hi everyone,
I'm starting to work at sudo again (after a very long hiatus) (mostly
evenings, 6-12, m-f). I'm currently working on some game, ai and
architecture stuff, you can see it here:

space and see what people are working on and doing.
Nonetheless, I have some concerns about the laser cutter. Today, the laser
cutter was being used, and, well, it, to my mind, smelled up sudo pretty
significantly. I think you could also even smell out in the hall. I guess
what I'd like to know is (a.) can we prevent this somehow? and/or (b.) can
we have a laser cutter moratorium until we know why this is happening?
I could be wrong, but I believe that improper ventilation of a laser cutter
can be both long-term toxic and even short term life-threatening (if
someone is cutting something really wacky, which I don't think is what was
happening today; I think someone was just cutting wood, hopefully not
laminated in any weird way).
Anyway, yeah, I have to defer to people smarter than me on the above, but
something was off today in the way the machine was working (this was about
6pm); and, personally, I found it kind of spooky. Thanks for your
thoughts/help/ideas/etc.

I arrived at 8:30 and used the laser cutter. (i made a box yay!). i think i
was the second one to use it this evening. before i started i fixed a big
tear in the vent duct with what duct tape i could find. though i didn't
find a roll of it (I'm new here).
it wasn't too smoky as i was using it, though i could still smell it. if
there's more duct tape applied i think it will do wonders for the air
quality. when i arrived, i suspect nearly all the smoke would have been
going into the room.

next time I'm there I'll try to give the vent a proper fixing if nobody
gets to it first.

I'd love to know what you find/what you make of the venting system once you
take a look at it, could you update us/me when that happens?
Would it also be possible to have a moratorium on using it until the
venting is checked out/checked off on?
Again, tried to just accomplish some software work there yesterday, but it
wasn't really possible...

sorry for forking the email thread (some of you are getting this twice):
safety training for the laser, any material not specifically made for laser
cutters (the stuff in the pile next to it) needs a flame test first.
never cut pvc, never cut fluffy flammable things etc. make a small cut
first.
Beyond the safety critical things here's some personal thoughts on laser
etiquette:
-4: if you see someone looking lost and poking at the laser, come help them
to understand community expectations and how to use it safely.
-3: Care about those around you, both their comfort needs and their
futur'ish'build'cool'stuff needs.
-2: if you are uncomfortable say "hey, can you use do that after <time / i
finish-x>,
-1: if someone in the room is uncomfortable, cut later. Almost no projects
need to be cut now!
0: leave the lid closed for 30 seconds after the cut finishes to give the
smoke time to clear.
1: don't use the machine if there's an event happening, the blower is loud.
2. check the chiller temp each time you hit start
3. turn the laser enable switch to the off position when you are not
cutting.
4: if you mangle a part because some settings don't work, label your part
with the settings and display it for others to learn from. eg: 1mm/sec is
too slow and makes really ugly looking edges at 80% power.

I found some articles online about laser cutter exhaust and it says check
the manufacturer's specs to make sure airflow and pressure is maintained
(e.g. use 6" duct if it's too long for 4" to do the job). Use aluminum tape
not duct tape for sealing the metal duct (i.e. the stuff you see on HVAC
systems which is not duct tape, confusingly) - the duct by the way should
be grounded.

big hole in the side not notwithstanding ;)
non conductive ducts don't need grounding.

ok, I guess their concern with plastic duct was that particles could
(possibly) cause a build up of static electricity vs a grounded duct.
It'd be nice to have VOC and particle sensors in the space.

So, based on Jake's last email (not sure why it's not on this thread), have
we arrived at a temporary moratorium until the laser cutter ventilation
system is reinstalled/fixed/revamped?
Personally in favor of this, due to the long term health issues improper
ventilation can cause. Based on that email, it's sort of sounding like
smaller temporary fixes are not working.

