Last Tuesday, Peter and/or Tom said they would order all the flashing tools we need for the laptops, so whenever those come in, anyone should be able to flash the bios chips. Could incorporate that process into this event idea... we only have a handful of unlocked computers still I think. We just took off the security stickers with isopropyl and fingernail scraping. I love the idea of more events like this, but i want to say two things: The anti-theft stickers on the laptops are difficult to remove and leave a "STOLEN PROPERTY 1-800-488-STOP" mark behind, which is obviously really crappy. This is absolutely the last thing poor kids need to deal with, both for their own personal self-worth and also practical matters that they might be harassed and even arrested even though they've done nothing wrong, let alone have their computer taken away. So this needs to be the first focus: developing a process for removing these tags and cleaning the "tattoo" off before doing anything else. I recommend first confirming the computer boots properly from USB but doing nothing else, let the new owners experience the joy of installing linux themselves! But this removal process should be done by us, before inviting people to receive computers, and it's going to be boring unfortunately.
