Thanks to Will we now have a backup connection active!
The ISP service person could not solve the problem and will come back
tomorrow to continue his attempt.

We spent some time troubleshooting today and we had to conclude that the
problem is not with any of our gear or wiring. Either the new modem is also
not working or the wiring is messed up outside of Omni (possibly the fault
of the construction across the street) or the equipment at AT&T / LMI (our
ISP) is messed up.
This will likely take days to fix so we are trying to arrange for a backup
internet connection tomorrow. We will likely have some form of internet
tomorrow evening.
Technical details:
The new modem lit up one of its two DSL connection lights, meaning that one
of the two phone lines connected. It then lit up its Internet light which I
believe means that it has an IP layer link to something at the other end.
Connecting directly to the modem gives an IP via DHCP and I can ping the
modem, but trying to reach the outside world fails. traceroute fails with
the statically assigned external IP of the modem (which is stored in the
modem's flash memory). LMI did not give us the admin password to the modem
(grrr) and don't have 24/7 support. We attempted a factory reset, which
reset _something_ since it lost memory of its external IP and the Internet
light stopped coming on, but did not reset the admin password to the
factory default (at least as specified in the manual). After an attempted
factory reset again only one of the DSL lights came on. We then went to the
box where the phone lines come into our building (in the phat beats room)
and tied in a new, short, connection directly to the box and connected the
modem. Again the same behaviour: Only the DSL1 line lit up.
As I write this email I'm realizing that since I didn't disconnect the
existing phone cables running from the phone-line connection box in the
phat beats room and to the server room, if that cable has been half-chewed
over by critters then it might be creating a short which wouldn't be
remedied by simply adding a new connection on top :/
I'll do another test where I untie the existing connection first. Assuming
it still fails I will call our ISP tomorrow.
Will from the mesh group should have an unlimited 4G modem waiting for him
in his PO box which he will lend to Omni after he comes home from work
tomorrow and we will hook it up so we can have some amount of internet
until it's all sorted out.

I can't physically be there but seeing complains that the internet is
down at Omni. I can't remotely access any machines there. Is anybody
able to go check? Thanks.
Hey sudo,
Up for omni consensus, a proposal to lock the Classroom (the room between
the entrance hall and the ballroom along shattuck) up for consenso at the
next delegates meeting on May 3rd.
I am wary to say yes as GCEA is currently 5 months behind on rent ($250/mo)
and part of the rationale was that "every other collective has locked
rooms". Also, i have not seen any attempt made to store project items in a
locked cabinet, and the group was effectively not present in the building
from January through March. Finally, Global Womens Strike and Chiapas
Support Committee, who have been members much longer, would like a room of
their own and have never been late on rent ($564 and $200, respectively) or
gone inactive from delegates meetings.
This is the proposal and those are my thoughts. Plz discuss.

Hey Cere, everyone - I'm happily back from Budapest. Saw some great stuff
there, didn't realize that it's where Tesla started his career as an
electrical engineer after a series of fleeing gambling debts and dropping
out of school. =D
I've been messing around with various (non open source) animation programs.
It would be cool to do a jam around a cartoon for SudoRoom and/or Count
Culture Labs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHg_PLGXUC0
I have Moho Pro /Anime Studio and MotionArtist, which spits out HTML5
clickable comics. If anyone is interested it'd be cool. It'd also be cool
tot hook any of these animation projects into some kind of hardware
display, nam jun paik or bill viola style:

Counter Culture Labs has a free full size -80 freezer available. It is
actually an older -86 C freezer but it now "only" comes down to -80 C. It's
working but it should really have a new air filter installed before being
put to use (nothing special, just to prevent dust getting into the
compressor).
We're getting a slightly newer model. What we need in return is for you to
pick up our new freezer at a lab at UC Berkeley, bring it to Counter
Culture Labs in Oakland, and then of course pick up our old freezer for
your own use.
The freezer you'd be getting measures:
H: 200 cm
W: 110 cm (includes handle)
D: 94 cm
The one you'd be moving for us is almost the exact same dimensions.
Be aware that these are _very_ heavy. They cannot be allowed to lie down at
any point (they will break). Tilting them up to 30 degrees is ok, but
that's it. You'll probably want a forklift or a bunch of strong folk and
some hefty ropes.
If you want this freezer we need a firm commitment by late Sunday evening.

