I updated the donate button on sudoroom.org so it now let's you do either a
one-time credit card donation + has a link to sudo-humans for recurring.
We should set up paypal as well if people want to give us that.
It would also be nice to have recurring payments without needing a
sudo-humans account. If anyone feels like adding that to the wordpress.

It's actually the base that used to hold our "huge" 36" CRT TV. That TV
weighed well over 200 pounds, and this handled it with ease.
There's a metal platform that the TV sat on. That platform can pivot 360
degrees around on a nice bearing. Then that entire platform is on heavy
duty drawer slides that let the whole thing slide back and forth about a
foot. That in turn is attached to a metal frame that was bolted to a shelf.
If anyone has a use for this thing, let me know and it is yours. Also if
you want more details or pictures, just email me and I will answer.
Have fun,

The Renters’ Archive Posted on September 15, 2013
Over the past couple of months, I’ve been working on a new Archiving the
City intervention, called *“The Renters’ Archive”* based on my experiences
of renting apartments in Brooklyn over the past decade. This project was
commissioned by The Laundromat Project
<http://laundromatproject.snappages.com/field-day.htm>, and developed in
collaboration with The Laundromat Project’s Create Change Fellows

In a nation of homeowners, where owning property is the still The Dream,
New York stands out as a city of life-long renters. The Renters’ Archive
project provides a way to explore the experience of being a renter, by
looking at the objects and habits and relationships and dreams that a
person collects over the course of a renting life. On September 21, 2013,
The Renters’ Archive will present the opportunity for residents of Bed-Stuy
and surrounding neighborhoods to reflect upon their own experiences of
being renters–a situation shared by approximately 80% of the neighborhood’s
residents.
Please stop by and share your own experiences of renting (or landlording)

What is the home of your dreams? Can you remember all the places you’ve
lived in, and all the neighbors you’ve had? If you could write your own
lease, what would it say? What are the objects that you take with you every
time you move? How do you archive your valuable documents and
artifacts? What do you do to make a new place feel like home?As part of
this event, I will be presenting a new participatory performance:*A NEW
LEASE FOR NEW YORK*Have you taken a good look at your lease lately? A lease
is a legal contract that defines the roles of “Tenant” and “Landlord,” and

the relationship we are entering into with our landlords. This workshop
provides a chance to do just that: reflect and transform relationships with
our spaces, our neighbors and our landlords. *An artist will act as

I saw some design fiction films at at the SF Critical Design and Imagined
Futures meetup.
I'm wondering, have any SudoRoom filmmakers or others at the Omni created
any design fiction films?
It would be cool to show films with:
- worker collectives
- a world where people barter/contribute through time banks instead of
heavily capitalist systems
- a kind of imaginary world where there is affordable housing provided
for all and people do not face eviction / housing shortages and live in
yurts
If we have a party maybe it would be cool to try to do a design fiction
film with one of these speculative idealized futures. =D

Sample Projects
-
- Im)possible Baby
Ai Hasegawa, Sputniko! and Asako Makimura
Delivering a baby from same-sex parents is not a sci-fi dream
anymore–recent developments in genetics and stem cell research have made
this dream much closer to reality. Is creating a baby from same-sex parents
the right thing to do? Who has the right to decide this, and how? This
project explores the bioethics of producing babies for same-sex couples. In
the first phase, DNA data will be simulated to visualize the "potential
baby." The project will then explore creating partial organs of the
"potential baby" over the next few years. You have the right to know,
think, and raise your voice about whether this dream becomes a reality–not
just the authorities and researchers.

- CremateBot: Transform, Reborn, Free
Sputniko! and Dan Chen
CremateBot is an apparatus that takes in human-body samples—such as
fingernails, hair, or dead skin—and turns them into ashes through the
cremation process. The process of converting human remains to ashes becomes
a critical experience for observers, causing witnesses to question their
sense of existence and physical self through the conversion process.
CremateBot transforms our physical self and celebrates our rebirth through
self-regeneration. The transformation and rebirth open our imagination to
go beyond our physical self and cross the span of time. Similar to Theseus'
paradox, the dead human cells—which at one point were considered part of
our physical selves and helped to define our sense of existence—are
continually replaced with newly generated cells. With recent advancements
in implants, biomechatronics, and bioengineered organs, how we define
ourselves is increasingly blurred.

