I just took out the trash/recycling/compost out of the Sudo Room. It
smelled really bad and there were too many flies, either food waste or
someone took a dump in the trash.
I wiped down Sudo Room tables to make the room hopefully smell better.
*Omni Commons trash/recycling/compost
<https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Trash>is taken out every Monday & Thursday
evening/night and picked up early Tuesday & Friday mornings. *
*If we can collectively follow this schedule, it will help out both Sudo
Room & Omni Commons overall.*
The annoying thing is that after taking out all the waste and trying to
make things cleaner & smell better, a* non-Sudo Room member *brought in
their own rotten trash & waste from *outside* Sudo Room into Sudo Room
trash for us to deal with overall.
Unfortunately, this is an ongoing issue though from this one person.

Hello,
Yar forwarded a message from Romy Ilano about discussing the November 5 rollerskating event. I'm the point person for that event, so I'm happy to discuss it. Is there an email I should use to discuss it privately, or will the sudoroom mailing list email suffice?
Best,

Hello Omni Collectives & Community!
Our gofundme campaign has raised $25,888 from 290 donors.
The fundraising working group is reaching out to each collective for a
little support! We want to boost the campaign while boosting each
collective within the Omni. We are asking each collective to offer a
special incentive. Something that feeds the curious donor collective wisdom
and appreciation.
Ideas on collective incentive can be workshops, new or reoccurring.
Example : Counter Culture Lab offers LAB 101 to donors who pledge $25 to
our gofundme.
Collective incentives can also be merch or vendor items. Or even discount
codes.
Example : Acta Non Verba offers 50% off fruit CSA beetbox to donors who
pledge $19.99 to our gofundme.
We want the items to be very unique to your collective. For folks who are
curious about Omnis collective of collectives. This participation will
support the fundraising working group and the collective as a whole!
Let me know if this is something your collective can participate in. We
hope everyone can get involved! We hope to receive collective incentives by
10/27/22.
We can support outreach and boost your collective with graphic designs
showcasing your collective offerings!
Abundance & Resilience,
Silver

It's just not our money. It belongs to Safer DIY and we've been holding onto
it. It's not much different from if we were to go out and steal it out of
their account because we happened to have access to it, in my opinion.
So as an individual, i'm in favor of paying it immediately. I'll put this
question on the Sudoroom meeting agenda so that I can get a proper
representative position from Sudoroom.
If the above argument is not enough to convince whoever is reading this, I'd
like to point out that Omni wouldn't exist right now if it weren't for the
significant contributions of Sarah and David, well above and beyond what this
actual loan pays for. Considering we have a fire inspection coming up, we
really would be better off if we had a better relationship with them and were
able to ask for help with it.

Hi Sudoroom,
THIS IS IMPORTANT!
The following proposal was brought to the delegate's meeting a couple of
weeks
ago, and tonight in the meeting it was discussed.
Since I had not been attending delegates meetings for some time, I failed to
forward this proposal to this list so that sudoroom could discuss our
position
on it.
Since I am a Sudoroom member, I voiced my position through our delegate
(which
is me) that I am against giving a committee the power to levy fines against
omni collectives/tenants/people, especially since we have not tried a
process
of simple communication between a cleaning collective and representatives of
collectives.
Ultimately the other Omni delegates felt strongly about passing the
proposal,
but they were willing to remove the provision giving the new Committee the
ability to "impose a monetary penalty" on groups or individuals they
determined
were guilty of being messy. The proposal was partially passed as seen here:
https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Event:2022/09/15_Delegates#cleanliness
yar: if we approve the proposal but delay the fine enforcement until after
our
october 6 meeting, and require another affirmative consensus decision
on
october 6 to give them that fine enforcement power?
jake: is ok with that
CONSENSUS: YES (CCL/Patrik ANV/Silver SUDOROOM/Jake FNB/Helen CLP/Billy
MOP/Jacqi)
ABSTAIN: (SUDOMESH/Camber)
BLOCK: (none), PASSES!
I personally think it's unreasonable to trust a newly formed Committee with
the power to, for example, determine that Sudoroom is too messy and issue
"fines" of $50 per day until they feel that we have satisfied their
standard,
and I'm glad that the other delegates were willing to remove this provision
even though they were technically capable of overriding sudoroom's
objections.
This provision is set to be reintroduced at the Delegate's meeting on
OCTOBER
6TH and Sudoroom needs to discuss our position, in order for our delegate to
represent us at that meeting.
Please see the link below for the proposed text of the new Committee (same
link
is in the meeting notes above) and discuss the provision that's slated for
October 6th Delegate's meeting.

