yesterday sudoroom was offered an ex-uhaul box truck for donation.
we would be giving a donation receipt to someone else (the owner) &
give the person/group making the offer to us a shared use agreement.
it might be in need of minor repair but otherwise drives.
the offerer claims to have somewhere to park it in case we don't want to
deal with it &
wants shared access as part of the deal.
the offerer's group's 501c3 fell through &
need to provide a donation receipt to the actual donor.
i feel it would be an asset to the omni community
as would a storage space for omni tables/chairs/etc
i, hereby, publicly declare war on the rats at the omni. please deploy and

*Statewide Tenants’ Rights Counselor Training*

for housing justice! Tenant’s rights counselor training May 31st and June
1st 5:30-8:00 pm 2016”]*
Tenants Together, California's Statewide Organization for Renters' Rights
(based in San Francisco), seeks volunteers to become tenants’ rights
counselors. Tenants Together volunteers have worked alongside over ten
thousand California renters as they learn and fight for their rights.
Counselors help tenants fight against evictions, rent increases,
uninhabitable living conditions and the wholesale displacement of their
communities.
*Counselors are key in the fight against gentrification and displacement. *As
a Tenant Hotline Counselor you will play a key role in empowering tenants
to assert their rights and protect their homes and families. Recently
counselors have been educating tenants in cities like Alameda, Hayward,
Richmond and Concord that are being massively affected by the affordable
housing crisis in SF and the Bay Area to make sure tenants don’t pack up
and leave when they get a rent increase. As we have seen in SF and Oakland,
the appalling impacts of displacement always more intensely affect people
of color, low income communities, disabled and elderly folks, and immigrant
communities. Counselors have the opportunity to work directly with those
who are most affected by the housing crisis, not only to bring them vital
information, but to catalyze them to organize, and to support them in this
struggle for their rights.
*The next scheduled training, over two days, is: *
*Monday, May 24th 5:30-8pm *
*Tuesday, May 25th 5:30-8pm *
BOTH DAYS are required to complete the counseling training. You will learn
invaluable skills to help your community and become part of a team fighting
for housing justice.
Volunteers are expected to commit to at least 3 hours per week at the
Tenants Together office located at 474 Valencia St, San Francisco. The
Hotline operates Monday through Friday, 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., and
Thursdays 6:00-8:00 pm (we can also consider alternative time
slots/duration during the week, please contact Sara to discuss)
We aim to help build an anti-racist, feminist, multiracial, anti-oppressive
tenant movement. This means we do not tolerate racism, homophobia, ableism,
transphobia, islamophobia, classism, cis-sexism, or sexism. We also hope to
continue working to make this event, and our office, as accessible as
possible to everyone who is interested in being part of the fight for
housing justice.
*Accessibility:* The building/ office is wheelchair accessible and is 2
city blocks from 16th and Mission BART . We will be taking regular breaks
throughout the training. We have a gender inclusive bathroom. Unfortunately
we are not currently a scent-free working space. If you have any
accessibility concerns, requests or comments please email

Hello fellow-JS-ers,
Tomorrow night (Thursday 4/28) at Javascript night, I'm planning to work
through this
<http://www.meetup.com/Build-With-Code-San-Francisco/events/230640534/>
lecture/program on
some aspects of the language I haven't yet gone deeply into. Hopefully
enough interested people show up to do the pair programing part of the
agenda :)
>From the event page:
- Learn and build with the hard parts of JavaScript through intuitive
lectures and pair-programming
- This week for Javascript - The Hard Parts we cover Callbacks and
Higher Order Functions. This includes how to handle or recreate the
functions:
- map • reduce • forEach This is a concept that 80% of JavaScript
engineers do not understand but are at the core of every single
successful
application.
- This is possible because we'll understand the essence of these
tough concepts and then switch into pair-programming through the
challenges
to cement the concepts
- The evening session is comprised of:
- 6:30 - 6:45pm: Sign in and meet your future pair programming
partner.
- 6:45 - 7:15pm: Core JavaScript concept for the challenge and
introduction to the secret hack for learning to code -
pair-programming.
- 7:15 - 8:00pm: Pair-programming.
If anyone has suggestions for better tutorials for these concepts in JS
specifically, please let me know. Otherwise, it will be interesting to try
it out and see what happens, and maybe get some new people in the space.
I'm trying to reverse-engineer the communication between a USB OTG device
and an android app.
Does anyone have a "Beagle USB 12" or similar device that I might be able
to borrow for a couple of hours?
Or failing that, does anyone have an android device with usbmon enabled in
the kernel?
I can meet you at your hackerspace of choice. Will bring beer :)

