Needless to say - if one of the non-experts could pop over and take some
pictures, that would help as well! At least that way someone better
informed could at least verify it's a type that would be useful (if not
whether it's *working*...)

There are lots of kinds of industrial sewing machines; each machine is
built specific for one function, and does it extremely well.
Ideal for thicker leather would be a 'walking foot' machine; i'd love one
of those! A single-needle or straight-stitch (most basic or 'normal' sewing
machine) would be super useful too, and can be used for some leather
projects. Even industrial zigzag would be fun.
Sewing machine transport tip: if it is full of oil, drain and reserve the
oil.
