There is this fancy food startup in San Francisco which donates a meal for every meal purchased: https://munchery.com/how-it-works/ Apparently "we provide a meal for someone in need" means their truck drives around various places in Oakland until it's empty. And the Omni has become the truck's last stop, which means this will happen every Saturday. I counted 150+ packaged meals this run. solid-ink printer for printing circuits

pidgeon (human) trying to squat sudoroom / the omni

last night (sunday) as the last of us were getting ready to leave after a long day of BACH, i noticed that Pidgeon was sitting alone in CCL with headphones in and using a laptop. [pidgeon prefers the pronoun "they" but it is a single person] knowing that this person made trouble at noisebridge in the past, and assuming that they were trying to squat the omni, i went up and gave notice that "we are getting ready to leave and close up" and Pidgeon took the hint and started packing up their backpack... twenty minutes later pidgeon was still slowly gathering things together to get ready to leave.. it was annoyingly obvious that they were trying to delay leaving so that I would leave first and they could stay. tonight, Korl mentioned that Pidgeon was present but did not seem to be anyone's guest, and I agreed that they were here without anyone's sponsorship of any kind. A person with no member-sponsor present can be asked to leave for no reason, but before doing that I went to speak with others present about the situation. No one present claimed Pidgeon as their guest, or objected to asking them to leave. I mentioned this to marc and started posting the following to irc: https://www.noisebridge.net/pipermail/noisebridge-discuss/2014-February/042… https://www.noisebridge.net/pipermail/noisebridge-discuss/2013-October/0399… a minute later marc returned from a "sweep" of the building and found Pidgeon in a downstairs room with the door pulled shut, getting comfortable, lying on their belly listening to music. Marc asked if they were part of a collective, Pidgeon said they were not, and Marc said that we are not open to the public and asked them to leave. please be aware that people are already trying to squat the omni and it will only get more intense. I have no patience for this because I feel that the omni is more valuable to us as a community space, shared for all, rather than a big building to be turned into private quarters for the few who care little enough about their community to do something like that. Noisebridge regularly has problems with people sleeping on top of the elevator, above the loft areas, and in the basement of the building, and their building is not nearly as cavernous and expansive as ours. -jake

Beehive Design Collective – event at Omni, Oct 21

Hey Omni booking folks + Sudo and friends, The Beehive Collective was told by UC to relocate their Tuesday, Oct 21 event. They reached out to Omni through friends at the Gill Tract (see occupythefarm.org). I know it's last minute, but there doesn't seem to be anything on the calendar, so I put a hold for them. Their request is to show their giant, portable murals about global issues of all kinds at Omni, 6:30–9pm Tuesday, with appx. 25–50 guests. They are an all-volunteer group on tour but can chip in some $ to Omni. Before I confirm it this event I want to ask, *Does anyone have any blocking concerns about this event?* For more details, here's the blurb: Based out of small-town Machias across the country in rural Maine, the Beehive Design Collective is an all-volunteer organization of activists, artists, educators and organizers. Our main focus is creating and presenting graphic works about global issues internationally. These portable murals are teeming with intricate images of plants and animals, illustrating surreal but meticulously researched scenes of sociocultural realities in the modern world. At tonight's Sudoroom meeting, there were no major objections to BDRM2 ("the eyeball room") becoming dedicated and lockable for Backspace, or to the DEN and STORAGE1 being schedulable commons where Backspace gets priority. The biggest concern is that the Public School would still have room for its evening classes, but we don't have enough info to speak for them obviously. Just curious - even though we all seem to be converging on a pattern of scheduled multi-use space, there's still this distinction between these rooms being "administered by Backspace" and "administered by the commons working group." I know Backspace prefers the former, but can you say a little about why, and what is the meaningful difference for you? Is it the worry about being scheduled out? Is it the desire for veto power over the layout and aesthetic of the spaces? Thanks. Lastly, Matt pointed out some issues with how the money is being framed: > We would pay $1000 per month starting in October. Is this a typo? It's not just a semantic problem - that $2k deposit went to the landlord, and not to the Omni. This pretends that Omni saw $1k that we didn't actually see. Also, IANAL (I Am Not A Lawyer) but it's a scary legal grey area for a landlord to redefine deposit money as rent money. It might be better to be honest about what happened instead of retconning it, and just say that Omni is now giving Backspace a second chance to exist at Omni with a grace period and a new "lease on life." Just a thought.

