No, *not *that CIA, but the*Conceptual Information Arts Department at SFSU (CIA) * http://userwww.sfsu.edu/infoarts/ I saw that they have a course in Art & Biology. This is so interesting. Have any of the sudoshroomers done any art & biology projects? The possibilities are endless!!!! <3 A lot of people are in the Experimental Sound meetup that meets at the end of the month. I hung out ato ne of their parties last night . Would be cool to get some biohacking art going on in the SudoRoom! *Art & Biology* Whether the cycles of life act as an inspiration or are actually incorporated into your art-making process, the study of biology can be a hotbed of novel visions. In this course we will attempt to reinvent the concepts and practices of biology in an artistic context. Possibilities may include: playing with microbes and microscopes, studying embryonic development, visiting laboratories and discussing recent advances in molecular biology. Living art projects will be encouraged.

Also, a reminder that we have to have Ludlow over to check out what we've been up to. sent from eddan.com APRIL 13, 2013, 1:36 PM Hacktivists as Gadflies By PETER LUDLOW Around 400 B.C., Socrates was brought to trial on charges of corrupting the youth of Athens and “impiety.” Presumably, however, people believed then as we do now, that Socrates’ real crime was being too clever and, not insignificantly, a royal pain to those in power or, as Plato put it, a gadfly. Just as a gadfly is an insect that could sting a horse and prod it into action, so too could Socrates sting the state. He challenged the moral values of his contemporaries and refused to go along with unjust demands of tyrants, often obstructing their plans when he could. Socrates thought his service to Athens should have earned him free dinners for life. He was given a cup of hemlock instead. We have had gadflies among us ever since, but one contemporary breed in particular has come in for a rough time of late: the “hacktivist.” While none have yet been forced to drink hemlock, the state has come down on them with remarkable force. This is in large measure evidence of how poignant, and troubling, their message has been. Hacktivists, roughly speaking, are individuals who redeploy and repurpose technology for social causes. In this sense they are different from garden-variety hackers out to enrich only themselves. People like Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Bill Gates began their careers as hackers — they repurposed technology, but without any particular political agenda. In the case of Mr. Jobs and Mr. Wozniak, they built and sold “blue boxes,” devices that allowed users to defraud the phone company. Today, of course, these people are establishment heroes, and the contrast between their almost exalted state and the scorn being heaped upon hacktivists is instructive. For some reason, it seems that the government considers hackers who are out to line their pockets less of a threat than those who are trying to make a political point. Consider the case of Andrew Auernheimer, better known as “Weev.” When Weev discovered in 2010 that AT&T had left private information about its customers vulnerable on the Internet, he and a colleague wrote a script to access it. Technically, he did not “hack” anything; he merely executed a simple version of what Google Web crawlers do every second of every day — sequentially walk through public URLs and extract the content. When he got the information (the e-mail addresses of 114,000 iPad users, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Rahm Emanuel, then the White House chief of staff), Weev did not try to profit from it; he notified the blog Gawker of the security hole. For this service Weev might have asked for free dinners for life, but instead he was recently sentenced to 41 months in prison and ordered to pay a fine of more than $73,000 in damages to AT&T to cover the cost of notifying its customers of its own security failure. When the federal judge Susan Wigenton sentenced Weev on March 18, she described him with prose that could have been lifted from the prosecutor Meletus in Plato’s “Apology.” “You consider yourself a hero of sorts,” she said, and noted that Weev’s “special skills” in computer coding called for a more draconian sentence. I was reminded of a line from an essay written in 1986 by a hacker called the Mentor: “My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.” When offered the chance to speak, Weev, like Socrates, did not back down: “I don’t come here today to ask for forgiveness. I’m here to tell this court, if it has any foresight at all, that it should be thinking about what it can do to make amends to me for the harm and the violence that has been inflicted upon my life.” He then went on to heap scorn upon the law being used to put him away — the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the same law that prosecutors used to go after the 26-year-old Internet activist Aaron Swartz, who