James and I got robbed at gunpoint, right outside the side entrance, at
about 2:45AM on Saturday 01 June. Nothing like thinking that you & a
friend are about to die, to screw up an otherwise great night.
No injuries, just terror. The guy wanted our cellphones. Lucky us, I
don't have one and James had left his upstairs. He got our wallets. It
could have been worse, he could have killed both of us.
OK, time for the kick-myself-in-the-arse maneuver, for not having gone
inside the moment we saw an unknown guy walking down the street toward us
late at night. I should know better, hell I _do_ know better, but my
safety-sense was down just long enough for the robber to get close enough
to pull the gun, and the rest as they say, isn't history, just another
statistic that got personal.
QUESTION: HOW DO WE GET THE SURVEILLANCE VIDEOS FROM OUR BUILDING AND THE
ONE NEXTDOOR?

New subject: NEED TO CONTACT LANDLORD ASAP FOR SURVEILLANCE VIDS
Talked to George, the landlord.
He gave me the user & password for the live stream of the cameras - I need to be
on-site to get the IP address. I will make that available in some security-sensible way to
Sudo folk at that time.
Unfortunately regarding last night - the recording had been shut down. [in part due to
privacy concerns that have been raised.] He said the green building across 22nd has
cameras along there and that they've always been very cooperative. I will talk to the
security guard there when I head down to Sudo Room momentarily.
I think that this event underscores the urgency of participating in protecting ourselves
through a more vigilant and thoughtful security plan - so that we can truly watch out for
each others' backs and make our best effort to fight this crime-susceptible state of
affairs in our neighborhood.

Who raised "privacy concerns" I dont think it was Sudo Room. We've known
there was a camera there for a while now. A hat and sun glasses will defeat
that if anyone wanted to be anonymous.
Thats upsetting that Goerge disabled recording secretly at the request of
someone.

Let me be clear - George did not disable recording because of a private concern.
The camera on the outside had gone off-line and he was in the process of having it all
repaired and up.
The privacy concerns comment was inserted by me - because he had in the past been open to
hearing ideas about how to best deal with the surveillance cameras and access by Sudo
Room.
The way I had written it came out different than I meant to say it. the paranthetical
should have been [we've been in discussions with George about the cameras and he has
been willing to give access to Sudo Room, but was cautious about how to deal with
recordings.

So sorry this happened to you. I'm starting to be really glad that I have a shitty
phone no one could even resell. I guess that is one of the main things robbers look for,
is the iPhone, since it's easy to turn into fast cash. The same thing happened to my
kid last week outside the Lake Merritt Bart station :(
Oakland is number one in the US for robberies now.

Sorry for the multiple emails.
There is another camera pointed right the entrance door that could have captured it and
was recording at the time. Talking to the Green Art Deco building security was
under-helpful and after-thoughtful.
I am now heading to George's house to try and see the tapes for myself and will also
learn how to get access to the live feeds (and/or) recordings and will document it for
other Sudo folk. Will try to catch people at the end of Today I Learned to further
disseminate.
