Hi Sudo Room,
CCL is looking to donate our large liquid handling robot in order to free
up some space in the lab. Would you or anyone you know like it? It's
important that any organization that CCL transfers the robot to is also a
501(c)(3).
Here are some specifics about the robot:
Capabilities:
- Liquid handling
- Freezer with automated door
- With a little TLC, could carry out many basic biology assays and
operations, like plate incubation, PCR, SDS-PAGE, and centrifugation.
The robot includes:
- Robot frame made of 80/20 aluminum bars
- A gantry with a pipette mounted to it that can move in 3-dimensions, plus
actuate the pipette aspirator. All dimensions have limit switches on them
- A Smoothieboard <http://smoothieware.org/smoothieboard> to run the
3D-movement motors
- An Arduino Uno to manage electrical relays
- A Raspberry Pi 2 that can be used to communicate to the Smoothieboard and
Arduino
- A top-loading freezer for storing samples. Parts included to automate
opening and closing the freezer.
- Custom-built table with deckspace for robot operation and storage space
underneath
- Various pieces of labware, including a microcentrifuge and custom-cut
acrylic to allow the robot to manipulate petri plates
State:
- Robot moves in 3 dimensions. The motor for the pipette jogger has been
shown to work, but is currently not connected
- All of the other, non-movement components are included but not assembled
- No software provided, but we can definitely share the documents we've
generated as we learned how to use it
I've attached a few pictures and a short video
<https://photos.app.goo.gl/GhuH4GS2qNGuR58M9> of the robot picking up a
pipette tip and ejecting it to help get an idea of the way it operates.
That said, the robot is very hacker-friendly, so alternative uses are
doable.
If you've got any leads, reach out to me, the CCL Board, or the CCL Space
Committee. Hoping to find a good home for this robot!

Hi everyone,
After I asked our insurance agent why our property insurance will be
going up $800 this year, she sent the following reply from the company:
/On a side note, it appears the condition of this building has
drastically deteriorated over the years. The current condition of the
building is below average and is unacceptable. We will remain on this
account for one more year but please be advised that we will be setting
this account up for nonrenewal. If the insured is able to provide proof
of building updates and proper maintenance, we may be able to review
this account again for eligibility. In additional, updates would allow
us to approach other carriers for alternate quotes./
*If we lose our property insurance and are unable to find another
company (unlikely and, if we can, the rate will be high), we will
probably not be able to refinance and we will lose the building. *
**
Our agent thinks they are basing their evaluation of the building
condition only upon seeing the exterior, possibly on google street view.
That is why they have asked to do the inspection that I have already
told you about. I think that will happen on Thursday 2/13
We need all hands on deck over the next 2 weeks to make the building
look as good as possible, inside and out. That means:
- fire safety equipment all in working order, NO clutter, no fire hazards
- condition of any wiring as good as possible
- exterior condition as good as possible, no graffiti, clean, EH windows
fixed and window sills repaired and painted, new awning up
- any roof trouble spots fixed
- general interior condition should look as good and safe as possible,
general painting where needed, everything clean and in working order
- fixing anything that could be seen as a safety hazard.
I propose an emergency meeting tomorrow evening at 7pm to get organized
to tackle these things.
Laura
We then translated the aligned genome and found that these inserts are present
in all Wuhan 2019-nCoV viruses except the 2019-nCoV virus of Bat as a host
[Fig.S4]. Intrigued by the 4 highly conserved inserts unique to 2019-nCoV we
wanted to understand their origin. For this purpose, we used the 2019-nCoV
local alignment with each insert as query against all virus genomes and
considered hits with 100% sequence coverage.
Surprisingly, each of the four inserts aligned with short segments of the Human
Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) proteins. The amino acid positions of the
inserts in 2019-nCoV and the corresponding residues in HIV-1 gp120 and HIV-1
Gag are shown in Table 1. The first 3 inserts (insert 1,2 and 3) aligned to
short segments of amino acid residues in HIV-1 gp120. The insert 4 aligned to
HIV-1 Gag. The insert 1 (6 amino acid residues) and insert 2 (6 amino acid
residues) in the spike glycoprotein of 2019-nCoV are 100% identical to the
residues mapped to HIV-1 gp120. The insert 3 (12 amino acid residues) in 2019-
nCoV maps to HIV-1 gp120 with gaps [see Table 1]. The insert 4 (8 amino acid
residues) maps to HIV-1 Gag with gaps.
Although, the 4 inserts represent discontiguous short stretches of amino acids
in spike glycoprotein of 2019-nCoV, the fact that all three of them share amino
acid identity or similarity with HIV-1 gp120 and HIV-1 Gag (among all annotated
virus proteins) suggests that this is not a random fortuitous finding. In other
words, one may sporadically expect a fortuitous match for a stretch of 6-12
contiguous amino acid residues in an unrelated protein. However, it is
unlikely that all 4 inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike glycoprotein fortuitously
match with 2 key structural proteins of an unrelated virus (HIV-1).

