The flier above (pdf) are guidelines for tomorrow night's First Friday Event
in lieu of expected potential violence from the group listed in the web site
above. Apparently at sites (unknown to me) this black bloc group has been
advocating that people come out en mass and cause trouble after First Friday
is over. We are asking that groups meeting in the building disburse by
11pm and that all doors, esp. doors to Broadway, 22nd Street and the Alley
behind out of 2135, as well as the gate into the front entrance of 2135, be
securely locked by this time. George will be there at that time to convince
all to leave the building and he will secure it.
Groups or individuals not adhering to this warning and coming back to the
building after that time may find themselves responsible not only for
damages to their persons but damage done to the building or others.
This is a serious issue; even the Security Ambassadors are being asked to go
home by midnight for their own personal safety, and there is no expectation
that the police will have enough personnel on the streets should this get
out of hand.
Many of you were not there a few years ago during the (Oscar Grant)
riots....it was not pretty, and there WAS damage to our property. Trouble
is NOT expected early in the evening. Enjoy yourselves, but try to monitor
alcohol consumption (your own and those around you) for the safety of all
tomorrow evening...and get home early....and SAFELY!

so many things to say about this. but I really don't want this to turn into
a black-bloc flame war. But, let me just say if this sounds strangely like
a fear tactic and until reading this you never thought to feel
personally threatened by the mythical black-bloc group.. there's a reason,
cause it's mostly BS. The Oscar Grant riot was a bunch of people without
mask looting stuff... this hasn't happened once during the occupy movement.
I just hope this doesn't scare anyone away from being downtown after the
9pm shut down. We don't have a curfew!

for transparency so y'all are aware of the temperature of our landlords.
That said, please do remember to close doors behind you when entering and
exiting the building, *always and especially* if you go out the front
(Broadway-side) door or down the stairs to the side door (the door to the
stairs). Otherwise alarms go off and George calls and yells at me/sudoers :)

I stayed away from certain protests because it was known that Black Bloc
(who are not black and are not from around the block) would be stirring
up shit.
Their tactic boils down to: infiltrate someone else's protest, then
provoke the cops into over-reacting and hurting innocent protesters, and
then try to use the police over-reaction as an excuse to stir up The
Revolution. I call that "revolution over _someone else's_ dead body,"
and yeah it's basically cowardly.
I guarantee, with 100% certainty, that there is at least one deliberate
infiltrator/provocateur in Black Bloc, whose real goal is to destroy the
effectiveness of various movements & protests in the Bay Area. The rest
of 'em, who do it for the jollies, are basically provocateur scabs,
working for free and thereby undercutting the wages that might otherwise
be paid to professional provocateurs.

The flier above (pdf) are guidelines for tomorrow
night's First Friday Event
in lieu of expected potential violence from the
group listed in the web site
above. Apparently at sites (unknown to me) this
black bloc group has been
advocating that people come out en mass and cause
trouble after First Friday
is over. We are asking that groups meeting in
the building disburse by
11pm and that all doors, esp. doors to Broadway,
22nd Street and the Alley
behind out of 2135, as well as the gate into the
front entrance of 2135, be
securely locked by this time. George will be
there at that time to convince
all to leave the building and he will secure it.
Groups or individuals not adhering to this warning
and coming back to the
building after that time may find themselves
responsible not only for
damages to their persons but damage done to the
building or others.
This is a serious issue; even the Security
Ambassadors are being asked to go
home by midnight for their own personal safety,
and there is no expectation
that the police will have enough personnel on the
streets should this get
out of hand.
Many of you were not there a few years ago during
the (Oscar Grant)
riots....it was not pretty, and there WAS damage
to our property. Trouble
is NOT expected early in the evening. Enjoy
yourselves, but try to monitor

While i appreciate that your view is a popular one. Its also wrong on many
levels.
These issues have been hashed out many times before, but in summery: black
bloc is a tactic not a group see the wikipedia article. People who use said
tactic have been in the occupy movement in oakland from the beginning and
have been major organizers.
Police overeaction doesnt take much provoking.
If anyone is hiring for these so called professional black bloc roles hit
me up :-)

like a fear tactic and until reading this you never thought to feel
personally threatened by the mythical black-bloc group.. there's a reason,

dollars in times of tight budgets. $50K is a teaching assistant for a
year, or five families' worth of public assistance.
How'bout Black Bloc come up with their own $50K to piss away? They can
burn it after they burn the flag. That'll show some guts and
conviction, instead of burning other peoples' tax dollars.

Hey, so, flame off for a minute, but, I read Graeber's essay, and it made
sense as a reply to Chris Hedges, and I liked Graeber's debt book and
several of his essays all, but why, here, should I care whether black block
is a group or a tactic? What if it is neither, or other things
alternatively or in addition, or different things in different
circumstances according to different people with different views, which are
more relevant to the question of what is going to go down Friday night and
what if anything to do about it?
What is interesting about it, and what is the significance of what is
planned for Friday night, and what can we all expect, and what are options
with what pros and cons for what we should do Friday night, each and or all?

I stayed away from certain protests because it was known that Black Bloc
(who are
not black and are not from around the block) would be stirring up
shit.
Their tactic boils down to: infiltrate someone
else's protest, then
provoke the cops into over-reacting and hurting innocent
protesters, and
then try to use the police over-reaction as an excuse to stir up The
Revolution. I call that "revolution over _someone else's_ dead body," and
yeah it's basically cowardly.
I guarantee, with 100% certainty, that there is
at least one deliberate
infiltrator/provocateur in Black Bloc, whose real goal is
to destroy the
effectiveness of various movements & protests in the Bay Area. The rest of
'em, who do it for the jollies, are basically provocateur scabs, working
for free and thereby undercutting the wages that might otherwise be paid to
professional provocateurs.

committee. I'm not sure why you'd accuse them of pretending not to exist.
Your use of slogans as a rhetorical device comes across to me as

to have been in a situation where it may have been used. It seems you

I have had the wonderful opportunity to spend time conversing with the
Tactical Action Committee and they'd prefer the money to be spent
keeping schools open, keeping people in their homes, and creating jobs.
That 'latest' PR is also over a year old, and as written, explicitly
marks groups like sudoroom off limits. Howard Jordan wants to have his
cake and eat it too.
This is irrelevant to black bloc tactics, Tactical Action Committee

What is this? The Dark Knight? There are a number of ways to protest.
One of the ways they chose to do so was meeting every week and marching
through neighborhoods. They might not have been reaching you or your
target audience, but when they'd walk through a neighborhood where the
police ignore gunshots and folks would see 3 dozen cops following 2
dozen civilians, they'd get the message.
Always easier to piss away someone else's money.
Tell your district supervisor or the mayor about that. A handful of
people can't force the city to spend money.
It's not a tactic, it's a tantrum.
Year in, year out? Tantrum implies emotional immaturity and an immediacy
of action and yet the Tactical Action Committee ran these marches over
and over again on a weekly basis. The police were the ones throwing
tantrum and, you know, letting people die.
For someone who remembers the hacker scares around phreaking, it seems
hypocritical for you to add to the FUD on another misunderstood group.