- Crowbot Jenny
Sputniko! (Hiromi Ozaki)
Crowbot Jenny, inspired by Donna Haraway’s philosophical memoir When
Species Meet (2007), is a solitary girl who, despite her generation’s
tendency toward communication overload, has trouble relating to her peers.
In fact, Crowbot Jenny prefers to talk with animals and develops the
Crowbot, an instrument that replicates a range of crow calls, to commune
with her army of birds. Sputniko! talked with various crow specialists from
University of Cambridge (UK), University of Utsunomiya (Japan), and
University of Tokyo (Japan) who also provided her with sample crow
calls—such as "Hello," "I'm in danger," "I love you!" or "Where is my
Child!?"—which she installed inside Crowbot.

One of the most well done usability mobile phone apps I've ever seen. Some
artist academics created a feature phone mobile app for undocumented
immigrants on the San Diego/Tijuana desert border.
It was a very simple compass app that also had a tuning fork feature. the
closer the immigrants came to hidden water reserves left out by charities
and activists, the more the phone would vibrate. This was to solve the
problem of immigrants dying of thirst in the desert.
Of course they got into trouble...

Citizen Scientists and Hackers of the World,
Counter Cultures Labs' Kickstarter [1] to upgrade its current lab is
almost 80% funded, but we only have a few days left! We're getting very
close to our goal so WE NEED people to help spread the word. Counter
Culture Labs is made by and for the community. We are committed to being
YOUR biohacking & citizen science lab.
Exploring science and the mysteries of the universe is something
everyone should be able to do. We are here to support dreamers to find
new innovations. The most creative products were made, not in industry
or academia, but from people tinkering in their backyards and garages
because they love it. Let's give people access to their potential!
We need the community to help spread the word about our Kickstarter and
the awesome prizes [1] we have such as a hackerspace/biohackerspace
passport, a bacterial culture necklace, and/or a bacteria we discovered
named after you. Check em out, [1] and please forward this message!

Do you have a hardware project you'd like to put out into the world?
I am a mentor at HAX (formerly HAXLR8R). We choose 15 groups of people with cool hardware projects, give a small pile of money for your project, you live in Shenzhen, China for 3 months, have access to way cool tools and mentors, the groups all help each other, you learn a lot, and have a blast. And you make your project into a product that goes out into the world. At the end of the 3 days there's a big Demo Day in San Francisco where everyone shows off their projects, with plenty of media attention, and even angel investors.
The deadline for the upcoming group is extended a few days. If you're interested, please submit your proposal here:

peoples,
does anyone have a junker inkjet printer laying around that I could hack
on? Or does sudoroom have a junker inkjet printer laying around that I
could hack on? I'm specifically interested in the print head and nozzles,
it doesn't need to have ink or working motors or anything
and if anyone's ever played with print heads before, I would love some

Hi Sam,
This is Niki from La Commune. I'd like to ask that you please stop going
behind the La Commune counter.
If you want to make coffee, I can find another coffee make to put somewhere
in the kitchen upstairs but the coffee and coffee maker behind the La
Commune counter is not for the "cafe" / bookstore.
In order for La Commune to function, we need to keep this space in order
and we have requested that anyone who is not a member of La Commune please
refrain from using this space.
Thanks a lot in advance for you understanding!

someone "cleaned" the 3d printer table and now the guitar string that we
use to clear up clogs in the nozzle is missing.
don't clean up something if you don't know how to use it! i'd rather have
a functional 3d printer or soldering setup than a clean, useless table.
i fixed the motor drivers on the type A machine 3d printer, now we just
need another guitar string to clean the nozzle and we're back in business.

Noémie from Optik Allusions
Hi all,
There's less than 24 hours to vote in the election for the Wikimedia
Foundation's Board of Trustees. This is a really important one, in my
opinion, and many others; in short, I believe the Foundation has been
suffering from never having prioritized understanding the social dynamics
in its volunteer base. That has been manifesting in many ways over the last
year or two. With three of 10 seats open, this is a good opportunity to
nudge things in a better direction. I wrote several blog posts about it,
here: http://wikistrategies.net/tag/trustee-election-2015/
In order to vote, you have to have at least 300 edits to Wikipedia or its
related projects -- 20 of them have to have been between last October and
April. (There are some other ways to qualify too, but that's the main one.)
All the voting info is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/Board_electi…
Voting ends at 4pm Pacific on Sunday May 31.
Wikipedia is IMO the most widespread and in many ways most important
instances of "hacker culture" having an impact. I think it's important that
its social health be understood, and that such knowledge should have a
strong influence in the kind of planning and intervention the Foundation
does. Please take a look, and if you're eligible, vote!

