upstairs laser printer

I wanted to print something tonight and went to the web interface for the laser printer: http://192.168.42.2:8888/ (it only works if you're in the Omni) and when I tried to print it didn't work. Why? Because someone stole the ethernet cable that had been connecting the printer to the network! Why would you do that? don't do that. It took me a long time but i found a replacement cable of the right length, and i put it back up there, and then i was able to print. if you want to print, go to the above address. If you just want to check in on the printer (and make sure its ethernet cable isn't unplugged) you can go to: http://100.64.64.88/ thank you -jake P.S. are there any more working 8-foot-long fluorescent lightbulbs in omni? one of the ones in the northeast corner of sudoroom has stopped working (the west one) and the whole fixture is dark now. of course we should migrate to another type of light in the future, but i think we should use up all the fluorescent lights before we do that.

Pursuance is building a global federation of activist groups

As many of you know, at my Saturday hackathons at Noisebridge I've been working with @clairep and others on Pursuance -- *open source, self-hostable, end-to-end encrypted task management software* to amplify the efforts of activists, journalists, and nonprofits. Pursuance was started by formerly-imprisoned journalist and activist Barrett Brown, who went to jail for his crowdsourced journalism investigations into Palantir and others (see https://www.thenation.com/arti cle/strange-case-barrett-brown/ ) based on his going through of hacked emails that had been dumped onto the internet, and we're building Pursuance so people can more effectively and securely coordinate these kinds of actions online as part of *a global federation of activist groups opposing injustice*. And as my 5MoF talk a couple weeks ago mentioned, we just started a Kickstarter to fund the completion of the first major version that we're building (I'm the architect and lead dev)! *We just reached our initial goal of $48k(!)*, and there's some awesome stretch goals I'd love to get to as well. It was the project that should have never worked: an artist supporting artists by sharing below market rent. Yet the 25 year run of people, events, exhibits are a testament to art over commerce. need 12 identicalish 5v variable power supplies

has anyone seen a stack of 12 or more identical 5v power supplies? like variable-output metal-chassis style, in the range of 50 to 250 watts? i thought there were a bunch of them at noisebridge but it's kindof far for me to go look. I need them for testing these 12-series LiFePo battery banks. i should mention that i will be using them at 3.6v not 5v, but i think 5v supplies are appropriate and i will be able to fudge them down to 3.6 or so. thank you -jake

West Oakland is more than a collection of buildings. We are fighting to save history. Head straight south on Market and you wind up in the Lower Bottom, OneFam’s neighborhood. A place that is not only steeped in Black Panther Party history, and Black history going back a century, but remains a predominantly Black neighborhood that currently experiences a great need for many of the things that BPP fought for in the ‘60s. OneFam started years ago with Bikes 4 Life. It has since grown to include other spaces on the property: the 7th Street Revolution Cafe, a performance and meeting space, and an outdoor events space where the historic Lincoln Theater once stood. These locations host a wide range of community gatherings, including music events such as weekly open mics and blues nights. OneFam also has roots in the Oscar Grant movement and many meetings happened in OneFam spaces. The displacement of Black and Brown residents and businesses by more affluent white residents is now the norm everywhere, including the once vibrant 7th Street. OneFam is the last pre-gentrification business, affectionately deemed “the last one standing” by some long-term West Oaklanders. For over six months, OneFam has responded to hostility from the landlord, who returned as the sole owner of the property after not being around for years. Absence left OneFam and the other tenants to deal with repairs, increasing cost of utilities and other results of neglect by themselves. Now OneFam is being wrongfully evicted. OneFam is an amazing organization that has been a part of this community but also has plans for the future. The goals of OneFam are as follows: - Inspire community members to take part in politics by building a social justice movement with a diverse mix of artists and activists - Raise the consciousness of young people and turn them into local leaders by creating a space for education and awareness about the issues of their community. We know that working together, we can push back against displacement and ensure that OneFam is not just the “last one standing” but instead a victory on 7th Street. Hopefully the first of many. Ravers Ambitions, New Sudoroom Collaborative Project

