We are having a terrific response to our April Fool's Day
effort, the one time when you can hilariously say what you think about
miracle diets, specious reasoning and anything else that ticks you off the
other 364 days a year.
If you need any help with formatting or fleshing out ideas, let me know. We
even have a big surprise guest columnist who will be making a major
announcement.
If you want your article to appear on the April Fool's Day
<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ZlcczXns5j8fzqrQebDHqTFcI6RQU_qs_R8te9QPf2AI…>
page permanently, be sure to click the Hot Topics dropdown for the event on
the right when you edit - and set the date and time for April 1.

We are inviting people from all across science media, so pass this along if
you know someone with a sense of humor. We will put it under their byline
and link to their site, so it will make people laugh and get them some free
publicity.
Yours in science outreach,
Hank

i can pick up the bulbs tomorrow @ dtc lighting & grip for $11 each.
i forgot to mention that i have 2x 24v dmx driver units but no lights to go
w/em. if we found a fixture or two lying around, i could prolly find bulbs
to go with em @dtc

i owe everyone on this list & whoever may have listened to my complaints of
apparent thievery in sudoroom an apology as i have found my phone buried in
my car.
i hereby apologize for the above stated grave error of arising suspicion
when none is due. furthermore, i have conferred with my secret council who
has adjudged me guilty of bandwidth abuse & involuntary mischief and liable
for $10 in damages payable to sudoroom.
if you contest this decision - either in substance or amount of damages -
please do so promptly. silence is acquiescence

Hello Sudo Discuss!
I'm going to be staying in Oakland for the month of April and have an
intention of spending as much time as possible in Sudo Room. I visited Omni
Commons in October while in town for the aspiration tech conference and
have been wanting to come back ever since.
I have been working with a group called Agile Learning Centers who's aim is
to revolutionize education though methodologies adapted from Agile project
management. Over the last 7 months I've been in Everett Washington working
with a few families on a cooperative home school. My time here is over and
I'm making my way back across the country to NYC (my home).
I'll be going to the JS study group and other events in the space. The mesh
networking stuff also sounds fun and I am keen on learning some hardware
hacking.
I'd also like to put forward some offerings, I am a front end web developer
and facilitator. If anyone is interested in learning some personal goal
setting and task management stuff or CSS/HTML I'm happy to share my
knowledge. I'm a big fan of collaborative systems thinking and meetings, so
I'll be sure to stop by the sudo room general meeting.
I'm also bringing a computer tower down, and if I can get my big hard drive
out of it I'd like to donate the computer to the space at the end of the
month (possibly).
I look forward to meeting y'all in the space!
Here's my blog about my time as a facilitator in Everett:
drew.agilelearningcenters.org and my general blog is here: dru2.com
Let me know if there are any projects that could use my skills or that
anyone needs help with for the month, I love to help out.
Best,
Drew
Hey Sudo!
I was hoping we could get some basic lighting together for a show on Sunday
and didn't know if Sudo/Sudoers may have some lighting we could use
temporarily to add a bit of ambiance.
I spoke with Rob (don't have his email handy) the other day and he said he
was working on some cool lighting stuff..
I saw the cool lighting with Creature Human Creature Human performance and
it was amazing how it transformed the ballroom into a more intimate-feeling
space - it'd be cool to try to start being able to do that (albiet at a
less-professional scale) with other stuff we do in the ballroom to.
Advice, help, thoughts?
Love!
David
a while ago, i brought an embroidery machine to sudoroom, thinking it would be
a lot of fun. as is often the case, i was wrong and nobody ever took much
interest in it. It's still there but it's taking up too much space to
stay.
it's a meistergram model M100 i think, and it looks like this
http://www.zzapplique.com/Meistergram_1.jpg
i spent a night tuning it up, unjamming mechanisms and oiling things. April
bought a pack of new needles for it, and then somehow we ended up with
literally hundreds of needles (the weird kind that this machine uses, slightly
thinner shank than a standard sewing machine)
it works fine and comes with a couple of fonts. you arrange the letters in the
plate to spell the word or message, wrap the shirt or fabric around the hoop
and attach it to the pantograph, and then use the pedal to run the machine
while you use your hands to trace the peg in the stencil.
it could be used with 3d printed designs to embroider images, or manually cut
stencils, or you can just use it freehand. Oh and the knee pedal widens the
stroke of the needle for that calligraphy effect.
you must provide transportation, like a pickup truck or cargo van, and it
takes a few people to move it but there are people at sudoroom who can
help. It's now on wheels so once you get it there, it moves around easy.
if you want it, let me know. otherwise i will advertise elsewhere like
craigslist.

