we picked up those tables that were on craigslist a few days ago.
there are 5 small ones and 3 large ones. they are very strong, and have
places for outlets so we can get rid of the extension cords.
if we cut two of the long ones length-wise to be the same width as the
short ones, then we can have the same exact table situation we have going
on right now but with much stronger and nicer tables.

With great power comes great responsibility.
I have been working on this for a while now, https://civilpedia.org/s/
It's designed to be a website for everyone, where anyone can teach anyone
else anything. My hope is that we can decentralize science and learning, so
more people can have that opportunity in life regardless of how small the
Ivory towers are.
You can make groups, pages, discussions or IRC channels, and subscribe to
any of those to have notifications pushed to your email or phone.
It still has some bugs (tracked here:

around with it and let me know what you think!

You may have heard by now that we're expecting high winds tomorrow and
Thursday, and PG&E is planning to shut down power across large parts of the
Bay Area.
On the last map I was able to check, the Omni was supposed to be well
outside the area of power cuts, but that could of course change with the
weather...
Who actually has physical keys to the Omni, and could let people in if the
battery on the front door keycard mechanism runs out?
Patrik
Would it be possible to increase the file size of emails that can be sent
to the discus list for pseudo room? Sometimes it is necessary to attach a
couple of images to an email. the current limitation is too small to allow
me to attach 3 photos.
Thanks
Let us rejoice!
Thank you, Michael, for demonstrating such amazing commons stewardship.

Subject: Toilet seat in Sudo/CCL area...
To: Jenny Ryan <jenny(a)jennyryan.net>
Hi Jenny,
FYI. I replaced the grotty/broken wooden toilet seat in Sudo/CCL area with
a clean/sanitized excellent condition plastic toilet seat that I had extra.
M i c h a e l A r e n t
Counter Culture Labs
we cannot use the pick-and-place machine until the cover has been rebuilt
or is on a sturdier table. I have tested opening the heavy wooded cover,
And the hinges for it that are bolted into the shelf table, are starting to
tear and giveaway. the cover is also lifting up particle board platform.
The machine is sitting on as well.
I highly recommend that we do not attempt to use the pick-and-place machine
until we have a solid stable environment for it. Instead of a shelf unit.
Thank you Robert.
I have a potentially prize winning idea, but I need your help...
As you might know, I've been teaching Agar Art workshops at CCL - painting
with colored bacteria! Next session is this coming Monday
<https://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/264878488/>. The
American Society for Microbiology is holding a yearly Agar Art Contest
<https://www.asm.org/Events/2019-ASM-Agar-Art-Contest/Home> that we can
submit some of our best work to.
My idea is to embed a little LED circuit *in the agar* in a Petri plate,
light up a UV LED, and then trace the circuit on top of the agar in
fluorescent E. coli!
Here's the part I need your help with... we'll need to experiment a bit
with different circuit implementations to figure out what works best. I can
easily solder a little "throwie" circuit myself, but I don't think I'll
have time to go through half a dozen designs to see what works best (or at
all). So ideally I'd love to partner up with somebody why can crank out a
couple circuit versions while I focus on the wetlab side. You'll get full
share of the credit and any prize money of course.
A couple complications:
- I would love to be able to autoclave the circuit before embedding it
in agar, to eliminate any possible contamination. This involves heating to
121C/250F for 20 minutes under steam. Not sure which materials will stand
up to that (batteries? plastic LED?)
- The normal E. coli growth medium is quite conductive. We should be
able to use a medium without salt, but it will likely still have some
conductivity. We could try coat the entire circuit in clear epoxy to
insulate it though.
- The circuit will still need to give off enough light after been
embedded in agar for several days. Coin cell throwies do last a couple
days, but UV LEDs are a bit more power hungry, so perhaps we could try a
AAA?
- Having the UV LED on continuously may not be healthy for the bacteria
growing on top, so we may need to include a Reed switch or some other
mechanism to turn the LED on remotely.
- More complicated circuits = extra awesomesauce! Can we build a circuit
that measures the pH in the agar under an acid producing bacteria? Create a
grid of electrodes that affects the growth of bacteria growing on top of it?
- Ideally, the whole circuit would fit inside a 10cm Petri dish - let's
call it 9.5cm diameter, and no more than about 1cm in height. If necessary,
we do have access to larger and deeper Petri dishes though.
Patrik