I'm sorry if this isn't really correct for this list, but I thought it
would be best to ask. I've just moved to Walnut Creek from a small city.
While I know it not to be fully true, I've always heard the standard
sterotype/generalization that 'Oakland isn't safe, blah blah blah, you're
going to get shot/mugged/other'. I would love to come vist Sudoroom,
everything I've read about it and the people there seems like a great time.
I suppose my question is "would I be safe to take BART down from Walnut
Creek to MacArthur and walk to sudo? Should I be worried?".
Any tips? I'm sorry, I'm just new around here.

The world outside is sort of hostile to hackers !
I was a little down because many well meaning people keep trying to direct me to fields inappropriate for me.. Social work, children's education . Mommy bloggers , public school teachers
Maybe it's because I'm a woman ! But I'm a hacker and nerd at heart.
Why do the powers that be try to take these making people and try to drown them out to become bureaucrats?
Even though we don't always get along we are honestly not passive like most normal people. I love the energy at Noisebridge and Sudoroom.
If I were forced to stop being a hacker and only socialize with passive non creative folks it'd definitely be a downer
But part of that energy comes with a dark side. We are often temperamental. We do not function well In sanitized environments that are "safe for kids". We Are not always the right people to do social work or teach non passionates
The energy comes with a price!
We are yin and yang.
But id rather hang out with true ha hackers of all genders. I imagine my future surrounded by bureaucrats and it's not pretty at all .. Or folks lecturing me not to do my best work because their notions of a woman's happiness are outdated and traditional
I hope we can all hug next Sunday
Love you all !

my biggest problem getting fully onto the 3D printing revolution is simply
dealing with the 3D software. I think printing was relatively easy
I'm wondering if I should help set up a repo at SudoRoom or Noisebridge
I remember doing a sudoroom comics jam...
we ended up taking Y's drawing and sticking it into a Makerbot tool and we
had an instant 3D printout.
https://github.com/sudoroom/ComicsArtSudoRoomhttps://github.com/sudoroom/ComicsArtSudoRoom/blob/master/TodayILearned/Tod…
it was nice having the serendipity. I'm thinking of doing another drawing
session at SudoRoom and taking the results and putting it to work on the
laser cutter.

Hey all,
I want to not care about anything anymore and let wolves run wild through
the streets.
I promise, I'm working on letting it all go and I'll be removing my voice
from many conversations moving forward.
In the meantime, I am going to ask for safe space bans on every member who
is in the building when no one is intentionally watching the door /
welcoming newcomers and the door has been left wide open.
This, to me, feels like an egregious safe space violation and encourages a
culture of confusion, which we are working hard to remedy.

Even though at times I got burned out by Sudoroom I can't express how much it saved me from burnout in Silicon Valley
Even though we might quarrel the tech scene has so much negative sides and there are an awful lot of clueless douchebags out here who don't get it
It's really cool to connect with people who are truly passionate about technology and Art. I see so many cities attempting to create their own silicon valleys and failing . You just can't
The Bay Area has a unique blend of artists and socially conscious folks !!! Thank you for teaching me.