At the delegate's meeting tonight, we discussed a proposal formulated by the
Events team which is linked above. This is a draft proposal and instructions
for how to suggest edits are on top of the doc. Please do not edit the
content
directly.
In short, it exists to create a new committee which will oversee the
cleanliness of the space, design and implement new systems to do so,
including
a monetary penalty for any space left out of order for both shared spaces
and
tenant spaces. If you're able to be an active and dedicated participant in
that
committee, please join us on Slack.
This committee would also be able to spend some amount of Omni funds to
clean
the space regularly and keep it at a level of cleanliness that must be
maintained for Omni to exist. Please check this out and get back with any
thoughts, concerns, suggestions before it's voted on at the next delegate's
meeting.

Come by Sudo Room tomorrow, *Sunday October 2nd from 2 - 6 PM* to build,
hack, or just hang out!
(Also, come see the difference after another big clean-up!)
If you have any questions or need help getting in, call my number below.
*Andrew R Gross, (he/him)*

last night (wednesday night) Kent and Eric and I worked for hours to clean up
and organize the space, and we cleared up the whole floor area in the southeast
corner near the telescreen.
Kent fixed a nice power supply and cleaned up the whole workbench that has the
microscopes on it, and we'll be adding more carwardine (anglepoise) lamps there.
we organized the sterilite bins on the shelves and after another round of that,
it will be time to decorate them with rainbow colors; I ordered $50 worth of
10 colors of 1" wide masking tape, and when we're done the wall will basically
be a rainbow of bins. If anything is out of place it will be pretty obvious.
we decided that the metal sliding chair assembly under the desk in the
southwest corner is just huge and taking up space, and should be scrapped. If
wants it please take it home, otherwise we'll get rid of it soon.
the next area to be cleaned up will be the "balcony" at the top of the stairs,
there's a lot of stuff there that needs to get put away and organized and
ewasted and i'll work on that with others, and then we can add lighting and
tables and outlets there and make it a nice place to hang out. When the cold
weather season comes, it will be nice for people to have a place to hang out
where the temperature is naturally higher.
anyway things are happening and the space is getting nicer. Eventually we'll
have everything off the floor and we'll be able to run a roomba full time
keeping the dust off, and Yar can finally epoxy the whole floor.
let me know if you want to help! Or just jump in and make things better.

At the next delegates' meeting we will discuss renting storage to a group for a
bunch of riot shields. Hopefully this means we can get a bit more money coming
in to Omni each month and put some space to use that's presently just full of
clutter.
If anyone has feelings about this proposal we should talk about it. I am the
sudoroom delegate so sudoroom should tell me how it feels about this.
And also about the Cleanliness Accountability Committee proposal!

Hi y'all,
I appreciate all the work and brainstorming we have provided to discuss providing space. I think it would be beneficial to discuss this at the next delegates meeting as it relates to providing space for rent. It would be good to hear from other collectives about this and see where we can provide the space.
Best,

I posted a bunch of our test equipment that we never use and never will use, on
craigslist for sale to benefit sudoroom.
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/ele/d/oakland-hewlett-packard-tektronix-la…
of course sudoroom members get first dibs but these things are only taking up
space and are still just barely valuable enough to be able to sell rather than
sadly simply scrap them.
they were once many thousands of dollars worth, but today most can be replaced
with a simple USB stick. There is no functionality lost in our hackerspace by
eliminating this equipment, we already have more modern hardware that works.

the other night someone introduced by Joule (sudoroom member) offered to give
Sudoroom $2000 per month if we provide space for their vacuum chamber and
related equipment.
We gave them our bank routing/account numbers and if the money appears, we
should make the space near the robot control cabinet available so it can be set
up. We will be able to use the equipment ourselves when they're not using it.
This is a great opportunity to access money that would otherwise go to waste,
and we can increase our monthy contribution to Omni while this is happening,
which will help us keep the building.

Hi Glen,
the 3D printer i pointed out to you is a TAZ 4 which was donated last year. As
I think i mentioned in the following wiki, it just needs the currents
calibrated for the stepper motor control on the extruder, which i think is
basically a software process on this machine.

Too wiped out for hardware hacking tonight but roller skaters actively talking to Omni about a Halloween ish event
I guess there’s a meeting Wednesday right ???