I've been talking about epoxying the Sudoroom floor all year, which
needs to happen during the dry season because humidity makes
everything take way longer. It just rained today and winter is coming
fast. Meanwhile I've had a couple big surprises in my personal life
that need attention.
So I'm admitting defeat. I can't do it this year. If nobody else wants
to lead the Great Sudo Rebase, I will try again in summer 2020.
Hi,
I am a newcomer and I'm really enjoying my participation. I am working on
setting up a computer for the Lulzbot 3D printer. With Jake's help I got a
fresh version of Mint installed and a recommended Lulzbot Cura software
package.

Need some help solving errors in the Cura installation.
I've been coming Tuesday night and have availability for other times. Let
me know if you can help move the 3D printer forward.
Please email me directly as I don't have a login or password for your
lists.

To all concerned,
Spaz has been throwing a lot of parties at Omni Commons, and Sudoroom
has been sponsoring them. As a member collective, our sponsorship
gives them the privilege of bypassing many rules and oversight of
Omni's commons working group.
But at last night's Sudoroom meeting there were many concerns about
continuing to sponsor these parties, especially the most recent party
on Saturday night 8/31:
* Loud noise after hours (11pm on friday/saturday) should be confined
to the basement, but there was amplified music in the entrance hall
all night. It undoubtedly disturbed our neighbors, which puts the
whole building at risk. In the future someone will need to do outside
sound checks with a proper sound meter througout the evening, keep
logs, and be ready to share them
* The relationship between SPAZ and SKAST was not clear - at first we
thought SKAST was just curating an art show at a SPAZ party, but now
it looks like SKAST was actually throwing the whole party, which meant
the people running the party didn't have a sense of ownership or even
know what the rules were. This is a bad idea and also an abuse of our
sponsorship.
* There was nobody clearly responsible or able to keep control of the
crowd - Joe was a point person who was trying to tell people to turn
down the music but everybody ignored him
* There was alcohol flowing freely, but they did not have an ABC
license or insurance for this. Even when the party is BYOB we are
still legally responsible for the presence of alcohol.
* There were probably too many people. You need to limit attendance by
counting in and out guests
* The party leaked into the rest of the building, and many people were
going into non-party areas such as the ballroom, sudo/ccl & upstairs.
This creates more risk and more mess for everybody to clean up.
* People left a huge mess - even after several Omni volunteers working
*ALL NIGHT* it was still not clean enough for an event the next day.
The activists who got up early Sunday for a nonviolent direct action
training, preparing for next week's climate strike, did not have the
best experience at Omni and they should not need to deal with the
consequences of someone else's drunken benders.
* Communication with others at Omni has been poor. If spaz people
can't make it to the Commons WG meeting, then you all need to figure
out a better time to talk to each other (e.g. not 5 pm when people are
just getting off work).
* Omni recently forced out a member collective, in part because of
similar concerns about unpermitted boozy events. If we don't hold
every group to the same standards, then we are hypocrites.
We love spaz, but we cannot keep sponsoring these events until
everybody has met in person and resolved these issues.
Thanks,
Yar on behalf of Sudoroom
the ventilation for the new laser cutter is not cutting it
it's stinking up the room & ballroom & making me nauseous
i told the guy using it but he didnt seem to care
Hey all,
It's been a while since we've had a real Sudoroom meeting. There are a
couple of pending Omni proposals & issues that need our attention:
* Almost 6 months ago, Helen proposed a process for Omni delegates to
resolve conflicts and remove members from working groups. We owe it to
her to finally make a clear decision on this.
* Omni's figurehead corporate entity needs 3 new officers (president,
secretary, treasurer) and we need more volunteers for these roles
* We need to figure out new rules for giving Omni keycards to people -
I proposed letting members vouch for non-members, which doesn't seem
fully workable, but the discussion must continue
We could meet this week 8/21, next week 8/28, or the week after 9/4. I
know more people will be in town 9/4 but the downside is that we have
a delegates meeting the very next day. If anybody has blocking
concerns for any of these proposals it would be rude to wait until 9/4
to voice them.
Thanks,
Yar
last night there was a constant beeping sound in sudoroom
it was traced to a UPS in the server rack.
the type of UPS was the oldest cheapest kind with no buttons or functions, it
didn't even have USB or any way to notify equipment that power had failed...
so I unplugged it from the wall for a second and everything went down, so i
followed through and removed it from the system and plugged everything back in.
After a while of still no internet, i realized that the router PC was not on
because it's a dell desktop that has not been configured to turn itself on
after being plugged in. I pressed the power button and everything went back to
normal.
Of course i'm sure that dell is "temporary" but we should probably either boot
it into BIOS mode and set it to "auto power on after AC loss" or take a safety
pin and short the PS_ON# green wire (possibly a different color since it's a
dell) to black (ground) to force the power supply ON no matter what.
oh and also a sign of some sort.
to be clear: the UPS was not working and wasn't hooked up properly anyway. A
UPS needs to tell the computers it's powering that the power has failed so they
can safely shut down before power goes off.