I feel like we're reaching at each other through a fog of fear, uncertainty and doubt, trying to make high-stakes decisions that might affect us all years into the future, when we only have a few months or even weeks of experience being in some of our spaces and learning to know and trust all the people. There are so many rooms with different names. It's been 24 hours since your proposal and it's taken us this long just to be sure exactly which rooms you're talking about. There's confusion over what commoning means (the commons wg only started meeting 2 weeks ago), what scheduling will feel like (we're still developing the calendar system), what the rooms will look and feel like, whether people will clean up their messes like they say they will, and any number of hypothetical scarcities and disasters that we have no idea if the future might bring. It's not your fault, it's not anybody else's fault either. I really hope the confusion isn't interpreted as bad faith or a lack of support. We all need to get better at that, of course, but also get better at forgiving each others' mistakes, in the spirit of jubilee. Sorry for the rant, but thanks for listening. <3

Looks like Backspace does want STORAGE2, the former TIL office. I'm not sure if it's ADA accessible, haven't been in there since June. This makes it sort of ambiguous since at Sudoroom meeting discussion we assumed it was STORAGE1. Will need more time to make sure we are all still ok with this. Sorry again. Also, to address other concerns in this thread, IMO a good software setup will solve a *lot* of the issues around space sharing and scheduling. If we make it easy to schedule events and easy to see what's scheduled, that could go a very long way. Jenny and I are still working on that new calendar system and plan to put some good hacking hours into it in the next few days.

SolaRPi update!

OK folks sorry for the late follow up, but I finally got a chance to tinker with this some more and was able to serve up a website from the raspberry pi using node.js, running of course on a battery rather than solar panels as it was about midnight by that time. Big thanks to The Doctor who recompiled node on his B+ over the better part of a day. I recommend following this link and using this package if you want to set node up on your RPi. Our vision is an equitable commoning of resources and meeting of human needs over private interests or corporate profit. Our values include radical commoning of space and resources, liberation of knowledge, and transformative justice. We stand in solidarity with struggles against capitalism, racism, transmisogyny, and other forms of violence. As Omni is a commons, we dedicate the majority of the monthly calendar to events that build our communities. For event rentals, we prioritize requests from individuals/groups aligned with our vision and values, and we reserve the right to decline requests from groups that oppose our vision and values. Omni considers all event inquiries and booking requests submitted. In situations where a member group in Omni voices a concern about an event, we work in good faith with individuals/groups making the booking request to address any concerns in a mutually-satisfactory way before confirming events. Fee Structure We offer competitive rates for various groups. The fee structure below is provided as a summary. We evaluate the final fee for each event on a case-by-case basis, depending on impact on the space. $300–1,000 per 4 hour rental, Monday through Thursday $400–1,200 per 4 hour rental, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Rental time includes setup and cleanup. They want to do renovations to make it clean and safe enough for bodywork sessions, and the bodyworkers want to be able to have final say over the layout and aesthetics of the room.

robot has rectangular coordinate support now!!!

so in other words, you changed the robot from position mode to rectangular mode, and now when you save jobs it saves them in rectangular coordinates!??! that's awesome!!! that means we can now use inkscape to make paths and translate them to robot moves! we can put a sharpie in its hand and make it draw a doge! all thanks to the secret password, which is 24.#4.#2 !!!! is anyone good at inkscape? we need to figure out how to scale a path to the coordinates range we are actually working with. It's sort of unclear in the proposal, but from what I understand Backspace is only asking to lock ONE room for dedicated space - the "eyeball room" upstairs with the large circular window. The "bunker room" under the staircase would only be locked when in active use, and the "den" upstairs would always be unlocked and schedulable, with Backspace getting scheduling priority. Do I understand that right? Also, people are calling that bunker room "ADA accessible", but sadly it is not. Yes, there are no extra steps from the wheelchair lift, but the doors are narrow and there is hardly any turning radius.

We already have two paired lines with two phone #s, so I think all we need to do is wire up the other one. We could try to change the payment setup, although Sonic gave us grief for trying that at 2141, which was why we switched to LMI. :/ I just put this month's bill on the wiki: https://sudoroom.org/wiki/Example_Internet_Bill As you can see, the way they charge us is complicated. It's $140 but most of that obviously goes to internet, including line items that non-Sudoers probably don't care about like static IP address. All the tiny fees for phone service probably add up to ~$10 per line on their own.

