Hey Emu,
I did some searching, and here's what I found:
First:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCHNCAkBNT8
This guy describe solutions to backup an SD card without a computer. The
main one is a $90 product that I think does some of what you want, although
I'm not sure.
The second option is something like this:
https://create.arduino.cc/projecthub/andreiflorian/back-up-sd-file-to-dropb…
It's a DIY solution that appears to do exactly what you want, although the
main component looks like it's out of production, and the main replacement
is $55, which is kinda pricey before we even consider making a case and
battery and such.
There are some other DIY possibilities, but before I dove into those I came
across this:
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MJYT2AM/A/lightning-to-sd-card-camera-re…
It's an iPhone-compatible SD card reader. Would that work?

I have a 120 gallon water tank and a huge solar thermal collector, which I want to put in sudoroom.
Does anyone have a vehicle that can transport a big cylinder, and a strong back so we can do this together?
Also, we will need radiators, to act as heat distributors in sudoroom - a car radiator would be nice. I feel like there was one laying around at some point but i don't know where it is anymore.
Anyone who is available to help with this project to bring nice solar heating to sudoroom, please speak up.

Hi, I'm at SudoRoom rn, I see the printer got fixed (thanks for doing it!),
and I was able to copy a page but having a hard time printing from a
computer. Does it have bluetooth/wifi? I wasn't able to find it to install

Then I was trying to print from a communal ubuntu desktop, I see a Canon
printer but it seems like a different model? Also when I try to print from
it, file just gets queued but nothing happens. (printer is on)

I need to power a device with an LCD screen running on a Raspberry Pi.
Both need 5 V. The Pi needs about 3 Amps. The screen needs between 0.5 and
1 A, depending on brightness. So I figure I can power both off of a shared
5 V power supply as long as it provides at least 4 A. But I can't find a 5V
4A power supply. So I'm wondering... could I just wire two 5V 2.5A power
supplies in parallel? Would this work? I feels wrong but I can't think of
why.

I was talking to Jake and Elaine at a recent meeting, and Jake mentioned
that we've got some kind of laser soldering gun or something.
Coincidentally, I've just started using the soldering stations, and
honestly I'm noticing how much I don't know.
So I was thinking of putting together an afternoon where we could all bust
out some of this exotic stuff AND I might also just pick people's brains
about how to use solderpaste well. We can definitely do it again if there's
interest, but I primarily see this as a discrete event. If I were to
organize this, how many people could I rope into answering my questions?
Would people be more available on a weeknight or weekend afternoon?

Heya,
CCL has kicked off an environmental working group on account of local
concerns and, well...the apocalypse, in general.
One of our focuses is on water quality and thus we are wondering if anyone

questions about the water supply and are looking for answers beyond the
public-facing powerpoint slide deck.

I've set up a jitsi terminal on the wall in Sudoroom!
It's a big TV made by Hitachi, and it has a feature where it can go into "power
saving" mode when the HDMI signal is lost. That means the screen can power
down when DPMS puts the monitor to "sleep". It has a webcam that's clearly
labeled, and on a hinge so it can easily be aimed down at the floor if people
are shy, and it has a Jabra USB speaker/microphone thing which should hopefully
provide good speakerphone functionality. I have the computer setup to start
firefox, and i have firefox set to open the jitsi page, where permissions are
already enabled for webcam/audio. The only remaining need is to automatically
wake the monitor from sleep (using "DISPLAY=:0 xset force dpms on") whenever
there is anyone else detected in the jitsi "room"
This feature is important so that people can see (on the screen) whenever
someone is in the screen/camera/microphone with them. For now the monitor is
either left on a lot, or blanks out due to a timeout.
I've determined that the most direct ways to make the monitor turn on when
anyone joins the jitsi channel are:
1. make an XMPP client in python or something, which connects to the server and
finds out how many people are in the room (and whether there's anyone other
than the telescreen in there) and sets the monitor on/off state accordingly
2. make a browser extension to find the element containing the number of
"Meeting participants" and copy the number to the window title, where it can be
observed from the shell with a command like wmctrl -l
<div class="jss52">Meeting participants (2)</div>
unfortunately the div class is not always jss52 but the innertext is always
Meeting Participans(#) so it should be able to be found.
The idea is that with this setup, people can go on jitsi and talk to whomever
is in sudoroom, as well as each other.
presently i'm using this link but that can change if we find something better:
https://meet.waag.org/turtlesturtlesturtles
note: the telescreen in sudoroom is not signed in right now, not sure why but
i'll fix it asap
Hey Sudoers,
I'll be in hosting Open Shop Sunday today from 2 to 6.
If you need access to the space or just like company it's a great time to
come on by!

