Hey Guys,
I feel like we have a problem and I want to put out there, along with what
I think is a really reasonable and well thought out solution.

In my opinion there is way too much stuff at SudoRoom, and it's just
unfocused and messy.
I think it's a roadblock to membership. We aren't equipped to deal with
this much stuff, and we don't have room for people to be in the space.

One solution is to have a party where we donate, recycle, and throw out
things we don't need, in order to make room for a new design of the space
that accomodates more members and makes the space more usable.
As part of that we could hand out green stickers to put on things we want
to keep, and if people put stickers on things, then we can keep them. We
could also hand out a limited amount of red stickers of things that people
want to see leave the space, and we could bring up those items at a
meeting.
We could pool resources to pay for a dumpster, and uhaul truck. Obviously,
throwing things away would be a last resort, and donating would be
preferred.
I'm open to other solutions, but this is where I have gotten with other
members so far.

You could simply get some red stickers and put them on the things that are
offending which prompted this email, and then bring them up at a meeting..?

Hey Eddie,
Actually what promoted this email was the idea that sudo doesn't have
spacious seating/standing-desks/wheel-chair space, and I realized that it's
like the little rascals in there, and the clubhouse is about to burn
down(metaphorically). God help us if it did.
Honestly, I don't care what goes in the space, which is why the stickers
idea came about from JC(not my idea), and it was a really good one. The
idea isn't to just move stuff out, the idea is to have a discussion, and
when we feel like everyone has had a chance to speak up on this, then we
can start to move out, because it's more inline with consensus.
I submit that we discuss it to death this week, and then have a general
vibe about the issue, and then give 2 weeks notice and stickers.

tried to solve at the beginning of August with the deep
clean/reorganization weekend that we had.
If the general consensus is that the
organization/crowding/cleanliness/etc. problem still exists, I think
that a good starting point of discussion would be to address the
successes and rooms-for-improvement of our recent attempt to solve it.
In my opinion we should just have big clean days more often

Hack trash:
Everything is free alchemy: Ecologically, the concept of trash is part of
the problem. My view from about 6 weeks at Rainbow cleanup acknowledges +
decolonizes, or hacks, the idea of trash into materials primarily. Trash
manifests these materials freely, with actually a negative value for the
source person or firm generally, This includes wood, metal, paper, plastic
tarps and stuff e-waste such as speakers (MAGNETS!), Any construction site
has these materials regularly, people who are still consumers make them,
firms, and households.
This alchemical transformation functions well for it's purpose (eg, hack
everything is free) to fit our lives and solve environmental problems.
These inventions not only allow someone to live no house, no money, but
also reduce waste and can be replicated without buying them. Try it out--
if you can find and design from the SudoRoom wiki, great. Otherwise, I will
be uploading clearer how-to's which will be going into my twitter feed (

The concept of trash is part of the problem. We need to be more than just
consumers. If these are larger things, can stuff be hacked? Can it be
up-cycled? Is there someone who would use metal to melt it down and
repurpose it, or recycle it? If there are large things, is there a place
that gives these materials freely (I honestly really miss the materials
dumpster from across the street, which was even policed)? Could we go there
and get things from them to hack, so that we are neutral net effect? If we
are "talking these things to death" this week anyone who's read this email
might discuss trash in terms of where we can get (and, maybe deposit)
groundscores, perhaps like nodes in the East Bay.
And, for cleanliness and organization(cause John's email just came in)--

Hey Eddie,
Thanks for the good feedback on cleaning, and I definitely think we should
consider those issues with regards of how we treat the materials we don't
use, and have a set of best-practices.
Right now, I think if we de-couple the issue of what happens to things when
were done, from what the space can be, then I think we can at least figure
out what we need in terms of space, and what stuff people actually want to
keep there, and then have a more realistic idea of what we can repurpose,
donate, recycle, and even sell.
Then, I'm sure we can have that discussion... Although, i don't think we
should take too much time in terms of these discussions.

Jonathan... I agree we should focus on the execution, and I think once we
have a consensus, and we advertise the events more... more people will show
up.
I can't lift a lot(part of my general frustration with the world right
now), but I'm down to help design the new space, and help cook and provide

i have a few thoughts on this, quite. am brainstorming. am very
interested in helping to bring about the best of all possible outcomes.
that being said, let me say that i do not think that it is the stuff that
is keeping people away. perhaps the size of the radio room, but not the
stuff. i myself find myself being protective more than inviting, because i
love SR so much, and have seen a bit of the world and the depths to which
the social can fall.

but back to the topic. my thoughts:
i know that the space that there is can be wayyyy better utilized, because
my honey folded space for me at our house, and he is a genius at it. i
could get into getting that ball in motion -- getting a consultation and a
battle plan together by having him do a walkthrough and then taking notes
--- and submit that to the general Eye.
As far as tickets and recycling, could there also be a way to sticker the
things we would want if they were not others' keepers? somehow i think
thatt would help if the idea was to liquidate....
also it should be considered having a biweekly or monthly 'yard' sale.
another think i would be willing to help with, even if it was off site,
like at the coliseum.
but mostly i wanted to say that i do not think there is too much stuff
there. heh heh not by a long shot.....
because a little bird told me that a whole bunch of choice electrical
equipment was going to be coming the SR way.... old school stuff, from the
middle of the last century -- and i didn't realize that, with as little as
you had, you already thought you had too much.... i guess i thought that
being a repository-slash-library was part of the community service of a
hackerspace...
and so i hope i have not gotten any of this too wrong. certainly i mean no
offense, and welcome the conversation.....

Hi Johanna,
I don't think anyone's feelings will get hurt :D.
On conversion, I think there are a variety of user-personas we have to work
with, and I've done a lot of asking around before I started this
discussions, and people have negative opinions about the physical space.
Most of them are minor greivances, but a majority of them focus on
clutter, and overall usefulness. I think we could solve that problem in a
number of ways, as you pointed out, but the best way would be the way that
was easiest for all members to approach, and so less stuff makes it easier
to clean, in my opinion.
Secondarily, I look at the stuff like I look at bloatware. Yea, it's not
filling up the whole hard-drive, but It's still an obtrusive thing. You
may be right that we could organize the stuff we have, but it would still
be stuff we don't want.
I think it makes much more sense to have a wishlist. Is this item on the
wishlist? No. Why is it being donated? At least at that point, someone
has to know it's on them, if that junk sticks around the space.
I know at other hackerspaces this has worked, but our organizational system
isn't the same, but I think the personal pressure would be good, and people
would take more ownership over things, and we could at least see who is
using the stuff, etc., etc.
That combined with a sticker system is good... if people had a fixed number
of stickers every few months, we could identify the tough spots visibly.
Also, we could identify the stuff that has been liked the most over the
months and even years... Like our fridge would have a rainbow of stickers
that said "good" on them. Which is pretty cool on it's own(RIGHT JC :D ?)
Anyway, I would love to have your husband help us with redesigning the
space, and I am very greatful that we're having this discussion, because I
think if we can come to an agreement around the community, more people will
get involved.
