this message came into another list, does anyone want a blender that probably needs cleaning (i'm guessing the smell is that food got into the motor?) -jake ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2024 17:46:55 -0700 From: Erika Weinheimer <erika.weinheimer(a)icloud.com> Subject: Blender for repair donation? Hi! I have a blender that’s *mostly* working. It works but smells of burning rubber, so likely something that is an easy repair. Would y’all be interested in a donation of this? I was luckily able to upgrade, and don’t want to throw the old one out. Let me know and I’m happy to drop it off at Omni Commons. Thanks, Erika

9/21 - great hybrid event at SudoRoom do go! Common Tools for Common Socio-Environmental Problems! (hybrid)

by Romy Mimi Ilano

https://lu.ma/wd747lxq Folks there's a great event on September 21st - do go! it looks like it's going to be awesome!!!!! *Common Tools for Common Socio-Environmental Problems <https://sudoroom.org/announcing-a-hybrid-skill-sharing-event-common-tools-f…>* *An hybrid event for skill-sharing and knowledge exchange* How can we help each other make sense and respond to pressing socio-technical-and-environmental problems? Looking in our past and present we can find collaborative tools, approaches, and sociocultural practices to answer this question. Join us for an evening of presentations, skill-sharing workshops, and artistic performances at Sudoroom, your friendly neighborhood hackerspace! *!!! Donations will be requested to help support the community space and the artists !!!* *Format:* Hybrid with in-person and online presentations *ABSTRACTS* *Paths to assistive technology: Repair & DIY, Right to Repair, and Reverse Engineering* by *Liz Henry* *There is a lot of home-grown wisdom in disabled communities about adapting or making "assistive tech" - things like wheelchair modifications, small devices that make life easier. And there are inventors---often disabled inventors---creating super complicated devices as well. There are also books, papers, and research with plans for DIY assistive tech. Grassroots Open Assistive Tech aims to collect, preserve, and propagate that info and encourage the use of open licensing to make ecosystems for building & sharing so that more people can get the adaptive equipment they need!* *Community Digital Territories: Baobáxia* *by Vince - Casa de Cultura Tainã / Rede Mocambos* *“The idea comes from the Baobab, an African tree that lives for thousands of years and symbolically represents the collective memory of the territory. Baobáxia is the union of baobabs with galaxies. Galaxies of memories of community territories, on the Baobab Route, on the Path of the Stars..” Baobab is a network of mucuas, computers with free software, GNU/Linux, operating on the community network through the local Wi-Fi, even without internet. The mucuas host different galaxies of knowledge and digital applications such as collections, maps, blogs. All mocambolas can share their knowledge in the form of audio, videos, articles, documents, images, maps and soon much more. The knowledge of each mucua can be synchronized with the others, over the internet or on the local network through mobile mucuas. A mucua can be a very robust computer, like Madiba, which is located at the Community Data Center of the Tainã Cultural Center, or even a simple USB stick. This way, knowledge is maintained in our territories and shared on our networks. Baobáxia is created by Rede Mocambos, a collaboration between quilombolas, indigenous peoples, Nartisans, and artists from all over Brazil and beyond.* *The WBSW (Wheelchair Battery Spot Welder)* *by Criptastic Hacker* *An eco-soluton to reporposing batteries for useful projects! Every year, many thousands of large lead-acid batteries from wheelchairs are discarded to landfill because they don't offer enough torque for the motors to push a human across city blocks, or even around the house. However, these batteries still have a lot of instantaneous JUICE to create--- sparks! * *This project repurposes my old wheelchair batteries into a fully functional portable spot welder. With spot welding, you can repurpose EVEN MOAR by taking recycled laptop and car Li-ion and LifePo cells and creating new packs from them -- for your DIY projects like robots, outdoor sound systems, and so much moar! * *It's reporposing batteries to repurpose batteries. And since the materials used in batteries are some of the most toxic to our planet and have major health and worker rights issues around the materials mining for them, getting the most life out of them possible - and de-investing from that industry - is very good for both people and the planet.* *Resisting Contextual Collapse: How an Internet of Places (iPlaces) can help Field Stations and Marine Labs Operationalize FAIR and CARE Principles for Environmental Sustainability and Social Justice* by Erin Robinson & Neil Davies *Research stations help scientists gather data at source and witness the resilience and fragility of our planet firsthand. Despite their role in understanding the complex physical, biogeochemical, ecological, social, and economic interactions that constitute place, station contributions and those of the local community often remain unrecognized. Metadata describing the samples/data they help originate is too easily stripped or lost as value is added downstream. To fight this “contextual collapse,” we present a new publishing platform (iPlaces) that empowers investigators to publish descriptions of their field projects (marker papers) in a station journal, providing each project with a landing page and a digital object identifier. Through the familiar manuscript review process (with the station director acting as editor), iPlaces introduces a way to layer ethical, legal, social, and scientific metadata to field research. Part of a collaborative ecosystem, iPlaces links and leverages a suite of online services (e.g., GEOME, ORCID, DataCite, iSamples, Local Contexts), promoting their uptake in place-based research. In this talk, I will focus on our recent work with Local Contexts, where iPlaces enables a station to issue ‘notices’ for a proposed project, thus initiating dialogue with local communities and combatting “parachute science”. Communities can then issue ‘labels’, a form of social metadata (e.g., Prior Informed Consent), to projects and their downstream field samples/data, helping to operationalize CARE as well as FAIR data principles. As data and samples move downstream, value-added products are linked automatically through the global open science infrastructure, ensuring the connection back to place (the station and its associated communities). iPlaces thus positions stations as crucial partners connecting nature and communities to the global research enterprise, supporting scientific discovery and environmental stewardship in the service of people, places, and planet. * *Community Science Air Quality Monitoring for Environmental Justice * by José Ramon Becerra Vera *Open hardware and community science provide populations overburdened by pollution with the tools, knowledge, and data to advocate for environmental justice. Communities are often the first to notice pollution in their homes and neighborhoods. Yet, they are frequently excluded from scientific research that follows initial reports of smells, tastes, and health symptoms. This disconnect misses the opportunity to teach communities about pollution while neglecting local experiences that could help understand exposure, identify toxic sources and high concentrations, and contribute to environmental science. Implementing open technologies like DIY air monitors in community science can teach and empower participants as experts in instrumentation, data, and analysis and enable communities to explore research questions shaped by their unique experiences. Open hardware allows pollution-affected communities to harness their lived experiences, newly developed expertise and collected environmental data to drive meaningful environmental justice efforts.* *Air Quality* by Eseibio Halliday aka "The Revolutionary Eseibio The Automatic" *Rap song written by Eseibio will be performed live to close the event.* After all the presentations, we will continue on with a free-form skill-sharing / hacking session until it is time to catch the last train home. Sudo Room member banned from Omni Commons