Hello Sudo Room Folks!
There will be a cute fundraiser gathering happening at Omni 11/11. We would
love it if Sudo Room can create a table to engage participants in peeking
at what cool things happen at Sudo room! Let me know if this is possible
for folks? Otherwise get your tickets and share the event ! :)
We plan to dedicate some time from the event to recognize and appreciate
all the valuable volunteers that steward the Omni!

Hi all,
I'm a bit confused about what's happening with Signal. I know many if not
all of you use it, and I do too. But many of my contacts are not using
Signal and are unlikely to change if I ask them to (iPhone people are
especially attached to their Message app I find). So does the change (not
supporting SMS/MMS) mean that I have to abandon Signal altogether? I can't
use two texting apps at the same time can I?
I'd appreciate any advice and recommendations.
thanks

Does anyone know what happened to the large free-standing bandsaw? It was

We've gotten many complaints recently about omni's wifi being totally open
and not password protected. Many folks are afraid of their devices being
attacked if they join our network. And tbh I don't blame them.
I think we should offer a wpa-protected network for those who want one. But
I don't have the capacity to work on that. Does it sound fun to anybody
else?
We used to have a private subnet which would have made this easier, but it
got unceremoniously merged with the public one a few years ago. One useful
side task would be to identify and label all the ethernet cables running
out of our one remaining switch. Some of them could provide the backbone of
a new network.
Dear Sudo Room,
Here's your invoice! We appreciate your prompt payment.
Thank you for stewarding the commons.

I’ve been collaborating with some cool women on a two day rollerskate and skateboard ball event with classes at the Omni commons. It was going to be in November to help raise money for the Omni by the deadline but people had family commitments
However I think this is genuinely true energy and creativity that will pull in a lot of other projects at the Omni such as the media lab (costumes for the ball,m) and interesting SudoRoom Workshop stuff like helping make skate obstacles or rigging the ones they will bring
They also will be spending a day after teaching skate classss (they have taught all over the world)
Is there a way to put this event into any loan proposals ? I think this would breathe fresh life into the Omni, get more of a physical event in the space . We were able to figure out where to skate and jot hurt the ballroom floor

Is there any printer at sudo room that is ready to use? (AKA, it works, has
ink on it and whatever else needed to print something) I'd like to print
some flyers for WNB coding night. Doesn’t need to be colored ink or
anything fancy.
I found this printer but it says no ink

I've been receiving emails with the title "[sudo-accounts] Your payout of
$xxx for sudoroom.org is on the way", I'm not sure how I managed to start
receiving them or how to stop them, anyone able to clarify?

Sudoroom, we need to form a position on this proposal! Omni wants to invite
East Bay Democratic Socialists of America to rent the upstairs room that's
getting built.
I think this is a no-brainer and we should approve it! Please write back
indicating your position on this!
your delegate to the Omni Commons,

Subject: [omni-consensus] PROPOSAL: EBDSA in den
We talked a lot last week about putting EBDSA in the upstairs den, but
never formally proposed it, so here it is. I propose we put EBDSA in
the new room we're building up there. After haggling with Max on the
phone just now, it sounds like this is the most do-able agreement:
* they'll pay $1250/month with first/last/deposit
* they move in november 1 or whenever the wall is finished
* they sign a year lease, with the understanding that if omni loses
the building, it'll probably be unenforcable
* we host their next two GM assemblies for free (Nov 13 & Feb 12) and
then renegotiate in the spring whether to start charging for it again
* they are not yet applying to be a member collective, but may want to
in the future
Thoughts? Can we decide next week? Next delegate meeting is Thu Oct
20th 7-9pm https://meet.google.com/diw-hszw-msr