Hi there! I'm a cosplayer scouting around for a photoshoot location, and
the folks at Maker Media referred me to y'all. I was wondering if that

2016, which begs a hacker/workbench-type setting!
My photographer friend and I are super respectful of the work y'all do and
wouldn't want to disturb anybody in the space, so we could do a late night

as you may have noticed, the payphone outside omni has been vandalized. the
handset is broken. also, it does not make phone calls and the voice menu
doesn't tell you anything.
cel and I are changing that. we are going to add the ability to dial out to
phone numbers in the USA for free. (no incoming calls though) and also add a
proper voice prompt menu listing the collectives in Omni so that people can
actually use the phone to call in.
later we will add the ability for people answering the phone inside the omni to
press a button to buzz the door open when someone calls them, and we'll add
more phones to places besides just sudoroom and CCL.
I believe part of the reason that the payphone was vandalized is because people
wanted to make calls and the phone didn't work, so they smashed it. Who knows.
Anyway i don't think Omni should shy away from the opportunity to provide
something useful like that, seeing as we've already installed a payphone.

regarding the flourescent light ballasts in the basement, i believe the
replacements i installed were inductive but they may have been electronic.
I don't know if they are saying that the LED replacement lamps are _only_
compatible with "inductive" ballasts and not electronic, or if they mean that
they are OK with leaving the ballast in place.
I do not believe that our lighting fixtures use starters at all though, so I
just can't guess whether any particular LED replacement bulbs will work with
our fixtures without modifications.
the right thing to do would be to order a single LED replacement bulb (or a
pair, since sometimes they only work in pairs) and test our ballasts with them.
then if they work, we can get more, enough for all the fixtures we need them
for.
that said, i think that if we have any more working conventional flourescent
bulbs in stock (including in fixtures which need a replacement ballast) we
should use them up before switching to buying LEDs.

Hi Jenny:
I’m trying to schedule a non-profit theater group for multiple nights of
performances and rehearsals in the Ballroom in May (which is super tough:)
because there’s lots going on!
The request for the Seagull production is for 8 dates, starting with
Wednesday May 3 from 5 to 11 pm. Sudo room has that night booked for ‘5
Minutes of Fame’ . Could that possibly be moved to the Disco Room or in
the basement hall?
I hate to bother you because you probably had a hard time getting that date
as well - but if this works out, we might make some good money!
Thanks,

Hi all,
Daniel Enking is organizing a biodigester hackathon in CCL this coming
weekend (Fri evening to Sunday). We were wondering if it would be OK for
participants to use some of the tools available in Sudo, including the
drill press, chop saw, etc. We are expecting four teams of 2-3 people, so
perhaps 12 participants in total, which would mostly be working inside CCL.
I think we should at a minimum make sure that everyone signs a waiver if
they're not CCL or Sudo members. I'm also trying to arrange for at least
one responsible CCL member to be there at all times. And I think we should
ask participants for donations to Sudo if they use Sudo's equipment.
Opinions? Modifications?

Ok I want to start a session of algorithms for fun instead of soul killing random job interviews. I completely did badly on my last coding interview on a pretty easy problem!
I think I'll start involving real life examples as well as stuff drawn from game development!
Sent from my iPhone
NICE!
I'd love a few of those, but I may not be able to come by Sudo before
Friday.
I would recommend donating the remainder to the Bay Area Swaporama folks. I
can put you in touch if needed.

