if sudoroom wants the omni to continue to exist, we will need to all get
on-board to keep this boat afloat.

Subject: [omni-consensus] !! Financial announcement !!
Hi friends,I'm stuck at work and probably won't make it to the delegate's meeting tonight, but I wanted to make an announcement about the Omni's
finances.
As many of you know, the Omni has been running a monthly deficit of about $8,000 - $9,000 every month. We've been able to make up for that by dipping
into the funds raised in December through the Indiegogo campaign, but those funds are running out quickly.
We currently only have enough $$ in the bank to cover two months of rent and expenses. Member collectives can do your part by paying invoices on time
(and even early if you're able!) for the next few months. If your collective has outstanding invoices for rent and shared expenses, this would be a great
time to appeal to your members for extra support so you can pay any $$ still owed to the Omni.
The finances working group has been updating our Quickbooks and will soon be able to present more detailed and thrilling financial reports so everyone
will have a clearer picture of where the Omni's money is coming from and how it's being spent.
Better data = more lucid decisions.
Let me know if you have any questions about this. The next finances working group will be held on Wednesday, July 22 at 7 pm at the Omni. Come hang out
with us if you want to learn more about Omni $$$.
xxxxooo,
SP
One of the video documentary people who were visiting us during the cheese
making workshop at CCL this Monday lost a black backpack with 2 Canon
lenses, his ID and credit cards.
If anyone saw it, please let us know!
Thanks...
Patrik
Hi again,
In addition to the outstanding rent invoice for April, please see the attached invoice for shared expenses at the Omni in April. It would be great if you're able to pay at least part of this invoice as soon as possible.
The Omni is in a precarious financial situation currently so I'm asking all member collectives to pay outstanding invoices if they're able.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks again,
Sarah

if you put a 1 ohm resistance, you will just blow up the resistor.
24 volts divided by 1 ohm = 24 amps
24 volts times 24 amps = 576 watts
you need to find the highest number of ohms that will still cause the
motor controller to not give you an error. Lets say you find that a 100
ohm resistor (in place of the missing motor) causes the controller to be
OK. When you move the joystick, and it tries to turn the fake motor, it
will give it up to 24volts. But it's a 100 ohm resistor.
24v / 100 ohm = 0.24 amps
24v * 0.25 amps = 5.76 watts
if it works with a 100 ohm, you should use that. 5.76 watts is
reasonable. 576 watts is most of a horsepower and is not reasonable.
5
in case you're not confused i'll tell you this: the power a motor
consumes (from a fixed voltage source for example) depends on the amount
of force it's putting out.
So if you have a motor just spinning a wheel in the air it doesn't take as
much power as if you're making it grind grain, or push a fat person up a
steep incline. The ohms you measure when you use a multimeter on the
stopped motor correspond to its MAXIMUM power, basically.
so if you stopped the motor and applied 24v, 576 watts would flow through
it and heat it up pretty fast. But if you let it spin freely in the air,
its effective impedance would be much higher than 1 ohm!
as for how to isolate the motors for different jobs.. we can read the
manual on the control box and adjust the settings, or just hook up the
computer control and let it do all the work. I don't know though.

Subject: [omni-discuss] Important Omni meetings in July
To: "discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org" <discuss(a)lists.omnicommons.org>
Friends,
*There are 3 important meetings coming up in July that we need people who
support the Omni to attend**.*
On Thursday 7/16, at the regular delegates meeting, several proposals
will be discussed along with
information about David Keenan's sabbatical from the Omni.
On Thursday 7/23 at 7pm we will meet to update the community about
progress being made towards buying the building. Options for how to
structure the purchase and ownership will be presented and discussed.
Thursday 7/30 we will be holding our official Annual Board meeting as
required by our bylaws. New officers (President, Treasurer/CFO,
Secretary) will be selected. Currently Lara Durback is willing to be
President, Sarah Pritchard has agreed to be Treasurer, and Jenny Ryan
is willing to continue as Secretary. If you have an interest in
serving in any of these roles, let us know. Also, per our bylaws,
*each member collective must officially designate a delegate** at the
annual meeting. **Each collective should choose a delegate according
to its own internal process before th**e meeting.
Please forward this email to your collectives so we can have as much
participation as possible.
*Thanks,
<3

Hi all,
There's a cool event based in Uganda, but designed for remote
participation, this weekend.
"Outernet" is a project to repurpose satellites to "broadcast" free
information, that can be picked up by inexpensive receivers, for free, and
then reshared for free over local networks/WiFi. A way to get information
to remote and underserved parts of the world. It's one-way communication,
so certainly not a replacement for the Internet or a total solution to the
Digital Divide -- but a very cool project nonetheless. They are also
developing democratic processes for deciding what content to share.
They are having an edit-a-thon this weekend. I thought Sudo folks might be
interested. Keep in mind, this is 10am to 10pm Uganda time -- which
midnight to noon Saturday Pacific (I think it's the same hours Sunday, need
to confirm).