Hi Zac, right now the best time to meet others at Sudo is Tuesday
night hardware hack night. It seems to be the only regularly occurring
event right now. If you want to find people to talk about software,
you might try the sudo-discuss mailing list.
there's a payphone mounted on the front of Omni, by the front door.
When we installed it, it was working and when you would lift the receiver, it
would connect to the asterisk server in the rack, and say "Press 1 to connect
to Sudoroom, press 2 to connect to Counter Culture Labs..."
and there were VOIP phones in CCL and sudoroom that would ring when it was
used.... I wanted to set it up so the phones could beep the door open while
someone was on the line.
Presently the receiver on the payphone is broken, but we have a replacement. I
am willing to repair the phone and get the system back up and running, if
someone with software skills is interested in helping tune up the asterisk
server and configure the phones indoors.
We also need to clean the graffiti off of the phone. This needs to happen ASAP
as there will be a building inspection by the insurance company and we need the
outdoors to look good.
The alternative is to remove the payphone and maybe "someday" put it back but
that would be a step back.
Is anyone interested in collaborating on this? Obviously the priority is to
clean the appearance of the phone and replace the handset, so that it doesn't
detract from the appearance of the building.
-jake
FYI - it would be great to have a new sudo room delegate! Anyone interested?
An overview of what's entailed: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Omni_Delegate
In the past, sudo room has stepped up when the larger Omni collective has
lost its path, so to speak, toward stewarding an actual commons - wherein
decisions are made collectively, and delegates are actually delegate
representatives in a spokescouncil.
Omni is slipping, and at the risk of a community group that is intimately
tied with our very foundations. Please step up - we need all sorts of help
right now:
- Noise complaints and issues with the building manager across the way on
48th
- Property insurance may pull out of insuring us given dilapidated state of
building
- Dilapidated state of building, general
- Desperate need for funding / support for refinance before our mortage
balloon payment in Jan 2022
- Upcoming fire inspection (Feb/March), property insurance inspection
(2/13), and property tax exemption (county) inspection (Feb)
- Upcoming property tax exemption app annual filing (massive amounts of
work)
- Stalled kitchen renovation (not enough funds)
Reply here to this thread, talk with people, join an upcoming meeting or
work party, or reach out privately if you'd like to help!
Love and solidarity,
Jenny