committed suicide in January. The law, as interpreted by the prosecutors, makes it a felony to use a computer system for “unintended” applications, or even violate a terms-of-service agreement. That would theoretically make a felon out of anyone who lied about their age or weight on Match.com. The case of Weev is not an isolated one. Barrett Brown, a journalist who had achieved some level of notoriety as the “the former unofficial not-spokesman for Anonymous,” the hacktivist group, now sits in federal custody in Texas. Mr. Brown came under the scrutiny of the authorities when he began poring over documents that had been released in the hack of two private security companies, HBGary Federal and Stratfor. Mr. Brown did not take part in the hacks, but he did become obsessed with the contents that emerged from them — in particular the extracted documents showed that private security contractors were being hired by the United States government to develop strategies for undermining protesters and journalists, including Glenn Greenwald, a columnist for Salon. Since the cache was enormous, Mr. Brown thought he might crowdsource the effort and copied and pasted the URL from an Anonymous chat server to a Web site called Project PM, which was under his control. Just to be clear, what Mr. Brown did was repost the URL from a Web site that was publicly available on the Internet. Because Stratfor had not encrypted the credit card information of its clients, the information in the cache included credit card numbers and validation numbers. Mr. Brown didn’t extract the numbers or highlight them; he merely offered a link to the database. For this he was charged on 12 counts, all of which pertained to credit card fraud. The charges against him add up to about 100 years in federal prison. It was “virtually impossible,” Mr. Greenwald, wrote recently in The Guardian, his new employer, “to conclude that the obscenely excessive prosecution he now faces is unrelated to that journalism and his related activism.” Other hacktivists have felt the force of the United States government in recent months, and all reflect an alarming contrast between the severity of the punishment and the flimsiness of the actual charges. The case of Aaron Swartz has been well documented. Jeremy Hammond, who reportedly played a direct role in the Stratfor and HBGary hacks, has been in jail for more than a year awaiting trial. Mercedes Haefer, a journalism student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, faces charges for hosting an Internet Relay Chat channel where an Anonymous denial of service attack was planned. Most recently, Matthew Keys, a 26-year-old social-media editor at Reuters, who allegedly assisted hackers associated with Anonymous (who reportedly then made a prank change to a Los Angeles Times headline), was indicted on federal charges that could result in more than $750,000 in fines and prison time, inciting a new outcry against the law and its overly harsh enforcement. The list goes on. In a world in which nearly everyone is technically a felon, we rely on the good judgment of prosecutors to decide who should be targets and how hard the law should come down on them. We have thus entered a legal reality not so different from that faced by Socrates when the Thirty Tyrants ruled Athens, and it is a dangerous one. When everyone is guilty of something, those most harshly prosecuted tend to be the ones that are challenging the established order, poking fun at the authorities, speaking truth to power — in other words, the gadflies of our society. Hi everyone, I'm a new potential member (see you at the Python meetup tonight). I'd like to share an essay by Bruce Schneier: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2010/04/privacy_and_con.html "To the older generation, privacy is about secrecy. And, as the Supreme Court said, once something is no longer secret, it's no longer private. But that's not how privacy works, and it's not how the younger generation thinks about it. Privacy is about control. [...] Your loss of control over that information is the issue. We may not mind sharing our personal lives and thoughts, but we want to control how, where and with whom. A privacy failure is a control failure." With that in mind, here are my personal commandments for software that I write: -- If someone is ever surprised by the privacy outcome of a piece of software, the software needs to be made more clear. Never blame the user for not understanding things -- Allow people to delete or take down their content -- The extent to which content is indexed / searchable matters. There's a practical difference between public-but-not-searchable and public-and-appears-on-Google. Technically neither is secret, but that's not the only thing that matters. -- Things that people say in an ephemeral context, like small talk, should stay ephemeral. One way to move forward would be to have two lists -- a public archived-forever one and a private ephemeral one. I'm curious