You all have first dibs on them. If you want them, let me know and I will

I have a proposal - a SudoRoom dystopian science fiction night.
*Background:* Since the November elections [actually the past 2 years]
there's been a sharp uptick in dystopian science fiction novels, especially
for young adults. After the election books like *The Handmaid's Tale
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Handmaid%27s_Tale>* and 1984 have
skyrocket to the top of the bestseller lists.
In this climate of fear, many artists' groups are experiencing an uptick in
membership. In this time, more than ever, we need well-meaning art, science
and the humanities to make sense of a dystopian world that has become
reality.
*Proposal: *Let's gather all the people who feel overwhelmed by current
events and have a Dystopian Tea Party every week. Ideally Wednesdays.
While the topics are a little negative, they'll also provide *a positive
springboard* - if the future really can go this badly, and it looks like it
might happen, what can we do to mitigate or avoid it?
If we deregulate auto emissions and return to pollution levels of the
1950s, how can we turn this around and reverse the damage?
*Meeting Ideas:*
- *Nuclear War night*
- Create art around nuclear war hitting San Francisco
- Understand the science and art behind nuclear bombs - how would
this affect our environment
- What political arrangements and military mistakes would provoke a
nuclear war? [political science
- What kind of clothes could we wear to protect ourselves from
nuclear war?
- *AntiFeminist Dystopia Night*
- What are all the possible scenarios where women's rights could be
trampled in the US? Could Texan abortion laws reach California?
- art and science fiction around an antifeminist dystopia
- Studies of feminist texts like Backlash and The Handmaid's Tale
- how science is used to oppress women, how science could be used to
free women
- *Environmental Disaster Scenario*
- Predictive Futures Design topic - As the United States looks
increasingly headed for environmental disaster with the assault
on the EPA,
will our cities look like Delhi and China?
- Predictive future illustrations of what a smoggy United States
will look like
- Design of gasmasks for children in places where auto emissions
are deregulated. We could make a 3D printout
- Environmental 101 - how does polluting a national park work? What
are things that can go wrong when oil pipelines spill?
- How can hackers fix Flint Water supply? WHat's the science behind
this?
- Health Sciences Hacking - Poor americans are probably going to live
in increasingly polluted, unhealthy environments with little or no
regulation. More air pollution, more cancer. In a predictive futures
scenario, what kind of low-end hospitals will exist for these
people? What
strange new diseases will appear?
- *Education Disaster Scenario*
- Predictive futures: What happens when education is completely
privatized and what dystopian outcomes can happen as more for-profit
universities and private religious schools become the only option for US
children?
- Science Fiction scenarios: we could do a writing workshop. Imagine
the US became total theocracy and only conversvative Christian schools
believing in creationism were allowed to exist. What kind of evolution
underground would form? What if science had to be conducted in secret?
- We could design a education disaster scenario textbook. What if
only mega corporations took over and presented textbooks full of
"alternative facts" ????
- What kind of society would we become if all funding for the arts
and humanities were entirely cut at universities, as has been
suggested in
Florida. What if nobody was only allowed to study a topic if it
suited the
needs of a mega corporation and no theory was allowed ever? What
if people
were only allowed to take business and commucinations degrees and had no
concept of philosophy?
- This would be pretty cool, it'd be fun to have a film project
where someone in this society would discover the lost book of
humanities
and create a secret theater group, then get jailed.
- Muslim Disaster Scenario
- What if muslims in the United States and Europe were systematically
targeted in a way that the jews were by the Nazis in the 1940s?
- In a science fiction novels how could noble heroes protect an
increasingly muslim minority, as some national organization moves to move
them into concentration camps?
- This scenario is actually too depressing, but it would be cool to
highlight great tMuslim scientists of the past and find safety check
scenarios

Yeah, as far as scripts to use for downloading things, visited in pretty
much consecutive order
http://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=UC_Berkeley_Course_Captureshttps://lbry.io/news/20000-illegal-college-lectures-rescuedhttps://lbry.io/quickstart
FWIW, although plenty of others probably DO have access to this LBRY for
seeing what's already accessible at the UC Berkeley Archive Wiki,
couldn't gain access for myself.
And a decided No, I'm not yet willing to take the time-consuming effort
of describing my situation in detail in order to supposedly "help" the
admins-that-be on github.com/lbryio/lbry or wherever else fix their
archive accessibility issues :(
Too many hoops for me to go thru, so I'll do without these Cal lectures
for the present, no problem.

The next sudo room 5 minutes of fame is happening on April 5th.
Add yourself to the wiki or respond to this email if you'd like to speak
for five minutes about something you're working on or excited about!
https://sudoroom.org/wiki/5MoF_2017-04-05
We really need more volunteers to help ensure that the event runs smoothly.
Last time we had more technical issues than needed.
We need:
* Someone to talk about what sudo room is and the rest of the omni during
waiting periods in between talks (when people are setting up their laptop).
* Someone to set up signs guiding people from the outside of the omni to
the right area
* Someone to sit near the door and take donations (you can still see the
talks)
* Someone to help set up and clean up the snack table
* Someone to talk to speakers and ensure they have what they need (display
adapters, internet, sound, etc.) before they have to speak.
* Someone to lead a tour around sudo room and the omni during the break
* Someone to sit by the audio mixer and adjust volume as needed
Please respond to this thread or to me if you're able to help out with any
of these.

I managed to score some reels of components to feed the pick&place, at a
lab we were helping to clean out this morning.
Mostly smallish pieces; hardly any full reels. But there should be some
good diversity in there at least. I didn't count but I would guesstimate I
grabbed maybe a hundred reels or so in total. There's a whole bin full of
good quality scope probes, and some other knickknacks as well.
I'll try to drop them off before the delegates meeting tonight. Could
probably use a hand getting all the boxes out of my car...
Patrik
do you, or someone you know, have a roomba scooba floor mopper robot?
my friend found a scooba in the trash and i sent it to my nephew to play with
but there was no charger, and it uses a different connector for the charger
plug and I don't know what the pinout is.
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/iRobot-Scooba-Power-Supply-AC-Adapter-Charger-Model-…
it has a DIN-5 connector like MIDI but it only uses 3 pins. There are pictures
of the charger on the web, but the label on the charger shows the pinout for
the original barrel connector :p
i want to measure someone's scooba charger so i can send him one or something.
did you know they're eays to hack and tell them where to drive? they have a
serial port and you can just plop a small computer on top and drive it around,
looking through the webcam.
