hi all,
we just spoke with david from the public school and he has confirmed that
the keypad codes that we gave to public school folks were not working this
evening. would anyone be able to check out the keypad, confirm whether it's
working, and possibly fix it? :)

david and folks from the hair salon have both asked me in the last couple
days when the keypad might be back up.
unfortunately, i don't know how to fix it myself. is there anything that i
can do to help move forward with resolving the problem with the keypad?

I looked at it for a couple of hours yesterday. It seems like sometimes
when a key combination is entered, it causes the raspi to crash.
Strange behavior.
I also changed the init.d script, since it wasn't shutting down properly
and when 'start' was called it wasn't daemonizing.

order to have either their own buzzer or consistent keypad access and what
the ETA might be on a fix to the keypad. i'm afraid i don't know what to

Here's a suggestion: I think the root of a lot of these problems is the
Rasberry pi. I propose we off load the keypad functionality to another
computer that calls the pi via HTTP to open the door.
Also please keep in mind that the keypad is an ongoing project. It's in
alpha/prototype stage right now. It is not a well tested production device
and should not be treated like one. We have multiple ways to get in to that
door (5, last time I counted) so lets make sure that people who need to get
in are aware of at least one backup. Also if we want something reliable
then we should really look in to purchasing a system that is already in
production.

thanks andrew! i really appreciate your second point about the project not
being ready and us having many options for people to get in. do the hair
kandi people have other ways of getting in? i think they're in a difficult
spot because george doesn't want them to keep the door open but now it
seems like they might not have another way to let their clients in (maybe
they do?). if we can help them come up with a way to let their clients in
(keypad, buzzer, whatever), i think that will go a long way.

point about the project
not being ready and us having many options for people to get in. do the
hair kandi people have other ways of getting in? i think they're in a
difficult spot because george doesn't want them to keep the door open but
now it seems like they might not have another way to let their clients in
(maybe they do?). if we can help them come up with a way to let their
clients in (keypad, buzzer, whatever), i think that will go a long way.

Well, if he didn't demand that we fix it, he demanded that we lock the door
at all times, which requires us keeping that thing working or having some
other support system. The fact that he did what he did yesterday, is even
more deplorable, because we are not equipped to support the door at all
times.
Basically, I 100% agree that George needs to take care of that, and that
we should tell hair kandi the same story. I wouldn't mind talking to them,
but this week is probably the worst time, because I have a lot of work due
and I leave for vacation on thursday.

Another one of the problems is that on Saturday there was a camera
installed, connected to the RasPi, which brings it up to three things
connected to one RasPi - the keypad, the camera, and the RFID reader.
Our RasPi model has only 2 USB ports, so - we need either a USB Hub
(which may or may not work) or another RasPi right at the door (which
would necessitate an additional network hub), which adds the amount of
stealable equipment at the point of entry.
We may want to put a locked box to protect that equipment instead of the
cardboard box we have currently. Even if it's a really simple locked
box, it still looks less stealable than all the equipment in a cardboard
box like we currently have.

Keep in mind that there is an Ethernet cable running from sudoroom to the
door. So door functions do not have to actually be near the door and don't

This whole project is pretty dang awesome.
I wish I'd helped out more with it. It's one of those cases where people
actually did stuff to solve a problem. Talking is cool, I love that and I
encourage that, but when people complain then do something, that's so rare
and nice.

My suggestion goes like this...
INTERNET --> SudoRoom Intranet --> RasPi ---> Door [the ONLY thing the
RasPi does is open the door via an http call to an API]
USB -> Door Function Computer/Computers (RFID, BUZZER, KEYPAD) --> SudoRoom
-> RasPi (Via HTTP) -> Door
So all the RasPi does is open the door. All other functions can be off
loaded to other computers RasPi's or not, they just need to have usb ports
and be connected to a hub that gets them on the SudoRoom Intranet. Then all
they have to do is hit the opendoor API on the DoorPi.
Make sense?

If we are to have a camera monitoring the street as we discussed at the
last meeting, it seems to me sensible that it's connected to _a_ RasPi
at the entry door. It doesn't have to be the same RasPi, but at least
it should be in the same location. This is because we don't have any
other way to view the street from inside the space, since neither
Sudoroom proper nor "RootRoom" or the shared space, are facing that side
of the building.
I mentioned at the meeting this software: http://www.zoneminder.com/
which is available in the raspbian repos, and we can monitor the street
using this. We should come up with a policy (e.g. we only retain videos
for X # of days and don't upload it to the internet) and configure
zoneminder appropriately.