about the future implications of big data, sharing and employer profiling. Suppose I said on the publicly searchable google list that I love drinking Coca-Cola more than Pepsi. Suppose I hacked a Coca-Cola jacket etc. and said I just "wasn't into" Pepsi. Now suppose that that thread was the first thing to show up in a list of googleable searches for my name. If I were to interview at a dot com for a developer position and that firm had close business associations with Pepsi but not Coca-Cola, then I might not get hired. Or if big data became very powerful, a potential health insurer could see that I drank Coca-Cola, and it's less healthy than Pepsi, and charge me higher rates, rates as high as someone who has severe diabetes. How would that go? So I know that this list is open, and I'm joining it knowing it's transparent, but I'm wondering how much more we will have to edit our opinions in the future in order to remain reputable or employable. I propose we discuss Crowdfunding, as part of the effort to stimulate our exploration of these sorts of sources of revenue. Please contact Evan Savage through Tech Liminal for more about that. Crowdfunding. What does it mean and how does it work? Why is it the biggest buzz word since social media? Will it really circumvent the flow of investment capital to bypass Wall Street? Can it stimulate new jobs in the small business enterprise and contractors markets? Sudo Square

Hi all - I wanted to ask a flash-mob like favor from folks coming to Sudo Room this evening. Over the summer, several of us created the Sudo Square page at Foursquare (https://foursquare.com/v/sudo-square/50074796e4b092cb5fe8c83d) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sudo-Square/351059718301717) as part of a plan to name the plaza at the intersection of Broadway, 19th, & Franklin. Can you please check-in on your way in? It's a lovely day and the Punchdown (http://www.punchdownwine.com/) already put out the outdoor table seating. I'll be hanging out there until the meeting and will remind Sudo folk I see. Given the democratization of nomenclature afforded by geo-located mobile computing, I thought it most appropriate to have some kind of coordinated crowd in-checking initiative. There are some pictures, but it's a placeholder so far. So far as we know (& the Oakland Wiki folks could correct us), the square does not yet have a name. So not just today - but anytime - when you're passing by 22nd & Broadway and you're itching to check in on Facebook or Foursquare, or Yelp, or however it is you go about telling the world instantaneously where you are - please check in at Sudo Square - often and tell your friends about it too. I am also now trying to compile a list of the existing sites & services use for geo-located check-in fun - so let me know if you know of others. Ex-cheque-ing / can't make it tonight + a proposal re: reimbursing Max for (upcoming) internet costs

I can't make the meeting tonight - I apologize! - but I would like to propose that we discuss writing a check for the internet costs to Max Klein. As far as I know the facts: We don't currently have a VISA / MasterCard account, which is necessary to have an account with Sonic, so Max has been paying with his own card. I'd like to write him a check for the internet this month. Once we're in a better position in terms of solvency / reserves, I'd like to discuss reimbursing him for the internet costs, but I don't think we're in a position to do that just yet. As far as the spreadsheets, I'm trying to get our account data from Community Bank of the Bay so I can go back through the last three months' columns in the solvency spreadsheet - the one shared with everyone - and update the balance information. There's currently a single spreadsheet for donations / membership dues - also shared with everyone - so please use it if you've collected any dues and deposited them into our account. I'd like it to reflect _all_ transactions as of April, though I realize that going back and entering in this retroactively may be nigh impossible. I'd like to have a discussion about how best to handle membership / access... it's my vision that some piece of software can generate an "active" membership list - of those members who've paid for the current month - and that this membership list will be accessible by the software that handles access to the space. What policies would revolve around that - who would get access, for which months, when, with what system etc. - I leave up to consensus. "Let’s not stop the innovation. I don’t want to shut it down," she told a roomful of developers and businesspeople at the startup co-working office space Runway Workspace in the South of Market area of San Francisco. "But what we do have to do is to give the user information, and let the user, not anyone else, make the choice about the tradeoff." Harris spoke at an event organized by her own office, the University of California Hastings (her alma mater) and the Association