I'm trying to drive several devices:
1) 1x 1w 12v fan (pentium 2 cpu cooler)
2) 1x 100w 35v 3a smd led. (I want the led to be dimmable & ideally capable
of high frequency switching :))
- *Forward Voltage (VF): DC 32-34V*
- *Forward current (IF): 3000MA*
- *Out put Lumens: 8000-9500LM*
3) several other servo/stepper motors for pan/tilt type uses
with one arduino uno.
Obviously, the arduino will not power the led so I need a driver for it &
maybe even the motors.
My research leads me to think that the led wants a constant current of 3
amps & a variable voltage for dimming. Circuits of this caliber have not
been forthcoming in my searches on the web.
Thank you for your consideration. Cheers
Robb

Subject: Inventors tv show - call for inventors

To: press(a)noisebridge.net
Hi,
My name is Ashley and I work for Pitch 5 Productions, a tv production company based in Los Angeles. We are working on a pilot for a major cable network and are looking for inventors for a segment of the show, so we’re reaching out to Maker/Hackerspaces around the country to find some really amazing creations. I wanted to reach out and see if anyone within your organization might be interested, or if you could submit the following post in any bulletins or message boards. Here’s what we’re looking for:
We are casting inventors who would want to have one of their inventions safety tested by a major product testing company. Inventors would appear on camera for a non airing pilot. Inventors would demonstrate their invention and engineers would put their product through appropriate safety testing. For example, if the product has electrical components, some type of motor, or plugs in, they would put the product through the necessary tests to receive a safety mark.
This is a great opportunity for inventors who are trying to get their product to market.
Interested candidates please send contact info, a brief description of your product and current photo of yourself to ashley(a)pitch5productions.com.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call or email.
Best,
Ashley Sims

Hey all,
Jerome and I were messing with this old apple laptop, we left it on the 3D
printer desk, assuming that no one would bother stealing such an
under-powered device.
Lo and behold, it seems to be missing... Hopefully somebody just picked it
up thinking it was an up-for-grabs relic!
If you have it, please return it to me. If you've seen it, please let me
know where/when. If you know who has it, please let me know.

I know the subject line is like.. woot!?? :)
But seriously... :) I am looking for someone to hold my hand and walk me
through (help me with) a couple of small projects. Here is what I wish to
accomplish:
1- to get a router with OpenWRT (Not sure of its capabilities, but I like
the idea to get ride of the corporate code, because potential backdoors)
2- and if needed, a tiny computer that would be always connected to a VPN
account, so that all home computers can use it as their gateway; IF the
router cannot do this.
What can I give in exchange?
Well, I don't know what knowledge I can share when all of you seem to be
way above my head.
I don't know, maybe Photography? Spanish? :)
Please let me know if interested, we can start right away. I am eager to
start this.
Many thanks,
Daniel

In general, if you have any piece of equipment or furniture you would like
to donate to CCL, *please check with us first*! You can always email
info(a)counterculturelabs.org to contact some of the organizers (I'll check
if we have a donations@ and equipment@ alias as well). At a very minimum,
for goodness sake please add a note to whatever you dropped off.
So *whomever dropped off a bunch of stone countertops in CCL, please get
rid of them.* We don't need them, we don't want them, they're taking up
space, and we sure as heck prefer not to have to clean up after you...
The same principle applies to any equipment "donations" to Sudo and to the
Omni as a whole as well. If you haul something in, assuming you're doing
someone else a favor, it is still YOUR responsibility to make sure the
respective organizations actually want your "treasure". We are all having a
hard enough time keeping entropy under control with the stuff we have
already...
Thanks!

I don't fit into the startup scene all the time even though I secretly enjoy it when it's good
But I don't fit into the activist & cool social movements folks all the time even though they're doing important smart innovative work
I'm still barely getting my feet wet in open source & seek to make contributions but the passionate opinionated folks at Sudoroom && Noisebridge show me the way
I'm glad I can visit places like Sudoroom and omni where people like me who don't always fit in can hang out!