Hello Sudoroom Community, About two months ago Ravers Ambitions was created for the sole purposes of 1. Community Building 2. Education Through Collaboration (ETC). Rave stands for Radical Audio Visual Experience; which involves many artistic, technical, disciplinary, and organizational elements. Learning these skills alone could potentially be very difficult as an individual and extremely time consuming. However that time is shortened when people come together to share skills in a community/collaborative environment. And the diversity of skills acquired are much richer when engaged with members from different backgrounds, with different skill sets. We've had our first general meet up to make introductions, and plan around the purpose of this collaboration. We then had an informal (5 person) lesson, on the Introduction to DJing. During these workshops, regular contributors came as far from Marin, and San Jose, to provide expensive, professional grade equipment, for the five hour meetups alone. There also have been Sudoroom Members Omni Community regulars, whom participated. There quite a few elements that are emulated from Hackerspace Ethos, with as well. Nobody is in charge. Are transparent. Operate by consensus. Learning, workshops, tutoring or mentoring sessions, happen because people make them happen. Ravers Ambitions is the community that supports that. We still are new and planning workshops such as: 1) Technical Equipment (audio, lighting, video, etc) Setup, Maintenance, and Breaking down. 2) Dancing: An Introduction to Movement With Sound 3) Basics of DJing, 4) Visual Arts (LEDs, lazor display, video mapping, painting, etc), and more. In addition I wish this project to be discussed at the next Sudoroom meeting and be brought up for consensus as an official Sudoroom project.This is so that if there is questions, comments, or concerns, they can be expressed. Tonight, the Omni consensed on Art Bison Design Coop's move to the basement and transition to becoming a community screenprinting studio! Perhaps an ABDC member could speak to what that might entail for the basement and what would be needed wrt renovations/improvements? WG Members Attendees of our first meeting on May 11th were: Anka (LibLens/FNB), Ken (CCL), Robb (Sudo/LibLens), Jenny (Sudo), Laura, Sierk (Sudo), and Phil (FNB). Interested potential members include Kazoo (ABDC), Marcus (ABDC), Vienna (ABDC), Sara (ABDC), Julian (BAPS), Abe, Gerald (LibLens/FNB), and Rayc (Sudo) Media Lab Structure Governance The Media Lab Working Group will be modeled on the structure of the Commons Working Group. Members will receive formal training that will: familiarize them with Omni and Medial Lab policies and procedures; provide them with the skills to maintain Media Lab equipment, and supervise others’ use of the equipment; prepare them to share in management of incoming requests for Media Lab usage. The WG will collectively develop the policies and procedures with final approval by the Delegates, and maintain and manage the Lab. This will include maintaining financial records in collaboration with the Finance WG and making regular reports to the Board. Operations Supplies and equipment will be labeled with suggested donation for use. Donations will go toward supplies and machine maintenance (estimated at approximately $200-500/month, depending on amount of use). Individual WG members may contract with outside groups to fill orders for a fee (as with our AV techs) with approval of the WG. Over time, we expect the medialab to become capable of regular contributions to the Omni as a whole for space and utilities usage, and propose a check in approximately 6 months after move-in (June 1st, with check in on Dec. 1st). Users who are not part of the Media Lab WG will need to make an appointment to use the equipment or come during regular open hours, which are yet to be determined. This is to help ensure that equipment is not damaged and supply use is monitored. When not in use, supplies and equipment will be either stored in a locked cabinet or secured in place. If possible, electronics will require some kind of electronic code to function. The best way to do this is under discussion. We will submit a second proposal after build-out is complete to formalize the process for how collectives, members, and eventually outside folks will access. Intended Users Intended users of the Omni Media Lab include, by priority: 1. Omni Media Lab Working Group members (free) 2. Omni Member Collectives and collective members (free some set # of times / year, sliding scale donation) 3. Aligned community groups and organizations (by sliding-scale donation, or negotiated rate) 4. Public Service Announcement: I (ROBERT ALBERT YOUNG CHU) doesn't do Heroin!

Hello Omni Community at large, I would like to inform you all that I actually don't do Heroin (Hooray),as it is stated in the bathroom stall walls (closest to CCL and Sudoroom). I can tell you this though... That writing appeared the same day flew out. In addition I also saw him sneak into through the back door that day as well and didn't stop him because I had to get to a job. Since I didn't see him write on the stall myself, I can only rule out that it would be a possibility that he would do such a thing as to spread a rumor about me doing heroin. I didn't see the guy do it, and only think of it as a possibility because it would fall under a similar pattern of behavior of spreading rumors that he is known for about people within communities they are a part of. I find this kind of ironic as well as another Sudoroom member blew up at me and accused me of getting him kicked out, when I didn't even want him to be banned. I even tried mediating with him to prevent it. Life is ironic. Anyway I am glad people have noticed "Rob does Heroin" as well. I have been to busy to care about such foolishness, which is why I haven't done anything about it. Such as running my own appliance repair business, and hacking the planet. I also just wanted to let everybody know I drink alcohol once in a while, but defiantly don't do heroin or other drugs. I don't even smoke marijuana.