Hi Sudoroom,
THIS IS IMPORTANT!
The following proposal was brought to the delegate's meeting a couple of weeks
ago, and tonight in the meeting it was discussed.
Since I had not been attending delegates meetings for some time, I failed to
forward this proposal to this list so that sudoroom could discuss our position
on it.
Since I am a Sudoroom member, I voiced my position through our delegate (which
is me) that I am against giving a committee the power to levy fines against
omni collectives/tenants/people, especially since we have not tried a process
of simple communication between a cleaning collective and representatives of
collectives.
Ultimately the other Omni delegates felt strongly about passing the proposal,
but they were willing to remove the provision giving the new Committee the
ability to "impose a monetary penalty" on groups or individuals they determined
were guilty of being messy. The proposal was partially passed as seen here:
https://omnicommons.org/wiki/Event:2022/09/15_Delegates#cleanliness
yar: if we approve the proposal but delay the fine enforcement until after our
october 6 meeting, and require another affirmative consensus decision on
october 6 to give them that fine enforcement power?
jake: is ok with that
CONSENSUS: YES (CCL/Patrik ANV/Silver SUDOROOM/Jake FNB/Helen CLP/Billy MOP/Jacqi)
ABSTAIN: (SUDOMESH/Camber)
BLOCK: (none), PASSES!
I personally think it's unreasonable to trust a newly formed Committee with
the power to, for example, determine that Sudoroom is too messy and issue
"fines" of $50 per day until they feel that we have satisfied their standard,
and I'm glad that the other delegates were willing to remove this provision
even though they were technically capable of overriding sudoroom's objections.
This provision is set to be reintroduced at the Delegate's meeting on OCTOBER
6TH and Sudoroom needs to discuss our position, in order for our delegate to
represent us at that meeting.
Please see the link below for the proposed text of the new Committee (same link
is in the meeting notes above) and discuss the provision that's slated for
October 6th Delegate's meeting.

Subject: [omni-consensus] Cleanliness Accountability Committee proposal
https://cryptpad.fr/pad/#/2/pad/edit/GcTDiTZqA3ao5+6hbaAuobdc/
At the delegate's meeting tonight, we discussed a proposal formulated by the
Events team which is linked above. This is a draft proposal and instructions
for how to suggest edits are on top of the doc. Please do not edit the content
directly.
In short, it exists to create a new committee which will oversee the
cleanliness of the space, design and implement new systems to do so, including
a monetary penalty for any space left out of order for both shared spaces and
tenant spaces. If you're able to be an active and dedicated participant in that
committee, please join us on Slack.
This committee would also be able to spend some amount of Omni funds to clean
the space regularly and keep it at a level of cleanliness that must be
maintained for Omni to exist. Please check this out and get back with any
thoughts, concerns, suggestions before it's voted on at the next delegate's
meeting.

These two projects aren’t related. But I want to check a check engine light
and paint a figurine. Does Sudo room have a compressor? I thought about
getting an airbrush. They’re not expensive. But I don’t want to deal with
getting a compressor for my house when I won’t use it that much. --

I have an OBD reader in my car. If you¹re there on Tues nights, we can
check the codes. Or as Jake said, you can also pick one up pretty cheap.
What type of paint will you want to spray through an airbrush? I¹ve used a
compressed cylinder of CO2 as it¹s quiet and provides a dry gas source for
an airbrush.

Hi there, does anyone know who to contact about using the event space
for an event? I have a friend who just asked me, but I’m not sure where
to direct her request.
(Max)
I'm building a video intercom to let people at Omni's front door ring
whatever collective they want. It's just a screen with four buttons
underneath for scrolling and selecting, and if they select Sudo Room it'll
initiate a video connection with the internal video conference system.
I can set it up to send a message on Slack to a designated channel or an
email, or some other notification if other collectives want. The problem is
that I'm using a personal Raspberry Pi that I use regularly as a 3D printer
server. My intention was to use this one during development and order a
dedicated one, but I really didn't appreciate how scarce Raspberry Pis are.
Does anyone have one? If I had a preference, my first choice would be a
Raspberry pi 3 A. But I think I could make do with whatever someone might
have available.

I'm guessing someone brought them here thinking they would be useful but I
don't see how that would be the case, so hopefully whoever brought them can
take them away, unless they think sudoroom needs them for some reason and they
will supply the light fixtures for them

Hey so I did what I was instructed to some months ago, I donated to Omni
commons because my employer can match donations and that's only possible to
Omni commons because they are an an official non-profit. I sent an email to
finance(a)omnicommons.org and say "I want this to go towards
sudoroom", but I haven't received any answer, can anyone confirm if that
worked? That's for August and September.