Have you always wanted to host a recurring event at sudoroom? Now's your
chance!
it seems that we still have "Javascript Thursdays" on the sudoroom calendar, as
a recurring event every week:
https://sudoroom.org/events/categories/sudo-room-events/
unfortunately, we haven't been actually hosting the event on thursdays
so...people may have been coming and getting confused and giving up on us.
this thursday I just HAPPENED to be at sudoroom on Thursday at that time (I was
joining the delegates meeting from there) and someone walked in who saw JS
Thursdays on the calendar! Isn't it lucky I was there?
I can't commit to hosting a second weekly event though, also i'm only just
learning Javascript and it wouldn't be right for me to host!
So who wants to do it? It will be a lot of fun. And like our other events, it
doesn't have to be strictly about any one thing - we just need something to
call the event.

Hey Sudoers,
I can't be on site tonight, but we have a few agenda items that would
benefit from a meeting if others can. I will drop in over video chat. A
prospective member,Ajay, is going to video in as well.
Here's their declaration:
Why do you want to be a member of sudo room?
Looking for more community, support the mesh in my neighborhood, support
the Omni
If you know already, what are you excited to do at sudo room?:
Mesh the planet, connect, help people get and give tech support including
myself
If you know already, what are you excited to share with the sudo room
community?:
Connections, resources
Have you ever been banned from another hackerspace? If so, when and why?:
No
Hi everyone,
You're getting this email either because 1) you're on the sudoroom discuss
email list, or 2) because I BCC'd you directly.
Tonight I'll be hosting Sudoroom for those who want to come hack on whatever,
in person, or through telepresence (see the last link in this email)
ALSO NOW FEATURING: SoftWEAR hacking too: most Tuesday evenings the sewing area
at Omni Commons (in the basement) is also active so bring your fabric and
textile projects and technical repairs; we've got heavy duty and serger sewing
machines available. You're also welcome to bring your own machine to have it
checked out and tuned up for tip-top operation or to just sew alongside others.
Remember that Omni Commons and Sudoroom policy is presently still that
EVERYONE SHOULD WEAR A MASK AT ALL TIMES INSIDE THE BUILDING
(if you want to eat something you should go outside)
in the past few weeks, we've had about 5-15 people over the course of the
evening, not including remote participants who logged in through telepresence
Jenny put it on the Omni calendar:
https://omnicommons.org/blog/events/hardware-hack-night-3-2022-03-01/
Here it is on the sudoroom page:
https://sudoroom.org/events/hardware-hack-night-2022-02-15/
that says 7PM but I try to be there earlier.
if you get to the door (at the corner of 48th and shattuck) and you can't get
in, call me or someone else who's there to let you in! Email me if you don't
have my phone number. Actually a great way to get our attention is to join the
video chat link at the end of this email!
We don't always hear the doorbell and I don't answer it anyway!
You should get on this sudoroom discuss mailinglist! click here:
https://sudoroom.org/lists/postorius/lists/sudo-discuss.sudoroom.org/
and you should donate monthly to sudoroom, monthly, by signing up here:
https://sudoroom.org/humans
and if you want to make a one-time donation, you can go here:
https://sudoroom.org/donate
if you can't make it in person: join the jitsi videochat with the room, and
chat with each other as well as a giant TV screen/speakerphone on the wall:
https://meet.waag.org/turtlesturtlesturtles
(don't worry if you're the only one in the "room", others will join eventually,
and if the camera is pointed at the floor, just yell until someone comes and
talks to you and then ask them to aim it back up into the room)
see you soon!

sudoroom needs to pick a member to be the board member of the omni commons,
which is the organization that owns the building.
because of the way the omni commons is structured, its board is made up of
members of the member collectives.
we need someone (not me) to volunteer to fill this role, and that person's full
name will be recorded as a board member, and they will have to attend the board
meeting which might be boring. It is a legal requirement that the omni commons
board meets at least once per year.
We need to send someone for this right away since it's time to schedule the
meeting.
please volunteer.
