I have been having a hard time getting creative work done in hackerspaces lately, as
I've mentioned. There always seems to be an agenda completely unrelated to doing cool
stuff when I am there, so it's a relief to do cool stuff!
Maybe the creative spaces can exist outside of the hackrrspace, in bars?

I'm happy as long as you're finding a good environment to work, but I'd
also like to try to improve sudoroom to make it as fertile for creative
productivity as possible. Can you elaborate on what qualities you find make
working at a bar productive? Are any of these things that can be ported
into somewhere like Sudoroom?
I also want to confess that I actually can't work in Sudoroom because of
the mess. I've felt self conscious about admitting this since I joined, but
I've gotta come clean: I can't actually work in sudoroom. I would describe
it as hoarded, and I don't think I'll be able to ever work there unless we
aggressively declutter.

For computer+keyboard work I find the upstairs is sparse enough to get in the right frame
of mind.

If I'm being honest, I think part of the problem is that we put too much
responsibility on individuals. I've tried to clean up based on the
encouragement to act proactively, but one simple issue is that I didn't
know where to find supplies. I couldn't find a trash bag or a broom. And
then the next issue is the work of trying to make a good decision about
what to discard. It's hard to know what someone will miss, so cleaning up
means looking at a small item and imagining all the possible uses it could
have, judging its worth, and then imagining how strangers might judge its
worth, and then doing that dozens of times. That mental workload is huge.
Instead of leaving this up to lots of separate individuals, I think this is
a situation that is better resolved by a team or organized volunteers
working collaboratively and establishing routine practices that are easy to
bring new people into.
I'd like to suggest we organize a facilities group that can talk and meet
and work together to find and obtain the supplies we need and make good
decisions as a group instead.

Whoa that seems really basic, like Step 0 for organizing the space and
routine maintenance. If the sudo wiki doesn't have some kind of instruction
manual for the space w/ basic info on routine cleaning etc., then maybe we
should make one. I'm moving back to Oakland and hopefully can pitch in
soon. Steps 1 thru 9000 are a bit involved (storing and organizing
everything sanely so things can be found, maybe better separating work and
storage spaces, etc.) but I have seen other hackerspaces get things
organized!

Yeah SudoRoom has always had a
(a) omni problem (committees to form committees to form committees to talk a lot) these
committees are particularly hostile to women who are creative and want to do things other
than care for children
(b) a cleaning problem
the cleaning problem is pretty controversial.
Nobody wants to pay a professional to do the cleaning or do a haul. I've
participated in cleaning parties. People have talked to me more about cleaning parties
almost as much as they have about getting me to do volunteer work for a children's
education group, which is quite a lot!
I do not see any sudoroom members volunteering for cleaning parties getting anything done
tbh. I'm pretty sure Noisebridge pulled it off because they probably hired people.
I personally would rather have more discussions about creative work than about being in
omni committees or cleaning. I don't have enough time to volunteer for cleaning
parties.

Romy, I'd really like to know when this happened to you. When did an
omni committee pressure you to do childcare??? I'm not aware of this
happening ever. That is very far removed from anything that we are
trying to do.

Yeah, what is it about a bar that could be ported to sudoroom?
There's a lot of natural light. I think when I go to a bar people who work there are
cool with me just doing creative work.
There's not an agenda to distract me from doing creative work at a bar in order to get
me to be involved in children's education or an omni committee
