No, I think a giant sheep that you enter through the ass is way less
admirable than making a crowd funded movie. I think crowd funded movies are
extremely important, given what traditional funding has done to the
creativity of film.
Also Burning Man does not need queering.

I've seen some pretty obnoxo bits come across these tubes, including
nasty ad-hominems, assertions of superiority, category put-downs, and "I
refuse to hear you" stuff. Most of that seems to me to be psychological
defensiveness, heated-up by dynamics such as you pointed out in your
article excerpt yesterday, plus the usual outcomes of a hybridized
communications medium that's part conversation, part broadcast, delayed
rather than realtime, and minus all nonverbal cues.
Generally the sting wears off after a few days and then it's over & done
with. Contrast to: imagine if every conversation you ever had at a pub,
was preserved for posterity and searchable under your name. (The idea
that this stuff needs to be indexed & searchable is more than a little
narcissistic: to quote someone I was hanging out with last night, are we
really so important?)
Knowing the person at the other end of the wire, and being able to
translate their writing into their spoken voice, makes many of those
issues disappear. In my mind's ear I hear you telling sheep jokes.
They're not bad, for sheep jokes;-)
OK, so who's going to launch a Kickstarter to build another giant gay sheep?
Or how'bout a couple of giant lesbian sheep? With audio chips &
speakers, so they can say to each other, "Baaa-aaa-aaa, I love ewe!" and
"Baa-aa-aaa, I love ewe too!"

I disagree with Gtwog's 'no apologies needed' stance, and thank Andrew
profusely for his public apology. You don't need to sound homophobic to
sound ignorant as hell, and you don't need to eat crow to admit you were
wrong.
I think it's crazy to expect not to be ignorant about each other sometimes.
It's brave to admit it, and scary to me when misunderstanding or
disagreement are swept under the rug. But hey, 'hacker' culture seems to
include dismissing (other people's) personal discomfort as 'drama' while
assuming somehow that in an open community there will be no
misunderstanding.

Just to bring this back full circle. My point in posting this was to point
out that there are people with money willing to give that money to you with
no strings attached if you have a project and a funny video.
Imagine what the mesh project or sudo radio could do with $10,000. I know
that lots of money does not = great project, but i would encourage some of
the projects out there to think in terms of what they want to do (dream
big), instead of what they can do now by scraping together parts on with a
non existent budget.

One important point is that kickstarter.com is not a very good way to get
your project known. There are very few people out there just waiting for
your project to appear so they can contribute. You MUST aggressively market
your kickstarter campaign using every available channel. It is up to you to
get it known via all sorts of social networks (both online and real world),
personal contacts, business associates, billboards, whatever you've got.
I've seen several campaigns fail miserably because the folks weren't able
to get the word out well enough.

Since Kickstarter has time limits, seems to me the way to do this is to
put up a website with project details, and then stir up publicity
directed toward the website, before going on Kickstarter.
The skill-sets and cultural variables don't often overlap between
geekdom and promotional activity. So there's probably room for
something like a promotional agency that can take on the task of getting
the word out about projects.
Major PR agencies have extensive direct personal contact with
journalists. Journalists in certain areas (business, sci & tech,
medicine, entertainment, etc.) rely heavily on press releases from PR
agencies, for leads and stories. (For example all the news you might
have seen today about the large asteroid fly-by this afternoon, was
probably the result of NASA sending out press releases.)