Hi y'all,
I need more compost for my garden. Used up my two-year pile. Berkeley is
giving away free compost, as much as you can take, to Berkeley residents
this Saturday.
http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/uploadedFiles/Parks_Rec_Waterfront/Marina/FREE…
Does anyone else here need compost (and is a Berkeley resident)? Or is
anyone here a Berkeley resident and can go with me to get the compost?
Happy to throw you $ or barter. And of course an a bottomless basket of
hot peppers, greens, limes.
Thanks a ton.

Hey sudo!
There's been little to no attendance at the sudoroom weekly meetings
lately, but we have a couple of important Omni proposals we need to
discuss and consent on this Wednesday:
* Optik Allusions tenancy:
https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Optik_Allusions_Tenancy
** tl;dr: Optik Allusions is seeking to become a tenant of the Omni,
converting and stewarding the 'crow's nest' room above the stage into a
reservable common space for media and post-production work. They intend
to contribute $100-$150/month to Omni, provide production assistance for
events, and throw dinner-and-a-movie type fundraisers.
* Black Hole Collective Lab proposal:
https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Proposals#Black_Hole_Collective_Lab.7CProposal…
** tl;dr: Black Hole, an Omni member-collective, would like to build
their celluloid film editing labs in one of the small rooms in the
basement, and would be setting up their wetlab in the northwest corner
of the basement. They're offering to renovate the moldy basement room
and pay $400/month rent after that work is done and the space is usable.
* Omni Yoga to steward the Disco Room
** "we interface with all users/renters of the disco room (to make sure
they have insurance or get on our plan as additional insured)
** therefore we handle booking for the disco room
** a portion (to be determined, sliding scale, situational dependent) of
proceeds/fees go to the insurance fund
** we keep the room clean, and pursue cleaning deposit deductions
** get insurance as a collective UA!"
Thoughts, feedback, questions, concerns and especially meeting
attendance appreciated :)

PROPOSAL: NO DRINKING OF ALCOHOL ON SIDEWALKS OUTSIDE OMNI[EDIT]
* Proposal date: 2015-03-23
* Put forward by: DK
* Proposal that no alcohol is to be consumed on the sidewalks immediately outside the Omni by Omniers.
* Rationale:
+ Recent evidence that, and communication from, Omni neighbors who like the Omni generally but have shown that at least some will call the cops on 'drunk
people' hanging out outside Omni. The neighborhood is beginning to push back on this and we should respect that.
+ Drinking outside has also attracted local drunks who are not Omninoms with attendant safe space issues
+ This is a clear legal and liability issue for Omni. Cameras on buildings across the street record this activity 24x7 and this could be used to buttress any
argument against Omni as a solid, safe place for community gatherings.
+ We recognize that this practice began after a long hard day of working on the space - laying up drywall etc - that folks wanted to simply sit outside, take
a break and perhaps have a beer. However it shouldn't be the case that it is normal for having beers outside omni on a daily basis as inevitably trouble
will result.
+ This is not a proposal for omni to be a 'dry' space which would be pretty much impossible considering the need of the frequent fundraisers, 'socials',
ballroom rentals, etc. It is to say though that no alcoholic beverages are to be consumed in the immediate area outside the premises of Omni.

Arduino For Total Newbies
workshop at Noisebridge
Learn all you need to know to make cool projects with Arduino!
You've probably heard lots about Arduino. But if you don't know what it is, or how you can use it to do all sorts of cool things, then this fun and easy workshop is for you. As an example project, we'll be creating a TV-B-Gone remote control out of an Arduino you can take home with you.
Summary:
What: Arduino workshop for total newbies, using TV-B-Gone remote controls as an intro example project
When: 1:00pm to 4:30pm, Sunday, March 29th
Where: Noisebridge map (including where to push the buzzer)
Who: Anyone and everyone can have fun learning Arduino. Ages 10 to 100
Max #: 50 participants -- This workshop will fill up, so please arrive early!
-- Precedence given to those who register in advance at:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/arduino-for-total-newbies-workshop-tickets-160…
Cost: $35 -- includes everything you need!
And you get to bring your Arduino TV-B-Gone home with you.
Optional: $20 communications/programming cable
-- (some will be available to use for free during the workshop).
Instructor: Mitch
Register for the workshop:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/arduino-for-total-newbies-workshop-tickets-160…
Optional: Bring your laptop if you want to go home with the free Arduino software installed on it.
Arduino software runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux.
Description:
Arduino is an amazingly powerful tool that is very simple to learn to use. It was designed so that artists and non-geeks can start from nothing, and make something cool happen in less than 90 minutes. Yet, it is powerful enough so that uber-geeks can use it for their projects as well.
This workshop is easy enough for total newbies to learn all you need to know to get going on an Arduino.
Taught by Mitch Altman. Participants will make their own Arduino clone, and set it up on solderless breadboards to make their own TV-B-Gone remote control to turn off TVs in public places -- a fun way to learn Arduino (and electronics) basics. Bring your laptop, if you can.
Big thanks to Ken Shirriff, who came up with the original TV-B-Gone for Arduino.
Itinerary:
Intro to ArduinoVery short lesson to learn everything you need to know about electronics! Then we will learn to solder. Don't let this scare you! I've taught well over 50,000 people to solder, most of whom have never made anything before in their lives. It is actually a very easy skill to learn. It is also very useful. Then we will each make our own Arduino clone from a kit made by Evil Mad Scientist: DiavolinoNow that we each have our own Arduino, we will set up the free and open-source software on our laptops (if you bring one) -- Windows, MacOS, or Linux are all fine! And then its time to make something and learn how easy it is to use Arduino! I'll (very easily!) show you how to read schematic diagrams, and you'll put together your own TV-B-Gone remote control using your BoArduino. We will use a solderless breadboard. These are really useful, and provide a fast, and very easy way to put circuits together without needing to solder. Target practice is available after the workshop.
You are now ready to download and hack zillions of Arduino projects that are available for free online!
Best,
Mitch.
FYI, I moved a bunch of stuff that got pushed into CCL during the Sudo
cleanup last week back into Sudo. Including a bunch of wood, some slabs of
countertop marble/granite, and two black trunks that were blocking the fire
exit.
Is all the random junk piled up in front of the vending machines supposed
to get recycled / disposed off? I would greatly appreciate if someone could
take care of that.
Thanks!
Patrik

