Hi all,
This Wednesday evening, from 7-10pm in the ballroom, Alternative Exposure
will be holding a grant information session for new applicants. If anyone
is interested in attending to give a short summary of what your group's
been up to since being funded by Alternative Exposure, it would be highly
appreciated! Also come if you're interested in applying for a SoEx grant -
they love the Omni and have been really supportive of our initiatives.
Grants are awarded to projects and organizations that do not yet have
federal 501c3 status. CyberWizard? Sudomesh? Omni itself??

Location:
Second floor computer area.
Issue:
HP Switch at the second floor turns off, often.
Temporary Correction:
Push the extension cable connector into the outlet (under the table) and it
will turn back on.
Situation:
This regular issue can be annoying to the end user, due that computers will
loose internet connection.
Marc J. mentioned that perhaps power for the switch should come from the
light fixture nearby, and remove the extension cord that is currently
feeding the switch.
Matt S. also had similar experience, he mentioned to me last week.
Call:
Can someone with electricity knowledge go there and check/fix the situation?
Additional Note:
I have not swap switches to make sure that is not the switch.
I suggest that if the main switch in the server area is Cisco, so then to
have same maker at the second floor. Just to have same routing protocols
between the two.
Also, I recall that several months ago I cleaned up the configuration of a
couple of Cisco switches and they are stored in the two post switch rack in
the server area. Feel free to take one of them, if needed.
Many thanks in advance, and please reply to this list if you will/worked on
this ticket. :)
Daniel

Subject: [omni-discuss] Becoming Omni Commons - All Hands On Deck! Aug 9th
@ 2pm-6pm Calling all Organizers, Facilitators, Helpers, and Omni Lovers!
To: becoming(a)lists.omnicommons.org
Hello!
*We invite you to join us on Sunday, August 9th at the Omni Commons.* We
are assembling a *Volunteer Design & Facilitation Team* that will plan and
steward a collective visioning and planning process with all of Omni
Commons. This future process, which we are calling *BECOMING OMNI COMMONS*,
will seek to:
* expand and transform our collective sense of possibility
* clarify our shared values
* examine our cultures, narratives and processes
* create priorities to move towards more sustainable and supportive ways of
being together and being in the world
* design an action-calendar for our visioning and planning process
A plan for BECOMING OMNI COMMONS will be presented to the Omni Commons
delegates council (our governance body ;) and actualized as soon as
possible.
*The details:*
*Who: *You! Anyone interested in joining our *Volunteer Design &
Facilitation Team* (described above)
*What: *A fun four-hour facilitated, preparatory meeting, followed by
DINNER!
*Where:* Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave, Oakland, CA 94609 (and possibly
on-line if you cannot be physically present)
*When:* *Sunday Aug 9th 2pm-6pm *(you must arrive on-time and stay for the
entire session)
*Why:*
*Given our present circumstances:*
* We are in a serious financial pickle right now.
* We have an opportunity to potentially buy the building very soon.
* We are struggling with interpersonal conflict, overwork, and burnout.
* We have never had the opportunity to engage in a visioning process since
moving into 4799 Shattuck a year ago.
*We need to:*
* Reform our processes to be inclusive of as many perspectives as possible.
* Align our work and our organizing with our ideals and our politics.
* Provide a safe platform for constructive criticism and reflection.
* Invest openness, patience and respect for the diversity of perspectives
and experiences of all of those who have been involved or impacted by Omni
Commons in some way or another.
*How:* If you'd like to join the team and can attend the meeting, RSVP to
becoming(a)lists.omnicommons.org and share any important requests or dietary
needs.
*Sunday, August 9th @ 2pm-6pm at 4799 Shattuck, Oakland. RSVP to
becoming(a)lists.omnicommons.org <becoming(a)lists.omnicommons.org>*If you

Hey now that we are preparing for cyberwizard, and there are people
learning, I'd like to point out that the monitors long the wall are
underutizlied.
we have about 12-15 ... I'll write a blog post about this with
instructions. It seems really common sense but isn't always. (unless
someone else does!)
a 2nd monitor is great for people who are learning to code, especially if
they have an IDE open and are using videos.
Guests and members visiting sudoroom should bring special outlets for their
computers. I'm unsure what chrome or linux folks use - I have a mac so I
have my own setup.

We had another experimental session involving fitness and art at the omni upstairs from Sudoroom
It went over my Head at some parts but there was a redefinition of fitness : fitness is not only about body fat but also mental health and the ability to survive and reproduce in rapidly changing environments
We taped alternate eyes to our own and spent most of the session with eyes closed as we imagined alternate realities .
Instead if an aerobics or spinning class we listened to a computer discussing the future and imagining sensations of augmented realities
The future was discussed as we stretched and writhed and the need to find new realties and ways of being !
As you know the omni Collective is a unique place. Many events that occur here wouldn't happen anywhere else
While I was doing fitness I ran into moms and dads preparing a benefit for Muhammad and emad at the solidarity Cafe. I think they're activists who got into trouble 😢

There are kids playing in the omni ballroom and people chatting in Spanish and folks of all religions doing bake sales to help these guys
It's nice ! Thanks omni and Sudoroom. ! Oakland needs you
We don't want Oakland to become what happened to the sf mission and Dolores park ❤️

I spent the afternoon getting the basics of node down .. I've reviewed it and even worked on it at work but I just sat down and reviewed everything using a treehouse video node js course that comes gratis with my sf public library membership
It took a few hours in between errands. There were people there it was nice to talk and even music
I used a spare cheap monitor to learn: wish I did that earlier ! We have dozens of monitors on the wall!! It's useful for learning with online video !
By studying the right way I got the basics down which saves time for later
The exercise had me building a simple node website modifying js to find information about student status and building a template website system
It's cool there are so many node people at Sudoroom . I'm normally a mobile Programmer on iOS so I don't usually touch website sfuff
I forked q basic Virtual Dom Code branch from Substack to Learn more
I'd like to use this info to build an open source web interface for my women who code project : it's a database of cool female film directors and films that pass the bechdel test
Later id like to push out some open source web & mobile projects . It's easier than it used to be
I try to combine art with code so i drew a cat in JavaScript forest
Later I'll clean up this email and then make it into a personal and Sudoroom blog post
Thanks Sudoroom !!

It appears to me as though the unspoken mission of the Omni collectives is
to provide infrastructure for groups that share the Occupy mission. Perhaps
the role of the Omni is not to be an umbrella organization that comprises
the various collectives. Instead, maybe the Omni's role is and has always
been to provide much needed infrastructure to local community activists
groups.
While considering this thought, I stumbled upon an article from Non-Profit
Quarterly which describes the need for such organizations, to wit:
