I got a lot of help from sudoroom members with the light projection mapping
ideas. Also from Noisebridge!
So far a lot of stuff online is people using really nice larger projectors,
and there's a lot of great sophistication with mapping beforehand,
especially in Blender, etc.
But after chatting with folks, I'm taking the route first with small
handheld laser projectors that hook up easily to smartphones and tablets or
can take SD cards.
The small projectors have been a good choice to get people excited. It's a
lot more spontaneous. THere's just something about hooking up a laptop to a
huge projector, being stuck at the back of room etc., but with the hand
held projectors I can go anywhere and manipulate the images manually
without having to make fancy graphics and videos
- Marc discussed mounting the projectors onto bicycles - both projectors
have mounts or have threaded quarter inch? inserts common to cameras, and
I'm fairly confident I can put them on my goPro style mounts with some
work. Aiming maybe for the next East Bay Bike Party which is March 11
(Friday night) - oh ya marc I still have your camera mount on wood for the
stand will bring it back Sunday or Tuesday is that OK!
- Carl G from SudoRoom has some projects he made for pixel art - we
projected onto the movable walls in the sudoroom ballroom. Since it was so
dark we were able to get a decent size (the walls) and there was a lot of
energy and excitement!

Even nicer, I have been trying to get my regular cartoonist drawing group
that meets wednesdays to get involved and even hang out at SudoRoom and
omnicommons. They're just very clever and focus a lot on animation and
cartoons! I finanlly got the projector working and was projecting Brian
Kolm's crazy cat onto the wall, a bowl and on a spinning lazy susan.

A lot of people are really into Hayao Miyazaki and theme park rides. I mean
we aren't going to attempt this yet without asking, but what is the next
step from immersive light projection rooms in the Omni Commons Ballroom?
Imagine a guided ride in a wheeled cart right? wouldn't that be super fun?

Reopening
After some quieter months, Sudo's getting more active. Reopening isn't

Clean-up

Thinking about projects in micro mobility and change management for Americans. How do we get people who drive cars to walk as much as people who take subways? Make safer biking paths? Remove easy parking and encourage car drivers to park and walk or take a bike share

I can't always drop by the meetings (they conflict with my drawing group

not very original, but just condense the discussion into a big drawing of
what we're doing and what we're aspiring to. I think even if it sounds
corny or almost like a powerpoint even the administrative stuff like
cleaning and management can be fun.
Oh here's a blast from the past - anthony repetto was a mathematician guy
who hung out at SudoROom, I remember he drew a big math formula on the
sidewalk near SudoROom and we photographed it.

I got this idea to do light projection mappings. There's a lot of inspiring
stuff out there, and the last few weeks I've been at SudoRoom there's just
a lot of work around trying to figure out what equipment to get, what
creative ideas to get. It's been really fun.
I thought I'd share some sketches from my notebooks, because I'm just doing
lots of planning right now and bouncing ideas.
- * Starting small - There are a lot of possibilities but it's really
good to start small. I chatted with Marc + others about using portable pico
projectors to mount on bicycles for the bike party rides and at cosplay
events. Someone even mentioned having a projector in a wand!
- so many opportunities to craft a cool mount
- Making more of an effort to "cross fertilize" with the cool artists
that are still in Oakland. For example I was at the Drink and Draw at the
New Parkway (unfortunately happens on wednesday night meetings for me) and
ran into folks from the Rock Paper Scissors Collective (they're back) and a
lot of cartoonists! I wish I had gotten more of their art (i'll get it)
- For interacting with other artists, it'd probably fun to build a small
"Stage" with foamboard similar to what you see at science fair projects.
Came up with the idea for a small puppet theater
- Eventually would love to move to immersive environments (an entire
room). people love taking selfies in these places
I'd like to move to Blender eventually and make very sophisticated
experiments but it's good to do stuff off the wall and freehand using very
old projectors or my hand held pico projectors.
There are a lot of cool video and visual artists who have experimented with
light projections going way back into the 1970s and 1990s even, and while
the technology is important (man so many different cable formats to review
this month) it's really about what's presented and what you're trying to
get across. I'd like to do very technology-obvious projects but have been
making a point to look at indonesian and japanese puppetry as well.
As we jam we can involve more and more projectors and do really elaborate
things. It's just a matter of time and learning blender. I think it'd be
good to poopulate with the sudoroom blog wit the creative process as we
aren't just our stuff and classes, but also a creative space to highlight
the process of making something cool.
So this notebook will be part of it!
OK enough random thoughts. Maybe we can have our version of 5 minutes of
fame and do a show and tell!