Hi! I'm working on a project to develop an open source decentralized system
for sharing biological samples (DNA, strains, etc). Think decentralized
github + inventory tracking + biological sneakernet :)
I'm doing the client and server side javascript but we need someone to help
us with the UI/UX design and implementation.
Let me know if you're interested and we can meet up somewhere.
Formal description below.
------
# Description
Work with the bionet team to develop UI/UX for web app aimed at
facilitating the decentralized sharing of open source physical biological
materials (DNA, strains, etc). Work will include developing web app look
and feel through communication with the rest of the team, sketching
wireframes, building mockups and implementing a UI for the web app using
HTML and CSS (no javascript).
# Time commitment
Part-time employed position for now.
# Start date
Immediate.
# About the team
We're a small team of six dedicated humans working on aspects of the
project
ranging from wetware and legal to hardware and software. You will work
closely with our software lead to integrate UI with frontend/backend
functionality, and collaborate with all teammembers on aspects of the app
as they relate to their respective areas of expertise.
# Software details
The project is new and development on the first prototype is underway but
in
its early stages. All code is being released under open source licenses.
The software stack is nodejs + leveldb + browserify using modules and ideas
for decentralized/offline web apps developed by folks including substack,
mafintosh, dominictarr and maxogden. Focus is on development and reuse of
small modular components rather than reliance on existing frameworks.
# Skills
UI/UX design experience. Extensive experience with modern web app frontend
html+css development for both desktop and mobile. Experience with
development of custom graphical UI assets. Basic command line experience
and ability to use git/github a plus. Javascript experience a plus but
definitely not required. Experience with open source development a plus.
# About The BioBricks Foundation
Our mission is to ensure that the engineering of biology is conducted in an
open and ethical manner to benefit all people and the planet.

Bay Area Bike Share <http://www.bayareabikeshare.com/> is about to install
a number of bike share stations in the East Bay. You can suggest locations
here:
http://suggest.bayareabikeshare.com/
I think it would be great to have a bike share station in front of the
Omni. If we can get enough people to vote for it, that might actually
happen...
Patrik
my friend found one of these in the trash:
http://www.glorystargroup.com/ClientFolder/glorystar2014/Library/Tree/pdf_S…
it has a 2GB SD card in it that seems to have gone bad but otherwise i
think it works. I have the big plastic display thing it was mounted in,
so we can put it on a wall somewhere and have it play whatever video you
want in a loop. It has speakers too if you want it to be really annoying.
if anyone wants it let me know, otherwise i'll stick it in the vending
machine.

what did you expect would happen when you handed out physical keys to
people? they copy them and hand out copies, and then those get copied
too.
Now someone is repeatedly using their key to unlock the front door, and
leaving the lock in the "unlocked" position.
I arrived at Omni at 10PM and the door was like that. I immediately found
someone with a key and used their key to re-lock the door, and I confirmed
with that person that they understood to always re-lock the door after
using their key.
When I left Omni at 2:15AM, it was unlocked again. I had a front-door key
stashed somewhere and I went and got it to re-lock the door, since there
was nobody around answering my request for a front door key.
The moral of the story? Someone with a key is leaving the front door
unlocked, multiple times a day, including between the hours of 10PM and
2AM.
I have worked very hard to make sure the magnetic stripe access card
system is 100% reliable, including it having a battery backup and
automatic notifications that go out to multiple people if anything goes
wrong. I did this work so we wouldn't make the same mistake of handing
out physical keys that get copied and copied and handed out to whomever.
I propose we re-key the front door and only give keys to very specific
people who promise not to make any copies. It's easy enough to add cards
to the card access system (that's a whole other discussion) that we should
not have to be handing out keys anymore.