We of the Booking WG are not feeling like we are getting the cooperation
of SPAZ or SUDO in resolving the outstanding issues regarding SPAZ
holding events in the basement.
Our understanding is that if Sudo is sponsoring SPAZ events
then a representative of Sudo needs to at least be present at those SPAZ events
and should be involved in putting the event on, This has not been happening.
In addition there is BYOB alcohol at SPAZ event without any ABC permits
or any insurance; there has been OC property destruction at several events:
there have not been sufficient noise reduction procedures at the last event and
people in the neighboring building have been kept up at 1:30am; and the
SpaZ events have left the premises strewn with beer bottles and trash without
having made a cleaning deposit for their rental.
In addition SPAZ has assumed the authority to extend their SUDO sponsorship
to others e.g. Chai CAT and SKAT.
In order to allow SKAST to take place on 8/31 booking wg must insist that
there is better noise/crowd control, much better security/supervision, no
alcohol, proper insurance, and trash removal guananteed by a cleaning deposit.
The tone of frustration apparent in this post is not the way booking would want to
communicate with our colleagues but comes with not having had a chance to
work with sudo or SPAZ f2f for weeks. Hopefully with such meetings we can
get clear on some of these basics and work together for the good of OC.

We went through making a contract for the SKAST art show on the 31st and also discussed the 'We Are the Ones' event for Sep 7th, which wants to utilize the ballroom during the day and move to the basement for an afterparty, but is only offering $200-300. Lukas and I will run point on these (and other events of relevance to the basement/SPAZ community) together while he's getting the hang of our processes and is able to attend some of the upcoming f2f meetings.

>
> Re: "market rate" for the basement - I'm still somewhat confused by this request and why they're not interested in renting the ballroom instead. But anyway - I think Robb's right-on with that price point, considering the risk involved of any late-night event. It's well nigh impossible to find any venue that will go past 2am, much less one for under $100/hr. We should do some more comparative research, though. Two sites that host local rentable venue listings are https://peerspace.com <https://peerspace.com/> and https://evenues.com <https://evenues.com/> - factor in that the 1450 square footage of the basement hall is cut down by Village/CCL storage on one side and Phat Beets/soundsystem storage on the other, plus the lack of amenities we provide, and the occupancy cap of 49 people... it doesn't quite compare to, say, 1000 sqft at ground level with nice floors and empty-canvass-ness. But try and book anything shiny past 2am and we're about it.
>
> This request also runs into the issue of whether they want to use the SPAZ soundsystem (in which case let's have Lukas join this conversation), how much they intend things to be virtually "plug and play", etc. I would be willing to update the website next week, at the least we should say something about needing to work with SPAZ folks for basement late-night events (considering the many factors that complicate things here, not just the sound system but also security, noise, safety, lighting, etc).