Over the years I have removed 30 contractor bags of electronic waste from sudo room.
Sudo is now once again full, with every table obscured by it.
I’ve tried to say that electronics donations are great, as long as we have intention for what to do with them, a place for the stuff we want, and a process for immediately getting rid of what we don’t want. But, this is not what we are experiencing.
I’m no longer strong enough to keep cleaning up, and some of the e-waste that shows up is genuinely dangerous, like a UV laser that appears to have given me vascular tumors.
Appear benign, but, punching a hole in my genome has really kicked my survival instinct into high gear and I don’t want anything to do with e waste anymore.
We need a new plan…

Hey all,
I want to make JS Thursdays a thing again for Sudoroom. Could folks help me
to get the word out and/or help me run it? I figure I'll go to the space
each Thurs evening and be available virtually for people who can't be there
in person. The intention of this will be to help people who are learning
JavaScript or working on some JS project that they'd like help with. If
anyone has tips or can assist in any way I'd appreciate it!

I have been serving as sudoroom's "delegate" to the Omni Commons delegate's
meetings which happen on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

since Sudoroom meetings have been sparsely attended and informal, I have had to
represent our position on issues in an ad-hoc way based on what I thought we
would want if we had discussed things as a collective. This is not the way it
should be, but Omni needs to keep functioning even though Sudoroom is not
running at full speed yet.
If you are part of sudoroom, please come to meetings, and help spread the word
before meetings, so that more people show up. Meetings will need a facilitator
at least, and someone will have to take notes onto the wiki. If you want a

Last night we had new people visiting, a surprise visit from folks who
haven't been around in a long time _and_ a bunch of great donations of all
kinds of components, microcontrollers and random useful bits (that have
mostly been sorted into bins).

OK I'm just starting the inkling of doing cool stuff with light
projections. Got tons of assistance from Ian with a stronger projector - I
actually just enjoyed pointing the projector manually versus making
something overly involved in Blender (Blender is not very intuitive and I
think even when i know all the keystrokes it would be hard to have the same
spirit)

OK so I'm thinking about this projection mapping project, where I project
cartoons and other art from a portable projector onto 3D models / forms /
mannequins.

We have very good quality (relatively) visual projectors at both
Noisebridge and Sudoroom
However, I'm wondering if I should invest in a cheapie projector because
that would give me more mobility. Then I could projection map at
skateparks, he omni commons, and have more than one projector projecting
around a large room.
This wouldn't be quite the equipment I need to recreate something as crazy
as the Van Gogh limestone exhibits in France (there's one in SF right now
too) but something truly fun would be a lot of little projectors!
What are some good starting off points and open source projects around

Any tips for portable tool storage?
I just started working in field engineering for lab equipment, and I'm
trying to pick out the most functional (and coolest) tools organization.
I know one guy with a big bike-bag full of smaller loose tool bags, and one
guy with a soft toolbox. I'm thinking I'd like a tool backpack, or possibly
some tool rolls.
My tool kit isn't going to need to be super extensive: a bunch of allen
wrenches and screw drivers, some pliers and snips, a little bottle of
machine oil and a brush, etc.. But I'd like to have some room to expand. It
would also be cool to have some modularity. Again, the tool set is basic
electronics servicing stuff.
What do you guys think? Again, I want something light and practical, but
I'm definitely considering cool-factor too.

Rick aka 'Glass on Wheels' who originally installed the CCL/Sudo skylights
will be coming by Friday morning to assess leaks in these skylights.
The work will be limited to walking on the roof and visual inspection, so
there should be no disruption to CCL or Sudo's operations during this
task.
I will ask Rick to focus on assessing leaks that are coming through the
panes, as opposed to leaks sourced from the outer perimeter of the
skylights (which should have already been recently addressed by the roofer,
mike).
- It might be helpful to know the kind of paint CCL washed the outside of
the skylight windows with (some time ago), if someone recollects that..?
- It might be helpful for someone from CCL / Sudo to be on-hand to discuss
specific leak areas, in the event I don't remember them all.

I am on my way to mentor a fabulous talented sweet artist at 5 this evening with her peices and will receive anyone as they are with their lasering skills from 6pm till at least 10pm as needed by the community. A few other people might show up. Im flexible to mentor any project on plain thin 1/8 in birchwood, up to 1/4 in mdf, cardboard and sometimes 1/4 in plywood or 1/4 in acrylic(maybe thicker sometime but its too stinky!)
If you are new or recently back to lasering please do read the wall of text about the needs for care and safety and preparation and materials selection that I posted in volume 111 issue 17.