I'm fairly uncomfortable with this as the consensus, because it sounds like
"nobody use this till some unspecified person does unspecified things, and
does them well enough to satisfy some unspecified person"
I don't feel excited at the idea of trying to do that, so the natural

Everyone is empowered to fix things at sudoroom! that's the idea - you get
sudo permissions and you can use them to make things better! But with great
power comes great responsibility.
Last night Kent and I took apart the duct-taped mess that was the laser cutter
ventilation fan (on the ground level) and spent hours constructing a
replacement furniture for the fan (instead of the random metal cart)
but more importantly, we went on the roof and discovered that the wooden plate
that was supposed to seal the duct against the hole in the skylight had fallen,
and was leaving a huge gap inside the building. So all the fumes being
extracted were free to fall back into the room. That has been corrected. Kent
had to dremel through screws on the roof to remove the duct lid (we put them
back) and we removed a baffle plate that was obstructing airflow.
to replace the duct tape that had been connecting the 8" duct to the 6" exhaust
fan outlet, the following shape was 3D printed in PLA:

the next step is for SOMEONE (not me) to peel the 3D printed adaptor off of the
printer (I did not stay to watch it finish) and install it onto the outlet of
the exhaust fan, and then attach the exhaust duct to the adaptor using
appropriate means (depending on how well it fits)
i guess it ran out of filament before it finished but there should be enough
there to make it work:

also, there are many gaps in the laser cutter (you can see through to the
floor from inside the compartment) and the aluminum foil tape in the bin on top
of the cutter would be ideal for sealing as many gaps and openings as possible
to minimize smoke getting into the room. SOMEONE should do this! (not me)
And if i haven't said this enough times yet: if you want to laser cut
something, send an email ahead of time letting people know when you would like
to do it to make sure nobody is taken by surprise, until we know that the
ventilation is sufficient not to disrupt other activities - even the sound of
the laser exhaust can be disruptive, so ideally we do laser cutting at a time
when everyone present has at least been warned of what to expect.

With some milk crates, zip ties, garden cutters and a router, we came up
with a new stand for the exhaust fan. Trimmed the torn-up end of the duct
tube. I suggest coating the new end with some flexible sealant, as there
are still a few pinholes.
When the adapter is installed, combined with the new duct/roof interface,
I think fume extraction will be greatly improved!
Ping Jake or myself if you are going to mount the adapter. It needs to be
screwed & glued.
There is an air gap along the bottom front at the cutter’s air intake. I
suggest we do some test cuts first to see if it needs sealing off. I still
think it’s a good idea to run some plastic weather-stripping around the
door frame, though.

tube. I suggest coating the new end with some flexible sealant, as there
are still a few pinholes.
When the adapter is installed, combined with the new duct/roof interface,
I think fume extraction will be greatly improved!
Ping Jake or myself if you are going to mount the adapter. It needs to be
screwed & glued.
There is an air gap along the bottom front at the cutter’s air intake. I
suggest we do some test cuts first to see if it needs sealing off. I still
think it’s a good idea to run some plastic weather-stripping around the
door frame, though.

that's the idea - you
get
sudo permissions and you can use them to make things better! But with
great
power comes great responsibility.
Last night Kent and I took apart the duct-taped mess that was the laser
cutter
ventilation fan (on the ground level) and spent hours constructing a
replacement furniture for the fan (instead of the random metal cart)
but more importantly, we went on the roof and discovered that the wooden
plate
that was supposed to seal the duct against the hole in the skylight had
fallen,
and was leaving a huge gap inside the building. So all the fumes being
extracted were free to fall back into the room. That has been corrected.
Kent
had to dremel through screws on the roof to remove the duct lid (we put
them
back) and we removed a baffle plate that was obstructing airflow.
to replace the duct tape that had been connecting the 8" duct to the 6"
exhaust
fan outlet, the following shape was 3D printed in PLA:

the next step is for SOMEONE (not me) to peel the 3D printed adaptor off
of the
printer (I did not stay to watch it finish) and install it onto the
outlet of
the exhaust fan, and then attach the exhaust duct to the adaptor using
appropriate means (depending on how well it fits)
i guess it ran out of filament before it finished but there should be
enough

also, there are many gaps in the laser cutter (you can see through to the
floor from inside the compartment) and the aluminum foil tape in the bin
on top
of the cutter would be ideal for sealing as many gaps and openings as
possible
to minimize smoke getting into the room. SOMEONE should do this! (not me)
And if i haven't said this enough times yet: if you want to laser cut
something, send an email ahead of time letting people know when you would
like
to do it to make sure nobody is taken by surprise, until we know that the
ventilation is sufficient not to disrupt other activities - even the
sound of
the laser exhaust can be disruptive, so ideally we do laser cutting at a
time
when everyone present has at least been warned of what to expect.