by Ashley T

I am checking if the Sudo Room received info about a member being banned from Omni Commons. Sierk was banned by a Food Not Bombs member yesterday and the ban went into effect immediately for the whole Omni building. Highlighted information of Sierk being banned by FNB member: "Sierk - I think not making Omni your home and being open to receiving proper medic care will help you.* *- It would be better if you don't repeat the dishonesty in your response to volunteers so they can better help you.**- Please remove all your belongings and yourself from the building.* *You are no longer welcome in the space due to the numerous concerns mentioned.**- Currently there are no mediations nor restorative justice planned (from me anyway) since it may be too late, we didn't prioritize the incidents when it first occurred.* *-If you can, do some reflecting and reach out to whoever you feel comfortable speaking with.*" [ebfnb] Sierk update*Toan Nguyen* guqinone at gmail.com <ebfnb%40lists.omnicommons.org?Subject=Re%3A%20%5Bebfnb%5D%20Sierk%20update&In-Reply-To=%3CCAA4J92ukFQdtb-fSgt3xq%3D8d%3D-3HGn4R1DrViZmxaOgdBR11Hw%40mail.gmail.com%3E> *Mon Sep 9 06:35:43 PDT 2024* - Previous message (by thread): [ebfnb] Fwd: Homeless Anthology <https://omnicommons.org/lists/private/ebfnb/2024-September/007857.html> - Next message (by thread): [ebfnb] Sierk update <https://omnicommons.org/lists/private/ebfnb/2024-September/007861.html> - *Messages sorted by:* [ date ] <https://omnicommons.org/lists/private/ebfnb/2024-September/date.html#7858> [ thread ] <https://omnicommons.org/lists/private/ebfnb/2024-September/thread.html#7858> [ subject ] <https://omnicommons.org/lists/private/ebfnb/2024-September/subject.html#7858> [ author ] <https://omnicommons.org/lists/private/ebfnb/2024-September/author.html#7858> ------------------------------ Hi all, *I have concerns on Sierk volunteering within EBFNB.* *I think the concerns are serious enough that Sierk no longer be part of East Bay Food Not Bombs and Omni for the time being.* *EB PREC / CALLI will have issues with Sierk inhabiting the building.* *The lax atmosphere at Omni enables individuals taking advantage...* *...Sierk's disregard and disrespect of the communal spaces around Omni is an ongoing problem for years. We have been following up and the results were more negative and dishonesty from him.* *Below are updates and concerns:* - On Tuesday August 20th, the Tuesday and Friday WFM (Bay & Harrison Oakland) pick up crew agreed to stop donations going to Omni's food giveaway on Tuesday / Friday that Sierk coordinated. - On Thursday September 5th, I have asked Sierk to stop handling EBFNB donations and he agreed. - I'm also asking Sierk to stop welcoming people who are not a part of Omni to go in our fridge downstairs and help themselves on their own. I found out on Friday (Sept. 6) after two people were seen doing that and they told me Sierk gave them permission. There was no communication from Sierk to any EBFNB volunteers or Omni members. (My leniency reached its limit from this) *The concerns are:* *- Food handling from Sierk are unkempt, unsanitary, unhygienic body and foul body odor.* *- Sierk never proposed the food giveaway event (on Tues / Fri) to neither Omni or EBFNB for a discussion and approval.* *Despite several request and suggestions to do so.* *- Non communicative and irresponsible and disrespectful with food donations and usage of EBFNB spaces and in other areas at Omni.* *Recently there were hundreds of pounds of food (grains stored in the kitchen) that had to be discarded that he accepted and not taking responsibility for it. Leaving it out that attracted rats, and volunteers to deal with.* *Smelly soiled clothing of his were found in the corners of the kitchen.* *This was addressed to him and he disregarded it.* *- Inappropriate and erratic behaviors towards volunteers.* *Includes talking down to and shouting at people.* *There's a video footage (taken by an Omni member) of Sierk shouting at a new EBFNB volunteer. She disengaged and walked away.* *His angry behavior is a pattern towards volunteers including myself last Thursday the 29th.* *- M**ade decisions that risks the building and people in it to harm. Includes allowing known problematic persons in (that are not members of any groups at Omni).* *- Disregard multiple requests to not sleep inside Omni, not cleaning up after usage of space.