There are significant problems with this "decision," and since it did not
acquire consensus in actuality (I blocked as remote sudo room delegate on
the pad), I must speak up to revert this statement.
Apologies, Laura, as I know very well how much effort you've put into this
issue and attempting to resolve it.
A) This proposal was never submitted to the Delegate's List a week prior to
its decision-making process, as is protocol, but rather brought up suddenly
at a Delegate's Meeting amidst a haze of elicited fear, uncertainty, and
distrust by less-than-informed community members.
B) All proposals must be submitted to consensus at least a week prior to
being consensed upon, so that delegates have time to confer with their
collectives. Just a friendly reminder: we are a collective of collectives
experimenting with radical participatory democracy - not a standard
nonprofit board in which representatives make uninformed decisions on
behalf of uninformed groups.
C) Not one of the basement events actually run by SPAZ has elicited any
noise complaints - specifically, the events that have elicited noise
complaints were SKAST (third-party, midsummer), Putivuelta (third-party,
December) and FYE (December, and somehow exempt from this decision?).
I am not trying to come at anyone - just merely clarifying the actual facts
of the matter.
Given that none of our actual processes for decision-making and
self-governance were employed, this decision is, imho, moot. Nevertheless,
SPAZ decided to hold off on any upcoming events (to the detriment of their
own expenses for storage and equipment maintenance, despite events still
being approved such as FYE's late-night event that will utilize SPAZ
soundsystem on Friday), I call a hard block and look forward to having
actual discussions with our respective collectives and seeing you all at
the next delegate's meeting on Thursday to clear up the very many
miscommunications clearly at play here. It is also likely that SPAZ will be
ready to submit their membership application at this meeting - I will
submit it on their behalf in advance of the meeting. Because that is, in
fact, how we operate.

Hey all,
First off I wanted to apologize to Rayc, Sierk, Louis, and Jenny for acting
out too much of my frustration in sudo earlier tonight. I was being
sensitive about the state of the space and should have been more thoughtful
in responding instead of reacting!
Wanted to clarify that Ian gave me a call back and we are going to work
together tomorrow night at the hardware hack night to sort out the pile of
PC equipment that is in the entrance of the space. The plan is to dismantle
the pile and redistribute the pieces appropriately as soon as possible,
with an ultimate deadline of next Monday.
I'll be helping to do a run to Tech Exchange both for donations and for
e-waste recycling.
Take care all,
Matt

Hey all,
I wanted to reach out for some feedback. Seeking folks who would want to
facilitate or participate in a men's group.
I've previously participated in small groups like this and found them
beneficial for various reasons. I would like to see if folks have had
similar or different experiences.
The way I'm thinking about this would culminate in something like a regular
meeting for men in the sudo room community to discuss relevant issues
including those of identity, oppression, privilege, patriarchy, gender,
sexuality, stereotypes, safe space, and mutual support.
This may not be the best or even a viable path to approach these topics,
but I wanted to throw it out there to see if there is any interest.
Thanks,
Matt
Hi,
It would be helpful to Omni’s well-being to hack together an array of dBA
readers for monitoring ambient sound levels only around omni’s roof
perimeter. Not this would not record anything other than dB (ambient sound
levels).
Periodic readings from around the perimeter would be continually logged and
ignored until there is a noise complaint, at which point we could review
and determine if omni or some exterior noise has indeed quantifiably
transgressed the time-weighted ambient noise ceiling for our neighborhood /
zone.
Handheld meters are cheap, but ideally what we want is a system monitoring
from multiple points.
I’d anyone has capacity to hack on this with me, preferably with hardware
hacking skills that’s be great - lmk -

Hi Sudoers,
first of all, happy holidays!!
I've been at the space two or three times but I'm still pretty new here...
I was wondering, what's the state of the big red laser cutter?
I'm working on a project for which I need to cut 5 mm plywood sheets with
some rather intricate patterns.
I've used a rather similar laser at the UC Berkeley before.
Anything I should know before using it?
If it's operational, is there anyone around who could give me a quick
walk-through at some point?
If it's not operational, I'd be happy to help to get it up and running ...
Cheers,
Michael

could accomplish such things collaborating, continue getting rid of unused
stuff and material, mount the nessasary tools to the benches, organize
benches, finish building furniture, etc.

