vending machine #1 nearing operational status

the black vending machine (closest to the exit sign and bathroom) is nearly operational. Thanks to Lesley for helping with the power cord and networking cables! There is a beaglebone black inside which is on the network, and I am working on software to get it to be able to dispense whatever we put in there. We need a quality combination lock for the thing, so that multiple people can add goodies to it. and of course there is a lot of software to write. At first, you will only be able to pay using your sudo-humans account, and any money you put into it. I am only working on the software for the hardware - making the internal electronics able to dispense product when the software triggers it. If anyone wants to help with that, let me know - it's just arduino C. Of course if you want to work on it, I will set you up with access codez. -jake

Project help?

Hello sudoers, I'm trying to build a pseudo-docking station for my laptop, that would enclose the power, hdmi and thunderbolt plugs that I currently have to plug in separately (all are right next to each other). The best idea I've had for how to do this has been to create a 3-d computer model of the plugs, and then 3-d print an enclosure that can house all three of them. Do you have a laser scanner that could make such a model? I have some experience with 3d printing, but I've never used a laser scanner before, so I'd need some help with that, as I understand they can be quite finicky. I would plan on making a monetary donation to sudoroom, and/or becoming a member. Alternatively, if anyone has any other ideas about how to do this, I'd welcome them. Thanks! -Matt Bush

Pack the Courtroom with the Land Action 4, April 1st

Dear beloved Sudo, This is PAT XU here, TLDR – Myself and 3 other organizers are facing some serious political repression for our activism! Come support us in court, 9 am, April 1st: https://www.facebook.com/events/1515732032065377/ The District Attorney (DA) is aggressively prosecuting four Land Action organizers, Kelly Jewett, Steven DeCaprio, Wren Hyde, and myself, for our involvement in a recent adverse possession project. There are seven criminal charges, including three felony counts and four misdemeanors. Contrary to established precedent from similar cases in Oakland in recent years, the DA has deliberately, and in violation of the law, pushed this civil dispute into criminal court. Why? The case was brought to the DA’s attention because the property’s owner of record was personally connected to the DA’s office. By taking advantage of this backdoor connection, the owner persuaded the DA to drastically overreach its jurisdiction and use public funding to intervene on the owner’s behalf; a clear case of nepotism. But the DA has its own political motives for attacking Land Action. In recent years, Land Action has achieved significant victories around squat law and adverse possession. By dragging Land Action through the mud, the DA intends to put the entire history of squatting and adverse possession in Oakland on trial – with the aim of criminalizing these activities. These tactics are time-honored forms of direct action that have played a significant role in social movements worldwide. In the past decade, squats have housed thousands of people in the Bay Area. Adverse possession, enshrined in the legal code of all 50 States, is as old as property law itself. It allows people to acquire full ownership of real property with very little capital investment, which makes it antithetical to the ruling-class agenda of keeping working people enmeshed in the cycle of rent-wage-exploitation. In short, the DA is defending the commonly held belief that home ownership should be very, extremely, prohibitively expensive—a perception that plays right into the interests of capital. The DA’s aggressive prosecution of Land Action’s organizers is occurring at a time when local government has developed exceedingly cozy relations with gentrifying forces. Last year, Oakland City Council came under fire for offering a luxury housing developer the acre-sized 12th Street Remainder Parcel for much less than its market value. In a confidential memo, the City Attorney informed the Council that state law requires them to first offer surplus land to low-income housing agencies, park agencies, school districts, and other entities that serve the public interest. But against the advice of their own attorney, the Council proceeded with their illegal plan, which was already underway when the City Attorney’s memo was leaked to the East Bay Express. Only then did public scrutiny force the Council to bring their actions into compliance with state law. Local government is all too willing to disregard the law in the service of Capital and at the expense of the poor. The DA has aligned itself with this agenda, using public funding to defend the property interests of the land-holding class. The DA has chosen to flout the very laws it is charged with upholding, for the sake of consolidating property rights and maintaining access barriers to home ownership. Just take a magnetic stripe card you carry around, such as a Safeway card, drivers license or debit card, swipe it 3 times at the omni front door, then email access(a)omnicommons.org saying what time you did it. Trying to get back to just breathing is enough of a burden. To think that my film may now not reach the audience I made it for, let’s just say that doesn’t help the healing process. Many of you have asked if there’s anything you can do to help me. I have thought about it – and, yes, actually, there is something you could do to help me. I need you to be part of a quickly cobbled-together “army” of grassroots “ambassadors” who can do the work I was going to do this week to let people know abut the movie and convince as many as possible to go see it. I realize you haven’t seen “Where To Invade Next”, so I’m asking you to do this based upon my past work and your hope that I’ve made a compelling film that might affect change in this country, that will inspire people to think about things in a different way. I also believe this movie can have a huge impact on the elections this year. It’s won a bunch of film festival prizes, it’s made the Oscars shortlist, and some have called it my best film ever. Last week, laying in the hospital, I watched one Presidential candidate attack the candidate from Vermont for his ideas being “unrealistic,” “pie in the sky,” and “ideas that sound good on paper, but aren’t going to happen.” The truth is, all these great “ideas” – free universal health care, free university, free day care, taxing and policing hedge fund millionaires – have already happened in nearly every other industrialized country in the world! And I have the evidence – and the film — to prove it! Throughout “Where To Invade Next”, I invade a whole bunch of nefarious countries, from Slovenia to Germany to France to Norway, and pry loose from them the tools they’ve been using to make their countries happy, shiny places. My goal: to show millions of Americans what these countries have been hiding from us so we can catch up and be #1 again! Remember “WE’RE #1!!”? Don’t you miss being #1 and waving those big foam #1 fingers at patriotic rallies? In my invasions, I don’t use any weapons, and no one gets droned. Anyone still working on sudo-humans?

There are a number of bugs in the system, and a slew of feature requests.