I have a fun riddle (it's actually a computer problem please help).
As of this evening, I think my toddler did something to my computer, and
now I'm experiencing the following:
-
All windows that have a left-right scroll bar scroll to the right
continuously whenever the mouse is over the field (even if another window
is active)
-
This usually only occurs if the mouse is stationary. If it’s moving
at all, it doesn’t happen.
-
The effect occurs in Google Spreadsheets in Firefox and Chrome, in a
file browser and Libre Office Spreadsheet.
-
The effect occurs regardless of mouse motion in Firefox.
-
If I hover over the tabs in firefox it shifts over to the next tab to
the right until it gets to the right-most place
-
The effect doesn’t occur if the mouse is moving
-
It doesn’t occur in Firefox
- It moves at about 2-3 tabs per second
-
If I press “ctrl” in Firefox the browser zooms out.
-
The effect doesn’t occur in Chrome
-
I can’t drag windows. The cursor turns into a hand, but then turns back
into a cursor within a fraction of a second. Sometimes I can move the page
in little steps before it happens.
-
I can’t resize windows. The cursor changes into a drag emblem, and it
doesn’t change back, but moving the page does nothing.
-
I can still drag objects on the desktop.
- I can still click and drag to highlight things. The effect appears
specific to window manipulation
- If I hover over a dropdown in the Linux settings settings menus, it
scrolls.
I tried switching mouses and keyboards, so it doesn't appear to be a
hardware issue. I think it's some kind of weird mobility or accessibility
feature, or maybe two interacting in a weird way. I'm using Linux Mint.
Can anyone figure out what the hell is going on and how to fix it?

We have been waiting for a sensing system to be programmed for security in
CCL and sudo room.
Meanwhile, there have been incidents in and around the Omni that raise
security concerns.
Starting in August we will start closing and locking the entry door.
If someone is having a workshop and wants to keep an open door for the
duration, that's cool, prop it open.
When you exit the area please close the door and check that it locked.
Here's how to unlock the door:
1. check to see no one is watching you
2. press the lever/switch on the box to the left of the door
(see photo) while saying "open sesame"
3. push open the door and enter.
to lock the door, just close it.
The door also opens from inside.
This message is coming to you via Sudo-discuss or CCL members at google
groups. Please pass it on to anyone who needs to know the procedure.
Ok, just checked the roof drains - look fine - and swept the roof of
anything that might clog them. Very few leaves so far, but if this rain
storm comes with high winds, it may be good to have someone check tomorrow
as well.
Don't have time to do any spot-patching up on the roof - anyone know where
those materials are, and which ones we should be using right now that have
a short dry time?
Currently splitting open some large trash bags I brought in, to cover some
of the remaining valuables...

hardware/software brain replacement for old HPLC UV/vis spectrometers:
https://gitlab.com/juul/spectrometer-resurrector
If you have any interest in this project, come hang out and chat/hack with

This project can especially benefit from the help of anyone with interest
or experience in microbiology, spectrometry, microcontroller programming,
web development or digital/analog electronics, but of course everyone is
welcome to join in regardless of experience or skill level!
Last Tuesday we investigated the power source for the deuterium arc lamp
and schemed on a design for an open hardware replacement. Special thanks to

Subject: [omni-consensus] Hiring Christina Oatfield to resolve property taxes
I would like us to hire a local lawyer named Christina Oatfield
(https://www.christinaoatfield.com/) to represent Omni Commons as we
navigate our welfare exemption application with the county assessor's
office, to resolve the issue of our outstanding property taxes.
This is a huge existential problem. If we don't get it resolved, there
is no way we will ever get a loan, or keep the building.
She has extensive local experience in exactly this area, charges
$225/hour, and would ask us to sign the fee agreement at
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bffzLFT7Rd-rKe6vaVi3qvXph3_zhRCX
Her work would focus just on the welfare exemption. She would not
replace Jesse Palmer as a general lawyer, or Sarah Lockhart as our
2021 tax preparer, or do any other legal or tax-related work.
How do folks feel about this? Do we need to wait another 3 (!) weeks
to approve this? Personally I feel like it has been brought up enough
times at delegates meetings that we shouldn't need to wait that long.
But I would like a couple other opinions on that.