* *Sierk sleeps in Omni sitting up on his desk area and when approached he says he is working (non Omni or collectives related) on his laptop late into the night or all nighters. His leg is swelling up as a suspected result of habitual sleeping while sitting up.* *- Rejected several offers from different people to assist in getting proper medical care. Have been self diagnosing his body as a "medical condition" and using it as a reason for behavior.* *- P**rior violent verbal interactions at volunteers. Was never held accountable or acknowledged wrong doings and tried to justify his actions (and believable to some volunteers...)* *This preventable harm resulted in several upset volunteers that are afraid and hurt to quit EBFNB and not going to Omni specifically to avoid him.* *This is not an exhaustive list and there are proof for all the concerns and claims.* *The concerns has negatively affected collectives and the spaces in the building; Liberated Lens, Sacred Maker Arts Collective, individuals at Omni, and volunteers within EBFNB.* *The organizations, individuals, and volunteers has put in their numerous complaints and it was addressed without a sustained helpful solution, acknowledgement, or accountability from EBFNB.* *I foresee new complaints to us from the new entity that will soon manage / be responsible to the building begining this week.* *On Friday they discovered another person who appears to be sleeping in a part of the building:* *" *He said he was not sleeping there, and would be leaving at 6pm after doing some sewing. I hope my concern is unfounded, but it definitely looked like he might be staying there. When I asked what collective he was a part of he said he was with CC. There were also some cats with him. Since CALLI doesn’t own the property yet I can’t really take any action. I am hopeful he does leave by 6pm today, but wanted to alert you delegates since until Monday or Tuesday you are still responsible for the building. I would appreciate if you could make your best non-violent efforts to ensure that space is vacant by the time CALLI does take ownership and responsibility for the space. *"* The person mentioned above is not Sierk. I'm sharing this to share a sense of how the building will be managed. I have been patiently following up throughout the years and was unsuccessful in my attempts to remedy the situation. There are others that have been trying to help without success. We had a help Sierk committee that was created this mid year that included several of us: Ron, Helen, Joe, Judith and I. I have not shared updates to this email list since a couple of volunteers (Judith, Ron) requested I don't do that or even mention his name. Our attempts to support failed and we need to update / reach out to the larger group. *Sierk - I think not making Omni your home and being open to receiving proper medic care will help you.* *- It would be better if you don't repeat the dishonesty in your response to volunteers so they can better help you.* *- Please remove all your belongings and yourself from the building.* *You are no longer welcome in the space due to the numerous concerns mentioned.* *- Currently there are no mediations nor restorative justice planned (from me anyway) since it may be too late, we didn't prioritize the incidents when it first occurred.* *-If you can, do some reflecting and reach out to whoever you feel comfortable speaking with.* Compassion differs from pity. Pitying Sierk isn't helping him or us in any space, it doesn't address solutions but provides a temporary sense of relief such as bringing him clean clothes and food regularly and not laundry / food service that he can attend to himself (the clothes begins to soiled in corners and food accumulates and spoils in the upstairs fridge). Pity prolongs the problems and makes it difficult for the person to grow out of the accustomed unhealthy lifestyle. All - Please refrain (especially those who do not frequent Omni to have enough understanding) from reacting to my message. We can have conversations and talk about it further for details and context, which I can be open to share more. If a fluid meeting is necessary I can set up a video call where we can all interact in a timely manner and see each other. had a rat issue Thursday morning at coffee & algorithms - please clean out!