kitchen wg report-back

I went to this Sunday's kitchen working group meeting. Some things to know: 1/3 of the industrial stove is working. The other 2/3 needs new parts which Joe can get for the very discounted price of $300. I propose that Omni collectives pay for this since we will be using it a lot. They are working on replacing the large water boiler with a tiny instant heater, cutting & rotating the large metal basin sink, and installing the 3-basin sink from Noisebridge via CCL between that and the stove. They would like to open up the northwest part of the room by disassembling the old shelves & countertops, and removing the street-facing drywall to expose the windows hidden behind them. Does anybody know if the landlords have been notified of this kitchen work yet? Do we need to write up more detailed plans before doing this stuff? The downstairs kitchen will not have room for any of our appliances from upstairs such as fridges or stoves. FNB cooks are already concerned about space being too tight. We will have to keep the fridges out in the basement common area, or somewhere else in the building. We may not need the electric stoves once the wolf range is fully lit. Joe will find another home for the chest freezer, as it belonged to him and apparently nobody has used it here.

Sudoroom incorporated last year as a California Nonprofit, which is structured with the intent to apply for federal 501c3. This year we officially decided to do it, after many months of arguing over whether other subsections (501c4, etc) were a better fit. But we never actually followed up with the IRS. We still have to file our 1023 to officially ask for 501c3 status. THEN begins the multi-year process of waiting for approval. But we haven't even entered the waiting room yet. It's a very long-standing action item. Let's do it!

attempted robbery outside omni

Last night, Sunday Oct. 12th at about 11:30 PM about four of us were sitting outside omni on the chairs behind the stop sign. A few people came up on a diagonal path toward us, but many of them did not seem headed toward us. One person seemed to be pulling or pushing another younger person with him, and they were headed closest to us. Then this guy started acting weird, stuck both of his hands deep into his pants (which were very loose) and started moving in and out of peoples personal spaces. He said something i don't remember, and I asked him what he was doing. but then he said "How much money y'all got?" everyone answered "none, we don't have any money." making it clear that we were not intimidated. He said he was going to "blast" the place up, trying to suggest that he had a gun and he was going to start shooting. I don't think any of the other people in his group were supporting his actions, at least they were not close to us. Maybe the small person he had been pushing/pulling but i don't remember. Then he started getting in my personal space, and I thought that he might try something physical with us, or try to grab someone's bag (like mine) so the next time he moved back, I jumped up and ran inside the omni, yelling "I AM CALLING THE POLICE!" out the door. I think he moved to grab or follow me inside, but the others outside stood up and complicated things for him. I ran inside and stashed my bag and told people inside to come outside right away. Someone grabbed a fire extinguisher in case a weapon was needed, but when we got outside he was already leaving I think. The point is, we should discuss best practices in situations like these, and also discuss a sign that should be placed inside the omni advising people who will be sitting outside to prepare for this type of situation. probably a sign reminding people of the possibility of this or worse happening, and a suggestion to avoid being alone outside, especially with your laptop or phone out, especially late at night, unless you are aware and prepared for what might happen. this situation worked out well enough, but it could have gone differently. this certainly will not be the last time something like this happens. -jake

Film Night Tonight

Pair programming station and caster callout

pair programming is a great way to learn and share computer skills. It is best practiced at a desk where both people can see the same screen, and each other's face at the same time - and each person has their own keyboard and mouse. as you can see here, I made a pair programming station (with help) for us: http://spaz.org/~jake/pix/sudo/IMG_20141010_021851.jpg it has everything it needs except for ONE MORE USB MOUSE so if you have an extra, bring it on. ideally a matching DELL mouse. also, it has a bad caster wheel on it, which looks like this: http://spaz.org/~jake/pix/sudo/IMG_20141010_022958.jpg this is a picture of the good one. If you have a caster like this that is not broken, please bring it in and put it on the cart. i'm trying to make it have wireless (it's a desktop computer right now) which means learning about openWRT, to make a wifi bridge to ethernet. That way wherever the cart is, it will have internet with spare ethernet ports, for your beaglebone or whatever you're hacking on to plug into. but of course, you don't need to use the computer on the cart - you can plug the VGA cable into your laptop and the USB cable (one for both keyboards and mice) into your laptop, and use that. the two monitors are hard-wired to a single VGA cable, and don't try to change it. i had to make that cable. and the screens are screwed down. enjoy! -jake

Internet speedz? mb up & down?

Hey all, there's a 48hr live broadcast of hackathon-like happenings around the world, HQ'd at Omni Nov 15 & 16. It's called Deconstruction (see thedeconstruction.org) and it consists of a small crew of people on-site to manage the video feed and possibly tour Omni. The organizers asked me about Internet bandwidth... I haven't speed-tested anything and figured there were folks who knew our capacity better. Does anyone know the typical and min/max Internet upload/download heft? Might it be >10mb? >20mb? curious, thanks, Danny