So this is what happened: In the late winter/early spring of 2017, Psi
Vesely was angry because I wanted to sleep instead of have sex. After
saying no at least three times, I fell asleep, then woke up from REM sleep
because I could not breathe, and discovered that I could not breathe
because Psi had their hands wrapped around my neck.
For a while, they claimed not to remember, then I got an apology. Very
recently, however (winter 2019) they claimed to remember me being awake
during the incident. They claimed not to remember me saying "no," or "I am
falling asleep now," but they do have some recollection of thinking that
choking me "might turn [me] on again." Calling them in by myself has not
been working (they get angry, gaslight, and act insulted), and at this
point it causes me a considerable amount of anxiety. They claim I am the
only person this has happened with, but I am not sure at this point that I
believe that, for reasons beyond just this one conversation. At least for a
little while, I would prefer not to see them at the omni, and am also
calling on other community members who know and care about Psi to maybe put
in some (hopefully) more effective emotional labor if they feel so
inclined. I have known them a long time, and it has been complicated. I
hope they will listen to someone other that me.

This is a tiny house project that I designed and completed in Nov 2019 to
provide housing for a homeless couple in Marin. This stationary tiny house
measures 12 x 10 feet and is 15 feet tall. It features a large loft, a deck
built from reclaimed redwood and foam panel insulation. Total cost to build
was $3500 for materials with labor donated by my non-profit. The design
follows guidelines for tiny house construction from AB 2176 - housing
crisis emergency shelter, where the primary use is for personal space with
facilities for cooking and personal hygiene located elsewhere on site.
To deal with regulations concerning zoning, building and safety, and local
objections relating to affordable housing, this tiny house is located on a
"sanctuary site" which is a parcel of land that has been dedicated in
perpetuity for conservation and sanctuary purposes. Federal RLUIPA laws
apply that supersede local regulations and objections from neighbors. As
far as I know, RLUIPA is the strongest defense against inhumane housing
regulations that are the primary cause of the housing crisis. RLUIPA has
been applied successfully to construct tiny house villages over the
objections of neighbors and local planning authorities.
My non-profit is planning to construct more tiny houses at our sanctuary
site in Marin as well as other sites in California. The design will be
updated to facilitate mass production of tiny houses through the use of
components fabricated with a CNC router. I am currently working on the next
version of the design that includes components from the wikihouse project
that will enable rapid assembly while minimizing cost and waste material.

Unhoused folks who have been traumatized and brutalized by the city of
Oakland, whose encampments have been destroyed, have moved onto Oscar Grant
Plaza asking "Where do we go?" Where are the millions that were set aside
to upgrade, not evict encampments and to build permanent housing for the
homeless?
OGP 14th/Bdwy right NOW
Cost to build this tiny house was $3500 for materials, labor was donated by
my non-profit. This tiny house follows the guidelines of AB 2176 for
"housing crisis emergency shelter". Having 120 square feet and being no
taller than 15 ft above ground level, no permits are required. As part of a
workaround for dealing with occupancy issues, zoning laws and unpleasant
nimby neighbors in Marin County, it is located on a "sanctuary site" -
where federal religious land use laws apply under RLUIPA.
This tiny house provides shelter for a young couple who grew up in Marin,
obtained college degrees and are both employed in Marin. After a series of
rent increases on a small room they were renting which was substandard,
they could not find any other affordable options in Marin and started
living out of a car.
The plans are open source - I am working on completing a sketchup model
before the plans go up on github. Since my non-profit wishes to construct
more of these shelters in Marin and other locations in California, I am
working on the next version of the design which incorporates elements from
wikihouse and will utilize a cnc router for construction.

