Call for Omni Working Group Participation!

At last night's Omni governance meeting [0], we talked at length about the current status of our working groups and how to go about encouraging work to get done principally in these working groups. We identified some issues, such as the same people bottom-lining and participating in all of the working groups. In short, we need fresh leadership! Working groups should also be encouraged to work as they see fit - which oftentimes is _not_ yet another weekly meeting, but perhaps a bi-weekly work party, monthly hackathon, or mostly virtual collaboration. Current working groups and bottom-liners as per the wiki: 1. Communication - Elaine and Jenny (requesting new bottom-liner) [1] 2. Challenging Dominant Culture - Kazoo & Margit (new bottom-liner[s] needed) [2] 3. Legal & Governance - Niki [3] 4. Finances - Danny (has this group met?) 'Space Ops' never really got started, and there was a proposal to replace this instead with two new groups in need of bottom-liners: 5. Building Maintenance - biweekly Tuesday work parties [4] 6. Common Space Coordinating What follows are guidelines for working group functionality, also posted on the wiki [5]: _Working Group Protocols_ In order to make progress on many different aspects of this project, please use the following protocols. The intention is to support horizontal, consent-based, transparent, good-faith collaboration. 1. Start a Working Group * Create Working Group wiki page and link to it here: http://wiki.omni-oakland.org/w/Working_Groups * Articulate "mission" or purpose, goals, and any tasks you already know. * Schedule regular meetings and add them to the Calendar: http://wiki.omni-oakland.org/w/Calendar * Announce upcoming meetings on the omni-announce list at least 24 hours prior to meeting: omni-announce(a)lists.riseup.net 2. Hold Working Group Meetings * Before the meeting begins, designate a facilitator and a scribe to take notes * Conclude the meeting with Outcomes or Action Items and schedule next meeting * Post meeting notes to the wiki on the Event page (making it discoverable through the calendar) * Prepare report-back for weekly Omni Collective meeting. 3. Join a Working Group * Check the Calendar [5] and attend the next meeting of the working group. * Directly contact the individual(s) bottom-lining the group. * Show up to a meeting, or use the communication channel specified for that group to stay in touch. 4. Make Progress in a Working Group * Set goals that aspire to deliver on the working group's "mission" or purpose. * If necessary, outline tasks in order to reach each goal. * Make progress on and seek to accomplish any tasks that contribute to the working group's goals. * When a working group's goals require feedback, formal approval, or simply consent from the Omni Collective, create a proposal: ** Present this proposal to the Omni Collective delegates meeting to ensure each member-group can build consent in their respective community as necessary. * When a working group has several divergent options or ideas and cannot come to resolution on them alone, then create proposals that represent these options and present these in some way to the whole collective: ** Present proposals at an Omni Collective meeting for feedback ** Ask for feedback on the omnilogistics(a)lists.riseup.net email list ** Ask for feedback from other working groups, member-groups, or individuals that are not involved with your working group. ** Rinse, repeat until you have garnered improvements to your proposal from the invaluable experiences and contributions of everyone involved with the omni collective, ultimately building consensus among the entire collective. Lead paint... NOT!

Marc and I did some spot checks for lead in the paint on the CCL side of the Bocce ball court, including some of the heavily peeling parts on the North and East wall, and some specks we managed to knock off the ceiling with a tennis ball. *No lead in any of the 6 different samples we checked!* Yay! Highly surprising for a building this age... We used Lead Check swabs <https://www.google.com/search?q=lead+check&tbm=shop> by 3M - you should be able to find them at most paint stores and home improvement stores for around $10 for two swabs. You might want to get some to test other spaces, and we may still want to get an official lead inspection at some point. But so far, this does look very promising... We also poured two plates to test for mold. Again, around $10 per kit <https://www.google.com/search?q=pro-lab+mold+test+kit&tbm=shop>, but you need to pay an extra $40 if you want a lab to identify the specific mold species. There were reports of silverfish in the bocce ball court. I have no idea if anyone tried to address it, but it sounds like they did. [OMNI] Proposals up for consensus:

Hey sudo! At Thursday night's Omni delegates meeting, the following proposals were put forth and are up for discussion over the next week, to be voted on at next Thursday's Omni meeting: 1. Paying Jesse Jesse Palmer is the Omni's lawyer and has done a phenomenal job helping us get to where we are now. His bill totals somewhere in the realm of $8500, which divided among 10 collectives means Sudo would contribute ~$850. 2. Paying an additional month of rent into a reserve Our rent for July is free, but all collectives could pay rent for the month of July anyway to be put into a reserve fund. I think this is a great idea, and we have the funds for it (I believe we have ~$12,000 in the bank). 3. Revision to Consensus Process: Thus far, the Omni Collective has made decisions using a full consensus model. The proposal on the table is for votes to strive for full consensus, but resort to a 2/3 majority vote if consensus cannot be achieved. This model was recommended by Jesse, who has extensive experience representing coops and collectives who've run into problems with full-consensus models for hairy decisions like banning an abusive individual or - as may be the case with us - removing particular groups/collectives from the larger collective. Proposal : New Voting Model All votes called by the Delegate Council are subject to two rounds of voting. The first round passes by full consensus. If after friendly amendments and conversation full consensus cannot be achieved, the vote moves to a second round which passes by 2/3 majority. If this second vote fails to pass, the vote does not carry. This amendment to our full consensus voting procedures is proposed in light of advice from radical comrades and colleagues who have seen groups and projects torn apart by bad-faith exploitation of full consensus voting. Our group's aim and aspiration will always be full consensus, and we will always work to make sure all voices are heard. Awesomeness: Thanks David K, David ?, Jeremy, and Sally for your help. That was a lot of stuff!! The area got 96% cleared up. We moved the 2 Two Posts Racks, and the improvised server cart holding three two Servers and a Dell Desktop. If someone could clear up the rest of the stuff would super! What is left?