About the fume extractor, we have a fan ventilation system, but someone was kind enough to widen the angle that it gets to the roof and now it seems almost 50% as stinky as before. We need help with an engineering problem of proper width and second fan specs. I thought I could get to NB to ask the geeks there but its no longer as easy to get to. David gave me a bunch of specs that yeah I cant remember. I am better at communicating these things, can someone with an engineering or physics background step in to help us?

When I was last at SudoRoom I was more into skateboarding but now it’s surfing and snowboarding 😸 I broke my ankle skating and ended up trying to do a 3D Print-out of my ankle cat scan. It wasn’t successful but that’s once if my favorite attempts there
I hate being frozen a t a computer but it’s necessary for flow state . Is there a way to weave the outside with the inside or is that even desirable ? I was on some 6 hour bike rides the past few months and wanted to draw or reflect in nature not necessarily at a computer desk - no internet but it would be nice to do programming on top of a remote mountain away from noise and ads

Thinking about projectors and doing art projects with cartoonists I know. I guess I’ll chat with Jake because we have 3D projectors ? There’s old art projects with projected art featuring “mixed reality “
It’d be cool to do that in SudoRoom! Or noisebridge . There are a lot of cheesy Instagram friendly museum of ice cream type immersive environments itd be fun to do something more artsy or electronics focused

I guess I’d like to make big cardboard figures eventually (will have to glue them to cardboard backing and stand up)

Hello Sudoers
I am happy to announce that I finally came full circle with my laser skills to be able to offer mentorship to Sudo Roomers.
I have been for several months taking my lasering from user on one machine to understanding multiple and some over-all skills, drilling down to what we have in our blessed upgraded "Chinese Red and Black" (!)(no really that is the open shared handle/keywords).
We have access to an amazing machine that just so happens to be one of the more common and reliable "off brand" (ie knock off of possibly "OmTech") machines), so sorta kinda open source (limited documentation). It has been upgraded I think to 100wso is actually more powerful that it was originally. It currently works fairly well.
After many hours and tears I discovered and rectified the Red and Black's cracked lense and mirror alignment issues that contributed to its past lack of power. (Always a work in progress)
I have been working with machine for about 2 months now wanting to share its baddass-ness, but needing to maintain and learn about the Queen.
I had been having trouble engraving to make it look better than a blasted out version or any pic. I am not able to generate a photographic quality engraving, but I am now finally able to make a metaphor of the original and also success with cutting 1/8 birchwood, 1/4 in MDF, acrylic, and 1/4 in plywood with many passes, I am now ready to share my findings with the community and give various versions of a "laser training" to Sudo.
For this training we will only be cutting 1/8 Birchwood or 1/4 MDF. In the future we can work with Acrylic or late if everyone else has gone home (stinky!).
We will focus on introduction to laser cutting safety, generating viable files, and specs to work with various materials.
I have worked for months and months now to get to this point so please understand coming into this how valuable this moment is to have access to such a powerful machine. Please try to come to at least 3 of these mentorships and expect to watch some videos and/or read some material before being confident lasering. There are so many ways to not do the appropriate thing for the cutter. It is important to know exactly why you are choosing what settings you do. It is imortant to maintain high awareness as you proceed from design to cutting. A wrong move could scorch the mirrors, the lense, ruin your art, or start a small fire (which could ruin the machine). Improper use can also cause undo air quality issues that also could be avoided (no vinyl ever!!!)
It is with all these things in mind and great respect for the tool and the community that training and constant awareness is needed by community members with every cut.
I am now able to teach a comprehensive beginner level training. I will do it in "Mentor style" at first, taking in the skill levels of whoever shows up, possibly culminating in a joint class with a professional.
Keep in mind even "simple cuts" can take much editing to be ready, and can take much time to cut. I can only teach from practical short example files to start, and report back from longer more ornate projects that I have finished.
With this in mind, if you expect to cut something on a non-acrylic focused Laser Lunes, please bring your own 1/8 in Birchwood slab from Blick for ~$6.00 for a 12/24 in sheet or 1/4 in MDF from McFee's lumber. I must prioritize these materials for the first few classes, as other materials take 2-5x more cut passes and may stink quite a bit more.
I will select simple SVG files from the community to cut in the mentorship, and can advise on improving your vector files (Inskape!)

I do think it would be great if we had a sudoroom-sponsored event in the
ballroom on National Organ Day (not that I believe in Nations) where people
come in and play the organs and pianos for each other in the ballroom.
It can be a practice / lead-up session for International Organ Day/Week in
April, when we can have a more formal event with rollerskates and inlines.
I can think of a few people who i'd like to hear play.