Howdy hackers,
The vent tube for sudo laser cutter has been installed by I and Jake and
it's ready to go for whomever needs it. On the cutter there is a URL which
links to a guide to help you get started.
Hack.rit.edu/tools/fsl
Before you use the cutter just put the vent hose over the vent fan in back,
and plug that fan in. At some point we will have a permanent home for the
cutter so that step will be done for you, but not just yet.
Cheers,
-Adam
For those of you who aren't receiving sudo-info emails, Five Keys Charter
School just sent an email inquiring if we have any basic computer classes.
I have added my response to that email at the end of this email.
Honestly, I think this is a huge opportunity for sudo room, even though
Five Keys was founded by the San Francisco Sheriff's Department. Their goal
is restorative justice through education, and I think we're in a unique
position to help provide that to a community who seriously needs it and
doesn't have a lot of opportunities to receive it. (Thanks capitalism!)
I'd really like to discuss this at tonight's meeting. Even if we don't work
with Five Keys, I think we really should do more work at providing basic
tech/computer skills to the community. A lot of folks in Oakland have never
gotten the opportunity to get the basic skills they'd need to join in on so
many of the fantastic conversations in sudo, never mind participate in some
of the "higher level" projects.
If we really want to create a space where anyone in Oakland can hack, I
think we need to provide more people in Oakland with the basic skills they
need to spring up to the point they can self-educate.
And no, I'm not saying "somebody else" should be the one to do this. If I
can get my ducks in a line, I would love to try and hold some basics
classes. I just can't go at it alone. This is a burden a person can't hold
up on their own.
Here's the email I sent to the person who contacted us on behalf of Five
Keys:
Hi Mario!
We're not exactly a "program" -- we're a hackerspace, where anyone can come
and hack any time a member is present. Occasionally, we do have what many
could consider "classes" like cyber wizard institute
<http://cyber.wizard.institute/>, but for the most part the learning is
informal. We have groups that meet about certain subjects and if people are
willing, there may be learning at those groups. Hardware Hack Night on
Tuesdays at 7pm is often accessible to people who have little to no
experience in circuitry, but that's not really a training course, nor is it
computers. Sometimes we have Linux install parties or classes to teach the
basics of cybersecurity, but they're not usually ongoing classes.
However, as a group that strongly believes in Restorative Justice, I would
love to know what *your *needs are at Five Keys Charter School. I
personally have had some interest in seeing if sudo room could get together
some basic tech literacy classes as a bit of community outreach. The only
problem is, sometimes as hackers, we're a bit so entrenched in tech, we can
become disassociated with what basic computer literacy is. aka, it's hard
for me to tell if you're trying to find keyboarding classes, classes on how
to set up and use an email account and search for jobs, and classes on how
to use word processors, or if you're more interested in intro to coding,
basic electrical engineering, and learning how to use a 3D printer or a
laser cutter.
These are *all* things that sudo room could teach, as long as we found
someone, or someones willing to put together a curriculum and volunteer
their time. There's only one slight problem:
We don't have a lot of public computers. Now, this is also a problem that
we could spend some time fixing... but we'd probably not be able to
accommodate too many students within our small space if they were all on
desktops we've set up. One-on-one sessions might be more feasible for us.
Or, if some of your students have laptops they can bring, either their own,
or lent out from your school, that's the optimal solution for our setup.
If you're not already aware, sudo room is housed in a building called The
Omni Commons... It's a commons space that's a horizontally-run collective
of collectives. Our values as a space include restorative justice and
countering the dominant culture that disenfranchises so many folks in our
community. There are other groups that might be interested in working with
you:
Bay Area Public School teaches a variety of free classes on many topics,
but usually not tech-based. You can see their class list here
<https://bayareapublicschool.org/> and contact them by joining their email
list <https://groups.google.com/d/forum/bayareapublicschool>.
Counter Culture Labs is a biohacker space and they have a lot of wonderful
lectures on biology and related topics. Some of them are more specialized
and some of them just require an eagerness to learn. You can check out
their upcoming events and lectures on their Meetup page
<http://www.meetup.com/Counter-Culture-Labs/> and contact them by joining their
email list <https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/counterculturelabs>.
The Omni also hosts a lot of other awesome things, like pay-what-you-can
yoga and martial arts classes. Sometimes things fall through a bit because
we're entirely volunteer run and (for the most part) human, but we've got a
lot of really cool stuff going on. You can check out our full calendar
<https://omnicommons.org/calendar/> here. Pretty much everything is either
free or pay-what-you-can. We try to make every event never turn anyone away
for lack of funds.
I personally (although I can't speak for everyone) would love to see The
Omni and sudo have more opportunities to help reach out to those in our
community who could most benefit from what we can offer... and please, let
us know what kind of educational services are most needed, so we can see if
it's something we can help with.
- Ryan
(note: because sudo room and the Omni is horizontally led and no one's "in
charge," this email is not "official" and others may disagree with me.
Please don't take anything in it as a promise! I have not had a chance to
run all of this content by other collectives at a delegates meeting or by
other sudo room members at a sudo room meeting... but I am going to bring
this up at our meeting tonight! I think there are a lot of people who'd be
on board with seeing what we can help provide Five Keys, even though it is
founded by a sheriff's department.)

I wrote a fish penetration test, but it doesn't scale.
Owned by my roommate, Heather Fairweather. The frame has a unique design
shaped in a triple triangle. Black spray paint over pink and white paint.
Road bicycle. Ripped up seat with pink duct tape. Ripped up handlebar
tape.
Thanks!
I'm not sure what's the right list for this, if any, but...
it seems that this person Nyle is at the center of a lot of conflicts
lately, and is riding the edge of really unacceptable behavior.
The other night when Ranette went from 0-60 it was apparently because Nyle
said something unacceptable to her. I wasn't there, but I did witness an
argument between Nyle and another person who had no idea what Nyle wanted
to argue about.
This, in context with what Niki said about Nyle in her post to the
sudoroom list makes me think that people need to be aware that this person
is causing problems at the space.
At some point it may become necessary for this person to be asked to stay
away from the Omni.
thanks
