Welcome to CityCampOak 2016!
Join hundreds of Oaklanders on February 6th for a day of making our
democracy stronger, our communities more connected and our local government
better at the fourth annual CityCamp Oakland; hosted by OpenOakland, the
City of Oakland and key community organizations.
If youâve wanted to talk with other Oaklanders about issues of civic
engagement, better technology in government, transparency, accessibility of
government services, ways community can work together, business development
or education- this is a great place for all of those conversations. At
CityCamp Oakland *you* get to pitch sessions youâre passionate about, lead
them yourself or gather with like minded Oaklanders to connect and
collaborate.
CityCamp is an unstructured conference where engaged Oaklanders like
yourself combine forces with city officials, techies, software developers,
civic leaders and journalists. We know many things can be improved in
Oakland and we believe in the power of communities to bring about those
changes - CityCamp Oakland is one way to connect our diverse communities
with common goals.
This year our featured speakers are mayor-elect Libby Schaaf who has
supported open data transparency efforts and civic innovation as a
CouncilMember, along with Jose Corona, the City of Oaklandâs Director of
Equity and Strategic Partnerships, nationally recognized for his work
leading Inner City Advisors (ICA) in overseeing a portfolio of local
companies to create 3,000 new jobs, generating over $150 million in wealth
for local residents and increasing the percentage of Oakland residents
being hired by ICA companies to 73 percent over the past ten years. More
speakers to be announced shortly.

I may or may not be able to make it tonight, but I just wanted to say
that I'm really happy The Mess wants to be part of Omni, I
enthusiastically give my consent to our delegate saying "yes"
tomorrow, and I encourage others to do the same! Thank you!
They came to our last Omni meeting, and we took notes. You can read
the whole discussion here, with many questions answered:

Hi sudoers,
I am borrowing some kinects for an augmented reality project. I only need
one but many are labeled "bad" so I took a bunch, if anyone needs one hit

goodies in the pile for you scavengers out there, anyone able to make it to
omni tomorrow by 11am??

I always wondered about this. So the people with money are the ones
who decide who gets their money. Seems like the decisionmaking process
is tilted towards people who are middle class and wealthier, right?
Has there ever been talk about sponsoring decisionmakers who don't
have $100/mo to spare? That'd be awesome.
This is your chance to spend a few hours this weekend supporting local

*Description*
âThis is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the
tranquilizing drug of gradualismâ -Martin Luther King, Jr.
Over the last year, in the Bay Area alone, there have been dozens of police
murders. In San Francisco, we have most recently seen the brutal execution
of Mario Woods, in addition to police beating a disabled man in front of
the Twitter building and racist text messages exchanged between SFPD
on-duty officers.
In Oakland, we have seen 8 Black men murdered by police since only June of
2015. In fact, a recent graphic by Mapping Police Violence shows that in
2015, Oakland ranks third in police killings per million people in 60 of
America's largest cities. (https://www.facebook.com/

Police are the shock troops of gentrification. Mayors give them a mandate:
make this city appealing to developers by any means necessary. City
Councils fund police and constantly seek to expand their numbers and their
powers. As a result, people of color are being pushed out of cities at
unprecedented rates, by an out of control rental market, increased police
occupation and terrorism against communities of color, as well as
crackdowns on those who dare protest these unjust policies.
A year ago, people across the country began taking to the streets in
unprecedented numbers; storming shopping centers, blocking streets and
highways, interrupting cultural events and public transit. And the people
SHUT IT DOWN. We SHUT IT DOWN because there is a state-sponsored war on
Black, Brown, and other marginalized peoples in the United States. WE SHUT
DOWN BUSINESS-AS-USUAL because business-as-usual is an out-of-control
epidemic of police terror.
Last year, in partnership with comrades and allies, APTP launched 96 Hours
of Direct Action in the Bay Area, and answered a national call to Reclaim
Kingâs Radical Legacy which we did through a march that brought over 7,000
people into the streets of Oakland. We believe it is important for our
movement to draw on Kingâs legacy to ground ourselves, to reinforce our
conviction and confidence in the tactics and strategy of disruptive direct
action.
A year later, while we are starting to have an impact, we also see that we
have a long long way to go. So this Martin Luther King Day weekend,
Oaklandâs Anti Police-Terror Project* is calling on you to help us SHUT IT
DOWN - again. Together, we will unleash the vast creativity and organizing
capacity of our communities to produce a spectrum of disruptive and
creative activity. In the spirit of MLK, we want these to actions to
meaningfully interrupt business as usual whether that be with direct
action, teach-ins, concerts or prayer vigils and to do so with action logic
that links our resistance to fighting racism, economic injustice, and
imperialism. We want you to plan these actions independently, but together
we will coordinate collective support for these actions through a
spokescouncil so that they have maximal support and impact.
The weekend will once again culminate in a King Day march that embodies the
true spirit of King's resistance to capitalism, imperialism and racism:

WE DEMAND:
The resignation of Mayor Libby Schaaf
The immediate termination of Chief Sean Whent
The immediate termination of Chief Greg Suhr
The immediate termination of the officers involved in the murders of
Richard Perkins, Mario Woods, Yuvette Henderson, Amilcar Lopez, Alex Nieto,
Demoriah Hogg and Richard Linyard
The immediate reallocation of city budgets: reduce police budgets and
reallocate those funds to provide for affordable housing that allows Black,
Brown and other people of color to remain in San Francisco and Oakland.
This year, we shut it down in the names of:
Yuvette Henderson
Nate Wilks
Richard Perkins
Richard Linyard
Demoriah Hogg
Yonas Alehegne
Amilcar Lopez
Mario Woods
Alex Nieto

I've been a trustee of the SF chapter of the Awesome Foundation since it started in the summer of 2010. Since then we've given a $1,000 grant, no strings attached, to over 60 awesome projects that people have submitted to our website.
There's a new Oakland chapter starting up, and they're looking for trustees. Here's what's required to be a trustee:
* a sense of awesome
* put in $100 per month
* the ability to read through lots of projects once a month and show up to a meeting to consense upon an awesome project with the other 9 trustees
The Awesome Foundation is not an "official" non-profit. It's totally anarchy. There are over 80 Awesome Foundation chapters around the world. Collectively we've given away $1,875,000 to 1,875 projects since 2010.

If you're interested in being part of the new Oakland Awesome Foundation chapter, please email me off-list.
Best,
Mitch.
Hi all, in case you haven't heard -- Wikipedia is celebrating its 15th
birthday this week, and we're celebrating Saturday!
We'll have several presentations throughout the afternoon, ranging from the
"weird old days" of early Wikipedia, to gender bias in the encyclopedia's
content. I will be hosting a panel with various perspectives on the
significance of Wikipedia from a journalist, an education specialist, and a
social justice activist. I've posted interviews

the panelists.
If you are curious about, a fan of, or a contributor to Wikipedia, I urge

The event is free, but advance registration is required -- and it's almost