Subject: [omni-consensus] lease agreements proposal version 3.4
To: <consensus(a)lists.omnicommons.org>
A collective may find itself in financial difficulties. If a
collective cannot meet its rent because of a cash-flow problem or some
other glitch, it should work out the problem with the finance
committee.
But a deeper problem may require a collective to change the terms of
its lease or fiscal sponsorship. This could be a financial problem, or
it could be some other issue such as the collective's use of its
space. If a collective needs to change the terms of any part of its
lease it must come to the Delegates' Assembly with a proposal for new
terms within one month. Even if the collective is unable to pay its
rent, it retains full membership in the OMNI for three months, as long
as a solution to the problem is being negotiated in good faith.
The three-month clock starts ticking as soon as the collective comes
to a Delegates' Assembly, or fails to meet the terms of its agreement,
whichever comes first.
It is the responsibility of a collective with a problem to bring it to
the Delegates' Assembly.
The delegates must prioritize finding a way to retain a current member
collective.

Hi Sudoers,
There is now a Secure Scuttlebutt (SSB) node running at Sudo Room, on the space.local server. The node's id is
@U0uq5om3k51u4Eokk0CLYOE61cWSyY9Ex6zNj4lhTLE=.ed25519 and its nickname is "sudoer".
If you run SSB (e.g. Patchwork) and are connected to the WiFi or wired network here, you will see @sudoer and can follow it. It will automatically follow you. This means you can get connected to the main SSB network just by running SSB while on the LAN here.
If you have an account on the space.local server, you can access @sudoer's web-based UI ("patchfoo"), to browse the SSB network from the node's perspective, and post as the node - including following/unfollowing contacts and updating its profile description. To do so, ssh to space.local with option `-L 8027:localhost:8027` and then open http://localhost:8027/ in your local browser.
This node is not currently running as a "pub", but if there is interest in that, I could try to make that happen.
If you would like to help administer this node, let me know and I can authorize your SSH key for its user account. It is currently co-administered by noffle <sww(a)eight45.net>.

someone made a "computer" by taping a laptop motherboard onto the back of an
old LCD monitor and set it up on the main tables of sudoroom.
The duct tape has loosened and the whole thing has fallen apart. But I know
that someone put a bunch of work into this thing and they probably want to take
it or some of the parts.
Does anyone know who made it?

A few of us will be meeting at Omni 7pm tonight to talk about putting
solar panels on the roof. We'll probably be in the entrance hall
mezzanine.
A friend reached out to me asking if Omni may be interested on a display.
Pasting below part of the message with the details:
“Daniel. I am wanting to get rid of my 2008 55" Vizo 1080p flat screen. Was
thinking this could find use at The Omni. If you know someone with a truck
they can pick it up at my place this coming weekend. Works fine except for
every now and then a couple of lines appear mostly on the left side, but
they dont appear all of the time.”
Thank you, and please let me know.

Hi sudodiscuss!
I was hoping to come by to use the laser cutter and was having trouble
finding any information about it on the sudoroom wiki.
I'd heard there was a new laser cutter set up there now too so just was
wondering about the status/information of both machines?
I've used a few different laser cutters pretty extensively in the past but
each one can be finicky in its own way so was wondering if anyone could
point me towards any resources, or would be able to help me out in the next
few days?
Was hoping to finish up a project in time for camp next week :)
Thanks!

Ok Rich said he will be "outside at 7", I believe this means sudo room but
I've written back to confirm.
His email address is rich.gporter(a)gmail.com if you need to get in contact.
I need to pick some one up before sudo room and will try to be there around
then. Don't hold up for me if I don't make it in time though.

Hello!
This is Christine Hodges. You may or may not know me from the circles I
move in: I'm a former tech worker, hackerspace user, meetup.com
participant, effective altruism/rationality community adjacent, member of
First Church Berkeley UCC.
So I got a new job teaching technology at an elementary school in Oakland.
I'd like to give my 230+ Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade
students great, hands-on learning opportunities with electronics and
coding: a STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math). I
have a plan to introduce electronics concepts, bring in physical computing,
then tie that to software coding later in the school year. But I want
students to have hands-on experiences first. This requires stuff like LEDs,
batteries, electronic building blocks, etc.
Thus I started a series of DonorsChoose.org projects to fundraise for these
class materials.
And guess what: some anonymous donors will match every donation so it cuts
the cost in half! Yay! I think this matching will be available all this
week, maybe longer, but I don't know.
And now I'm asking you if you could please chip in while I have this
matching offer. A $10 donation becomes $20. $100 becomes $200!
3 projects posted, many minds educated...
1) The #1 priority project is the basic electronics components and only
needs $339 to be fully funded:
https://www.donorschoose.org/project/intro-to-circuits/4347772/
2) Electronic building blocks gets students creating at a higher level of
abstraction - needs $221
https://www.donorschoose.org/project/electronic-building-blocks/4348639/
3) Makey Makey devices bridge hardware to software - needs $385
https://www.donorschoose.org/project/from-circuits-to-coding-with-makey-mak…
Thanks so much for your participation! Feel free to pass this along to
potentially interested people.

