Dear Sudoroom, it's 10:40pm on a Friday.
Most of you are partying your ass off, and I love you for it.
Is anybody in possession of most of their brain? I have a little thing, and
I need a little feedback.
Got 15 minutes? I would so love to hear from you. Please reply if you are
not at the club.

Just passing this on, some people might be interested:
Starting April 5, Ace Monster Toys Hackerspace in Oakland is pleased to
host a month of design courses and workshops with Régis Lemberthe of
A&Ré Design.
Originally trained as an industrial designer, Régis graduated with his
Master's Degree in Humanitarian Design And Sustainable Living before
moving to Berlin and getting involved in the local maker community. He
now presents several different workshops there, in parallel with his
activities as part of A&Ré Design Studio.
From his description of the Design Tour (http://2014.design-tour.org):
"One of the most appropriate and exciting answers to mass production and
consumption, the maker movement has in the last years gained
considerable recognition. Fab labs and hacker spaces are being created
in every major city, offering those familiar with low-scale productions
techniques access to adequate machinery, as well as training for
everyone else. Skill sharing in fab labs is based on the know-how and
experience of artists, designers, makers, programmers and hackers
committed to making production accessible to all. Yet, while some
techniques are widely spread, others sadly remain more confidential.
After a few years spent facilitating events at Betahaus Berlin, French
designer Régis Lemberthe goes on tour - a series of craft workshops and
social+collaborative design courses hosted in maker spaces of various
different cities - lasting for a month, wherever interest and facilities
are. It has started in 2013 in Betahaus Berlin and will continue in
early 2014 in the US, Canada and London before proceeding towards
south-east Asia. "

Hi Labitators!
We're starting a coalition for an international coalition of
free/libre community and mesh networks. One of the first goals is to
define a license for free networks similar to a free software license,
so that all of the current free networks can connect to each other.
We're trying to get funding from the Night Foundation and your tweets,
facebook likes, etc. will help a lot! Here's the main link with more
info:
https://www.newschallenge.org/challenge/2014/submissions/toward-a-network-c…
Also, thanks to everyone from Labitat who helped fund our local
Oakland mesh project! Here's a small status update:
We've developed a new OpenWRT compatible firmware based on German and
Slovenian projects + our own code. We are currently testing ~25 nodes
deployed around the bay area to find and eliminate the worst bugs
before a wider release of ~100 nodes. We've been developing an
automated mesh node deployment system that allows us to take supported
routers out of the box and flash and configure them for use in our
network with minimal human intervention. It is almost complete, and it
uses the sticker printer program developed by Asbjorn from Labitat to
automatically print a sticker with your basic info (e.g. your default
password) that we stick on the the routers before shipping to new node
operators.
One of the awesome things about our firmware is that it allows you to
choose how much of your own internet connection you want to share with
the mesh, and all mesh traffic is routed through a VPN owned by the
local mesh organization which handles all abuse complaints or legal
inquiries. This functionality makes the mesh nodes immediately useful,
even before we reach a node density where new nodes are likely to be
within reach of existing nodes. This concept was first implemented by
wlan slovenja so all credit to them!
Our local non-profit mesh organization is called sudo mesh (
https://sudomesh.org ) and the network is called People's Open Network
( https://peoplesopen.net ). sudo mesh is providing a firmware and
support for getting on peoplesopen.net and will start selling
pre-flashed routers for peoplesopen.net later this year. sudo mesh is
focused on Oakland. We are making sudo mesh an easily forkable
organization, with all material (legal documents, code, marketing
material, documentation) available under open licenses, and we are
encouraging others to create groups like sudo mesh that support
peoplesopen.net in other geographic areas.
If someone wants to start a mesh organization in e.g. Copenhagen, as a
fork of sudo mesh, then reach out to info(a)sudomesh.org and we will do
our best to facilitate!