And see their blog post:

If anybody would like to pass this along to Noisebridge or other lists that
might be interested, please do!

Aw it's ok, I wasn't upset. Glad that he is returning to life in some
form, actually. :)
Hey all, I'm trying to build a winch for the 14' projection screen that
going up over the ballroom stage out of a wheelchair motor assembly. Per
Jake's suggestion, I hacked 2 server PSUs to get 24v@14a but the controller
is not working and the error code says the right wheel/motor is missing/not
engaged. Anyone know what I am missing? Do I need to jump something to get
the controller to engage while it is "incomplete"?
Thank you,

Hi there,
Checking in about payment for Sudo Room's rent in April (see attached invoice). I apologize for not being totally in the loop on this, but it's my impression that the Omni agreed to give Sudo a $135.00 rebate on your April rent as reimbursement for paying the Omni's wifi. Is that correct?
If so, please see the outstanding balance on your invoice for April 2015 rent and process payment as soon as you're able. Otherwise, please let me know if any of this is incorrect so I can update your invoice accordingly.
Thanks so much!

Join us *Wednesday, **July 22nd from 6:30-10:30 p.m*. for a the San
Francisco Premiere of the documentary film "*Life on Bitcoin*," at the
Internet Archive.
The film covers the experience of newlyweds Austin and Beccy Craig who
struggle for 100+ days to live entirely on the upstart currency.
Austin and Beccy will attend and conduct a Q&A session following the film.
The couple began the experiment when their credit cards, debit cards and
cash were confiscated at the airport upon arrival from their honeymoon.
“It felt like learning to swim by jumping in the deep end of the pool,”
said Austin Craig.
For the next three months, the Craigs tested Bitcoin (and their marriage)
by relying solely on the cryptocurrency for every expense, including gas,
rent, groceries, speeding tickets, and insurance. For every transaction,
they had to evangelize the currency to survive. Ultimately their adventure
took them on a road trip across the United States and into Europe and Asia.
This film sheds light on the practical strengths and early limitations of
bitcoin technology and mixes it with a large dose of entertainment and fun.

Subject: [sudo-info] Make your own microscope class - could we use your space?
To: info(a)sudoroom.org
Hi,
We're looking to run a 'Make your own microscope' craft class for
homeschooled kids based on this Foldscope kit, and are looking for a
location to host it in or close to Berkeley and I wondered if we might
be able to use your space for a fee?
The class would be on Wednesday, July 22, 2-4pm. If it could be a
possibility, perhaps we could jump on the phone briefly to discuss?
Some context: we're working on Outschool which is a project to make
more great learning activities available outside regular school. We're
initially focused on the homeschooling community and have blogged
about the ideas behind the project here:

I'd appreciate your help or suggestions. Many thanks for your time!

So there's this chip that I just gotta have for a project I am working on.
The only problem is that it seems like EVERYTHING in IC form now it
packaged in these teensy little surface mount chips. I don't have a small
enough soldering iron and I'd rather not hassle with trying to make it work
with my shitty equipment.
Wondering if sudo or Noisebridge is set up for a solder reflow oven with an
accurate temperature control? Also, I am not totally clear about how I
create a silkscreen soldering setup for a given PCB design. Does anyone on
this list have a lot of experience with this?
Thanks,