We hosted their event. One Omni person was bottom lining it, but
didn't read the full poster before approving. Another Omni person saw
the posters and do-o-cratically crossed out the word "autistic". Then
we asked the organizers to correct all their flyers, which they
apparently did.
Our community has no love for Google, gentrification, OR for ableism.
We are sorry to have our name associated with any of those things.
"Anti-intellectualism" is just a cheap shot which portrays tech

Hey folks!
I, Dusty, and Anka have been putting in some time with the door to SUDO and
CCL. We have reached a point were it is important to get information/input
from you...as we can't proceed with this project without it.
*The basic needs for this door:*
- The door needs to sweep/open outward, toward the main exits of the
building. As such it needs to be "hanged" in a way opposite of it's current
(now former) position.
- There needs to be a "panic bar" installed along with a nice "door
closer". We have the door closer and a panic bar. The panic bar as selected
by Marc (who knows more about this stuff than Anka and myself).
*Needed from SUDO/CCL folks:*
- In order to re-hang this door, we need to figure out how the panic bar
will work with the existing door frame.
- We need to have folks from SUDO relay information about, or instal
(preferred), a panic bar system that will work with whatever electronic
entrance mechanism you will want for your space.
A note on Labor:
Anka and myself, Dusty, are working with doors throughout the building. We
are learning as we go and I feel that it's much slower than I anticipated.
Each door in this place is different and most are quite wonky. I will be
out of town for the month of July...and subsequently unable to work on this
project until my return in August.
We want you to have a great door for your space, and we want it to be
exactly what you want. :). Can SUDO folks take this issue to a meeting and
have it discussed (if appropriate)?
Thanks!
Dusty

Hi Niki! I meant to respond when you sent a message like this awhile ago,
regarding someone who refused to properly close the door after opening it.
Before I talk about the technical situation, which I believe applies to
this problem, I want to try to answer your specific question.
The procedure for granting door access, when I do it, is by demonstrating
how the unlocking and re-locking procedure works, and making sure people
understand that they must re-lock the door after opening it.
But of course sometimes people will forget, or worse, actively shirk their
duty to re-lock the door. In the latter case, if a person refuses your
request to re-lock the door they unlocked, I will electronically revoke
their access until they explain themselves at the appropriate meeting.
This would also be appropriate for people who repeatedly forget to re-lock
the door after themselves.
We have been working on the door technology a lot this last week,
improving reliability. But we have been holding back on adding features
because I understand that we are very close to replacing the front door.
The new front door will not "unlock" and "re-lock" but will be the usual
type of door which you "buzz" open, and when it closes it locks again.
One of the features we can add in the meantime is a record of incidents
when people use their card to unlock the door, and it does not get
re-locked within 5 minutes. If the people are not members of La Commune,
we will know to contact them for re-education.
It's my understanding that we have received a permit to replace the front
door, and that someone bottomlining that project has taken measurements.
I do not know how long it will take or who is doing it, but this is why I
have not changed the front door system to activate the doorknob instead of
unlocking the pins. If it activated the doorknob instead, it would
automatically lock when the door closed again. But it's a lot of work to
do considering the door will be replaced very soon.
Once again, if any person with electronic access is being irresponsible
with unlocking the door, I am willing to de-activate their card until they
come to the appropriate meeting to resolve the problem.
And I will be more pro-active in reminding people to lock the door they
open, and I will look into the access logging feature.
thank you,
-jake

the door should be closed and locked if no one is watching the front.

I'm specifically trying to get into orchestral composition. Currently I can
read basic music notation and can play at least piano+guitar at a

I'd like to level up my theoretical understanding and at the same time get

Update: tonight's Sudoroom meeting has formally banned Egon for safe
space reasons. Although Omni's policies require a conflict resolution

exceptions to that rule.

Joe, it sounds like he flat out lied to you. He makes a member feel
unsafe and is not welcome until that issue is resolved. That's the
only story anyone needs to know at this point. Our policies are very
clear about that.

Hi all,
I've been meaning to design and laser cut a contraption for our Science
Sideshow at the Cal Academy NightLive LIVE
<http://www.calacademy.org/nightlife/nightlife-live-june> event this
Thursday evening, but I'm rapidly running out of time.
Anyone able to give me a hand?
Basically, I found these vases that look just like giant test tubes - long
cylinder with a rounded bottom. So now I want to make a giant test tube
rack, and have them sitting at our booth with some food color and dry ice,
steaming away. Would look awesome!
I got about halfway through designing the thing in Inkscape, but I've never
dealt with designing fasteners for plywood before. Needs to have a wide
base so it doesn't tip over, but also needs to be hangable from a wall, so
the base may need to be removable.
If I were to order this through Ponoko, I'd probably go with something like
their 1/4 inch amber bamboo plywood
<http://www.ponoko.com/make-and-sell/show-material/226-bamboo-amber-3-ply>.
Is there any plywood at Sudo? Recommendations for a good place to buy nice
plywood?