so i guess sudoroom (and CCL too probably) need some new lights, since the
flourescents are failing.
Home Despot sells 11-watt "warm white" bulbs for $9 each, which would be a
good idea if we had regular lamp sockets to screw bulbs into...
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cree-60W-Equivalent-Daylight-5000K-A19-Dimmable-…
but china can always do better. I looked on Ali Express and sorted by
customer satisfaction, looking for LED lighting in "downlights" which
suggests lamps shining downward?
these look good but the seller rating is only 97.4%:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-Aluminum-9W-15W-21W-27W-45W-LED…
they seem to be "16 to 21" watts for $6.95 including shipping. They offer
"warm" and "cold" flavors so we could just get a mix of the two kinds, for
something in the middle when they're all on.
here is the search i was doing:
http://www.aliexpress.com/category/200002289/led-downlights.html?site=glo&i…
this one is also a good price, and the seller rating is higher (98.1%)
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/21W-Antifogging-Epistar-led-downlight-AC85-2…
ultimately i have higher confidence in the quality of something we buy
from Cree at Home Despot, but I think we should give China a chance and
buy a few of the "16 to 21 watt" ones and see how they compare.
For reference, Cree (a reputable company) and other LED bulbs sold at Home
Despot are called "60 watt replacement" bulbs while actually using 9 to 11
watts. The light fixtures presently in Sudoroom and CCL each have two
75-watt flourescent bulbs, for a total of 900 watts of light in the bocce
ball room when they're all working.
That suggests that 150 watts of LED lighting would be equivalent, which
would cost about $60 from the first aliexpress link i provided.
These lights just have wires coming out, so we would perhaps attach them
onto the metal structures that are presently holding flourescent lights
for simplicity, until we come up with something better.

Just saw these on CraigsList. I'll be out of town this weekend, and don't
own a truck anyway, but it would be awesome if someone could arrange to
pick these up in Alameda. $90 for three 3x5 racks of 1fx1ft lockers. Not
entirely clear whether the $90 is for all three racks, but even at $90 a
piece this would be a steal!
I'm happy to personally pay $90 for all three (in which case I'lll donate
one to the Omni), or $90 for just one rack for CCL. My eternal gratitude
and 2000 Biohacker Credits (*) to whomever volunteers to pick them up!

(*) Worth 2 beers
Have to:
- Move more pews upstairs from basement
- Mop ballroom floor
- consolidate crap on ballroom stage
- wipe down bathrooms (they are already fairly clean).
- install lighting fixture in upstairs bathroom (already procured)
- installing lighting fixture to light Shattuck-side
balcony stairscase (not yet procured).
The renter is coming at 4pm today so I need everything done before then.
Laura came yesterday and helped clean the ballroom bar area, and joel,
sean, Troy and other helped clear the ballroom of big 'ugly' stuff
(scaffolding, bookcase, wardrobe, etc)
Late notice but - any helps?
Sorry I haven't been around much recently. Some things have come up and I
don't have nearly as much time as I used to. Unfortunately, this means I
can't be around for newbie night anymore. Is there anyone interested in
taking over? At a minimum, it entails being present on Wednesdays from 5:00
to 7:00 and giving tours to folks who come by.
Missing y'all,
null
Long story short, I might have left my bose headphones on the table at
hack night.
If anyone sees them, please let me know!
Cheers,

Dear all
Here is a reminder that Francisco's benefit dinner will take place this
friday at 7pm (details in the email below).
Thank you for your warm answers so far!
And if you haven't, it's still time to give me a sign so I get a rough idea