Subject: [liberationtech] Call for free software projects ( and other types
of organizations ) to sign an anti-patent-troll pledge
To: liberationtech <liberationtech(a)lists.stanford.edu>
Hi,
The Calyx Institute is running a campaign to try to get 40 organizations to
sign a pledge against patent troll lawsuits directed against Linux,
Android, Apache, MySQL, PHP, Tor Project and dozens of other free software
projects and organizations
What if your organization isn't one that develops software or holds
software patents? That's OK ! We still would like your organization to
sign the pledge.
Even if you run a supermarket, a social network or a workers union, we are
very happy with your organization becoming a member of the community
supporting patent non-aggression. Open source is everywhere (from the cash
register running on GNU/Linux, the server that hosts your website and mail
or the medical equipment measuring your lung capacity). Everyone should be
able to use these open source packages donated by their creators without
thinking twice. By joining, you make a difference.
The link to the pledge, and associated FAQ's is at the following URL:
https://nlnet.nl/help/
It's really easy to do, it should take less than 5 minutes.
Just click the URL, click on the 'Sign me up' button, then fill out your
project or organization's information, and just be sure to do what it says
in the confirmation email ( which comes from a totally different domain )
The subject of the email should be something like "OIN license agreement

Here is the finance report from the meeting tonight.
We have $1031 in the bank.
Our minimum expenses are ~$2400 / month:
* rent: $2000
* utilities, taxes: $300
* insurance: $94
Our income is $1820 / month:
* gratipay: 285.96*4 = 1145
* stripe: 675
This means our bank account is draining at $580 / month.
$1031 / ($580 / month) = 1.78 months
So in 1.78 months we will be out of money.
Unless you help! https://sudoroom.org/donate/
Every amount helps.
Hi all,
I'll be teaching a liqueur making workshop at CCL this Sunday:
http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/events/222550428/
If you know anyone local with a lemon tree that badly needs picking, or a
walnut tree that still has unripe green walnuts on it, let me know! We'd
love to turn them into yummy limoncello and nocino liqueurs...
Thanks!

The catch is, the motor doesn't run. Not sure what the problem is,
might be a loose power connection, might be a dead motor, or anything in
between. If you want it email me for the address.

Ooh, I didn't realize this was a thing! I'd be interested to know where/when.
I got a donated PCR machine today and it is working fine after some reassembly but one of the fans sounds kinda sick.
It needs a replacement 24 volt 2.5 by 2.5 by 1 inch fan. Here's a photo:

Anyone have one lying around.
I already looked through the sudo box of fans.

I made a little app and set up one of the old One Laptop Per Child
computers to show the next five upcoming omni events in the next 24 hours.
The idea is to mount it on the outside of omni as a sort of menu of the
day's upcoming events :)
The OLPC laptop is good for this because it has a special screen that turns
reflective when there's lots of light. It is fully readable both at night
and in the harshest California sun.
Here's a photo:
https://imgur.com/wRLir3a
Here's the little web app (it's formatted for the smaller OLPC display):

Here's the code and write-up:

Now we just need a box with a thick layer of transparent acrylic to house
it. Anyone up for making one?

Hellos,
We have physically connected two switches: HP and Cisco (I believe), via
CAT6 cable.
One switch is located at the Server Area and the other on the second floor
(which will be used to connect computers that can be used by the public in
general).
THE CALL:
The layer one part is done, but I feel that someone else with more
switching/routing knowledge than me should check this two switches for any
possible misconfiguration. I am not keen on this, but I could help someone
that can lead this part.
Please let me know if someone else already done this, so I can drop this
part and continue with the rest of things that need to be done on the
second floor.
Thanks in advance,
Daniel

Okay folks, the run from the second floor (where the public computers area)
to the server area has been done.
It took me a few hours, moving like molasses, but it is done! :)
* One end has been terminated at the Server area patch panel port 32.
* The other end of the cable was terminated to a female RJ45 connector
(without a box, because I didn't find one).
I WILL BE MOVING HP SWITCH UP THE WALL:
I noticed that a HP Procurve 24 port switch was left on top of one of the
desktop computers; but I will move it up to the column above this table, so
members and visitors don't mess with it. -Remember, this switch is feeding
a connection the door lock system and, I believe, also the bookstore
register area. And we really don't want those two connections to lose
connections, just because someone unplugged the wrong cable or unplugged
the wrong electrical cord or etc, etc.
I will be updating the chart by the patch panel at the Server area to
reflect this new connection.
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi.
I'm trying to write up an EAGLE board layout and failing miserably. I'm
using the freeware EAGLE suite for the mac. Dunno if that's making my life
harder than usual or not, but does anyone have recommendations for good
EAGLE tools and/or willing to help me figure out how to work this thing?