*We’ve been changing the exterior of the Omni to increase security,
accessibility, and improve the buildings appearance. *You may have seen our
beautiful new front door that improves wheelchair accessibility. Exterior
lighting has been repaired and we will add more as finances permit. After
long discussions about privacy and security concerns, we have developed a
security camera system that ensures footage can only be used when necessary
for increasing the safety of our community. You will soon see security
cameras mounted to observe key areas of the exterior and sidewalk. The
cypress trees have been pruned back, but there is discussion about problems
with them, such as providing hiding places for both people and objects, and
the mess they leave on the sidewalk.

ultimately converted into Real Vegan Cheese through standard cheese-making
processes – just like cheese made from cow or goat milk!

this company is in Berkeley and they make really cool stuff! it's a lot
of hands-on stuff and I wouldn't hesitate to apply if you think you can do
the work, even if you don't have the "Qualifications"
If you want to go check out what they do and meet them, they're very nice:
ALL Power Labs holds Open House events – usually on the 2nd Friday of the
month from 5-7pm. These are informal events, so you can show up any time
during that period, ask us lots of questions, and then enjoy cold beer and
hot pizza, baked in a biomass-powered electric oven running off one of our
Power Pallets.
Families, friends, and dogs are welcome!

last night we installed a full-size wood router on the end of the sudoroom
robot, with a 1/4" diameter endmill, using the metal bracket Elisabeth
made. And we carved a shape into a piece of wood with it.
if you need to route any wood stuff please let me know. I can help you do
it. If you make a simple SVG file with the path you want to carve, the
robot can follow it, similar to the way it drew this dinosaur with a
sharpie:

Great event upcoming June 4th
http://www.alterconf.com/conferences/san-francisco-ca hoping some folks can
submit a talk (due by Monday.) Looking for folks to volunteer also.
I went to event in Oakland, it was great.
Is there any interest in having an AlterConf at Sudo? I'm willing to help
with efforts if folks are interested.

Hi all,
I'd like to share with you a website I've been working on as a side-project.
It's a place for people to share all the things they make, and build a
following :-). It's a totally custom CMS. Feel free to register and
poke around, it's a cool platform.
It's just about ready to go public, but there's one big issue: all
emails seem to be going right to spam. I have a mail-in-a-box SMTP
server configured on a D.O. droplet, with proper DNS records etc.
Still, no luck.
If anyone thinks this a thing they see as cool / would like to get
behind, feel free to reach out!
Cheers,
-Adam

My friend is trying to start a business building electric cargo tricycles:
https://igg.me/at/frankentrikes
"do me the honor of at least watching the vid if you haven't already cause
we put a lot of work into that and share it with Noisebridge and SudoRoom
This is about diy going pro. There's nothing shameful about taking a
successful project and wanting to share it to a broader audience. I would
love nothing more than to see tricycles take over American streets just
as they are being driven out of Asian streets.
That would be a genuine victory."
so there's a robot being built at sudoroom... another one.
it's based on a golf-club bag caddy cart thing I pulled out of the trash
at Shipyard in berkeley. It's pretty lightweight so it's less likely to
break peoples legs if it goes berzerk, compared with the last mobile robot
i made (MC Hawking) which was based on a really heavy electric wheelchair.
Robb has supplied some awesome batteries, lfp100aha which each need two
bolts to connect to them, M8 thread, and no more than 10mm long threads
with no shoulder. We have four of them so we need eight bolts.
if you have access to a kit of M8 bolts and can grab eight 10mm long (the
threaded part that is) of them, we need them to proceed with the robot.
it's next to the regular robot arm, which is in its usual spot. If you
bring the bolts to me or Robb or place them in the hand of the big robot,
that would be awesome.
Also, seeking AI programmers to make this robot work.
thank you

despite the hubblub out there about firewire audio not being supported by
linux, all i had to do was:
*sudo gedit /etc/default/rtirq*
change
RTIRQ_NAME_LIST="rtc snd usb i8042"
to
RTIRQ_NAME_LIST="rtc *firewire* snd usb i8042"
&
RTIRQ_NONE_THREADED="rtc snd"
to
RTIRQ_NON_THREADED="rtc *firewire* snd"
open *qjackctl* -> click Setup -> change settings to
Driver: *firewire* (This selects the ffado driver stack)
Interface: hw:0
Audio:Duplex (or Capture only)
Check Realtime
Priority: (default)
Frames/Period: *128*
Sample Rate: 44100 (adjust the sample rate to the specs of your fw device)

Hey all,
The network equipment had been organized recently, and the platform had been reorganized for better access to the printers.
However, I decluttered the rest of the junk laying around and consolidated the audio equipment.
Please help keep this area clean and useable!
There are two 1/8" headphone jacks connected to the "phono" input of the fisher stereo. One is on the platform, at the standing desk. The other is on the main sudo table on the ground floor, as usual.
You can also select the "tuner" input.
Please leave both speakers A and B on, they sound better together (less distortion, harder to blow out).
This is a lighter-duty set up than before, so the sound level should be more manageable. Further, we have several more inputs available, so please take advantage of that.
Maybe we should connect sudo bot in to one of these?
Murmurmurmurmur
Gnight!
well done. it looks great. i expect having to switch between sudobot &
whatever else might be an issue for sudobot.
perhaps we should ask them.

