my wifi connection to Omni Commons wifi keeps going up and down every few
minutes, and it's annoying.
i thought it was just me and my crappy laptop. when it first started
happening, it was right when sudoroom (and the whole omni) got a new router
computer. we kept the old one around because it's still running things, and
it's the computer where people can run whatever projects around sudoroom (like
the Laser Printer access page at http://100.64.64.88 ) without worrying about
messing up the router.
today I forgot my laptop power adaptor so i've been using a random laptop
booted off of a USB stick, and it's doing the exact same thing!
do we have a rogue DHCP server or something? I have heard other people
complain that the same thing is happening to them too.

I thought this had been solved, but apparently not. It’s hard to troubleshoot with just
reports that it doesn’t work. What OS are you running on the system that most recently had
the problem?

I think I fixed this - can you try again?
When we first set up the new router we had the same problem and solved
it with an iptables rule to let DHCP traffic in & out which had been
blocked before. The evidence is really obvious if you type journalctl
on the router - you see a stream of error messages like:
Feb 07 09:50:00 saros dhcpd[976]: send_packet: Operation not permitted
Feb 07 09:50:00 saros dhcpd[976]: dhcp.c:3903: Failed to send 300 byte
long packet over fallback interface.
When writing the rules into a file to make it permanent, I tried to be
too clever and added ' -o !enp3s0' to the rule because I thought, "who
wants to send DHCP to the WAN anyway? What could possibly go wrong!"
Then last week I rebooted the router, the new rules took effect, and
the extra '-o !enp3s0' caused the rule to fail (still not sure why),
thus blocking crucial DHCP traffic again. As soon as I replaced the
rule just now with a simpler one, the error messages stopped.

occurring again today and ramping up in frequency as the day progresses.
Three or four days ago the connection would be lost every five minutes or
so, yesterday I believe it was stable for the whole day for the first time
in months. This morning it was once every hour or two, now it's about two
or three times an hour.

troubleshooting/configuration under the sun at this point. I told some
friends about the internet woes and they seem to think it's the access
points as well.
Also I still can't connect to peoplesopen at all, regardless of where I am
in the building.

Hello Folks,
A quick update.
HP switch x.x.64.212 (2nd Floor), and HP Switch x.x.64.213 (Server area)
had their time wrong, due that they couldn't reach their assigned SNTP
server. I set a new SNTP server (108.61.73.243).
Even though the time got updated without need of rebooting, I did that
anyways, hoping that the WiFi controller and APs get a fresh connection. I
am sorry if some of you went down for a moment.

The problem persists. Three disconnects in the last two hours... It does
seem like it's a whole lot worse with more users: for the last (two?
three?) months that this has been going on, when there's lots of folks here
I lose connection every few minutes while it might only be once or twice an
hour early in the morning or very late at night when the building is nearly
empty and I've even left my machine running overnight on multiple occasions
since this started and found it still connected in the morning despite
continuous disconnects throughout the day, so there does seem to be a
relationship between disconnection frequency and the number of people
connected.

What do you mean by "disconnect"? Do you get disassociated from the wifi or
does your DHCP lease expire without a new lease being acquired or is
traffic just not going through for a while?

Just another data point. Using wifi in the basement on the triple core
Debian box I was getting disconnected from the internet every 5-10
minutes, though the network manager claimed I was still connected. I had
to disconnect and reconnect to ping the world. I thought it was just me
and Linux's partial support for proprietary wireless chipsets, and spent
a couple of hours trying various newer kernels, firmware, compiling
drivers, etc., to no avail.
Last night I was on line for 7 hours or so and I don't think I was
disconnected at all, though a large file I was downloading seemed to
drop at one point (Kali Linux 2018.1 iso file, 2.9 GB). So the problem
seems to be mostly resolved for me, thanks Yar and others.

seem like it's a whole lot worse with more users: for the last (two?
three?) months that this has been going on, when there's lots of folks here
I lose connection every few minutes while it might only be once or twice an
hour early in the morning or very late at night when the building is nearly
empty and I've even left my machine running overnight on multiple occasions
since this started and found it still connected in the morning despite
continuous disconnects throughout the day, so there does seem to be a
relationship between disconnection frequency and the number of people
connected.

Hello Folks,
A quick update.
HP switch x.x.64.212 (2nd Floor), and HP Switch x.x.64.213 (Server area)
had their time wrong, due that they couldn't reach their assigned SNTP
server. I set a new SNTP server (108.61.73.243).
Even though the time got updated without need of rebooting, I did that
anyways, hoping that the WiFi controller and APs get a fresh connection. I
am sorry if some of you went down for a moment.

SO FAR...
Looking into the WiFi Controller... these things came up:
a) Found the time zone was set to "Casablanca". -It is possible that I
didn't change it during its initial set up. Now is set to Pacific ST.
b) The SNTP server was pointing to the manufacturer/vendor, so I changed it
to the one that I set on the switches (108.61.73.243). This IP I grabbed it
from my home PON node, I assumed Meshers use it for a good reason. If you
feel that it should be changed it, please let me know.
c) I rebooted the WiFi controller.
d) Yar or whoever is doing the DHCP config/admin, may you please Reserve
this IP 100.64.65.229 (c0:8a:de:1d:59:b6) at the DHCP Server? This IP was
assigned to the Ruckus WiFi Controller, during this reboot.
I have been online (Sudoroom area) for almost two hours and I haven't
experience any WiFi connectivity issues. I asked someone that is here, and
he said that been online for about five hours, and also has not noticed any
issues with the WiFi.
Speed Test show about 60Mbps/13Mbps.