I've finally come around to realizing that I'm just not
going to finish a couple electronics projects I set aside a
few years back. If anyone is interested in post-war tube
audio, I have, free to a good home:
- Dynaco PAS-2 preamplifier
- Dynaco Stereo 70 power amplifier
All the bits are there, including tube complements, and I've
had both working quite well in the past. The selenium
rectifiers have been replaced, but I started, but did not
finish, replacing the power supplies and can capacitors with
modern components. They'll need that work finished before
they can play music.
I should mention that the power amplifier is heavy. If
you're interested, you'll probably want to put them in a
vehicle: car, truck, bicycle trailer, &c.
I should also mention that while these could be great first
projects in tube audio, anyone working on these kinds of
circuits should be mindful of electrical safety. Voltages
are high, and power supply capacitors can store dangerous
amounts of energy. I have a homemade capacitor discharge
tool if you want it.
Relatedly, I also have a TubeDebot 6L6 kit amplifier in good
working order, also free to a good home. I'm not sure if
the model is exactly the same, but here's the manufacturer's
current page:
https://tubedepot.com/products/model-16ls-stereo-integrated-tube-amplifier
It's a neat little amp, quite powerful, takes line-level
input, and has a built-in volume knob, so you can use it for
phones or computers or MP3 players without preamplification.
I was gifted a smaller TubeDepot ready-made amp some time
after buying the kit, which is why the kit amp sits quiet.
Special thanks to Jake for encouraging me to mention on this
list. I'm not currently subscribed to sudo-discuss, so
please make sure to copy me.

Hi all,
Just came by Sudo Room tonight, and I met a guy named Zirk there (pretty
sure I'm not spelling his name right, but that's how it sounded). He knew
his way around, and told to email you all.
I'm just looking for someone who knows how to repair 3D printers,
specifically the SLA kind. Can anyone help, or can point me to someone who
can?
Best,
Koz

Subject: [sudo-discuss] E-waste Program reminder & request
Date: Sat, Nov 2, 2019 10:24 PM
If anyone could please help with this task, it's a relatively simple one:
Omni's recycling service provider is CiviCorps, an awesome local org. They
provide FREE ewaste pickup, but the service has to be requested and things
to be picked up itemized.
The online form is here:
http://www.civicorpsrecycling.org/ewaste/
Is anyone able to help take this on sometime in the next few weeks? Please
include the large TV located on the Entrance Hall stage.

Hi everyone, I know we discussed at the last meeting Gwen slamming the door
in someone's face when she asked to use the bathroom. There was another
incident that went down the exact same way a few days ago, and tonight
there was another that prompted me to ask Gwen to leave.
I was sitting in the small classroom and heard Gwen answer the door, and
shouted "it's 50,000 a month, are you going to help pay for this place,
huh, are you" in a very aggressive tone, but she allowed the person in to
use the bathroom. As the person was leaving, Gwen shouted "YOU'RE WELCOME"
repeatedly in an extremely snotty tone. I heard this myself, confirmed I'd
heard correctly with the woman who used the bathroom, and then asked Gwen
to leave. To her credit, she simply said "no problem" and left immediately.
This is a completely unacceptable way to answer the door at Omni. I'm not
sure if Gwen if a sudo member, but I strongly feel whichever collective she
belongs to should call her in and have a conversation about this. At the
same time, I feel we have the responsibility not to pretend this problem is
limited to Gwen and at the next sudo meeting we need to brainstorm ways to
reform the door policy to be more inclusive.
Hi sudoroom,
Everything going well on your ends? I haven't been able to keep up to
date with the happenings of the collective.
Anyways, I'm writing because I recently stumbled upon on a blockchain
system which allows for trust-less enforcement of decentralized
organization policies. I found the project intriguing and wanted to run
this past the community to see what people think about the structure.
Using a set of voting classes and judicial review classes written into
contracts, the network they built provides transparent governance for
the viewing and participation in important decision for open groups.
The blockchain network in question is called Aragon. Linked is the white
paper for reference: https://github.com/aragon/whitepaper
Also written in JavaScript/Solidity, right up sudoroom's alley.
Let me know what you guys think.

Kristine,
I will forward your email to the Sudo room makerspace in oakland, they
might want them for their computer lab.

Sudoers!
Free computers, is anyone at the Omni interested in them? Presumably they
are reasonably powerful if they were used for CAD. [see copied email]

With great power comes great responsibility.

Hi all,
Today we are going to replace the toilet in the wheelchair bathroom and
also tile the area behind the toilet. The whole bathroom will be out of
service for at least a couple hours. Sorry for the inconvenience!
