I was randomly in sudo room today when I noticed smoke rising from the main
tables.
This was caused by one of those adjustable magnifying glass lamps which was
focusing the sun from the overhead windows onto some plastic bags.
Given that the overhead windows are not going away I think we should ban
these types of lamps from sudo room.
I have given the evil lamp away to a good home where hopefully it can be
rehabilitated of its pyromaniac ways.

Indeed, fire is bad. The Omni building does not have a fire sprinkler
system and the insurance company has notified Omni that they will not renew
the insurance policy
unless a fire sprinkler system has been installed. Without insurance,
refinance is highly unlikely, ultimately resulting in foreclosure of the
Omni.
Fortunately it is possible to install a fire suppression system that is
vastly less costly compared to other alternatives:
NFPA 13D-approved for *use in* multipurpose and standalone *fire sprinkler*
systems, *PEX* has been shown to be an effective
alternative to CPVC and
copper pipe due to its easy installation and durability. ... *PEX* won't
pit, scale or corrode like copper piping systems *can* in harsh water
conditions

Just wanted to reassure people that this is incorrect - just verified that
with the Omni delegates meeting this evening. Yes, the insurance company
sent an inspector out a couple months ago, but as far as we know, we passed
that inspection to their satisfaction, and our insurance will be renewed.
That being said - sure, we'd love a sprinkler system at the Omni. But by
code it cannot be tied into the regular water lines, and just the cost of
getting a second tap into the water mains is currently prohibitively
expensive, regardless of what material the actual sprinkler tubing would be
made of.
If you know anybody who might be willing to make a significant donation to
get sprinklers installed at the Omni, please do let us know. Don't remember
the last estimate, but I believe it was well above $100K...
