If they are laptops then we can triage them and redistribute, as part of the
Laptops For All project. But if they're desktops, we can't physically deal
with them and there won't be any demand for them in our audience.
Speaking of which...the Laptops For All project needs volunteers! Who wants
to organize an event where we go through the enormous stacks of laptop
donations and sort the good from the bad?

fwiw, some context and background:
- we initiated Laptops For All as a fiscally sponsored project under Sudo
Mesh about 5 years ago after receiving a donation of > 100 nice laptops
from Credit Karma: https://laptopsforall.org
- in recent year or two, sudo room received many chromebooks and have also
been fixing and distro'ing laptops - I'm not so familiar with how this work
has gone, so would love a summary
- sudo mesh has approximately $500 remaining in a designated fundraising
account, which we've previously spent on things such as RAM upgrades, SSDs,
and bits
happy to continue the convo - beyond repairs we should explore best ways to
distro repaired laptops. in the past this was largely done through existing
omni channels targeting the unhoused, civil rights activists (especially
those working with media), and local youth

in the laptops, from the top of my head I can think of:
Dev Mission - Coding bootcamp for youth in Mission district, SF
Techtonica - Coding bootcamp for women/nb only
Hack the hood - Mentorship for Oakland youth that wants to get into STEM
Let me know if we wanna go this route, I may have contacts from these orgs.

those sound like awesome destinations for the laptops!
but we would wait and see how many we can fix and what levels of performance
they can do.
the computers we have are almost all old enough that many organizations would
turn them down, so we should ask what their situation is.

I have some experience installing Linux Mint on 2012, and 2015 MacBooks.
Whoever going to work on them, if first time… you may want to consider:
1. Replace their old drive if is not an SSD, and max the RAM (8GB, 16GB
depending on model).
2. Plug it to an Ethernet cable to make sure the WiFi Drivers can be
installed, because not of these models WiFi drive comes in the Linux Mint
installer.
3. Attach USB with Linux Mint installer.
4. Plug power cable and Turn it on.
5. Press and hold down the Options key.
6. Choose USB (usually orange icon).
7. Let it boot from USB, it will bring you to the Desktop.
8. At the Desktop double click (or right click and choose open) the Install
icon.
9. Follow steps.
10. Once Linux Mint has been installed and machine had rebooted and BEFORE
anything else, check and install the WiFi driver (if not installed during
the OS installation process. Here is how:
10.1 Click on the Start button, then click on Administration, after that on
Driver Manager.
10.2 After the driver (usually it is the WiFi driver) gets installed reboot
the laptop.
11. Once the laptop is back the WiFi should be available to use.
12. Now go ahead and proceed applying the regular Software updates (GUI or
Terminal, your choice).
I suggest Linux Mint because it’s GUI is easy to navigate, and that
encourage new Linux learners.

Anyway, if the laptops still with the original disks (5200RPM), I recommend
to replace them first.

I have some experience installing Linux Mint on
2012, and 2015 MacBooks.
Whoever going to work on them, if first time… you may want to consider:
1. Replace their old drive if is not an SSD, and max the RAM (8GB, 16GB
depending on model).
2. Plug it to an Ethernet cable to make sure the WiFi Drivers can be
installed, because not of these models WiFi drive comes in the Linux Mint
installer.
3. Attach USB with Linux Mint installer.
4. Plug power cable and Turn it on.
5. Press and hold down the Options key.
6. Choose USB (usually orange icon).
7. Let it boot from USB, it will bring you to the Desktop.
8. At the Desktop double click (or right click and choose open) the
Install
icon.
9. Follow steps.
10. Once Linux Mint has been installed and machine had rebooted and
BEFORE
anything else, check and install the WiFi driver
(if not installed during
the OS installation process. Here is how:
10.1 Click on the Start button, then click on Administration, after that
on
Driver Manager.
10.2 After the driver (usually it is the WiFi driver) gets installed
reboot
the laptop.
11. Once the laptop is back the WiFi should be available to use.
12. Now go ahead and proceed applying the regular Software updates (GUI
or
Terminal, your choice).
I suggest Linux Mint because it’s GUI is easy to navigate, and that
encourage new Linux learners.