Hi everyone,
I'm just finishing up a move from Tech Liminal's space in downtown Oakland
to a much smaller space, and will not be needing some of the furniture.
We've already found homes for everything but this round IKEA table:
Would this be useful at the Omni? If so, I can drop it off tonight around
8:30 PM. The table is in okay shape - the top has some dings on it. It's
pretty sturdy and around 48" in diameter.
Cheers,
Anca.

I have a contract position available for someone who is up for the task of
implementing/improving web-based 1D/2D barcode scanning algorithms.
The details are:
1. We have a partial DataMatrix scanner implementation that needs
completion/improvement (speed / fidelity) or replacement.
2. We need 1D barcode scanning ported from Java to JavaScript.
The first one is the most important.
The organization is the BioBricks foundation which is a non-profit: "Our
mission is to ensure that the engineering of biology is conducted in an
open and ethical manner to benefit all people and the planet."
We're developing a system to facilitate the sharing of open wetware (DNA,
strains, etc.) and part of tracking samples is scanning tiny 2D barcodes on
the bottom of sample tubes that are sometimes partially obscured by
ice/condensation.
All code should be implemented in javascript that can run both in node.js
and in the browser. All code developed will be released as open source.
Work is decentralized so you can work from home/wherever.
Let me know if you're interested or know anyone who might be interested.

Omni folk, Sudo folk, (Bcc)
As you know, Julie has been helping us around the Omni by holding
Restorative Justice trainings, community circles, and conflict mediation,
in addition to her day job at UC Berkeley's Restorative Justice Center.
If you have the means, please support the UCB RJ Center's current
crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to hire three RJ Student Leaders who
will do RJ in their communities on campus: hold community building circles
in the cooperative student housing and student organizations, help people
resolve conflicts, and do harm and peace building circles.
And please spread the word.
Love,
Julio

does anyone know what's wrong with the wooden Type A Machines 3d printer?
i can't get it to respond anything sensible, and i've tried several
baudrates; 115200 230400 and 250000
sometimes it gives some gibberish, but mostly it says nothing.
-jake
the TAZ lulzbot 3d printer seems to be missing the fan and fan shroud from
the print head. Does anyone know where it went or what happened to it?
also, it needs a software update, does anyone care if i do this?
does anyone want to help get this printer going?
thanks

The Omni's insurance company is upset because people are sitting on the
steps outside of the ballroom entrance drinking beer. We have tried talking
to them but they're not being cooperative.
Since it's an emergency exit we can't make it hard to sit on the steps
without also blocking the exit.
So! Taking a queue from the Copenhagen main train station me and Robb have
set up a system that constantly plays loud dramatic atonal symphony music
from the other side of the door.
Unfortunately we don't have any powered speakers that are quire loud enough
to penetrate.
If you have any < 12" powered speakers that you'd like to donate to this
endavour, please bring them by :)
--------------
For the technically curious:
It's a cheap Western Digital N750 router running openwrt with a usb stick
full of mp3s, a usb audio interface and some desktop computer speakers.
Feel free to add music but ensure that they are mp3 format. Just turn it
off before unplugging the usb stick. It will automatically start playing
all mp3s on the stick when it boots.
We had the idea that it would be really useful if we could blast it only
when people sit there, so if we had a camera that could specifically only
see the steps and then allowed sudo/omni members to tune in and blast music
when someone is sitting there, that would be nice.

Greetings,
We are composing Omni's first newsletter! This will be digitally and
physically distributed, ideally next week.
As you read this message, please think of a few possible contributions:
announcements about recent and upcoming events; updates on ongoing
projects; opportunities for newbs to learn more about your
collective/working group; requests for volunteers and collaborators; photos
and video links - really, the more hodgepodge and diverse, the more it will
suitably represent the Omni :)
It would be great to have this newsletter ready in time for the anarchist
bookfair, so please send the thing asap, before Friday if possible!
Please reply to this thread or send a message to comms(a)lists.omnicommons.org
Thankya!

