Omni Building Work Party this Sat, 10am-5pm!

Greetings omninoms, The newly-regrouped Building Working Group will be hosting an all-day, building-wide work party this Saturday, Sep 2nd. Planned projects include: * Painting the Entrance Hall * Reorganizing and rodent-proofing the storage closets * Sealing off the basement vent above water heater (rodent-proofing) * Replacing the sudo/ccl bathroom faucet, other various plumbing repairs around the building (folx with plumbing skillz needed) * Mounting the front door motor for automated door opener * Patching the basement south wall ...but feel free to take on any task or repair that you've been wanting to tackle, or assist with general cleaning :) Come by any time throughout the day and lend a hand! sudoroom needs bandsaw blade plate

i am ordering repair parts for the sudoroom bandsaw, including "bandsaw tires" (rubber rings that ride on the rollers inside the saw so the blade doesn't fall off anymore) but it's still missing the "throat plate" or "table insert" which is a square plate with a slot cut into it, and it's what holds up the material being cut. it needs to be 1/8" thick and 1.5" square, and then we can use the bandsaw to cut the slot into it (that's the easy part) it looks a lot like this, except it should be made of metal ideally: https://cdn.instructables.com/FJG/0GY9/H82U8CS5/FJG0GY9H82U8CS5.LARGE.jpg however if it's made of plastic or acrylic or something not as strong as metal, it will have to be thicker than 1/8" (except at the edges where it has to sit on the shelf) here's a video of someone making one from scratch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsWLQDdWlG0 can someone make this plate? ideally out of aluminum, i think. -jake

I have already managed to find the most common archetypes and create five main characters based on them: Inventor, Activist, Troll, Anarchist and Maker. I'd like to focus on the community aspect and how we can create things together, as opposed to the Silicon Valley lone genius concept. Even though I originally wanted to set the story in Poland, I might be changing that to some more or less defined European city. Seeing hackers from all over the world, especially Kenya or Philippines I really don't want to enforce the stereotype that all of them needs to be white. I'm still working on a script which would be enjoyable both for actual hackers and people who haven't heard about them before. founder of the hacker/maker movement Tool Sale

Nick Bertoni created a community workspace where people could come and build and learn with all types of tools and technology, mostly in the 1980's and 1990's. He also collected a lot of tools and materials, including an electronics lab, from which I already acquired stuff for sudoroom. This weekend you should go to the tool sale, even if you don't need anything, just to see all the awesome stuff. And certainly if you need something, no matter how weird or rare it is (or you never knew it existed) it will be there. I can tell you that the Sorensen DCR 20-25B works perfectly since I repaired it years ago. It's a 20V 25A regulated power supply. Attached is the Craigslist post for the sale, which will take place 10am-4pm saturday and sunday. DIY Safe Solar Eclipse viewing glasses

Anyone here know how someone could make their own solar eclipse glasses in order to safely view the August 21st solar eclipse?? Was thinking of using multiply-folded metallized film laminate that's found in common antistatic bags for a filter. AFAICT, 5X foldings of the 2-ply antistatic bags -- 10 layers in total -- similar to those described at http://www.all-spec.com/Catalog/Static-Control/ESD-Safe-Bags/Static-Shieldi… and at http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?mwsId=SSSSSuUn_zu8l00xM82xlx_eN… seem to _completely_ block out all sunlight. getting rid of sewing machine and embroidery machine tables

we've talked about this before but.. does anyone object to selling/giving away the giant JUKI sewing machine table AND embroidery machine table? i wish we could keep the latter (it's really cool when it works!) but since I haven't been able to get it to work (and i tried) i'm ready to give up on it. if nobody objects or offers a plan, i'll post them on craigslist and get them out of the space, for free if necessary. -jake
