we are all starving for a warm place to hack, and sudoroom attendance is
reduced for obvious reasons.
what we need is a warm room to hack, and i propose the following:
we tarp above the server balcony of sudoroom, and seal the whole thing
like a room. To enter from the steps you have to pull back a magnetically
sealed thing or maybe we can make a hinged door thing, i don't know.
all the heat from the servers (and people hacking in there) will be
conserved and it will be social in addition to being warm.
I have some lighting that might be appropriate, to help people feel like
they're in the sun, as well as providing warmth.
also it will be a nice chance to clean up that area and move things around
and make it a hacking zone again.
HOW CAN I HELP?
if you have tarps or sail material or blankets or rope or anything you
think could be used to close off the area, let's talk about it to see if
it will work. If you bring it in on your own I hope you install it too -
it might take some carpentry or something to have places to attach it.
I think the ceiling should be about 10' high, or whatever it takes to
enclose the eastern shelves up there and securely seal to the wall.

There is a lot of mesh stuff up there as well as the server/network infrastructure.

-about making a box there: keep in mind that the servers-appliances noise
may be annoying after awhile.
-however, i have two wood 4'x8' lattices for donation if wanted. sample

Korsi, Mesa Camilla, or Sandali
I have used something similar to stay warm in sub-freezing temperatures
without having to rely on space heating.

The heated room balcony is a great idea. It may be easier to make it
structurally sound if you use insulation panels. At Home Depot, polystyrene
panels 4x8' are around $8 and Polyiso high-insulation panels are $20 1" or
$30 2". Those are going to allow you to cut an exact room out that will
last and are similar to what is used to construct Hexayurts if you have
heard of those being used in the desert for example. I would be glad to
help with the build.

i forget, is polyisocyanurate super fire retardant or super flammable?
would be good to span the 8' without any other support. otherwise the
1.5" styrofoam with 2x2 "studs" should work well.

It appears that it is fire retardant for our purposes, however, if the
balcony under it were to catch fire, and the polyisocyanurate were caught
up in the conflagration, you would want to leave to avoid breathing the
fumes from the superheated polyisocyanurate as they would be toxic.
But I think we should use transparent material for the north and west
sides, so that the space is visually inclusive. I can bring in
large single-pane windows and we can stick it all together.

absorbing moisture from the air. In the long run we should build a storage

filament is typically shipped in sealed plastic.

Didn't we have an entire cardboard box full of expired silica gel inserts
at one time? Those can be easily regenerated by heating them in an oven or

I was over there for the first time in a while
yesterday and noticed
the taz sitting lonely on the ground. Is it working or does it need some
TLC?
Last I heard someone was complaining that the extruder was having

It appears that it is fire retardant for our purposes, however, if the
balcony under it were to catch fire, and the polyisocyanurate were caught up
in the conflagration, you would want to leave to avoid breathing the fumes
from the superheated polyisocyanurate as they would be toxic.
But I think we should use transparent material for the north and west sides,
so that the space is visually inclusive. I can bring in large single-pane
windows and we can stick it all together.

I have the following to contribute if desired:
-an old 1500W bionaire bh3950 space heater that I was going to use to
make a shitty kotatsu, would draw ~15 amps so would need to have its own
cord to a lightly loaded circuit.
-some clear 6 mil poly sheeting, not sure how much left but is 10' wide
and would make a good translucent wall for the hack mezzanine

we tarp above the server balcony of sudoroom, and seal the whole thing

conserved and it will be social in addition to being warm.

HOW CAN I HELP?
if you have tarps or sail material or blankets or rope or anything you
think could be used to close off the area, let's talk about it to see if it
will work. If you bring it in on your own I hope you install it too - it
might take some carpentry or something to have places to attach it.
I think the ceiling should be about 10' high, or whatever it takes to
enclose the eastern shelves up there and securely seal to the wall.
if you know what any of the stuff is upstairs, and think you can clean up
or move things elsewhere, please do that. We have a lot of printers and I
don't know which ones are good or bad, and there are a lot of stereo
systems and computers up there that maybe need to be put back into
inventory, or put in the e-waste pile.
also it's really dirty and dusty up there, so if you know where is a
vacuum and/or brooms/dustpans please help get it clean up there.

That area is not very large, especially with the servers. Only 4-5 people
would fit up there, and we do need a place for servers, printers,
laminators and that kinda stuff. If you want to clean stuff out maybe start
by removing the radio gear you dumped in the big wire rack. The mesh and
server area stuff is actually reasonably organized and being used, so I'd
like to not move that somewhere else and the servers should have _more_
room around them so people can actually get to them.