so i've been working on the black sudoroom vending machine (vending1):
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/hack-o-mat
which had previously been hacked by students at UC Berkeley (i think)
I believe it's a Snacktron like Emma and Ed's machine.
(unlike our brown vending machine which is a snackshop II)
pictures of their machine can be seen here:
http://spaz.org/~jake/pix/vend/
they had ripped out the original control unit, and wired it up with a
bunch of reed relays and an arduino. The motors of the vending machine
are wired as a grid of rows and columns, so the controller needs to be
able to enable a single row and column in order to power one product
motor.
But it also needs to be able to detect when the product motor has rotated
a full turn, and is back at the "home" position where it needs to stop.
There's a "home" sensor on the back of the motor, but the way it's wired
was a mystery for a while. Here's some pictures of the homing circuit:
http://spaz.org/~jake/pix/vend/IMG_20160401_015211.jpghttp://spaz.org/~jake/pix/vend/IMG_20160401_015700.jpg
as you can see, the only difference between the button being pressed or
not pressed, is that the 420nF capacitor is in parallel with the motor or
not. Since the whole thing is in series with a diode (to protect against
trying to turn a motor backwards) we were stumped as to how to detect
whether a motor was homed or not.
Thanks to Zach who donated some test equipment including this awesome
signal generator (along with a nice power supply and bench multimeter):
http://imgur.com/LTSFfOe
I was able to connect an AC waveform in series with a 12VDC supply to one
of the motors, and figure out how to detect whether the home switch is
closed or not. Basically, you make a 31KHz (or similar frequency)
squarewave in series with the power supply, and watch the current through
the motor. If the button is open and the capacitor is not in-circuit, the
motor's inductance absorbs the AC and the current draw is relatively
smooth. But when the motor arrives at the home position (when you need to
stop delivering product!) the capacitor gets switched in, and now you'll
see a lot of the AC on the current path of the system.
Here is a video showing the voltage across a 22-ohm series resistor while
the motor is rotating with 12VDC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHIGDw5HRCg
apparently it takes that motor about 11 seconds to dispense a product and
finish returning to home position, assuming the product weighs nothing.
by the way, you'll notice that i'm using the old analog oscilloscope.
Unfortunately the LeCroy 9510 has started crashing, basically
bluescreening. It probably needs to be opened up and cleaned, as it got
wet after a fire before it was donated to sudoroom.
Or maybe someone wants to donate a nicer oscilloscope to sudoroom?
anyway, now I know how to detect the motor homing signal, and I just need
to wire up this machine to its arduino to detect the signal and dispense
product more accurately. If anyone wants to help, please let me know.
by the way, if you are wondering how the UC students detected when the
motors were finished dispensing product, the answer is absurd:
they put a laser beam across the path where product would fall when
dispensed, and they watched for the laser beam to be interrupted.
did it work? I don't know. probably the semester ended and they got
their grade and moved on, and then they donated the vending machine to us.

Unless someone complains I'm dropping the Thursday evening events for now.
That means that we have one weekly meeting only: Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
Last meeting I was planning to prototype a 12v power cable. A couple of new
meshers showed up though. I'm sure these won't be people who show up once
and then never again since one is already an active sudo'er and the other
is a ccl'er. I ended up intro-ing them to the mesh. One of them should be
able to tie intro existing mesh connections in west oakland but needed
approval from housemates, the other person has a view of lake merritt and
he took a home node and picostation extender back with him :)
Next Tuesday I want to try to solder those cables and we need to design a
sticker that annotates what each port on the home node is used for so we
don't have to manually make little notes/stickers every time.

Is this weekend in livermore.
I'm considering going. Tickets are $30/day, but it may be worth it to
see robots get smashed and go through varied challenges.
Anyone else?

Im going to hold on to the scope for now. Have fun with the bench supply and other gear.

Thanks Anthony!
Why not the oscilloscope?
Not enough room? Perhaps Jacob can pick it up,
I think he was going to pick it all up himself
originally.
That
oscilloscope apparently has some 16-line digital analyzer
built in,
could be really awesome.

Thanks for sending out this email and CC-ing me jake.
To be clear, these are meant as a donation (no quotation marks) to sudo room, for as long as sudo room exists. What I mentioned to Jake was that if sudo room closes for some reason (we are all struggling with rent in the bay here) I would want them back. They would be the property of sudo room for as long as sudo room is around (hopefully forever).
does that make sense / is that agreeable to people? i wouldnt care if the equipment was damaged from use or whatever
if it is very hard to pick them up i can make some time in the coming weeks to drive it all down there.