I think the main priority for the upcoming rain storm is to verify that the
roof drain is free of any leaves, and that the mesh cage that is supposed
to keep debris out is properly installed over the drain opening. That was
the problem with our major leaks last time: the mesh cage had been
dislodged, leaves and trash blocked the drain, and we wound up with a foot
of water on the roof, which likely overtopped the vents underneath the
skylights.
We should also put tarps over our most valuable equipment just in case -
especially the bioreactor, HPLC, UV spec, and plate reader.
If anybody has time to do some work on the roof today, we can also try to
close some of the gaps in the roof coating itself, but we would likely need
to use the fast-drying black tar-like stuff that dries fast, rather than
the more environmentally friendly latex based coating that takes a day or
two to dry.
Ideally we should have done that *before* the rains hit, but I think we
were a bit caught off-guard with this unusually early rain storm.
The skylight seals in my estimate are of secondary importance compared to
the leaks in the roof coating. They still have the same seal they were
installed with ~8-9 years ago. It is definitely worth re-sealing them, but
I think we were getting far more water coming through roof leaks than
leaking around the panes of the skylights.

Okay, I was checking because in the past Cam Life has canceled events and spots have opened up, for example September 10th, so you never know, events do fall through, which is understandable.
Yes, let’s check in with them and make sure they have the right idea of where we are 3 days is a lot, if they’d be willing to shorten it or start earlier in the week to have their 3 days that would work too.

Hey Sudoers!
Tonight, in lieu of a formal meeting we're going to be tricking out bikes
with LEDs. If you've got Sudo Room business to discuss, drop in in person
or in the video screen. We'll be tricking out bikes, starting at 5.
Event details:
*WHAT*: Sudoroom’s Bike Mutation Station - Light Up Your Ride
*WHEN*; Weds Sep 7 2022 from 5PM-11PM
*WHERE*: Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland, CA 94609
*HOW*: Bring your bike and any parts / lights you may already have.
COST: Free, although donations to the Omni Commons gofundme are gladly
accepted: https://www.gofundme.com/f/save-the-omni
Wanna trick out your bike with LED lights for the Friday Sept. 9 ride?
Sudoroom Hackerspace (at Omni Commons) is having an LED lighting workshop in
time for the next Bike Party!
Bring your bike, your curiosity and your enthusiasm to Omni Common’s Bike
Mutation Station, and we’ll help you get your bike lighting super snazzy for
the ride: we’ve got helpers, workspace, soldering and hot glue, and surplus
LED
tape and strings that we can help help you attach to your bike.
If you’re got spare LED light strings or tape, even broken ones or
“scraps”, or
even just simple bike safety lights you want to fix or install, bring them
to
the event to use or to share!
This is a family-friendly activity, biking families are heartily invited.
our goal for this event is to pull lots more people into the Omni and
sudoroom
to grow our community! and we're going to have to put in a bunch of work to
make it happen but i think it will be fun

Subject: [sudo-info] Hackathon Venue
Hello Sudo Room Team
My name is Vidit Jain, and I am currently a high school senior. Me and my
team are organizing a hackathon called Unite Hacks in San Francisco,
California, and we are partnered with Hack Club <https://hackclub.com/>.
Our team consists of 6 brilliant individuals out of whom 4 are seniors at
high school and the other two are in college. We have organized some
virtual hackathons, such as Vivid Hacks <https://www.vividhacks.tech/>, and
participated in numerous hackathons, such as Assemble
<https://assemble.hackclub.com/launch>, which was also hosted by Hack Club.
However, this fall, we are inspired to host an in-person event.
Unite Hacks will bring together 60-100 high school hackers from around the
globe for a three-day mystical hackathon in San Francisco. Our goal is to
introduce students of ages 14-19 to a wide range of possibilities to create
something larger for their community with tech and code. Our 48-hour
in-person hackathon will connect students from across the world to utilize
technology and code (Of all kinds!) to create, innovate, and turn their
visions into a reality! Our projected date for the event is October 21 and
it’s expected to run for 3 days (10/21 - 10/23).
Unite Hacks needs a home in San Francisco and we were wondering if Sudo
Room could host us for a weekend (Friday 6:00 pm to 12:30 pm on Sunday) on
October 21.
We are also open for a 2 day event if that is something which can be made
possible.
We’d love the opportunity to connect and answer any questions that you may
have either through email or a call (phone or zoom). We believe that
sponsoring our event will be mutually beneficial and will not only give you
the opportunity to help us meet our goal of furthering learning, but also
to help students build impactful solutions.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out and we'd be more
than happy to clear any doubts!