by Romy Ilano

Hey folks - the not so fun stuff! Whenever you have a creative space like SudoRoom, there are risks. However without the risks, you cannot have the rewards, and we certainly have something different from more corporately run creative spaces. I ran into a problem with two rats Thursday morning - I am against banning or killing rats, but they do their best to cause mischief, distract, and hijack a lot of good things from happening! I think the problem was in ignoring the issue (my fault) and also not being more disciplined. So I made sure to take out the trash. Someone had left some rotting fruit out the past few days, and had avoided the problem - I was one of those people! There has been rotting fruit on the SudoRoom table. Usually this isn't a problem during tuesday or Monday when there is a large group of cool people together in one place, but when a few cool people go to the space alone outside of those days - you're bound to run into rats! I realize I was part of the problem and cleaned house, and the rotting fruit is now in the trash. Anyway on a brighter note: here are some notes from the last few sessions of cofee and whiteboarding - it was really great divorcing algorithms from soulless and ineffective youtube videos to become something delightfcul! https://sudoroom.org/coffee-and-algorithms-bringing-the-soul-back/ rats are people too, and I don't want to kill them, but the unneecesary drama they bring can be probably quarantined. we are thinking of creating separate rat cages to sandbox these creatures to make the space safer for godo things... who knows? we'll figure it out! ============================= Romy Ilano romy(a)snowyla.com

SudoRoom folks traveling to other hackerspaces - Carl in NYC

by Romy Ilano

I wrestled these photos (just kidding) and am trying to get more interesting details from Carl - but does anyone have any photos of visiting other hackerspaces as a delegate of sudoroom? https://sudoroom.org/sudoroom-visit-nyc-resistor/ These are so cute! Carl, tell us more! These are nice to share on the blog. ============================= Romy Ilano romy(a)snowyla.com

Thursday morning there were rats - (a necessary risk) - but folks, please clean out any food!

by Romy Mimi Ilano

Hey folks, Thursday morning my coffee & algorithms session with other people were disrupted by two rats. I accept the rats as an acceptable risk, because it's great to share creativity and food. However. I figured out what was up and instead of getting embroiled in more rat drama I quickly disentangled myself and quarantined the session. It was important for me to take some rotting fruit out and toss it out, and not entertain any of the rat nonsense. In the future we might be able to sequester the rats in their own space, and then folks who want to create can go in separate areas. Rats have feelings too! I've had a lot of fun at hackerspaces over the year, but ignoring the problem isn't the solution, and we are always going to have to accept the reality of rats if we want to have community. https://sudoroom.org/coffee-and-algorithms-bringing-the-soul-back/ keep on learning folks! *Romy Mimi Ilano* *romy.ilano(a)gmail.com <romy.ilano(a)gmail.com>*