Sorry for late notice, but my morning's cleared up and I can commit to
being at the bookfair! I'm going to be at Sudoroom around 8am to pack
up the printer and needed accessories and shoot for loading everything
into my car by 8:45. It would be nice to have help during loading and
unloading. I can pick people up in my car before or after this. I
can't stay until the end though - ideally I'd like to pack up the
printer mid-afternoon and then bring it to the Omni and set it up for
that event, but we'll see how easy it is to transport out during peak
hours.
Lemme know if you'd like to help!
Can someone clarify our current status?
I am interested in applying for a grant however these are the requirements
"I certify that the organization for which I am submitting this application
is eligible to apply for the Challenge. This means my organization is a
registered and recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a registered office in
the Bay Area. If you are a fiscal sponsor submitting an application for a
sponsored group, the sponsored group must also be located in the Bay Area. "
So do we qualify? Are we a 501(c)(3)
Thanks!

Hey sudoers!
A coalition of free/libre community-owned networks around the world
has submitted an application for a Knight News Challenge grant aimed
at strengthening the Internet for free expression and innovation.
https://www.newschallenge.org/challenge/2014/submissions/toward-a-network-c…
Please check it out, give us feedback in the form of Comments, and
some "Applause" if you dig the idea!
The goal of funding is trifold:
* To support the development of the Network Commons License[1] and an
organization to uphold it,
* To support an international Free Networks summit to gather together
representatives of free networks[2] in one place to share ideas and
resources toward creating the aforementioned organization,
* To support the creation of educational materials, workshops, and
guides for the construction and maintenance of free networks.
[1] There is currently an effort underway to develop a Network Commons
License - similar to a Creative Commons License - to enable legal
support for free networks. Two weeks ago, a group of folks
representing Sudo Mesh, wlan-slovenija, LA Meshnet, Kansas City
Freedom Network and Austin Freenet converged in Austin for the Free
Network Foundation's winter summit. It was an awesome, intensive
couple of days with remote participation from several other groups.
You can read notes from the summit here:
https://commons.thefnf.org/index.php/2014WinterSummitMondayNotes
* Draft of the Free Network Definition:
https://commons.thefnf.org/index.php/Free_network_definition
* Draft of the Network Commons License:
https://commons.thefnf.org/index.php/Network_Commons_License
[2] The following groups helped draft the Knight News Challenge
proposal, and we intend to reach out to many more in the coming weeks:
* Sudo Mesh, launching the People's Open Network in Oakland, CA
* Kansas City Freedom Network, in close alliance with the Free Network
Foundation in Kansas City, MO.
* wlan-slovenija across Slovenia and connecting Austria and Croatia!
* Altermundi in Argentina
* Guifi.net in Catalonia
* Freifunk in Germany
* Ninux in Italy
* MedellinLibre in Medellin, Columbia
* Village Telco in South Africa
* Fédération FDN in France
Many thanks for reading - please share with any relevant individuals
and mailing lists you can think of!
Cheers,
Jenny

Hi everyone,
Oakland Wiki <http://oaklandwiki.org> has partnered with Oakland Public
Library <http://oaklandlibrary.org/> to host a series of edit parties at
different branches of the library this spring!
See the event dates and locations at
http://oaklandwiki.org/Oakland_Wiki_Events
There's also a rad flyer that the wonderful librarians have made with all
the necessary info attached here.
FINALLY, if you're in Oakland tomorrow for first friday, drop by Sudo
Room<http://sudoroom.org>where we'll be Drawing
Oakland <http://oaklandwiki.org/Draw_Oakland>. We'll have art supplies and
will be drawing whatever we want about Oakland - its neighborhoods, people,
etc. We'll be scanning our drawings and uploading them to the wiki to
illustrate entries. If you want to draw a logo or illustration of your
neighborhood or a favorite park or taco truck, this is your chance :)
Best,
Marina

Wasn't there a group meeting at Sudo yesterday to organize against
this? How did that go?
