I was at the event where I also got to checkout the newly formed hakerspace in Hayward.
It's a nice space with a main room and several smaller rooms The rooftop is also
accessible with 2.4kw of solar cells installed. I suggested the rooftop can be used for
mesh radio router deployment and Sudo Air program.
Thanks to generous patrons, Straycap owns the space in Hayward and does not have to pay
rent. However the folks running the space has lamented the lack of technology related
activities, with the space mostly being used as a community center for stuffs like salsa
dance lessons. He calls Hayward as a "STEM People Desert" with Straycap being a
hackerspace minus the hackers. I brought up the idea to move SudoRoom into Straycap which
will both solve our money problem and their people problem.

Hi Sudoers:
StrayCap Multispace (>
https://www.straycap.org/> ) in Hayward is gathering
up expired school system Chromebooks to convert to Linux; they’ve got hundreds on
hand at the moment. (See >
https://bit.ly/cbsave> for background.)
We’re going to join forces with local Linux enthusiasts tomorrow (Saturday May 9)
noon-3pm for a combo Open House / ExChromebook Installfest; we’ll work together to
convert and reconfigure Chromebooks into “ExChromebooks” while asking: how can we
best re-purpose these in our communities to improve digital literacy, digital
sovereignty, digital inclusion, digital equity?
You’re welcome to take some ExChromebooks home to experiment with or to give to
anyone else you know who could use one. (Fill out this Google Form: >
https://forms.gle/zMJjTxmQPj8ZvaJ39> ) You’re also most welcome to bring your
repair projects to work on and get help with. Please RSVP at >
http://bit.ly/inpersoncoachsignup> so we can get a head count (select
"2026-05-09 USA-CA-Hawyard ExChromebook Installfest at StrayCap Noon" from
the pulldown menu.)
Feel free to bring your repair-inclined or tech-inclined friends, or tell them
about it, especially if they live in or around Hayward; StrayCap's a half a block
from the Hayward Main Library (and a seven minute walk from Hayward BART.)
Hope to see you there, -Peter
