New subject: [omni-discuss] [CCL] Don't leave valuables in your car!
I've actually had two pleasant interactions with the cops recently. I get the idea
that they only make things worse, but I don't think that's the majority of cases.
If people don't feel like they can park around the omni then it's less available
to people in our community who live further afield. I'm not opposed to asking the
police to patrol our street a little more often, but if that's unacceptable to our
some of our members I'd like to hear some alternative solutions.

I think it's a terrible idea to ask cops to patrol our streets more often.
There is no immediate solution to preventing theft other than removing
valuables from cars.
The long term solution is to strengthen and continue our work in the
community. Theft isn't a symptom of malicious intent, but social
disadvantage. If we'd like to address this more intentionally as a
community, we could start by reading a book like Michelle Alexander's "The
New Jim Crow" and discussing why the policing industry doesn't strengthen
communities, but weakens them.

Asking cops to patrol more won't do anything - they probably won't even do
it, and even if they did it wouldn't make a bit of difference. People
will just take your things when the cops aren't looking. Which is pretty
much always, no matter how often they drive by.
I drive to Omni all the time and have never had my car broken into. I also
never leave anything of value in sight.

Jacob, respectfully, you (and I) are white. I don't want to start a heated
discussion of race politics, but it's critically important to recognize the
context of your interactions with police. I feel like the last year has
done a superb job demonstrating nationally why the police are polarizing
and systematically biased. While no one wants to have their car broken
into, inviting extra police into the neighborhood is bound to have an
effect on the very diverse community at large, an effect that I'm sure many
would find alienating.
Take a look at the Omni's wiki <https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Welcome>, and
in particular the "What core values do groups share?" section. To me,
values like "Standing in solidarity with all oppressed people" and
"Striving for social, economic & environmental justice", shout NO POLICE.
As for solutions, I think this thread's title says it all: Don't leave
valuable things in your car, especially not visibly. Thieves are a pain in
the ass, but they're not fools and will probably not risk breaking into
your car if there is no obvious boon.
Or you can always BART and/or bike :)
