I'm sorry if this isn't really correct for this list, but I thought it
would be best to ask. I've just moved to Walnut Creek from a small city.
While I know it not to be fully true, I've always heard the standard
sterotype/generalization that 'Oakland isn't safe, blah blah blah, you're
going to get shot/mugged/other'. I would love to come vist Sudoroom,
everything I've read about it and the people there seems like a great time.
I suppose my question is "would I be safe to take BART down from Walnut
Creek to MacArthur and walk to sudo? Should I be worried?".
Any tips? I'm sorry, I'm just new around here.

Hi Mike,
You will be fine taking BART and walking to Sudo Room.
Crime can happen anywhere in the world. I don't know what you've heard, but,
Oakland is a cool place. It certainly isn't like the worst places in Detroit. (Urban
Basic street smarts tip, for anywhere in the world when you feel anything weird, it is
fine (and good) to cross the street.)

during the day i would have to say, yes: but only unequivocally if you
take telegraph. get a walking partner. at night, i would advise against
walking alone, even though i think it is quite safe.

there's more i could say on the subject. topics, off the top of my head,
include:
- eye contact,
- how to monitor environment,
- what to do if it seems sketchy,
- what is stereotypically 'sketchy' in oakland,
- what sort of 'front'* to put forth,
- basic preliminary precautions, and
- other asst. dos and don'ts.
also, good to connect with others and see if anyone making the trek has a
similar timetable.
...for some reason i feel the need to add that i was born, grew up in, and
have lived as an adult in some *very* sketchy neighborhoods, with the
only... incident ... in this area arising in a situation for which i was
not expecting any healthy paranoia to be called.

sure come on down any time, best route is head east on 40th to telegraph
then head north on telegraph and take a left at 48th just after
lanesplitter pizza - we're one block down at 48th and shattuck. not a
bad area at all. like mitch says, you should keep your wits about you
in any city or even town.
