I agree that there is some dissonance in bringing people in for the purpose of leaving
together for sure. Whatever the amount of investment capital or revenues these groups
have, they will have to make rent or mortgage payments every month in the new space
whether or not they rent for an extra few months in the humble 2141 beginning. I think if
a few groups can be put in together in a 3rd room at 2141 to at least begin the process of
working together and making shared commitments, it would be rent money well spent. It
reduces the perception of risk on part of the other orgs, and reduces the actual risk
sudo/BAPS would face by signing up with groups that may change their minds when it's
time to commit to a lease or even worse, withdraw from the project after the lease is
signed. +1 on not waiting to start! Also, does someone have a link to previous omni
meetings? Trying to get caught up on the discussion.
Cheers,
Hol

I think Matt's proposal has legs - for sure, it would be great to try to get a
critical mass of collectives together regardless of the Omni or where we end up
collectively moving.
On the negative side there is mostly only the
potentially dissonant messaging of BAPS & Sudo trying to get out of 2141 because of
all the reasons we already know, while at the same time trying to get new folks into 2141.
Also the reality that paying rent at 2141 for new groups will invariably cut down on their
potential initial investment capital going into another, new space. But, if the lease is
month-to-month, and there are currently space-less groups willing to put down in there,
heck why not? I don't think new groups will get too excited about an office off the
main room per se as a space to work in, but the benefits being proximal to BAPS and Sudo,
and actually having a space for those who are currently nomadic, and most importantly not
waiting to start actually forming the collective of collectives now, to the extent that we
can, definitely makes sense to me.

Hey all,
I have a proposal I'd like some feedback on and to discuss at the next meeting at the
public school this Thursday (7pm right?)
Proposal:
Out of the attendees of these meetings
(including folks on the list below), to find some number of interested collectives,
individuals, organizations, small businesses, etc to rent the $900-$950 / mo. office
adjacent to the Bay Area Public School (BAPS), sharing the common space with BAPS and the
Sudo Room at 2141 Broadway in Oakland. For instance, at ~18 equal parties, this room can
be rented for $50 / mo. I am personally interested in coordinating several folks to use
part of the space as "sudo coworking" with a few small desks for individual
work. The intention of this rental is multiple-fold:
* To no longer delay in solidifying collaboration
between various groups--i.e. for other folks to join BAPS and the Sudo Room by sharing
space now.* To commit to investing (minimally) financially in a venture that requires
communication, collaboration, and sharing.
* To engage in a learning experience about our ability to co-operate and grow.* To provide
an opportunity to groups that currently do not have a space to galvanize their community.*
To be able to fruitfully engage in a comparison between various group rental options
including The Omni, 8th and Alice, and even 2141 Broadway.