Just another data point. Using wifi in the
basement on the triple core
Debian box I was getting disconnected from the internet every 5-10 minutes,
though the network manager claimed I was still connected. I had to
disconnect and reconnect to ping the world. I thought it was just me and
Linux's partial support for proprietary wireless chipsets, and spent a
couple of hours trying various newer kernels, firmware, compiling drivers,
etc., to no avail.
Last night I was on line for 7 hours or so and I don't think I was
disconnected at all, though a large file I was downloading seemed to drop
at one point (Kali Linux 2018.1 iso file, 2.9 GB). So the problem seems to
be mostly resolved for me, thanks Yar and others.

A quick update.
HP switch x.x.64.212 (2nd Floor), and HP Switch x.x.64.213 (Server
area) had their time wrong, due that they couldn't reach their assigned
SNTP server. I set a new SNTP server (108.61.73.243).
Even though the time got updated without need of rebooting, I did that
anyways, hoping that the WiFi controller and APs get a fresh connection. I
am sorry if some of you went down for a moment.

Looking into the WiFi Controller... these things came up:
a) Found the time zone was set to "Casablanca". -It is possible that I
didn't change it during its initial set up. Now is set to Pacific ST.

experience any WiFi connectivity issues. I asked someone that is here, and
he said that been online for about five hours, and also has not noticed any
issues with the WiFi.
Speed Test show about 60Mbps/13Mbps.

Just another data point. Using wifi in the
basement on the triple core
Debian box I was getting disconnected from the internet every 5-10 minutes,
though the network manager claimed I was still connected. I had to
disconnect and reconnect to ping the world. I thought it was just me and
Linux's partial support for proprietary wireless chipsets, and spent a
couple of hours trying various newer kernels, firmware, compiling drivers,
etc., to no avail.
Last night I was on line for 7 hours or so and I don't think I was
disconnected at all, though a large file I was downloading seemed to drop
at one point (Kali Linux 2018.1 iso file, 2.9 GB). So the problem seems to
be mostly resolved for me, thanks Yar and others.

last two hours... It
does seem like it's a whole lot worse with more users: for the last (two?
three?) months that this has been going on, when there's lots of folks here
I lose connection every few minutes while it might only be once or twice an
hour early in the morning or very late at night when the building is nearly
empty and I've even left my machine running overnight on multiple occasions
since this started and found it still connected in the morning despite
continuous disconnects throughout the day, so there does seem to be a
relationship between disconnection frequency and the number of people
connected.

a) Found the time zone was set to "Casablanca". -It is possible that I
didn't change it during its initial set up. Now is set to Pacific ST.

experience any WiFi connectivity issues. I asked someone that is here, and
he said that been online for about five hours, and also has not noticed any
issues with the WiFi.
Speed Test show about 60Mbps/13Mbps.

Just another data point. Using wifi in the
basement on the triple core
Debian box I was getting disconnected from the internet every 5-10 minutes,
though the network manager claimed I was still connected. I had to
disconnect and reconnect to ping the world. I thought it was just me and
Linux's partial support for proprietary wireless chipsets, and spent a
couple of hours trying various newer kernels, firmware, compiling drivers,
etc., to no avail.
Last night I was on line for 7 hours or so and I don't think I was
disconnected at all, though a large file I was downloading seemed to drop
at one point (Kali Linux 2018.1 iso file, 2.9 GB). So the problem seems to
be mostly resolved for me, thanks Yar and others.

The Dell PowerEdge Server (hostname 'space' or space.local) used to be
the gateway between the internet and our two LANs (192.168.42.x &
100.64.6x.x)
I set up a new smaller server directly above it (hostname 'saros') and
configured it as a drop-in replacement - it took all the old gateway's
IP addresses.
The dell server (space.local) is still up under a different IP address
(192.168.42.2). It's now acting as a shell server, and is no longer a
router. I made saros forward space's old ssh port so that peoples' ssh
configs would still work without any changes. You can ssh to both of
them from outside using different ports on the same domain/ip, but
they're still two different machines - maybe that part is the source
of confusion?

that 'space' (new public network ip: 100.64.64.2) is plugged into the wrong
switch (Private network switch 192.168.x.x IP scheme). -This may explain
what I couldn't reach switches from that box a couple of nights ago, when
Yar got my public key added.
If no one objects, I unplugging 'space' off the Private network top switch
(192.168.x.x) and plugging in the public network bottom switch
(100.64.64.x).
*DNS + DHCP IP?*
Questions: What are the Private and Public networks DNS and DhCP server
IPs?
I want to make sure the two switches have their "ip helper address" correct.

1: I meant, NTP server, not SNTP. :p
2: I never got the info I requested, so I am not sure if the "Private"
switch is all good or not. It should not affect the WiFi, since all AP are
running on the "Public" network.

As we discussed in person, space.local was supposed to be on the
private network at 192.168.42.2, and we moved it back. Not sure why
you weren't able to reach it.
Saros is the gateway for both networks: 192.168.42.1 on private
network and 100.64.64.1 on public. It serves dhcp and dns on both.
I thought I labelled the box pretty thoroughly. Did I make a mistake?

The sticker on Saros is super clear.
There was a bit of confusion, on my side, and I needed clarification about
the DHCP IP# for the private network.
Anyhow, I was able to connect to the private network switch from "
room.sudoroom.org" (aka "space") and I changed its SNTP IP.
The rest of the info still valid as we are today.
