Lockers are acquired! There are 5 units with 2 lockers each. Each of
these 10 lockers has a small square shelf and a tall L-shaped shelf.
It turns out these don't need built-in locks, they just have loops to
put a padlock through. So folks should probably acquire their own
padlocks.
How much should we charge for them? I was thinking we could charge a
flat rate per locker, and we can share them for discount rates. Who'd
like to share with me? :)
The ad asked for $50 but the guy dropped it to 40 when he learned what
they are for. Instead of reimbursing me, I'll just let it go towards
my locker tab.
Although membership is of course sliding scale, we should make it
clear that locker dues aren't meant to be a substitute for member dues
or a new form of special membership. It's just another fundraiser.
So everybody pay up, help us cut down on clutter, and enjoy your new lockers!

$10 or $15 a month? It seems like we'll have to make room somehow, which I think can
be accomplished through a combination of rearranging/organizing our stockpiles, and trying
to convince people who want to store their own projects at sudo room to do it in a locker.
I don't think it would be converting communal space into personal space as much as it
would be acknowledging that communal space is getting clogged up (increasingly - it's
getting hard to move around in there) with projects that are only being maintained by one
or two people or not at all.
Also, I would like to bring back up the notion of opening up projects and
advertising/communicating the work that needs to be done, like for example if 3 different
projects need a similar power supply, we could agree on the specs and open that part of
the project to be done separately. I know when I talk about "projects" I focus
on hardware projects, but that's just because they take up the most physical space. I
keep meaning to come up with a format for sharing subsystem info and inviting people with
relevant skills to participate in its development but so far it's all been talk on my

i think your point is extremely important. we have an extreme clutter
problem! partially due to our poor documentation, it's unclear when
something is an in-progress project or "hackable stuff that might have a
purpose for someone sometime in the future theoretically maybe." i have a
feeling that most of the stuff in sudo is in the latter category in which
case i'm not sure what to do...

Good points all :-) Since we have lockers now, does this mean we'll be
doing away with the stack of crates?
Anyone have a preferred timeframe for an organizing day? What if I put
something on the calendar for the Sunday after this one (July 21] and we
ramp up to it? Ramping up would entail such activities as: transporting the
shelves Patrick said he would donate, going through the library [do we
really want to keep the manual on Java 6, for instance?], and tagging
things on the shelves ['working' or 'broken' or 'ewaste', ideally
a bit
more specific].
Thinking this could also be a Mycelia <http://www.mycelia.cc/> bootstrap
day - so we would be making labels for stuff we want to keep around and
start documenting finished and in-progress projects. Making QR code labels
will prompt folks to document things on the wiki, and documenting projects
will prompt me to start working on the project-end of Mycelia...

from what i've seen of the mycelia documentation, it seems like just the type of tool
i've been grasping for. will help however i can with the coding / db schema
development.
i think the cubbies are good where they are now for the time being but there doesn't
seem to be much turnover of the contents, my perpetually disassembled dehumidifier being
one of the culprits. Do we need to bring in more shelving or should we assemble and
install the shelving we have?
one of the big things that i love being there but we're not really using is the CNC
router. this thing is so useful but it just doesn't get used! electricjack (who is
lending it to the space) came and did a run through for me and matt - matt documented it
on the wiki, but we just don't have the critical mass of people with the institutional
knowledge to keep it busy. If we chipped in for a laser, it could be mounted where the
spindle is for CNC laser cutting. there are going to be alot of cases where we have so
much cool stuff that we have to make tough decisions based on what it actually being
used.
I also noticed a literal shit ton of unused vertical space in the server/beer/mushroom
closet, and as far as I know the space above the sudo radio pod is mostly empty. people
who work on sudo sys - would it be helpful if we build some rackmount shelving to hold
that up off the ground? it can be done cheaply with 2X4s.
should we try to pull some stuff that looks like it won't be used at all, like broken
monitors and generally broken or awkward items, take some pictures of the assembled
pending deletions, and send them out to the list to give people a chance to veto removal
of specific items? I'd like to see us processing more of this stuff. I've been
scouring for plumbing, valves, actuators, etc to use in *slightly* more useful
configurations. maybe we can shepherd some items to more specific interest groups.
there's a tradeoff between retaining a multidisciplinary complement of tools, and
having so much equipment that the space is not usable for big projects anymore, especially
if there is more than 1 group there.
also, i will get the mini ecosystem / fly breeding operation out of the sink area this
weekend! if anybody wants some water hyacinth for a water garden, feel free to grab one
of the smaller ones, just leave the 2 big ones since those are my plant mommies. morten
and i were talking about doing an elevated spiral hydroponics garden around the perimeter
of the skylight, but that's a ways off unless someone has a bunch of 3-6"
diameter PVC handy.
