lead free solder sucks! and we are pretty low on non-lead-free solder. If anyone has extra rolls of regular lead solder (often labeled "rosin core" or Pb 63) and you want to store it at sudoroom, it will help. people new to solder often get frustrated when they don't realize they're trying to use lead-free solder, which sucks. Also the flux is toxic compared to the literal pine sap that's in regular solder. -jake

An idea - 💡 why is SudoRoom unique in this place and time and history and how has it uniquely impacted you? Thinking of a series of blog posts with people (we can use anonymous pseudonyms) There is nothing like SudoRoom and no place on the world that is like Oakland. We are the most original city in the United States 🇺🇸 If we express that it will also segue nicely into the unique projects we’ve made. I don’t think our mix of Brains and creativity can be found in quite the same way on another hackerspace !

Missed Opportunities: Reaching out to the arts - Adding SudoRoom to arts-focused community lists + visiting Museums

I have been adding sudoRoom events to the Decentered Arts list - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1eX21lRIMOl3LLUhanRptk0jWbKoyZJV… It's a great place, and there are artists hanging out and doing slide shows of their art in people's homes. I think a missed opportunity that I could have done better on is reaching out to people in the arts who need a place to work and play. Artist are natural hackers. We do have a large ballroom, ideal places for weekly meetups of slides and artist stuff. And artists often build stuff with robots and explore areas like agumetnd reality. *We should always focus on what makes us special* if we only focus on "hackers" and biotech we have stiff competition, as Noisebridge is more well-funded and has more active nights (we love them though) Also, as Peter explained to me, UC Berkeley and Laney nowadays have extremely clean and well-equipped makerspace labs, and of course stuff is closer on campus. Due to gentrification we have also lost a large contingent of cool happy go lucky artsy mathematician and computer science types, and we're not in downtown Oakland. But the arts scene is pretty big in Oakland, and artists are hackers! I could have done better on this! ============================= Romy Ilano romy(a)snowyla.com

THEME: OCTAVIA BUTLER OCTAVIA BUTLER IS OUR THEME ON THIS HARDWARE HACK NIGHT AS WE MIX AI, PRINT MAGAZINES, AND MORE! *This week’s theme:* Print is hardware too! And what better muse can we imagine than *Octavia Butler,* science fiction Goddess. We’ll have a pre-hardware hack night presentation on creative ways to mix print with electronics, use artificial intelligence in the most open source and ethical way, and work on our SudoRoom print zine! Throw in some 3D models into the mix too! *e are inside the Omni Commons at 48th and Shattuck, see the link at the end of this text to call in in case the doors are locked!* ○ *Projects:* can range from building course materials for teaching local kids electronics to a robotic arm that draws, to light projection art, to people building their own microchip boards! We provide the space, tools and peer learning – you bring your project and enthusiasm! *○ Group Sewing:* Learn to do simple mending or get help with technical fabric and textile projects. In addition to regular machines our Sewing Lab features heavy-duty industrial sewing machines and sergers.