Hi Sudoroom,
I'm Chris, and I'm helping out with Pybay 2019. We're having a maker event the night of August 17 and I thought of SudoRoom. Pybay is a community-driven python conference in San Francisco, August 17 - 18. This year keynote speakers include Peter Norvig, Director of Research at Google, and Raymond Hettinger, cPython core dev. Other notable speakers include Bryan Siepert from Adafruit and Rachel Thomas, cofounder of fast.ai.
The maker event will let people showcase their homemade hardware/IOT projects. I'm interested in talking with any members who would like a table. The robot arm and sudo mesh projects both looked really interesting. Also, I do have some free tickets for nonprofits. So if either People's Open Network or Sudoroom are interested in having a table as a group, I would have a few free tickets available.
Sincerely,
Chris Matthews

One of the things that makes PyBay such a fun conference is the hallway track, where casual sharing with another amazing developer inspires novelty solutions to problems, useful open-source contributions, or a new friendship.

Hey guys,.
I did a basic mopping of Sudoroom last night (without moving furniture),
and was able to remove a lot of silt dust that was everywhere. I also only
used water, as my objective was to capture dust.
There is still big particles the mopping could not pick up; yet sweeping
will resolve. I also had to circulate five mop buckets because it was so
dusty. It also had taken about an hour and a half.
It would be good in the near future to have a Sudo Mop party day, with
volunteers, to help move furniture back and forth, and have at least 2-3
people mopping. This would be a very effective way to bring all of the dust
to an optimal minimum.
The time would be shortened with another mopped as well :-).
I'll spear head a near future day when I less busy.
Cheers.
Thanks to a huge recent donation, sudoroom now has a TON of materials for
hosting electronics soldering workshops for newbies wanting to build arduinos,
mignonette games http://www.mignonette-game.com and
TV-B-Gones http://www.mignonette-game.com and many other cool kits!
The donation included a ton of snips (we were almost out of them!) and
soldering irons and probably a lot of other important things.
I already nominally host "Hardware Hacking Tuesdays" and I am totally down to
support people wanting to build these kits on those tuesdays, but I think we
should consider scheduling weekly events just focused on building kits, if
people have the time to dedicate to hosting such events.
Either way, anyone who is interested should participate in sorting and labeling
the donations and ideally trying to get the parts for the above-described kits
in order so that people can grab them, buy them from sudoroom, and then build
them.
thanks again for the donation!!!!!!!!
Hello Sudo room I went through the laser cutter system and environment
thoroughly, and we are now able to use it at 24/7.
there are a couple of loose connections inside that I solded alligator
clips to to clip onto the laser itself.
I replaced the 4-ft water pump hoses with 6'1 so that there's slack with
the laser system and water canister.
I cleaned out the water canister a bit and replaced the water.
Ripped out all the old tape that partially covered some of the gaps in the
ventilation system. I'd redone it thoroughly with new foil tape.
I have truncated all excess hosing on the short ventilation run for better
air flow. I also compressed all of the excess hosing on the larger run for
better airflow as well. All of the slack has been removed from both sides.
I ventilation leak test by engaging the laser into a thick piece of wood
for about 30 seconds, which has also cause flames to be admitted from it
while firing. The test has passed as their husband no smell of of smoke
inside Sudo To with it on for that period of time.
I am full of excitement, ambition, joy, and hackery, to let everybody know
that our MLE-40 laser system is back online. it hasn't been too long
because it hasn't been done again until now.
