hi Julian,
the sudoroom laser cutter is totally available for you to use. I'm CC'ing this
email to the sudoroom-discuss email list to find someone who can show you how
to use it, unless you're confident that you don't need to be shown anything.
when you use it, please make sure the ventilation fan near it is running, and
check the duct connections because they have been falling off recently, which
results in the room being filled with laser fumes despite the fan running.
thank you

Hi all,
I'm working on a long-term project to build a, say, 8 x 20 matrix display.
Each "pixel" hopefully maybe 2"x2" big. Hopefully one day to mount on the
wall in sudoroom and allow people to throw up text and Atari characters
etc. This is related to noisebridge display, but with a different
aesthetic. Is there a spot on the sudoroom website where I could document
my progress on this project, blog style? Otherwise I guess I would use
traditional blogging platform.
Thanks,
The Cap'n
Hey sudoers,
[cross-posting from mesh list]
Have you been dying to help build the People's Open Network, but aren't sure where to start. Maybe you've heard about our mysterious node mounts, but don't have a smartphone or aren't part of some __super secretive chat group__. Or perhaps you'd just like help selecting a local ISP for your new apartment. Fear not, we're here to help.
Starting this Sunday, Feb. 4th, SudoMesh be holding regular "office hours" on Sunday afternoons in SudoRoom. Running …
[View More]loosely from 1pm until late afternoon or early evening, this time serves dual purpose:
1. A jumping off point for people interested helping with a scheduled Sunday node mount, but who are not able to attend a Tuesday night meeting or are not "in the know."
2. A friendly, non-confrontational time for new people to get oriented to the project or just ask general questions about networking, the internet, and their service provider.
Finally, when either of these purposes are not present (i.e. no node mount, no new people), we will use the time to hold training sessions on a topic of choice, conduct outreach to potential node locations, address finances and purchasing, or tackle any other outstanding issues.
For this Sunday, we do not have a scheduled node mount yet and do not expect new people (since this just now being announced). Instead, we will be doing basic training on how lead or participate in a node mount. We will also be contacting and scheduling our existing list of node requests.
If you'd like to help out, stop by SudoRoom on Sunday, Feb. 4th, around 1pm.
Thanks and hope to see y'all on Sundays,
-grant

We have implemented a web-based print server proxy in sudoroom so that
you can print PDF files without installing printer drivers. The printer
is upstairs.

the rightmost vending machine now has a working dollar bill acceptor, and it's
powered up. it's connected to an arduino which connects to a raspberry pi
which is on the network at vending2.local
on that raspberry pi there is a serial port called
/dev/serial/by-id/usb-Arduino_LLC_Arduino_Leonardo-if00
which speaks serial at 115200 baud, saying stuff like
100 bill_acceptor
2000 bill_acceptor
500 bill_acceptor
when it gets a $1 bill, a $20, and a $5 respectively. Later it will say
…
[View More]coin_acceptor when coins are inserted, but presently they just fall into a
cardboard box inside the vending machine.
Charley has acquired a new lock for the vending machine and we should replace
the money box in the fridge with a sign saying people should put their money
into the vending machine, and signs in the vending machine explaining that.
The raspberry pi in the vending machine has speakers attached to it (which will
be moved to underneath the machine or on top of it) and someone should make a
webpage on it that shows the time and amount of money inserted, and also make
it say things when people put money in so that everybody knows.
if anyone wants access to the raspberry pi please let me know. Make it do
things. Make it have a video output that we can put on top of the vending
machine that displays interesting information and QR codes for receiving
bitcoin cash and ethereum and other stuff donations. Make it make interesting
noises to reward people for donating.
tonight will be a fine night for hacking on the machine, but you'll need to
contact me or Charley for physical access to the inside of the machine for now.

A few months ago about a dozen Core 2 Duo Lenovo boxes with 4 GB of RAM
materialized in the basement hall way. They were all left running with
the monitors on, but they had Windohs on them and the lock screens
required a password which was nowhere in evidence, and rebooting also
required a PW to log in. Anywho, since they just seemed to be heating
the basement, and it was summertime anyway I shut them all off, and did
so a couple of weeks later when I noticed they were powered back on
…
[View More]again. Since then they have mostly been off, and some folks know the
password and have been using them periodically. Someone blew Linux Mint
on one of the boxen.
The one on the far left (facing the wall) was unplugged, I plugged it
back in but it was beeping whenever it booted, but just required that I
open the case and clamp down the memory sticks, All Praise Cyber Jesus.
Since I had revived box from the dead like Lazarus I felt like no one
would object if I made it dual boot Linux as well as Windows 10. The
machines are mostly empty and have 300-500 GB hard drives, so I hacked
off 60 GB and copied a Debian 9 installation off of a flash drive, fixed
the fstab, installed grub, and set the machine to boot Windoze by
default. The USB wifi sticks are the only way for these things to get
internet since there is no ethernet cable in that hallway, but I managed
to get one working with Debian and it seems stable.
So unless someone objects I propose to set the rest of the machines to
boot automatically into Windows (and not require a PW when the screen
blanks) and also, I'd whack off a small chunk of their hard drives so
all the boxes dual boot Windows and Debian stable (except possibly the
Mint box, it may have been installed to stomp on the whole drive). It
will give me something to do and keep me out of the sun. This will not
adversely effect the Windows installations, which will still be
available to do whatever folks do in that OS.
Attached is a picture of the machine I mucked with, folks can go down
there and play around with it. As those of you are wise in the ways of
dual booting know, you can select Linux by using the "up arrow" key on
the keyboard to scroll to the Debian 9 "grub" entry and hit the Enter
key. It will automatically boot to a non-privileged "omni" account (PW:
omnivore) and it will hang for a few seconds at the lightdm display
manager to give you a chance to change the Linux desktop to taste (I
configured it for mate, xfce, cinnamon & KDE, and could add other
options if desired). You can also switch users to a "sudoroom" user,
that has sudo privileges, the PW is the same as the username, except in
drop case.
In a world without Gates who needs Windows?
Special Ed

the card reader at the front door is missing & the camera is disconnected.
i don't want to point fingers but, as i left a fairly empty building last
night, i noticed Rich (used to come around sudo) sitting next to the door
if anyone knows where another swiper is, i'll start connecting it back up
thx