for Competitive Technology, an association in Washington, D.C. that represents individual software developers who often can't afford to hire their own in-house privacy counsel. Her remarks come as the Obama administration itself is struggling to work with all kinds of stakeholders on how to best protect consumers in a world where their devices are always on, and using the attributes of personal information and location to build their businesses. Harris' office published a 20 page-plus booklet of checklists and recommendations for app developers<http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/pdfs/privacy/privacy_on_the_go.pdf>to be mindful of when creating their products this January. The Electronic Frontier Foundation<https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/01/california-attorney-general-releases-…>, a digital rights group, praised the recommendations, but several advertising associations, including the American Association of Advertising agencies, called them "unworkable." Her office established a special privacy enforcement and protection unit last July, staffed with some high-powered lawyers, such as Travis LeBlanc, formerly a lawyer at the white-shoe law firms of Williams & Connelly in Washington, D.C., and Keker & Van Nest in San Francisco. How state attorneys general approach privacy in the digital world is of great interest to practitioners in political technology. San Francisco-based Organizer, for example, enables campaigns to track their field canvassers with GPSes on their mobile phones as they knock on doors and updates information in its voter database in real-time as volunteers collect new data. As users do more and more from their phones, mobile advertising has gained increasing attention from political campaigns. And one of the biggest innovations to come from the Obama campaign in 2012 was software that avoided potential Federal Election Commission roadblocks against collecting mobile donations by allowing donors to authorize, by text message or otherwise, a gift from their credit card account already on file. The terms of service governing these and many other applications are breaking new legal ground, and consumers are just beginning to understand how their data is shared, used, bought and sold — in politics and otherwise. Harris is an apt character to follow in the privacy debate. She may be the only attorney general in the country to have made privacy policies a campaign issue when, in 2010, she accused her then-Democratic rival Chris Kelly, Facebook's former chief privacy officer, of giving Facebook's users' information away, a charge that Kelly's campaign denied. "Some people might not mind giving up their contact list to get that mobile app, because they only have four people in it, and they don’t like them anyway," Harris joked at the event. "Me, not so much. I don’t want to give up my contact list. Let the user figure out what the benefit is before they give it up." Harris urged developers to tell their users as much as possible about how they use their information, and to give them 'tools' to let them make their choices. The Association for Competitive Technology is working on such tools, like a privacy dashboard <http://www.bitly.com/pridash> that would tell app users, through icons, what information is being collected. "I am a career prosecutor. I know the great power that we have," Harris told the audience. "I learned at a very young age in my career that with a swipe of my pen, I could charge someone with a misdemeanor, the lowest level of crime possible, and by virtue of doing that, that person would have to pick out of their pockets to hire a lawyer. They may be arrested, they may spend a couple of hours or days in jail, they’ll be embarrassed in the context of their family and community, probably have to miss time from work for court appearances – all because I charged him with a crime. It’s an incredible amount of power that we have, and we’re well aware of that." Some developers at the meeting Wednesday morning said that they weren't aware of all of the legal requirements they had to fulfill when building their apps, and some even suggested that Google wouldn't have been possible as a company had all these rules on privacy been in place at its founding, a notion that LeBlanc contested during a later panel. Jerome Starch, a developer who attended a NASA hackathon in March and who is developing an app with information from NASA to get kids interested in science, stood up after Harris left, and said her words "terrified" him. Oh, I was the one who donated the admittedly unlabeled lidded-stockpot to NB, specifically to brew kombucha there. For the one person who already responded with their "invitation" offlist, I neither prefer to come over to SR to join the groups' mate/kombucha/whatever-other-foodhacking-else brewing efforts there (whether for-profit or entirely non-profit), nor do I wish to pay a special SR visit in-person to pickup the lidded-stockpot.