Hello Bay Area fellow Wikipedians,
The San Francisco Public Library and the Mozilla's HIVE Learning Networks
are launching a new Teen Tech Center in SF called The Mix.
The Hive Learning Network is a global community effort of Youth Servicing
Organizations led by the Mozilla Foundation. The HLN champions digital
skills and web literacy through connected learning. They have a presence in
11 cities including Bangalore, Vancouver and Mombasa, and growing fast with
10 new cities to launch by end of 2015.
This is a pilot program to help us/WMF evaluate if this is a viable
mechanism for the movement to engage with youth and help build future
community of Wikipedians.
The SFPL agreed to host a Wikipedia Station to help youth navigate and use
our projects as well as potentially contribute to them. This program will
be ran by the staff of The Mix - I am looking for someone(s) to train their
staff on becoming a Wikipedian and a guide to the youth in their program.
If you are interested, please feel free to ping me via email, I can share
more details.
The Mix launches next Wednesday June 18th - ideally we would like to have a
Young Wikipedian's in Training booth for back to school - sept 2015.
Thank you!

I'm not sure our universe contains big enough N's or O's to respond to
this appropriately.
Hey everyone,
I'm Lily at Brainbot! We're making a wearable mindfulness device that
vibrates when you are stressed or distracted, using awareness of your
real-time HRV signals to help guide you back to a place of calm and focus.
We're based in San Francisco and working on our fourth prototype design.
We've raised some angel funding and in July we'll join HAX - a hardware
accelerator based in Shenzhen, China - for a three-month program to rapidly
prototype and go to production on our device. After the program we'll be
back in San Francisco to launch!
We're looking for a great hardware engineer to come along on the ride - we
offer a lower salary than Apple but substantially more equity for the right
person - and the chance to create something from scratch at the earliest
stage.
Send us an email at team(a)brainbot.me if this sounds like something you
might love to do.
We're particularly looking for some combination of the following
interests/skills/experience:
Arduino prototyping
Biosensors
Embedded systems
Digital signal processing
Rapid prototyping
Manufacturing
Soft goods and industrial design
PCB layout and design
Mindfulness or meditation practice
Thanks for reading. Let us know if you have any questions!

Hi friends,
I'm writing to let you all know about an un/conference at Noisebridge on
June 29-30, Digital Rights in Libraries. You're all super invited, and
we also have a call for volunteers (keep reading)!
We've got some killer speakers lined up:
https://libraryfreedomproject.org/digital-rights-in-libraries/digital-right…
For more info, please check our our press release and poster that I've
pasted below! Also, the Library Freedom Project has had some fun media
lately (here
<http://www.onthemedia.org/story/librarians-vs-patriot-act/?utm_source=local…>
and here <http://www.thenation.com/article/206561/librarians-versus-nsa>
and here
<http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2015/06/03/usa_freedom_act_before_s…>),
if you're curious.
Additionally and importantly, we could use a few technology trainers to
help with some of our open sandbox privacy tools sessions. We know a lot
of librarians want to build some skills, and so in these sessions we
were hoping to have ample technology trainers available to help
participants learn as much as possible.
The times we're looking for people to come by and help are:
Monday, June 29 @ 2-3
Monday, June 29 @ 4-5
Tuesday, June 30 @ 2:30-3:30
Tuesday, June 30 @ 5:30-6:30
Let me know if you might be available or have any questions. Also let me
know if you know someone else who might be interested. Or anything at all.
Peace. And thanks a million. <3 Oakland.

