCL volunteers may not be familiar.
-- Although the furnace does not serve CCL, the furnace is in CCL's space,
and it makes sense to me that CCL would participate in the upkeep of
building infrastructure within its space in the interest of collectively
maintaining the building.
*C. Ballroom furnace*:
The ballroom furnace works well, but in the process of trying to assess /
replace the old filters for all these units, I discovered that the filters
are not presently accessible for the ballroom furnace.
The reason is: Studs for the west wall separating the furnace area from the
kitchen were placed literally right up against the filter door. Therefore,
a simple access panel needs to be created in the perpendicular side of the
filter housing, to allow for filter replacement. This fix represents some
light sheet metal work and is not perceived to be a major expense. We are
awaiting an estimate for this.
Having decent air filters in place is of increasing importance due to COVID
and the worsening air quality in CA. We plan to replace with MERV-13
filters to make the omni less friendly to COVID spread for any time when a
furnaces may be in use (MERV 13 isn't HEPA, but does block sneeze-size
droplets along with bacteria etc).
Best,
David
Hi,
Apologies for the late notice, but HVAC professionals from AAPH will be
returning Thursday sometime in the afternoon to further test the large
hanging space heater and the disco room furnace, both of which are adjacent
to CCL’s north wall. In broad terms this assessment is being undertaken in
order to:
a) lower Omni’s monthly insurance costs;
b) assess if the large gas-powered space heater is a safer and more
efficient solution than multiple smaller electric space heaters;
c) restore heat to the disco room if reasonably possible, in order to aid
rentability.
This work will require placing a large ladder beneath these items. *Dust
from these high-up areas may be disturbed, and so we ask that anything
potentially affected at ground-floor level be secured.*
As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
David
Hi sudoers!
Let's try to have an in-person meeting tonight at 6 pm.
We had hardware hacknight last night and I'm excited to get sudo room
re-activated :D
If you have ideas for what you want post-covid sudo room to look like or
just want to see some hackers in person then come on by!
Masks and vaccines required but no proof of vaccine necessary.
We're limiting total number of people in sudo room and CCL to 24.
Hope to see you tonight!
--
marc/juul
tonight some sudoroom memberds will convene in sudoroom to repopulate the space
and discuss interesting projects, brainstorm ideas for moving forward, improve
internet and airflow infrastructure, and etcetera.
This is not a call for more people to show up, because i'm more worried about
having too many people rather than not enough. But I wanted to send out the
email to let people know that it's happening.
i still think that sudoroom members should make use of the space outside of
normal scheduled times, rather than at organized times, in order to avoid too
many people meeting in the space at the same time.
That said, I think it's time to start using the space again, and people will be
wearing masks of course, and we'll be running the new ventilation fan as well
as the fan near the laser cutter.
Hopefully CCL doesn't have a meeting scheduled for tonight as well.

Hi.. I think I’m still a sudoer? So:
I would like to propose that Sudo consense to place a permanent electrical
receptacle near the bottom stair landing (that leads up to ballroom) near
the fridge, to be used by the fridge.
IMO this would be superior to the prior ‘50ft extension cord through the
wall up to another room’ solution that has been used in the past, which
transgresses code and therefore poses recurring headaches during annual
fire inspections.
I expect this work would take appx 2-3h at most, possibly less.
Paying an electrician to do it will I ballpark cost ~$200-$300.
As it happens we presently have an electrician this week conducting minor
repairs around omni, so this would be an opportune time to do this scope of
work as well.
Is there by chance a sudo budget for this sort of thing? let me know if
this task is copacetic with sudo?
Best,
David
Hi all,
Tomorrow 9/16, I hope folks can show up for moving omni’s library (per
Silver’s message below) out of the ballroom mezzanine, and into the
entrance hall mezzanine.
This will help provide a more accessible library as well as facilitate more
professional rentals of the ballroom.
Please come if you can! Xo!

Hi Sudo Room!
I hope you're well. I would like to ask y'all for a favor: Helen, Sarah and
I are wanting to revamp Omni's safer space, conflict resolution, and bans
policies to make omni a safer, saner place to come to work on community
projects. We want to hear about problems related to these policies, and
about what in your view, would make them better.
We are embarking on what we anticipate to be a roughly 3-month process to
improve these policies, and we hoped to start by hearing direct and frank
feedback from all member groups and individuals about how they feel working
in omni with respect to the above policies, and for their opinions on what
about them could be improved.
(You can read about our proposed workshop-style process of engagement on
this wiki page <https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Revisioning>, which also lists
suggested prompts
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Revisioning#Round_1_Discussion_Prompts_.28prop…:>
for
a first discussion.)
*Therefore, we were very much hoping we could be agendized into one of your
group meetings* - or, set up with a separate meeting, if that is better -
to begin to explore these issues and start to gather your frank feedback.
We can meet over zoom/google-meet, or in person (with masks) if that is
better for you. Note that in-person meetings do not need to take place at
omni, and in any of our discussions, any feedback given can anonymized at
your request before it gets aggregated into a bigger omni-wide feedback
document.
Finally, because we want to make this process as inclusive as we can, we
were hoping to hear in particular from voices who do not typically chime in
on omni mailing lists or omni meetings.. (which is to say, a majority of
omninoms!) If your group has someone tasked with communicating with
delegates / rest of omni, we definitely want to hear from them too -- but
ideally, also from others in your collective.
If you are agreeable, can you please let us know at your earliest
opportunity when might be a good time to discuss these issues with us?
Thank you so much for your time, and if possible, please reply-all to at
least helen, sarah and me if you can.
Best,
David
Have any of you checked out https://tildeverse.org? It seems like there would be a lot of overlap between “pubnix” community and hacker space communities.