I am trying to run the network cable from th second floor to the server

I need a drill to make a hole (on one of the walls at the kitchen that
connect to CCL), but I cannot find a cordless drill.
Well, I also need the drill bit for that too.

one of the 8-foot fluorescent lightbulbs in the fixture in the south-east
corner of the room needs to be replaced.
it's the bulb on the west side of the fixture (the bulb with the blackened
end) and it's causing the ballast to overheat and shut off regularly.
please get the super-long free-standing ladder (it might be on the stage)
and set it up next to the fixture, at the north end of the fixture so you
can access the end opposite the spring-loaded contacts. Then push the bad
bulb toward the south end to free it from the north-end contact, and
carefully lower it down.
replacement bulbs are in a box in the room between La Commune and the
Ballroom, which is also between the two staircases that go to the upstairs
kitchen area. You will need a key to access the room.
There also may be new lightbulbs in a box in sudoroom/CCL or perhaps in
the basement, or you can steal one from one of the fixtures in the
basement labeled "ballast" if it has bulbs in it, but doesn't light up.
If you access the supply room to get the bulb, you should consider putting
a transparent sheath over the bulb, with the black plastic endcaps over
both ends, before installing it. And tape to keep the endcaps from
falling off.
thank you

I submitted a proposal for a talk at CCCamp 2015: an updated presentation of the Hackerspace Design Patterns. It was accepted!
tl;dr:
Have you observed a Pattern (what works well, and what not so well) at your hackerspace that you think others can benefit from? If so, please share it with me, so I can share it with others in my talk.
Design Patterns are generalize-able statements of what works well and doesn't work so well -- so that others can learn what may work well (or not so well) for them.
The original Hackerspace Design Patterns was presented at CCCamp 2007 and 24C3 when there were only ~40 hackerspaces in the world. Here's the original Design Patterns (which are way worth reading!):
http://events.ccc.de/congress/2007/Fahrplan/attachments/1003_Building%20a%2…
These patterns directly inspired the creation of the hackerspace movement. Now that there are over 2,000 hackerspaces listed on hackerspaces.org, it's time to update the Design Patterns to include 8 years of additional collective experience -- and present them at CCCamp 2015.
FYI:
A somewhat updated version (that needs more updating) of the Hackerspace Design Patterns are listed at hackerspaces.org:
https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/Design_Patterns
Do you have any observations of what works well, and what doesn't work so well at your hackerspace (or any hackerspace)? Can you state it in a way that may be generalized so that people starting (or running) hackerspaces may benefit from your observation? If so, please send me your observation, and I'll incorporate it into my talk.
My 30-minute talk at CCCamp 2015 will include some old and some new examples. After the talk we will have a workshop on Hackerspace Design Patterns, and really get into what works well, and doesn't work well at hackerspaces. I'll take notes, write it up, and post it so that everyone starting or running a hackerspace can benefit from our collective experiences.
Thanks,
Mitch.
Hi all!
I'm on linux and would like to see the file contents of an .exe file (from the terminal):
Here's what happens when I run the file command:
$ file some.exe
PE32 executable (GUI) Intel 80386, for MS Windows, Nullsoft Installer self-extracting archive
I've found several GUIs online which will run on windows and do the disassembling, but would love to just be able to unpack from the linux terminal.
I've tried decompressing with bzip2, xz, gzip and no success.
I'd figure I'd ask around if anybody has done this in the past.
Thanks,
-Luis
@Wild Cat, way to go keeping level headed, its inspiring.
even though i am not one of the individuals involved, and especially
because i have at times found myself treated in a similar, if mild
comparatively , way, (what a twisty sentence)
*ahem*
would like to apopolgize on behalf of humanity, which apparently has been
acting reprehensibly. i am sorry. We monkeys are trying to get this
sorted out -- we have to, and, i may like to see other ppls side of things
mostly, but in this case any asshole or idiot who thinks otherwise is just
plain wrong. wrong to treat you badly and wrong not to spend that precious
energy and time helping to sort out the mess we call the human condition.
I offer this even though you are a stranger, for being level headed,
because it is my belief that the most levelheaded monkeys are our best hope
of averting nuclear war or a similar, stupid fate.

Hi all,
No one gives a rat's ass about my mission to build cheap x-ray units
for the unprivileged world, so I'm done with electronics and any
non-google/other tech firm related engineering.
My new goal is to put a song on the Billboard top 10 by the time I'm
25. Anyone know of any good "learn to music" resources?
Cheers,
-Adam