which will take place at San Francisco's iconic Noisebridge hackerspace,
falls directly after the American Library Association's Annual
Conference; it's also being held in San Francisco this year.
Attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union and the Electronic
Frontier Foundation, who are leading lawsuits challenging the legality
of the National Security Agency's mass surveillance programs, will
present, along with experts on copyright and the future of digital
lending from Creative Commons and the Internet Archive. Technologists
from the Freedom of the Press Foundation (where Edward Snowden is a
board member) and Mozilla will be onsite providing in-depth technology
training at the hackerspace. The event also features librarians from a
number of libraries, including the San Francisco and Oakland Public
Library systems, as well as Oakland-based Hack the Hood, speaking on the
challenges of providing access to technology and training for Bay Area
youth.
Librarians have long been working on the front lines of information
activism and their communities' right to research. Whether by providing
access to technology and the Internet, as well as free education, or by
standing firm for over a decade as staunch opponents of the USA PATRIOT
Act, librarians are at the grassroots of the Internet freedom debate and
are uniquely plugged into serving the information needs of local
communities, especially those that lack technological or financial
resources.
The conference is being organized by the Library Freedom Project, a
recent grantee from the Knight Foundation that is a partnership among
librarians, technologists, attorneys, and advocates to teach librarians
about surveillance threats, digital rights, and privacy-protecting
technology. The Nation Magazine recently featured
<http://www.thenation.com/article/206561/librarians-versus-nsa> the work
of the Library Freedom Project as a cover story.

Hi all,
My car was recently towed in Oakland. I've come to terms with letting it go if I must, hence I do not have the funds nor desire to pay their exhorbitant fees for extrortion.
My question is if anyone has gone through a similar situation in Oakland or California for that matter. Do you have any advice/best practices?
While I'm not necessarily concerned with my credit, I am concerned with my ability to eventually drive a car legally and staying out of jail.
Much love,
-Luis M.

I regularly see broken windshield glass on the sidewalks in Temescal.
Sounds like there are some thieves who systematically cruise the
neighborhood looking for anything they can grab out of parked cars - check
the eye witness report from one of our members below.
Temescal is a relatively up-and-coming neighborhood in Oakland, but you
really should not be leaving any valuables visible in your car *anywhere*
in the Bay Area...
I know the apartment building across the street had its security camera
trained on the Omni for a while. If you experience a car break-in, there's
a possibility the police may be able to use that tape to catch these
A-holes.
If you see anything suspicious (like in this case, a car driving up on the
wrong side of the road checking out parked cars), make sure to jot down a
license plate if you can...

Hi Patrik - I went to the meetup and even brought a microscope, but as I
was unloading my car another drove up on the wrong side of the road and
opposite the car parked in front of me. Then what happened next was hard
to believe, but I then witnessed a smash-and-grab. It happened very fast
and was more than a bit confusion because at the same time that was
happening I was on the cell with my daughter and another call came in just
as the car drove up so I was paying attention completely until I heard the
sound of a window breaking, almost like a gun shot. I did not leave
immediately but went into the meetup interrupting Alan to let folks know
that they should make sure if they drove to the meetup and left anything
visible inside their car they should move it so it was not visible. What I
saw clearly demonstrated that these guys cruise looking for something they
can grab rapidly. They also are very brazen. This was in broad daylight
and I don't think they could have missed seeing me while I was on the
phone. While I was not about to put myself in harm's way to stop them I
did attempt to get the license number but by the time I got to the street
they were too far away for me to read the plate. I'm not sure if there is
a solution to this as a potential problem for attendance, but I may be
taking BART in the future. The problem with that is my wife freaked and
said it would be better to have the care damaged than her husband walking
alone at night in that part of town. Maybe. The other possibility is to
talk to the Oakland PD and see if they would have a patrol car in the area
on a regular basis. I have seen lots of broken glass in the street and now
recognize it as car break-ins that must be taking place more than
occasionally. - Ken

you can use a ribbon cable for an IDE/PATA hard drive, or a floppy disk
drive, they have more than enough pins.
if there are too many pins you can just hacksaw off the extras. Just
don't cut too close to the last row you need - leave an extra full row
just to be safe. And then glue the cut end of the ribbon cable clip so it
doesn't pull off when you forget you cut it.
does anyone know how to edit the Support Us! thing on the left side of
http://sudoroom.org ?
i want to add support for a one-time donation through stripe. I am told
it is something like this:
https://stripe.com/blog/stripe-checkout
of course it would need to be a locked link, so nobody can change it and
redirect donations toward themselves.. and I don't know how access control
works.
I also don't know anything about how to actually install this function or
any function into a webpage. I have no idea what i'm doing.
does anyone reading this list know how to set up one-time donations on our
webpage? Can we do that now? Is there anything i can do to help?
thank you!
