I am presently trying to figure out why it leaks air from a valve whose
purpose I don't understand. In the meantime it is working now.
My friend is offering to lend us a plasma cutter, which is like a welder
but cuts metal instead of welding it together. It uses electricity and
compressed air, and when we attach the business end to the robot, we will
be able to cut precise shapes out of steel of significant thickness,
making the laser cutter very jealous.
can someone print out the air compressor manual (PDF link above) and
perhaps put it in a binder so it doesn't get grimy? We can attach it to
the compressor somehow.

I did a lot of research and the answer is, none of the things pictured are
the problem, they are leaking as a symptom of the check valve
malfunctioning.
If someone orders a new check valve i'll install it and we'll have a
perfectly properly functioning air compressor again.

yes thats not a problem. it can share the 240v 30a circuit with the
robot.

BUMP
we got the plasma cutter working! But the air compressor is still messed
up. We took it apart three times trying to fix the check valve, but it
simply didn't work.
if someone orders this check valve, i'll put it into our air compressor
and we'll be ready to use the plasma cutter with or without the robot!
if you order this, email me. otherwise I might just go get one myself
from home depot if they have it.

this is a very valid concern, but my plan is to setup, in the words of
that blog post, "a powerful fume extractor" connected to the shiny 8" duct
that runs to the vent in the ceiling.
Last night someone was using the laser cutter with that duct and the
performance was insufficient. I intend to reconfigure the exhaust duct in
a couple of ways:
1. I will move the wood plate at the top of the duct so that it mates
correctly with the round vent hole in the roof window
2. I will setup an electric exhaust blower on the roof so that air gets
sucked out through the hose.
these changes will improve performance both when the duct is used with the
laser cutter, and when it's moved over to the plasma cutter for use when
we're cutting metal.
any help is appreciated!

We should definitely disallow cutting of any stainless steel, which causes
dangerous hexavalent chromium dust. For those of you with the blank stares,
hex chromium is the pollutant linked to dozens of cancer cases in the Erin
Brokovich movie, a dramatized account of an infamous case where PG&E wound
up paying out a third of a billion dollars in damages.
We should probably ban any galvanized metals as well. Zinc fumes are nasty.
Nickel in stainless steel is a concern as well. So is the cadmium and
manganese in some grades of steel.
The upshot is that we probably shouldn't be doing any plasma cutting
without some serious ventilation. And eye protection of course - a welding
curtain or screen might be good to have.

Seems like for the CNC plasma cutters, a lot of people are really
recommending a water table as being far more effective at eliminating the

Anecdotally, I have a friend who has done a lot of welding over the years
and he says he is able to detox (at least partially) by eating lots of
mushrooms and drinking lots of milk after a heavy welding job. So that's

OK, I ordered the check valve for the air compressor. If you are sad that
you missed an opportunity to donate something awesome to sudoroom, you can

also, the plasma cutter will need "consumables" meaning the little copper
things that go in the handle. It is a Hypertherm Powermax 900 and we can
get 35A pieces instead of 55A pieces, primarily the inner and outer
electrodes:

we will have to look at the one we have to determine which bits to buy
(i'm not at sudoroom right now) but in the meantime it's working well
enough to cut a few things once the air compressor is working and we make
a temporary watertable on the floor...

cuts metal instead of welding it together. It uses electricity and
compressed air, and when we attach the business end to the robot, we will be
able to cut precise shapes out of steel of significant thickness, making the
laser cutter very jealous.
can someone print out the air compressor manual (PDF link above) and perhaps
put it in a binder so it doesn't get grimy? We can attach it to the
compressor somehow.
