It's a 2013 laptop; 4GB of RAM, two CPUs, and a built-in Radeon HD 8240
GPU. Not very fast, and the battery doesn't hold much charge. But it's
been reliably doing home server work for the last year!
Is this something sudo would be interested in having?

1st WNB coding night tonight! 🎉 If you identify as women/nb, come over!
Not sure how many will stop by, but excited! Will get there at 7, I think I
have everything I need, but what's the best way to contact any of you if
something comes up? Email this group?
Will report back how it went!

Anyone want to help a recent transplant to find the candidates that match
my politics for this upcoming election?
I'm aware that Omni and Sudoroom are required to be apolitical entities to
maintain their tax status, so I want to be clear that I'm asking for
individuals to give their personal advice on where to find voting guides
and what candidates I should inform myself about. No one's personal
opinions in this email constitute any kind of endorsement by Omni or
Sudoroom.

I'll be unavailable to host Hardware Hacking Tuesday this coming week, can
someone else do it? it's easy, you just host and onboard new people (not
babies, i mean people new to sudoroom) and explain to them the simple concept
of how things work here

In case my request gets lost, sending here a request to add the event we've
been talking about. Description is below, I think I would need that
Wordpress password to add it by myself, I looked at GitHub and I don't
think it's over there. Up to you folks, I'm fine with getting the password
or someone just adding the text below. I would like to add it to the wiki
as well.

Does sudo room have a photocopy machine or risograph? Or just access to one
at Omni Commons? Or does anyone have access to one that can make copies for
free? Just wanted to print some flyers for the WNB night and spread around
in the neighborhood.

Hey, that's my first email to the group👋 I sent the same msg below to `
info(a)sudoroom.org` and got some answers from Jake and Andrew, who told me
to post here. So here it goes:
---------------------------------------
Hey, this is Juliana, a bit about myself, I'm originally from Brazil, have
been living in Oakland for 10 yrs, and in the last 3 ones I got more
involved in the tech world. In 2019 I joined a software eng bootcamp and
since 2020 I've been working as a software engineer. I never imagined I was
going to work in tech one day, much less be a software engineer. Having a
non-tech background and being a person from several underrepresented groups
in tech make it hard to imagine that's even a possibility.
Anyways, it's because of that that I've been trying to volunteer more and
more to help the community to conquer what I got, and that's where Sudo
Rooms gets in. I've heard about Sudo Room maybe 3 years ago but never had
the opportunity to be part of an event (cause pandemic..). I would love to
help organize some kind of event with women/nb only and have a "coding
night", where we can help each other in coding projects or even help ppl to
learn how to code. I see you folks have a JS night, so it would prob be
something similar.
I emphasize the women/nb only because this is a real barrier in tech, I
studied in a women/nb only bootcamp and that totally made a difference.
Even when men are allies and empathize with beginners, It's all about
seeing that other non-men can do that and feel empowered by that.
About my skills, I'm still Level I but have been working with Ruby on
Rails, Python, SQL, React, Typescript. I'm full stack although I prefer
backend :) So far I've volunteered/attended events from Techtonica, Women
who Code, Wnb.rb, Ruby for Good, Lesbians who Tech, PyLadies, etc.

I changed the subject line to the other thread we were talking about, with a
public information monitor in the main entrance hall. I agree that sudoroom
should have one too.
Personally I don't like raspberry pi's, they're too expensive and I dislike
broadcomm...but if we have them then i guess they're good for this purpose and
are power-efficient. We have tons of monitors and can totally dedicate one on
the sudoroom tables, facing the entrance, for a welcome screen. I recommend
fixing the pi onto the back of the monitor and making the whole thing easy to
pick up and move around.
As for the entrance hall, it's the same basic idea, and so we should keep that
in mind and work on both equally.
We might even put a monitor outside the front door! If it gets vandalized, we
can recycle it and put another one out there, we have so many monitors it's not
a problem.

With the discussion around masking, let me just forward this email that I
sent to the Omni discuss list yesterday...

Subject: Covid numbers rising rapidly around the Bay
For those of you who have gotten used to thinking that Covid is over -
here's a reminder that we are still very much in the midst of a pandemic!
The two metrics that I personally put most stock in these days include
wastewater monitoring, and *asymptomatic* test positivity rates.
Covid levels in East Bay wastewater have been rising rapidly over the past
few weeks, and are now back at levels we've seen during the main Omicron
surge early January:
https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/CalSuWers-Dashboar…
<https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/CalSuWers-Dashboar…>
As far as I know, only UCSF reports asymptomatic test positivity rate,
which is currently around 3.4% - see https://coronavirus.ucsf.edu/dashboard
Meaning that if you are in a room with 30 perfectly healthy looking people,
there will likely be at least one who has an asymptomatic infection and may
be infecting others.
The good news is that infection fatality rate has dropped to almost the
same level as the flu, thanks to vaccinations, protection from prior
infections, and improved drugs to treat Covid patients. It is still a
pretty nasty disease though, so do yourself a favor, and keep that mask on
indoors and whenever you're in a crowd!
